Old St. Pat's Podcast

Old St. Patrick's Church, Father Bryan Massingale, Fr. Bryan Massingaleold-st-pats-podcast.simplecast.com
Old St. Patrick's is a Roman Catholic community in Chicago's bustling West Loop neighborhood, founded by Irish Immigrants on Easter morning in 1846. Since then we have grown into a home to a membership of about 4,000 households and innumerable friends. As we grow, we continually redefine what it means to be an urban church. We are committed to remaining open to new visions and possibilities, seeking broader horizons as we journey into our future. We encourage you to encounter the God who loves you, engage in a community that welcomes you, and serve the world that needs you. This podcast aims to welcome all into a Catholic experience like no other. Welcome to the Old St. Pat's Podcast.

Hope Is Gritty: Living Resurrection Now - Fr. Ed Foley 4.20.25

We begin today’s episode with a moment of reverence and gratitude for Pope Francis. As the world mourns his death, we remember his unwavering dedication to the Church, the poor, migrants, and the environment, his witness of humility, and his call for mercy and justice. Today, we carry his legacy in prayer and purpose. Now more than ever, we are called to be people of hope. Hope is not a vague wish or sunny optimism. It’s not about looking away from pain or pretending everything’s fine. No, hope ...

The Passion as Practice - Fr. Joe Simmons, SJ 4.13.25

A lot can happen in a week. And if you’ve been paying attention to the news or reflecting on your own life, you probably know that all too well. In one moment, things are smooth and joyful; in the next, we’re hit with grief, surprise, or uncertainty. It can feel like we’re on a rollercoaster of emotions. That emotional ride is what we step into during Holy Week. The Passion of our Lord isn’t just a story we tell—it’s a practice. A spiritual rehearsal. Because just like the Passion, life is fille...

Angels, Devils, and the Daily Choice - Fr. Paul Shelton 4.6.25

It’s a powerful realization, isn’t it? To know that we are complex human beings—beautifully flawed, constantly evolving. We’re all a bit like those cartoon characters with the angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other. Every day, we’re faced with a choice. And in that choice lies the tension between good and evil, between judgment and mercy, between who we think we are—and who God is calling us to become. God invites us to let go of the old way of condemnation and step into something radi...

Love That Defies Logic - Fr. Ed Foley 3.30.25

On a day dedicated to pranks, tricks, and making each other look a little foolish, have you ever thought of God as a fool? A fool in love? The world celebrates IQ, emotional intelligence, business acumen, and creativity—but are those the things that truly define a successful life? Society tells us intelligence is about strategy, success, and getting ahead. But wisdom tells a different story. And God’s wisdom looks nothing like the world’s. It’s a love so relentless, so reckless by human standard...

Planted with Purpose - Fr. Tom Hurley 3.23.25

Farmers must carefully tend to their crops in order to do a good job. A good seed needs the right environment—sunlight, water, nutrients, and space—to truly thrive. Without the right conditions, even the best seed won’t produce fruit. We are the same way. Our environment matters. The people around us, the care we receive, the love and patience we’re shown—these shape us. And just like the gardener in Jesus’ parable, God is at work, nurturing us with everything we need to grow, survive, and flour...

Lent & Listening: What Is God Saying to You? - Fr. Jayme Stayer 3.16.25

In the rush of daily life, it’s easy to be pulled in a thousand directions—distracted, drained, and defined by what we produce. But did you know that silence is the decoy of the Holy Spirit? We allow God’s voice to break through the noise when we embrace stillness. Silence isn’t about doing—it’s about being so we can connect with God. Today, Father Jayme Stayer invites us to slow down, take a deep breath, and truly listen as we journey through Lent. What is God saying to you right now? Let’s qui...

From Comparison to Compassion - Fr. Joe Simmons, S.J. 3.9.25

It’s so easy to fall into the comparison trap. One moment, we feel pretty good about ourselves—maybe even a little self-righteous. The next, we’re drowning in self-doubt, convinced we’ll never measure up. Either way, that little chirping voice in our heads is up to no good. Comparison doesn’t just distract us—it detours us from the good God is calling us to do. Instead of worrying about how we stack up, what if we focused on serving, loving, and lifting others up? Today, Father Joe Simmons talks...

God’s Instruction Manual - Fr. Michael Simone 2.2.25

If you've ever put together a piece of furniture without the instructions, you know how frustrating it can be. Pieces don't fit, screws go missing, and eventually, you realize—this would have been much easier if you'd just followed the manual. Well, God has given us an instruction manual for life. It’s not complicated, but it is challenging. As we prepare for Lent, it’s a good time to brush up on it—to remind ourselves that Jesus isn’t just giving us lofty ideals, but a real, practical way to li...

When We Are Lost - Fr. Pat McGrath 2.23.25

Have you ever felt spiritually lost—like you're wandering without direction, unsure of how to find your way back? Maybe you’ve questioned past choices, wrestled with doubt, or felt disconnected from God’s presence. In these moments, it’s easy to feel alone, but the truth is quite the opposite. God’s love doesn’t waver when we struggle—in fact, He draws even closer, offering guidance in unexpected ways: through a listening friend, a kind co-worker, or even a stranger’s small act of compassion. To...

Where Is Your Heart? - Fr. Pat McGrath 2.16.25

Where is your heart anchored? What is shaping your days, your choices, your relationships? Are you rooted in something deep and lasting—or are you feeling unsteady, tossed around by the noise of the world? If our hearts are in God, if we are deeply rooted in faith, then we are like a tree planted by water—strong, nourished, and able to endure. But if we are disconnected, distracted, or overwhelmed by fear, we can wither. Last week, Pope Francis wrote to the U.S. bishops about the tensions and di...

Go Deep - Fr. Pat McGrath 2.9.25

Have you ever felt like you were just skimming the surface of life—going through the motions but longing for something deeper? Maybe you sense God calling you to more, but fear or uncertainty holds you back. What would it take for you to step into the deep, to trust, and to follow where Jesus is leading? When we say yes to that invitation—when we move beyond the shallows and go deep with Jesus—everything changes. Fear gives way to faith, hesitation turns into boldness, and life opens up in ways ...

Finding Steady Ground: Faith in Unsettling Times - Fr. Pat McGrath 2.2.25

Right now, the world can feel unsettling—political shifts, societal changes, and the inhumane treatment of the most vulnerable leave many of us feeling rattled. In times like these, how do we find our footing? What is our true north when everything seems to be shifting around us? And perhaps most importantly, how do we know what to do? The answer is, Jesus is our rock—the foundation we need to navigate these turbulent times. We must align our lives with Christ’s mission, choosing love, peace, an...

Our Duty To Dignity- Fr. Tom Hurley 1.26.25

What does it truly mean to honor the dignity of every person in our world today? How do we live out the Gospel in a way that embraces all life, especially amid fear, uncertainty, and division? Last week, the Archbishop of Chicago reminded us that as the Body of Christ, we serve those in need, respecting and promoting the inherent dignity of every person who arrives on our doorstep no matter citizenship status, race, color or creed. His words challenge us to embody this mission in our daily lives...

In The Service of Humanity - Fr. Ed Foley 1.19.25

As we pause to honor Martin Luther King Jr. this week, it’s a moment to reflect on his vision and ask: If he were alive today, would he see a world closer to the dream he so powerfully articulated on August 28, 1963? Would he see progress toward justice, peace, and equality, or would he still find work undone? Today, we challenge ourselves with this same question: Have we been part of that progress? Have we put our faith into action to build a world where all are truly free and equal? Today, Fat...
