who is a brilliant functional medicine pharmacist who has emerged as a leading voice in the field of alternative and preventative medicine. You're going to hear his backstory. Wow. 33 years old. suffered a heart attack and he had normal cholesterol levels. And he's going to share why he believes he suffered a heart attack and the root cause of heart disease out there. And it's not cholesterol related. We'll discuss...
Environmental toxins, of course, heavy metals, but also mold illness is a big focus on this conversation today. So important. I'll share my backstory of mold illness. John will share his as well. We'll share some solutions to healing your body from mold illness. We'll discuss some of the best lifestyle hacks to burn fat, prevent chronic disease. We'll discuss the importance of regenerating your cell membranes and mitochondrial membranes, and you can do that with quality fats like Body Bio.
and a lot more. This is a very important conversation. Personally, I learned so much during this interview. This was an in-person interview here at my studio in Miami. Dr. John flew all the way down from New Jersey to be with me today and be with you all today. And you can watch the video format on youtube.com slash keto camp. We also included a link down below with Dr. John's mold toxicity.
recovery course and the supplements from BodyBio that we referenced today with the coupon codes. There's a link that has all that on one page, which we'll put in the notes down below. Without further ado, here's Dr. John Kim. Dr. John Kim, in 2015, you suffered a heart attack, and it turns out your cholesterol levels were absolutely normal. How did that happen?
I know, I was wondering the same thing when I ended up having to get a stent put in and then sitting in a cardiac ICU unit just wondering what the hell happened. So that's the thing. Main issue dealing with cardiovascular issues is not about the cholesterol issue. It's about how lipids end up getting to be oxidized, followed by...
chronic inflammatory state, nervous system dysfunction, light exposure, and such that could lead into a development of the problem. And one of the hidden issues that I found after getting a stem put in and took a lot of investigation, running different tests. found out I was dealing with heavy issue dealing with mold toxicity followed by Bartonella infection. And even out there not knowing what Bartonella is, it is a tick-borne illness.
I was in Boy Scouts all my life and didn't realize to put that all together because already it's hidden. You don't really realize it until down the line having symptoms. Unfortunately, my overall symptom was having a heart attack.
And that's really the scary part of just walking around, not realizing what you're dealing with. And that's the thing. And then I had a history of living in a very moldy house. My parents had... leaky basement all the time and all we did was growing up was just bleach the wall just to clean it and you know how harmful that is- That makes mold more angry doesn't it? Angry and as was releasing different bottle gases and such and I never realized how bad that was and-
This is me doing functional medicine. At that point in time, I got my fellowship in functional medicine back in 2008 and been consulting patients with leaky gut issues and hormone dysfunction. But not until 2015, I ended up having to realize... the overall limitation of my education. And I had to learn to really do a deep dive how to get to the overall root cause of the issue so this way I could help more people. Not even just to get my health back.
but helping more people out there to know the root cause issue and to be their own best doctor. It's so important. How old were you when you suffered that heart attack in 2015? I was only 33 years old. 33 years old. Okay. normal cholesterol levels, and your stress bucket was just overflowing. Overflowing, absolutely. Because I just started a compounding pharmacy at that point. So mental stress. Mental stress, obviously physical stress because I was not sleeping very well.
eating what i can just to survive at that point chemical stress from the bartonella from the mold And then all of a sudden your body, you have a heart attack. Could you give us the specifics of the heart attack? What did it do? What were the blockage? Yeah, absolutely. So, you know, I thought I was just dealing with a simple heartburn and I was just walking out with a heartburn for 48 hours.
It felt like heartburn, like in your chest? It felt like you're… Actually, initially it was just a set of my chest and then having to resonate down to my left arm after 48 hours. And then I knew, like, I'm thinking there was something else going on here.
So instead of going to the ER like a smart person, I actually went to the urgent care center the following day. I probably would have done the same thing, to be honest. I'm like, I don't want to go to the ER. I'm like, what if it's just a regular Harper, right? No, it wasn't. Ended up sent to the ER, and then they found out that, you know, actually, you know what? Initially, the ER doctors, including cardiologists, didn't believe that I was having a heart attack. Here's a guy who's 33 years old.
They already looked at the lipid panel from three months before because I had a physical done. And they're like, everything looks normal. This guy's not dealing with a heart attack. Do you remember what your numbers were? Your cholesterol? I'm not too sure. But everything was in the normal range. The standard reference range. Absolutely. The standard reference range is always normal in terms of what you're looking at.
And so even a regular cardiologist who's trained in looking at lipids, well, kind of, we know that there's a bigger story behind that, but… He even said, you're dealing with pericarditis, which is an inflammation within the surrounding tissue of your heart. Well, when I did the echocardiogram...
they found out that my lower ventricles were not pumping correctly. Definitely there's some kind of ischemia going on. So they end up having to put me in a cath lab and then end up putting dye in just to see how much of a blockage they had. I had 85% blockage in my left interior descending artery, aka the Widowmaker, right? So younger you are, because of the fact that you don't have a compensatory blood vessels, end up having to be formed during those blockade going on.
you could end up having to die quicker as a young person. And the surprising part, and I say this is God's grace, is that my troponin level was less than one. So every classical symptoms you're dealing with, a heart attack, a trained cardiologist... completely dismissed me as having a heart attack until I got into the cath lab and this guy is like, oh my god, we have to stent this guy right now. So that's the surprising part. So I woke up, you know.
90 minutes later, literally, in the cardiac ICU unit, sitting there. You're like, what happened? And this is the part that you get to wonder, like, what kind of choices could I have made differently? Up to that point, right? And everything that you learned about cholesterol, being normal, everything else, end up having to just crumble in front of you. And you question everything that you knew.
And that's the crazy part. And the funny part of the story, and this is something that you're going to really love, is that the first meal that I got in the cardiac IC unit was fried chicken and tater tots. And then I got… Rice pudding. Of course. So this is a standard diet that the hospital gives to a cardiac patient. That's what lends people in the hospital. The food that they're giving them. Do you remember if you looked at your inflammatory markers at all back then?
that was not really wrong either. So there's a lot of missing pieces. But here's the thing that I end up having to look back and there were a lot of telltale signs that I was dealing with a lot of inflammation. First off, I had major indigestion problem. So anytime I end up having to eat.
red meat, for instance, or meal with a high fiber, I get constant bloating. It's a major sign of gut dysbiosis going on, had very smelly breath, not anymore, but had very bad smelly breath. That's a sign of the fact that... You actually have some type of yeast, chronic yeast issue that's actually happening internally. That's another second sign I was dealing with. High levels of anxiety issues. Could not really go to sleep that well.
without use of some type of agent. Maybe melatonin or some kind of maybe lemon balm. I had to use something just to get me to sleep. And there was a lot of telltale signs but I completely ignored it. I think that's a lot of issue with practitioners. Where we're so busy helping our clients. But then we forget to reflect on our own self. And happen to… help ourselves or even just to reach out to ask him for help. What's cool is the body gives us signs, right? It gives us these check engine lights.
So it was communicating with us. Like for you, it was the bloating. It was the fact that you would lay down in bed and not be able to fall asleep. Your mind was probably just racing. You were just wired, very sympathetic driven.
The body's always giving us symptoms, but are we paying attention to it? Unfortunately, you had to suffer a heart attack and they call it the widow maker because it wipes people out. It kills people. It creates widows. So it's a blessing that you're still around and you got over that. let's talk about the mold part because you mentioned that the your parents had a leaky basement mold was growing there mold is everywhere it also impacted me and i'll share a little bit about my story with you but
Share how mold, these mycotoxins, what it does to create inflammation in the body, what it does to destroy our mitochondria. How does it lead to disease, this environmental mold? Yeah, there's several factors how mold or at least what mold releases us. toxins or mycotoxins that have to impact your entirety of the cells. So especially it causes lipid peroxidation. So it damages the cell membrane on top of the fact that it actually increases the production of cholesterol. Why?
Because one of the phenomena that actually occurs is to really relieve the leaky cell membrane, the damaging of the cell membrane, to fix that, the body now is producing cholesterol. to mend the actual cell membrane caused by the mycotoxins. So it's acting like a band-aid. It really, it comes out to that point. So this is a part that when you're looking at lipid levels being elevated, you have to really question, is this a...
chronic inflammation that's actually happening. And I see that in my patients who's dealing with mycotoxins. I have to review the lab sometimes and I'm having to see that their overall LDL level is very elevated, right? telltale sign on other levels that the HDL level is low, triglycerides are being elevated at the same time. So there's a telltale sign that there is a chronic inflammatory condition that's happening at this point in time. And then when you have a history...
And you got to do a lot of investigation, but history of mycotoxins and particularly using of urine mycotoxin testing to see what type of mycotoxins you're dealing with. especially talking about ocrotoxin, aflatoxin, and chakothecins, which are the black mold or stachybotrys, you actually have a dysfunctional lipid metabolism that goes on where the lipids are being oxidized.
You have a cell membrane structural damage that's happening there. You also have a low levels of fluidity that goes on the cell membrane. So there's a whole term called cell danger response coined by Dr. Robert Navio. So if you look at the early part of the cell danger response, it's about the innate immune system firing up. And the interesting part is that the mitochondria takes over.
to increasing phospholipids or the lipid cholesterol to be produced within the cell to contain the actual damage. To deal with the threat, the stress. The threat and to contain that particular damage. And so this is the part that you forget to see that there is a role of the mitochondria to protect the cell itself and the function and also...
It's not producing energy anymore. We understand that mitochondria always end up having to produce energy. Mitochondria has a different role, actually multiple roles in terms of producing steroids. But the main thing is the cholesterol and as was controlling the innate immune response. and to also protect the body from further damage. So the methylation process goes down. Your produced production of energy goes on at the same time.
But the key issue is that there's only so much of the lipid reserve that you actually have in the body. As a result, your cells end up being leaky. Or I call it the Swiss cheese effect. So you cannot detox very well. There's a lack of cell-to-cell communication that's happening at that point in time. And multiple issues where you cannot detox either. And another aspect that goes on is…
your overall antioxidant capacity, especially glutathione, end up having to be impacted. And that's where you're not able to detox more very well. And then if you actually have some type of genotype issue, like HLA genotype. It affects about 25% of the population who actually is dealing with the mold. But if you have that, it's almost nearly impossible to get the person cleared out because of the predisposition issue that's happening. And then on top of methylation problem...
which could be impacting the level of glutathione production. So there's a lot of interplaying into the effect. And then you talk about certain organ systems, especially liver being impacted. On top of you're not able to produce bile as well. So clearing out some of the cholesterol could be impacted. You might be dealing with indigestion because of chronic yeast or mold overgrowth or colonization.
And there's a part where we need to address about colonization of the mold in the sinus and the gut. And so there's definitely hierarchical issues that you have to address with clients. And you have to let them understand that this is not an overnight fix. But once you identify it, first thing first we have to do is we have to get the fatty acid imbalance fixed and the mitochondria supported and then having to walk them through to change the overall microbiome problem.
Let's unpack a little bit about what you just shared because it's just so important. I want my audience to really get it. A lot of you watching and listening, you probably have symptoms and just feel off. probably is a mold exposure. I'm not saying from your food. I'm saying in your environment, maybe in your apartment, in your house. You just mentioned the cell danger response, Dr. Robert Navio, who does a really good job. You kind of coined that, right?
And the mitochondria are acting as this role of a surveillance system for threats. And when we have too many threats, as you just mentioned, that cascade of things start to happen. Energy production lowers. Methylation drops, glutathione drops, incongruent with the methylation. And as glutathione drops, methylation drops, more vicious cycle. And then you just feel...
awful. Like COVID, for example. And I know you deal with a lot of long-haul symptoms. That's a cell danger response. Their mitochondria went into this wartime metabolism, as he explains it, to do it on purpose. It does it on purpose to deal with the threat. Why do we want to produce all this energy and use our resources when we have all these stressors going on? In this case, we're talking about mold, but it could be any stress.
Then when the threat is gone, the mitochondria are supposed to come back online to this peacetime metabolism, but they get locked into this cell danger response. So you're saying one of the key things here is to help... the mitochondria membranes and the cell membranes regenerate their quality, their integrity. So they're more fluid. And that's by bringing in healthy fats. Did I get that right? Absolutely. So you had a guest here before.
Body bio. I mean, when I say body bio, it saved my life. And we'll tell you a little more about that story later on. But use of phospholipids, especially use of alpha linoleic acid and linoleic acid, especially in the… four to one ratio. Which, by the way, is an omega-6 seed oil, but not all omega-6 seed oils are bad. This is very high quality, important omega-6 seed oil. It actually gives you a lot more structural support when there's a membrane as well.
The other thing that really helps out is the butyrate. Sodium butyrate is really impactful not only to support to getting your gut and your colonocytes to be fed and function very well and to support the overall microbiome. But the butyrate is a chemical chaperone. It actually helps to cleave off the actual mole toxins of the cell membrane, which is called the DNA adduct. It actually attaches to DNA and changes the function. And this is where the epigenetic changes that goes on.
that we keep forgetting about that. So how do we end up having to explain to clients? Let's talk about vitamin D, for instance. In terms of how our vitamin D receptor end up having to downgrade because of D. Motoxin. That in itself changes the function of the organ and the tissue because of the certain danger that goes on. So if you...
If audience out there, if you want to really read the nuance of what the cell danger response that Ben and I were talking about, Dr. Robert Navio talks a lot about this in terms of the healing cycle within the cell dangers response two and three. where the body's proliferative or healing phase goes incorrectly end up getting stuck or the actual organ system changes in function.
and describes a lot about chronic pain, autoimmune disorders, etc., which can be impacted on a patient heavily. And then you wonder why you're doing all these different things, including changing your diet. And then as well as taking certain vitamins and medications and nothing seems to move the dial.
Would you say the first step, even before doing what you just explained, the first step would be to identify where the exposure is coming from and get out of that exposure? Like if you have mold in your house, like, yeah, it makes sense to do… the things you need to do to regenerate the cell membranes, but don't you got to get out of that exposure first and foremost?
It is very important, but sometimes it can be impossible for you to do it as well. And especially in Miami, where you are, and especially what's happening right now within the western coastal part of Florida with a hurricane, is nearly impossible to get out of. I had clients where they were in complete denial until they get their urine mycotoxin testing and had them to do their own home testing by hiring a professional. Then they realized what kind of damage that they had on.
And they had some stories. Well, I had a leak in the basement. I didn't realize how impactful that was. Or I had an issue with the HVAC. It smelled very moldy and misty when you get home. Well, there's signs of that, but… The issue is that certain mold toxins are odorless. Yeah. There's no scent to it. It's true. And you don't even realize that until you end up having to feel like crap as year goes on, month goes on, and that could be impacting a lot of health.
But the thing is, just because you're impacted does not mean that your spouse or your kids might be impacted as well. Because the issue all behind is how much of a mold exposure you're getting within that short period of time. or within the period of time that you end up having to be exposed to. So you might be having slight bit of a brain fog or indigestion issues. Nothing more that you're going to be saying, oh, that's a mole problem.
And then months goes by, year goes by, and then you start to develop all these different issues dealing with eczema. Your immune system is being impacted. Why is that? Because certain mycotoxins, especially gliotoxin for instance, lowers your immune system. So you're more prevalent of potentially getting into other co-infections like Lyme disease. Like for me, mold is probably the most impactful thing that I actually had, followed by Bartonella and Epstein-Barr issues.
on top of mycoplasma, and then heavy metals. All these are impactful things that people don't realize until they get the, I mean, the Jesus moment. We're like, come to Jesus moment. I'm like, I have issues. Yeah, you know, it's crazy, the mold thing. I dealt with it in my past as well. In 2018, I was living in a house, actually not too far from here, this location.
where not only was I living in a moldy home that I was unaware of, I had eight silver fillings in my mouth. I was overtraining. I owned a CrossFit gym at that time. I was in the process of selling the gym, so a lot of mental stress. I got out of that exposure, did some heavy metal detox, and did some mold detox. But then...
Last year, I moved into a townhouse with my fiance. About 20 minutes north of here, John, we moved into this beautiful townhouse. We were renting, built out a studio just like this, spent a lot of money and time building out the studio. And we were just there for five months and I started to notice, number one, I was feeling a little fatigued in the afternoon. And this was not normal for me because I usually have really good energy levels. And I thought, okay, that's interesting.
Number two, my fiance started getting these headaches and some sinus issues and our cats are getting sinus issues. And then I noticed when I would leave the house and come inside after a few hours, there was that mildew sort of smell. That's not always there, like you mentioned, but I didn't notice it or clothes kind of smelled like that. So I said, man, there has to be mold here. It was a new townhouse, 2017, but I was like, there has to be mold here.

That's joincrowdhealth.com slash carnivore. Use the code vitamin G. We will include this in the notes down below. So I have a really good friend who's a building biologist. His name is Ryan Blazer, and he has a company called Test My Home.
And I emailed him one morning. It was a Wednesday morning, actually October of last year, actually 12 months ago. I emailed him on a Wednesday morning. I'm like, look, I think I have molds and I don't really trust a lot of companies that do testing. Like, I know you're really good. I'd love to see when you're going to be in Florida. He lives in Idaho.
or Iowa, one of those states. Starts with an I. Yeah, starts with an I. And he said, oh, he responded to me right away. And he said, I'm actually in West Palm Beach. he's looking at a house. We're doing some work there. I could drive down and see you that same day. I'm like, please, yes. So he comes over with all his stuff and he's doing all the investigation. He has his meter. He has all these different things and he found mold.
all over the place, in both HVACs, behind our toilets, in the gym. He found where the original, behind the fridge, there was water damage that the previous owner had, and I couldn't see it because the fridge was there. And he's like, you got mold all over the place, dude.
So we ended up, I broke the lease. I didn't even want to deal with it. We were renting. Thankfully, we didn't own. I broke the lease. We found this place where we did a test. There's no mold. I have these Jasper machines running. We also had it fogged just in case.
But then I went through the mold detox protocol, right? I did the body bio, the PCO, the butyrate, different things. And in just a few months, I felt incredible. Like I got the mycotoxins out of my body. My fiance's symptoms all went away and I felt incredible, right? But... If I didn't go through all that, I would still be struggling. If I would have stayed there.
A year into this, like you said, I would have probably been even more fatigued. I would have probably had reoccurring headaches, more digestive issues. So this is a very important topic. Is there any company that you recommend for coming to homes and testing?
Well, it's all regionally based. And that's something that you're going to have to really do some research and figuring out. But I don't know if you know Michael Rubino. Yes, I know of him. Yeah. Yes. So he actually has an at-home testing that you could purchase. It's around like $275. I do recommend that really.
for my clients because you may not have the overall budget to spend $1,000 to $3,000 to do it. If you can, great, because those companies, if they're really professional, if they know what they're doing. They're going to come in and then they may end up having to use some kind of a thermal gun to see what kind of moisture you're actually collecting behind the wall. Sampling of the air, including surface testing.
To really give you that. That's exactly what Ryan did. This is a really important part. And the second part they also do is to give you a remediation plan. Yeah. Right. So one thing that what Michael Rubino's company is called a dust test. Right. That is going to be. where it is a very powerful testing. It gives you really much the accuracy because there's a different generation of PCR testing that could be done to check for mycotoxins and mold.
The biggest thing is that he actually gives you a free, his company actually gives you a free analysis as well as consultation. So this way, you know what to ask somewhat. when you're dealing with a more remuneration company. Because there's so many companies out there. They end up having to do the testing and remuneration at the same time, which is a big no-no. But this actually happens within the industry. Yeah, and there's also…
mold restoration companies and mold remediation companies. And they're very different. Restorations are not going to actually remediate and get to the actual source. So make sure you do it the right way. Pure Maintenance is another good company that actually used...
They're nationwide. They have different subsets. They have like Pure Maintenance Miami, Pure Maintenance. I don't know if they have one in New Jersey, maybe. But I had them come in. It's not cheap. It's a dollar per square foot. So depending on how big your place is. But they have this non-toxic fogging system. Have you heard of Pyramidians before? Yeah. So I had them.
And I didn't think this place had mold. I did my own little test, but I had them come here and spray everything and all my stuff. I brought all my furniture, all my clothes, and I had them fog everything just as a precautionary. So there's a few things you can do. I do think it's important too. You don't necessarily have to move. People with that genetic stamp might be so sensitive that they actually have to move, throw away their stuff. I know Richie Shoemaker.
who really pioneered a lot of these mold protocols, colostyramine. And he was really bold with like, if you have this genetic SNP, you're doomed. And I don't think that's the case. Can you share a little bit more? If you do have that genetic SNP, you could see. still do some progress, right? So Dr. Rich Shoemaker, one of the pioneers in this field of mold and mycotoxins, and he coined a term called SIRS, right? Talking about chronic inflammatory response syndrome. And this is a part that...
could be really impacting everything from your hormonal dysregulation issues to your dealing with gut, followed by neurological problem and such. The thing about that is that just because you have certain genotype issues...
And this is part where the DNA comes in. Just because you have DNA doesn't mean that that's going to overall predict your future. You have many ways to fixing and as well as to controlling it so you could at least… function and actually have the quality of life that you're looking for, right?
And one of the things that I always say is you got to get your cell membrane fixed. You got to get your lipid metabolism to a certain level. You have to keep the right diet. Yes, it's going to suck because now you have to really live based on this particular strike. criteria of eating certain meals. And I recommend patients to doing a seasonal paleo-based diet, including sometimes ketogenic.
for at least three months just to get their overall lipid metabolism and lipid content to be increased, at the same time getting rid of any offending issues that's going to cause high levels of histamine and allergies. And this is the important part.
Your food is your medicine. That has to be the first thing that really have to be impacted rather than using some type of powerful binding agents like colostylamin. And Dr. Rich Shoemaker actually had used colostylamin. It actually really impacts a lot of people very well.
It binds to ocultoxin. But the problem is that it actually binds to phospholipids in the gut. So it actually renders your actual cell membrane worse when you're doing these things. I'm not a big fan of binders either. Binders are great. The issue is, if you're not going to the bathroom regularly, or let's just say you're not sweating very well either, which happens to be the case with people dealing with mold toxins, well, binders can actually make it worse.
This is the key issue and key difference of people who do well. on a mold protocol versus who would get worse by doing certain things. Yeah, that's important to know. And I actually did well with binders, right? I sweat often. I go to the bathroom regularly. But to your point, everybody's different. And I know the cholestyramine also, a lot of people got constipated from it, to your point.
So the main thing is the cell membrane, right? That's where the intelligence is, right? The cell membrane is so important. not just the cell membrane, but the mitochondrial membrane, regenerating those membranes. That's why we love phosphatidylcholine from BodyBio. Amazing way to regenerate the cell membranes. What are other good ways to regenerate those membranes?
One of the things that I recommend always is BodyBell PC. The balance oil. As well as the sodium butyrate. I also utilize to use evening primrose oil as well. So special omega-9. That's a really impactful thing that you could end up having to do. So GLA. Other thing including is tatka. Chekchi helps not only to help you digest fat and as well as to protecting your liver.
But one thing that Taka really does well, and this is the part where this intricacy of the cell membrane medicine comes in, is that Taka actually helps to unfold the protein misfolding within the cells. So when you actually have a leaky cell membrane going, I mentioned about how mycotoxins end up having to cause lipid peroxidation. Well, it caused a lipid raft. So basically it comes into a complete jubbled up ball basically.
Well, TUTCA actually comes in to unravel that and proper formation of the DNA structure. So it's really impactful of how we can support that process. Another thing that I like to really do is the dietary portion that I mentioned about before. eating more of a ketogenic, more of a paleo-based diet, but more seasonally as well. So depending on where you are. So a person living in New Jersey versus who living in Florida.
the type of food locally is going to be very different. So you got to eat very seasonally based on your local areas in terms of working with the farmers and then also getting the proper meat intake. So I do recommend getting more rudimentary. animals such as bison, beef, lamb. I'm not a big fan of chicken. The reason being is depending on the feed that you actually feed the chicken, there could be higher levels of...
linoleic acid, which is a lot more oxidized in that sense of that. So I'm not a big fan of it. If you need to eat it, great. There are certain patients who actually have alpha-gal issues where they do have a red meat sensitivity problem. It's pretty rare, no? It is rare, but I did have a couple of them. Wow. I've never came across that personally with a client. And it's so hard to really recommend a certain diet. Because now they've got to be protein-based.
and then having to transition. But some do end up able to go back to eating meat once their Lyme issue has been pulled and cleared out. So there's a lot of different things actually happening there. But like I said, fatty acid intake is really important to really calm the cell danger response, to get the actual lipid portion of the cell membrane mended. And then along that same time, really...
changing the diet, and then also fixing your gut. Your gut microbiome is what's being really impacted as well. So use of sodium butyrate, for instance, if you are constipated because of mold toxins. sodium butyate is going to be a great friend. That's going to help to increase gastrointestinal motility. You may have some diarrhea, but you know what? It's sometimes better than having constipation issues, not having to detox.
And one of the things is that after about four to six weeks, your bowel movement starts to normalize. So I really like using sodium butyrate. And then certain motility agents I like to use, such as ginger, is great for this purpose, right? And then... Another thing that could be helpful is aloe. Aloe not only helps to use as a laxative, but also helps to bind to certain...
mold toxins as well. I didn't know that. That it binds to mold toxins. So aloe vera juice. Aloe vera juice or at least specifically concentrated aloe vera. I know it was good for the gut. I didn't know it binds to mold toxins. That's good to know.
By the way, for those watching and listening, we'll put a link for BodyBio in a coupon code if you want to check out any of their products. I know that you love BodyBio. I do too. But how did they save your life? I know the story, but tell the audience how they literally saved your life. Right.
After coming back from the hospital, I just sat in front of my TV, just completely staring at a wall for seven days, literally, wondering how... I could have been in this situation having a heart attack at the age of 33. I mean, even the doctor, before I got discharged, he says, you're the youngest patient to get a stent put in. Wow. I mean, I should have gotten an award for that. Not an award you want. But that's the scenario. So I...
wanted to find more answers. So I went to my functional medicine doctor, great friend who I've known since 2006. And she looked at me, she says, you know, I think you're dealing with some type of tick-borne illness. I'm like, there's no way. I had no signs of bullseye. now i know that's not the scenario you don't have to have that you don't have to have that and so we got the blood testing done after about uh six weeks later i got my results back and i had
very high levels of aspergillus antibodies. So I had definitely mold issues there. At that point, the uterine mycotoxin testing was not very well developed. So this was the early parts of that, followed by... Bartonella infection, mycoplasma, mycoplasma pneumoniae, followed by Epstein-Barr, and very high levels of mercury. Where did you get the mercury from? Did you have fillings?
This is the part that I am very shameful of. So growing up, I don't know if you remember those pink antiseptic mercurium. I've seen them on the internet, but not in person, though. Right, right. So in Korea, when I was growing up, so I was born in Korea. I came here when I was nine years old. And at that time, Mercurium was one of the top antiseptic to use.
So anytime I get a cut, my grandmother would actually apply that on my cut itself to get instant absorption. Of mercury right into your bloodstream. And then on top of, I used to love... breaking mercury thermometers. Just to play with the mercury. So like as a kid, you don't even realize it, right? Another impactful thing that goes on, especially at that point in time, the 80s in South Korea.
because there was such a big issue with Japanese encephalitis issues from mosquitoes, there'd be trucks spraying pesticides all over every corner of the street. And then my friends and I would chase after that truck because we thought that was so cool. Now I'm looking back, I'm like, what an idiot. So like environment really matters. I'm telling you, environment really matters. What you do, what you get exposed to early on.
It accumulates. And we see this in a blood test as well. There are testing called IGL. It's a German blood testing. It's generally what is an epigenetic testing looks for. And it looks at DNA adduct. looking at how certain toxins such as mold toxins like fumonesin and as well as ochrotoxin being embedded into cell membrane. And we see this, which is crazy. On top of EPA.
mercury, triclosan, which is prevalent in hand sanitizers, and Colgate total toothpaste. Of course. Does it also look for glyphosate? Glyphosate as well. Those are embedded into a cell membrane. So all these things are impacting your cells. The thing is… you're not going to get rid of it. There's no way a binder is able to do that. But we know for sure there are studies showing that proper fatty acid intake followed by using certain types of chemical chaperone, especially butyrate.
helps to cleave that and then getting that wet off. And then, so what I try to explain to my clients is this. Butyrate comes in to cleave off all the damages or at least the issues on the cell membrane and the DNA. The tutka comes in to fix that actual DNA structure in the cell membrane. PC, or the phospholipid, comes in to sweep that away for you. So it actually acts like a vacuum, but at the same time comes in.
to mend the cell membrane and also relieve the lipid peroxidation that goes on. So it's really impactful how when you're looking at blood tests. looking at certain ways of how these supplements end up having to impact and changing the epigenetic profile is impactful and life-changing. And that's how I end up having to experience as well. And when I say body bio saved by life, literally they did.
So what my doctor had done was their body body actually runs this particular test. It's called a red blood cell fatty acid analysis through Kennedy Krieger. And at that point in time, Dr. Ed Kane, the founder of BodyBio, he actually analyzed my blood test. He recommended a lipid replacement therapy based on my needs.
That was really the impactful thing that I did. I mean, like I said, because of that reason, I was able to get my life back. So even before I met Jess Kane or anyone else at Body Body, I mean, that's something that was really impactful of this person. who read my blood test, gave me a recommendation, and then I was able to get my life back and looking at these things. And you know what? At that point in time, you could have used some of the pharmaceutical antifungals.
as well as use of antibiotics. The issue is pharmaceuticals are, and they're tools, right? You could use it at the right time. The biggest issue is that it causes mitochondrial dysfunction. And I talk about this all the time, that drugs... induces mitochondrial dysfunction when you use it incorrectly. And this is a time that you should not be stressing the heart because you know why? Because you already had an inflammatory condition within the heart.
your mitochondria is already in a dysfunctional state, why put additional stressors? And so my doctor was very smart enough not to do that, but resorting to doing lipid replacement therapy to get my cardiovascular system clean and as well as to...
getting my infections and the toxins cleared up. I'm so glad that you went down that path. Thank God. And I love Body Bio. They're a fantastic company. They have great history as well. You know, you mentioned some of those lipid markers. You mentioned... total cholesterol, which is pretty meaningless, but LDL, there's LDL particles as well. You mentioned the HDL, the triglycerides. That gives you more of a better picture of what's going on. But then what are your thoughts on like...
high sensitivity C-reactive protein, maybe even like a fasting insulin as a marker for heart disease. What are your thoughts on other metrics for heart disease? So, you know, LPA is one of the top things I look at. I'm also looking at fasting gluten.
glucose level as well as insulin level as well. Cortisol is another thing that I looked at. What's the last one? Cortisol. Cortisol, got it. Are you looking at it through blood or saliva? Salivate hormone testing. So these are things that really impact. It's not about the cholesterol. It's about the actual issue dealing with stress and insulin resistance that's really impacting the level of lipid being oxidized, right? And sugar in itself is the biggest culprit.
I'm looking at. At the same time, when you're looking at certain mycotoxins when you're dealing with these things, mycotoxins impacts your sugar dysregulation. This is really a problem. not only end up having to affect the liver and as well as your bile production and your gallbladder and such, but your insulin production, it gets haywire. And so when you're looking at these patients with fasting glucose level...
is usually above 90 or up to 100 in a fasting level. And then when you look at the morning cortisol level, it's very elevated as well. So they're in a constant fight-or-flight response where they cannot seem to get everything under control. Even when you're doing a low ketogenic diet, for instance, they may not be able to get their insulin function controlled until they get their microbiome issues and the cell membrane mended. It's about three months or so.
And I see that big difference once they start to notice that they're getting better sleep. They're not wired middle of the day, especially when they're skipping meals or they feel less anxious. So you see physical changes that goes on. But that's the thing. People start noticing, oh my god, I never felt normal before. Now I'm feeling much better. Better regulation of what I'm eating, how I'm reacting to certain…
issues as well as feeling much more calm and under control. I love that. I love the protocol. It makes so much sense to me. Are you looking at metrics for the nervous system like heart rate variability? Is that something you look at at all? That is a powerful tool. So one of the things that I did when I was going through my treatment, at that point in time, Oura Ring was not available. And there's a company called Omega Wave. And it was founded by...
Norwegian scientists, and they took a lot of HRV data and science from the Russians. And Russians were doing this far longer than we had expected, right? They are doing things ahead of us. A lot. Peptides. A lot, right? At that point in time, my trainer, he actually, after I got out of the hospital, I came to him and I was like, you know what? I need some rehab. I need to do some cardiac rehab. And one of the key things that he wanted to do was increasing my VO2 max. Yes, yeah. So…
To put less of a stress on the heart, he had me measure my HIV rating in the morning, mid-afternoon, right before I work out, after I work out, and as well as before I go to sleep. And depending on the HIV rating... the level of exercise would go up or go down, and he would never put additional stress in the body. That really made an impactful change. You know, we're only looking at the HRV based on, all right, we slept well.
When you really work with a guy who knows what he's doing with the HRV rating, and I look at this more impactful as well, I actually tell clients, if you can, take a picture of your screenshot in the morning and then do a mid-reading if you can.
and tell me how it is. And also listen to your body. You got to be very intuitive of listening to your body as well. Sometimes your body's like, no more. You shouldn't be doing that, right? Especially if you had gone only four hours of sleep and then you decide to do some heavy exercise.
That's a no-no. That actually impacts more issue on your adrenals, right? And the recovery process. And you're going to get sicker if you're dealing with some type of toxin issues. Yeah. That's really cool that he did that. continuous HRV monitoring with you. Have you ever wondered how so many people manage to stay on top of their health despite the hustle and bustle of life? The secret might just be a Carroll bike.

Use the coupon code freedom and go get your Carol bike and work on your fitness. and VO2 max. HRV is so important, right? It's giving you an idea of your ability to adapt to stress. And yeah, it's cool to have the mindset like I'm just going to push myself and do it, but…
That'll catch up with you. And the goal is to not avoid stress. The goal is to adapt to the stress better. Correct. To raise that hormetic ceiling. Yes. And HRV, the higher you get your HRV, I would say the higher this hormetic ceiling gets for you, right?
So that's an impactful thing that I tell clients as well. One of the things that's been really impactful is to teach them how to regulate the nervous system with dysfunction. So one of the tools that I love using is heart coherency. Heart math, breathing. It's something that I teach my clients early on because when you interact with them, there's a lot of issues dealing with trauma and then the stress from the illness they're dealing with. But in order for them to undertake...
the amount of work that they have to do. Because when you start doing the mold detox, it's very daunting. It could be stressing you even more. That happens to me. I did too much too soon. I got really tired. Tired very quickly, right? And then you get overwhelmed from that.
And then the entire life just becomes more stressful. And this is a part that I teach clients how to create that heart coherency to actually have a better ways to managing stress and having a better resilience to handle stress. So what is heart coherency? Well, our heart actually has an energy field. It's another brain, basically. And it's able to feel, able to learn from the environment.
The issue is that when there's such a disconnect from your past experiences such as trauma, stress you end up having to deal with, as well as you might be dealing with some type of biotoxin issues and such. There's a huge disconnect that goes between your heart rhythm and your brain. So there's that, we didn't talk about gut and brain access. You also have to talk about our heart and brain access as well. Big, big role in doing so.
So how do we create that? Well, I teach them how to think happy thoughts, loving thoughts. When you shift to that particular thought process of what's making you joyful, happy, grateful, right? You shift the actual internal coherency level in real time, and you could experience this in less than 30 seconds. And I teach them how to do breath work correctly to actually manage their overall stress response.
and teaching them to do so because our brain cannot perceive whether they're dealing with a physical stress mental stress or emotional stress stress to stress and that in itself just impacts everything from inflammatory process to how well you're able to manage your immune system down to your overall detox as well. I love that you do that because we have 60,000 thoughts a day. It's like those are 60,000 opportunities to put your body in this healing state. Absolutely.
So I love that. That's such an important tool that I think a lot of people undervalue. Yeah, I heard to think positive. No, it's, you know, the more you put yourself in this loving, grateful state, this positive state. these adaptations happen really really fast these these changes happen really fast i know dr bruce lipton
He talks about your thoughts being a frequency that communicate with your DNA, and it signals different protein changes with a single thought. A hateful, angry thought will signal inflammatory responses. A loving, grateful thought will signal... anti-inflammatory proteins. It protects our telomeres, which protects our DNA. And that's just with our thoughts. So I love that you do that. What's a simple tip that the audience can do?
To get themselves in this healing, thoughtful, loving state. What's a simple tip? Simple thing. You just sit down. Sit comfortably. Close your eyes. And just think about what's making you happy, joyful, and what you're grateful about. If you cannot think about that…
You have to work on it, obviously. But some people who've been such in a high dysfunctional state, they don't know what that feels like. A lot of work to be done. But that's a key thing there. And the first thing you could do is close your eyes. Think about that. Second part. to breathe into the nose five seconds and exhaling out. And do that about five minutes. Really, really changes your mindset. You get more energized. You feel much more at rest, much more...
Round it. So I even recommend, let's just say you go into a busy meeting, let's just say. Or a stressful meeting, for instance. I would recommend closing your eyes and do that heart coherency breathing technique. about five minutes. It's going to really change your tone and how you tackle that problem. Beautiful. Great. Simple. Anybody could do that. It's free too. Let's talk a little bit about artificial light, artificial junk light. We're both wearing blue light blockers for those.
watching on youtube and it's a big problem these days right we have this this art it's everywhere we have these big lights right here we have the lights back here And this is doing some protection. But what role does artificial light and a circadian mismatch have with our stress levels? Sure. So it wasn't for style? It's both. It's style and protection. So there's…
We're inundated with artificial toxic light, especially talking about blue lights coming from screens. We are inundated for our technology, especially for our cell phones. And what it does is it actually causes a... issued into a dysfunctional state, not only in your nervous system. And one of the things that I posted on Instagram is I was sitting in a hotel room.
And I was just looking above and I noticed that the light was constantly flickering. But it wasn't just a one single bulb. All LED lights end up having to impact this. So you think about being in a indoor constantly… Under LED lights… And then you have to look at your computer screen constantly, that blue light on top of your cell phone. Everything is causing some type of nervous system dysfunction by those type of toxic light. That also affects your circadian rhythm as well.
Blue light has been shown to decrease in malatona production. So one thing that I teach clients, and this actually is one of the things that I learned from my clients as well. Our clients are the best teachers, I think. The reason being is... We may not know everything until we get to work with them. And some of the problematic, most difficult cases end up having to show you and humble you. And one of the things that really taught me was working with patients dealing with mast cell issues.
They're very difficult clients to work with. Not the fact that they have trouble detoxing, but every food they might be eating is reacting to different things. And one of the things that I teach clients from the get-go is… to controlling their light exposure, as well as to manage a circadian rhythm as well. So as the sun goes down, you should be blocking out artificial light as much as possible. In certain cases, I tell clients to...
Basically, in the darkness for about two, three hours, manage the nervous system, do some breath work and such. If you can, buy one of those red light bulbs you could buy to replace all the lights. And your lumen, the amount of intensity of the light, should be low enough that it should not be causing a lot of dysfunction or at least to decrease the production of melatonin itself. That's really important. And then after that, you should wake up.
at the time when the sun is going up. If you look at Ayurvedic medicine, it talks a lot about the sun, how that is impacting our overall health. Our subconscious mind as well is uprising at that point in time.
You know, everybody says that's a wu-wu medicine. No, it's not. There's a reason why these type of medicines, including Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic, being what it is, into existence still, because there's a lot of inherent truth of how our body ends up having to adapt to the overall nature.
So this is a part that I teach clients. To wake up at the right time. Get the sun exposed as you can. 20 minutes if you can. Start grounding. The grounding aspect is so important. So vital to… Not only to help getting your negative ions… positive state, one of the things that could be impactful is to act on your inflammatory process. There are studies showing grounding in itself helps with inflammation. So this is a part that I also teach as well. Now, it can be very difficult.
During winter. So you could get certain grounding pads or I actually have a grounding mattress cover that I utilize on a nightly basis. And then you could use some other things including red light panels to help with the correct light exposure. And certain… levels of near-infrared can be very helpful, including for your skin, but also for your immune system. So this is the part that I teach clients to utilize these things and...
Also, eat at the right time. Eating is so important to regulating your circadian rhythm as well. These clients who are dealing with mold issues and issues dealing with insulin resistance, I tell them not to skip meals. I've been doing intermittent fasting. I know that's very impactful. It is. Not until you get your overall issue under control and your overall cortisol issues under control.
then we could talk about intermittent fasting later on. So it's a short issue you might have to under control. And that's a tool in itself, right? So this is the type of things that I recommend patients to do. And then never skipping meals, you know, have the right amount of protein. breakfast lunch and dinner and then you should be stopping your meals at least three hours before you go to sleep
That's a good rule of thumb. Yeah, at least three hours before bed. If you could do longer, even better. But you're right. A lot of people are in the habit of eating late at night, eating after dark. I mean, one simple rule is like, don't eat anything after the sun has set, right?
That goes aligned with your circadian rhythm, with your hormones. A lot of people, unfortunately, eat very late. I always tell my fiance, she likes to eat a little bit later. And when I say later, I mean like 6.37. That's late to me. I told her like, if I was single, I'd eat at 4 p.m. I'd be like an old man. Like I'm done. And then I want to give myself five hours of fasting before bed. You know, a few years ago, I used to think that it was better to skip breakfast and eat lunch and dinner.
Now, and this is outside of what you just said about not practicing fasting. For those who practice fasting, the studies are showing that it's better to have breakfast and lunch and skip dinner if you're going to skip a meal. To have most of your calories actually during the day and in the morning time, which is something that…
I thought it was the complete opposite, but it makes sense with their circadian rhythm. And I hope you guys don't mitigate, guys and gals, do not mitigate the value of what Dr. John just shared here, like light exposure. is everywhere. Artificial light, blue light is everywhere. And we can't escape it, but there are some things we can do to mitigate the damage. Like you said, having red light bulbs at night.
If you're an extreme case, like being in the dark at night and then going to bed. But there are blue light blocking glasses that we're wearing right now. And then the red ones go on at night, right? There's... grounding, like you mentioned. I'm a big fan of grounding as well. You could actually hug trees and also get the grounding benefits too. Which grounding mat do you use by that? Which company? Earthing.
You use the earthing one. Clint Edwards company. And then I also use the anti-aging mattress. Yeah. That's great. So those are two things. I just met John. John Baxter. Yeah. I just met him a few weeks ago. Yeah. I like him a lot. Yeah. So I was like the first ones to really pick up on his technology and utilize it. Really, really made an impact on how I was sleeping.
Yeah, ever since then, I've been a big fan of grounding as well. Yeah, I am too. And I just met John and I'm going to look into his company. I heard a lot of good things about it. It is. Okay, John, I have a few more things here as we land the plane. Yes. I have a new book coming out next year called Metabolic Freedom, and it's coming out with Hay House, June 2025. The book's all about exciting. Thank you. It's all about the metabolism and metabolic flexibility.
What are your three favorite ways to achieve metabolic freedom, a flexible metabolism? That's depending on the client. But one of the things that I always recommend is eating the right amount of protein. I think protein is the biggest impact that's going to give you the flexibility of the metabolic flexibility you're looking for. Second is muscle. You've got to have the right amount of muscle but you have to also exercise.
I don't know if you know Dr. Tina Moore. We're friends with her and she always says, train like you're going to be running away from a zombie. That really is. I like it. That's the most important thing you're going to do. So it's not that you're buying anything extra. Keep on having to move, right? Walking is really important in that process. So that's the second thing I recommend. Really building up your muscle resiliency to handle the overall flexibility.
And that goes hand in hand with the first tip because the protein will help you create muscle protein synthesis, which helps with the muscle mass. Yeah, absolutely. And then three is your overall levels of stress and nervous system dysfunction. So everything that I talk about from the beginning of the interview now, it could be applied to everywhere of my life. So if you cannot handle stress or at least the stress is overruling you…
and then the overall issue dealing with cortisol management is really messed up, that also impacts your sugar response as well. So you end up having to eat more because you're stressed. Or if you're not sleeping well, you're going to end up eating more, right?
or reaching out to things that's going to be comforting you. Matter of fact, it's causing you more issues. So three things that I would recommend and two. Protein, muscle, and managing stress. That's really good. What's your general recommendation for protein? So generally, it's around 0.8 to 1 gram of protein per body weight.
Ideal body weight or total body weight? Ideal body weight. Okay, got it. Yeah, that makes sense. Ideal body weight. And it's hard for people, right? If they have never done a proper protein intake, to tell them, hey, you need to eat around 30, 40 grams of protein. protein, that's very overwhelming. So even then, you need to really walk that client into increasing the protein intake slowly. And that's a very, very important part. Everybody is different.
in the walks of life of wellness. Including eating protein. You either very slowly… And you may not be able to eat that much because you may have never eaten that much. To begin with, you may have lack of enzyme production because of mold toxicity or… lack of acid production, which could also impact the level of the protein might be eating. Maybe there's dysbiosis going on, which can cause more bloating issues when you're eating.
Slowly is not a race. It's a marathon. Slowly changing the shifting of the body and the body starts to appreciate that and you have to get to that level. Well said. Hey, before I ask you the last question, share with my audience your website and your social media, wherever you want them to find you. Yeah, absolutely. So you can find me on Instagram. It's john.pharmd.
My website is kimwellness.co. And I'll be actually launching a mold detox course very soon for clients. I know there's so many clients that are living overseas, are impacting by mold and may not be able to get the right resources. I'm actually providing this education and course so this way you could be your own best doctor to really see how mold is impacting your life and to walk you through to find that overall freedom from mold.
So important. Will that be on your website as well? It'll be on the website. It'll be launching and then I'll give you a link for your audience as well. That's great. We'll put that down below the podcast and the YouTube. Last question is, you mentioned earlier the gratitude part. I call it vitamin G. It's such a powerful supplement and vitamin. And I always ask my guests as we land the plane together. And my audience loves, and sometimes I'll do solo videos.
And I don't do the vitamin G thing because it's a solo interview. And then I see comments on my YouTube saying, I miss it when you don't ask the vitamin G question. But I'm going to ask it now. So what do you have vitamin G for today? What are you grateful for today, John?
I'm grateful for everything, including to be here with you. And another thing is to living under God's grace every single day. Amen. Amen to that. Well, I've got vitamin G for you as well. Thank you for making the trip to Miami from New Jersey.
I learned a lot from you and your Instagram channel, and I learned a lot from you today. We're going to put all your resources down below, and we'll do a round two next year. I hope this is valuable to my audience. I know it was. It was so important. Now you understand that it's not about cholesterol. There's way more moving parts. It's about...
Stress. And adapting to stress is the key. So thank you for helping us understand that. And thank you for coming to Miami, my friend. Thank you. Appreciate it. It was an honor. I hope you loved that conversation with Dr. John Kim, and I hope it gave you some hope and inspiration and practical steps to heal your body.
