Chapter one kicks off with a nostalgic trip down the memory lane of Michigan. A place we hold close to our hearts, often overlooked by foreign exchange students for the glitz and glamor of New York or California. We can't help but gush about the unmatched beauty Michigan boasts during the summer and fall seasons while comparing the pride and competitiveness of Southern California. Oh! and let's not forget to mention our unforgettable trip to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where we visited the Bush family's mansion and experienced the uniqueness of the only state with two parts.

Appreciating Michigan and Southern California

Speaker 1

Thank you for joining us again here at the Kings of the Road podcast . We have had some fun releasing episodes and hearing your feedback . So again , if you listen to this , tell a friend , tell a friend . Let them know that they can , too , be a part of our journey together .

We want to spread the word because we would love to one day have some other people go out on the road and do something like this Just jump in a motorhome , do an adventure , whatever it is , and Andrew and I are here to partner with you , to support you , to help you .

So the more people that listen to this and can just get word about it , man , we would love to be a part of that with you . So here we are on the Kings of the Road . Andrew , how are you today ?

Speaker 2

I'm doing great Scott .

Speaker 1

Good , we're trying to make our sound sound better . So Andrew has a child blanket behind him now and , very wonderful , it's beautiful .

Speaker 2

It is . It's like roses with light . Oh light , green and white as pinks .

Speaker 1

You look , it looks great , and so we're trying . We're , hey , listener . We're trying to make this experience all the more glorious for you . So every little , every little percent , that's better . We can try to do so . So here we are .

Speaker 2

I'm trying to ratchet up the silky effects on my voice .

Speaker 1

Yes , so there is a silky button that we're going to put on later .

Speaker 2

It makes the silkyness just like .

Speaker 1

Al .

Speaker 2

Green style ? I think there's some . Let me try some things . Hey listener , this is Andrew Gehr , coming to you from KXWB Jazz Radio . I hope you've enjoyed our time together .

Speaker 1

What do you think ? What do you think ? I love it . I think that's how you should do it the whole time .

Speaker 2

All right , that's where we should be the whole time . We'll read you the story like this and hopefully you don't fall asleep and oh , there you go , that's a new purpose .

Speaker 1

You never want people to go you know , my favorite part about your podcast is oh , I listen to it and then I fall asleep .

Speaker 2

I have the greatest sleep Every time I turn your podcast on .

Speaker 1

Thanks , andrew . A couple minutes , like a baby , I just fall asleep . And then I dream about being in the lazy days , rocked on that wonderful , glorious bed and just the fan coming on you . It doesn't get much better than that . Okay , where are we in the world ?

Speaker 2

We are in Michigan . Hey-oh . So Michigan , unanimously between Scott and I , ranked in the top three . So there's a lot of three state .

Speaker 1

There's a lot of sentimentality , of course , because Michigan has been where I've gone most of my life , for our family cottage , which is where we're going to get to , but there's a lot of connections we have to the state . It's also in the summer and in this time , at the fall , it's really beautiful . It's a really beautiful state .

Speaker 2

Yeah , I know You're speechless . I'm flabbergasted Because we talk about this in when we did our launch event . We'll have a detour about top three , bottom three states and we talk about Michigan a little bit . But from Southern California and knowing Scott in high school , he would talk Michigan up like it was this heaven on earth .

I know when you're from Southern California and you hear somebody talking about Michigan , you're like give me a break . Like Michigan , it snows there and there's no mountains . What's the point ? Right , like it just seems . Do you think ?

Speaker 1

as Southern California , Is there any more like what's the right word I'm looking for ? Like prideful about their area , or like we are pretty convinced that , like as far as weather and things to do and everything is really hard to beat Southern California ?

I'm trying to think of a state that if I was talking about in high school , the high schools have been like oh oh yeah , Okay , Washington , Florida .

Speaker 2

Tennessee .

Speaker 1

New York . I mean , none of them would have been like we're better than them for this reason , Right .

Speaker 2

No , because Southern , because they'd be wrong . Like Southern , california is the best for us for a lot of reasons , granted , it's not great . For other reasons .

Speaker 1

There's other things for sure , but I mean , that's why I'm just sitting here thinking like is there any state that I could have pushed , when I was 17 , around the lunch bench outside of table number five ?

Speaker 2

right there that you guys would have been like oh yeah , that that I agree .

Speaker 1

Alabama , Arkansas , pick your state , it loses .

Speaker 2

It does . I think there's things about certain places that are better . So that's the thing about Michigan . When Michigan is great , wow , yeah , it is great , it is great . But then there's a wind drop , and shockingly , because you do get , okay .

So here's one like Hawaii , right , people would undeniable paradise , right , right , and you know , do you want to live there or not ? I think that's debatable . I've heard different things . Right , certainly an incredible place to visit , sure , but Michigan I didn't even consider it being one of the greatest places in this country , and it fully is . It is .

It's great . At least not in the winter . No , it was not in the winter . Yeah , I haven't been there in the winter .

Speaker 1

But here's another thing that I'm thinking too . So when we were in Michigan this summer my family , we had a party for my parents , some family there , and we told them we were getting some foreign exchange students . And the woman's like , oh , they're going to like being at your house because you're in California .

When we had foreign exchange students in our little town in Michigan , they always wanted to be in New York or California . They didn't want . No one's like , yeah , I came from the Ukraine to Michigan . Oh , wow , it's not on their list . And so I was like , oh , I hadn't thought about that . So that's the other thing .

Right , you're sitting around a table in Arkansas and someone's like , hey , my family has his house in Southern California that you don't . Okay , I'll go with you . Yeah , where do we leave ? Where do we go ? So , okay . So here we are , top top top , top , top , top .

Speaker 2

Yeah Well , and I think about that too Like we'll go to the beach . Oh , I don't know . We always like , for Christmas break , we always try to go to the beach one of the days when the kids are off and I'm off and we're like okay , it's December 27th , let's go hang out at the beach .

And it's always I don't know what it is , but there's always a very beautiful day right around Christmas here in Southern California , where it's 70 something degrees and we go down to the beach and it is so beautiful , it is and warm , and you're like this is incredible .

And then you go in the summer and you're like I have to remind myself that people plan vacations to Southern California , like that's where they go , exactly .

Speaker 1

So no , I agree it's hard to beat , but yeah , yeah , coming back to Michigan , I'm not going to pitch . There was no state that I think you all would have been like , oh , let's go , come on . Yeah , I mean , I think maybe Hawaii You're right , hawaii , maybe that's Alaska . This is so like foreign and cool .

Speaker 2

Yeah , that's true , but as a place to live every day , like , yeah , hard to beat , it's it's hard to beat , but Michigan and they have done their darndest I feel like to push Michigan with their pure Michigan campaign , where they have Buzz Lightyear , you know , talking it up . Tim Allen was . Is he a native of Michigander ? He ?

Speaker 1

is . You saw him once , I did , I met , okay , so he's in . Michigan , Inside . Yeah , so we're out at my family cottage and we are . We rented a boat . I love boats and do those boats . But we rented a boat for like a couple of days in this slip . We pulled into the slip Big boat .

It's this little private marina we're into this boat from , so it's only probably 10 or 15 slips . This big boat starts pulling in and the driver kind of knows what he's doing , but it's also a big boat and I'd be like oof , I mean 30 feet maybe , a nice size boat , and he's trying to pull into the slip and so we're helping him .

And then so my dad and I are both there I'm probably 17 . We're helping him and pulling and pushing and trying to get him into the the right place . And then we tie him off and my dad is kind of like joking , with the wife just making the little comments .

I go , oh husband , can't drive boats , and I just saying these like little things and we're tying it off and we're helping this guy and we get it all done . And then we get back to the car and we go wait a second , was that Tim ?

Allen oh my gosh , so you didn't notice at the moment , and then we creepily drive by slow as he's like walking down , it was , it was . But in the moment we were just like what , what ? Just helping , just doing that , the things of how to do that . It was so funny , I don't know .

And we all knew that he lives not far from that area , so like yeah , it wasn't a surprise . But we were both like oh , oh , that was . And then , yeah , then we drove by slow . He has had his sunglasses on , you know , so we weren't recognizing him . But it was just such a funny , a funny moment .

My dad's like oh , I was making fun of Tim Allen to his wife how do you know ?

Speaker 2

Well , and that's a funny thing , like when you encounter celebrities , you you're not expecting it , especially in a place like northern Michigan , no , and so , yeah , it's kind of after the fact , but what's funny ? Another thing , to compare California with Michigan . Anywhere I go outside of California I'm like , oh , I'm from the LA area , oh , do you ?

No , I know I've , I've rarely , but you got to understand . The population of California is like the same as the entire country of Australia . Right , there's like 30 million people in California .

Speaker 1

Yeah , a lot of them are in LA . Before we left for Michigan this last summer , I told my kids and like , look out over to from the church where we are , you can see most of the LA basin .

And I said you are currently looking at more people in the whole state of Michigan because I think there's 14 million people in LA County and there's nine million people in the state of Michigan .

Speaker 2

Oh my gosh , yeah , but yeah it's , it's . It's funny . I very rarely have seen celebrities , but then my family moved out to Nashville or south of Nashville not that long ago . They're always running into people . Oh , we saw . I mean , they're all country music stars .

Speaker 1

Exactly , yeah , yeah , exactly .

Speaker 2

Yeah , but it is .

Speaker 1

We see celebrities when we do this .

Speaker 2

Boo-yah , oh , is that Scott Hawkins from Kingsley Road podcast ? Oh my gosh , oh hello .

Speaker 1

Well , hello , I'm nervous , okay .

Speaker 2

And this is Andrew Gaird , coming at you with the silkiest voice in all of Southern California . Because I have a flowery comforter draped behind my chair .

Speaker 1

We are . We're going up in the podcast world . We sure are . Did you buy that ?

Speaker 2

So maybe we should go . Did I buy one on Amazon ?

Speaker 1

Oh , this blank I was just thinking do you get that Podcast blank ? Gets poop , poop .

Speaker 2

Yes , it's way more expensive because it's specifically a podcast blanket .

Speaker 1

Isn't this just a comforter ?

Speaker 2

I can get that at Target All right day 14 . It is October 11th 2004 . Today we woke up . What Today ? Oh , you're right , we are recording on October 11th and we're talking about October 11th . It's my sister's birthday . Happy birthday , Andrea Hawkins shout out to you .

Speaker 1

Yeah , okay , that's why I jumped , because I was like I just tested in there's happy birthday and then you said wow , wow , what a day .

Speaker 2

Look at that .

Speaker 1

What a day that 1011 , All right . Good to happen today for us .

Speaker 2

Yes today we woke up real early . Well , not so much . It could have been close to noon , but can you blame us ? We drove across another time zone and so we are now on the eastern time zone and we're 22 years old , so we can sleep in . Yeah , so I cannot tell you . The last time I slept until close to noon .

Speaker 1

In a Walmart parking lot too right .

Speaker 2

So now people like deep .

Speaker 1

They might have a third shopping trip and we're still snoring long .

Speaker 2

Can you imagine ? I don't even think I've slept till nine in at least , and I don't know as long as my children have been alive ?

Speaker 1

Yeah , exactly . So like hey hey , you want to give me that thing that I could totally get for myself . But I'm not gonna get for myself , so I'm gonna wait you up so you can get it for me . Love you too .

Speaker 2

Do we need to talk about this some more ? Scott , are you okay ?

Speaker 1

No , actually I think I just think about . That is one one of the other episodes we were editing

Geography and Michigan Mansions

.

Speaker 2

Yes , okay , it was a nice short drive today to Grand Rapids , michigan . We were headed to the bushes house in Grand Rapids , who own the cottage next to the Hawkins's cottage in Northport Michigan . That's pretty cool , right ? I mean , so your family , his own this cottage up in Northport Michigan ?

I wish you could see us listener , because you can very easily show somebody where North Portage , yeah , we're got . We're actually gonna do an exercise here , I think so everybody who's listening . Yes , in front of you . Okay , hold up your left hand , thank you , and look at your left hand as you're holding it in front of you .

Now Stick your pinky out just ever so slightly . Yes , northport Michigan . So the gap between your pinky and your ring finger , that is the , the Grand Traverse Bay . How ?

Speaker 1

am I doing so far ? Scott , you're nailing it . I'm so proud of you right now .

Speaker 2

Yeah , scott explained this to us so many times , we just never cared . But it's in my brain now , so , okay , you've got that . You've got that gulf between your pinky and your ring finger . Yep , northport , so Traverse City , not Traverse City , but Traverse City . Very , gotta get the wrong emphasis on the right side of the world Cherry capital grant .

Traverse City is , or yeah , we're Traverse City is a Cherry capital of the world .

Speaker 1

Airport is in Traverse City .

Speaker 2

Man , I love cherries . I know Also , isn't there a film festival ? There is the .

Speaker 1

Traverse City film . I mean just we're living it up right now .

Speaker 2

Look at me . You are brought to you by the state of Michigan . Andrew is actually the new sponsor . The Kings of the Road podcast is now a sponsor of the state of Michigan . We're paying them . This isn't . This is like a John Chris comm backwards bad business move right here . We're actually trying to get sponsors , but instead we're sponsoring okay .

So Northport , where the Hawkins and the Bush's Cottages is right on the inside of your pinky , almost the tip , by by your fingernail , yep . Just inside the bay , by your fingernail , yep . So now you have a picture now Grand Rapids . Grand Rapids is right in the middle of your hand .

Speaker 1

Yeah , it's more left-like middle , you know . So they're right right below that gap . You made about two hours . Draw two hours down on your hand , hmm , For me .

Speaker 2

That's about , yeah , that's about that freckle ? Right , yeah , so I hope you've enjoyed the Geography lesson . There's also the Upper Peninsula of Michigan , so Michigan is the only state that has two parts . So that's true , because Hawaii's good .

Speaker 1

Well , there has to be something about this unique about . That's a good point . Do you think anybody has a back-of-the-hand tattoo with the map of Michigan Tattooed on their hand ? There has to be someone in this world that has that . That would be funny , don't you think like there's ?

There's somebody who's like yeah , yeah , a little simple , simple Roads and highways , and , oh , look , there's Flint , oh , there's Detroit , oh , oh , that would be fantastic .

Speaker 2

It'd be even better if they were Italian and they also had .

Speaker 1

Italy tattooed on their leg . Oh .

Speaker 2

So you like .

Speaker 1

Italy and Michigan ? Huh , no , it's never been there what I Mean . But how do you resist , right ? How do you resist left hand and boot tattoo ? You don't resist .

Speaker 2

Oh , we gotta we gotta look that up we gotta look that out , somebody's somebody's gotta have that .

Speaker 1

Oh , if you listen , or if you have that , please email us . What's our email ? Is the Kings of the Road podcast at gmailcom ? I Think that's it Kings of the Road podcast at gmailcom . If you know of a person that has this , please Email us or go our Facebook page and do it , man .

Speaker 2

If only there is a way to search for people .

Speaker 1

Let's resist , let's resist .

Speaker 2

Alright , okay , okay , let's see . So we are in Grand Rapids , you know exactly where we are , you know where Northport is .

So , anyhow , we go to the bushes house and , yeah , they , they have the cottage right next to the Hawkins , which is cool because presumably they met there and now they're family friends and we're able to go visit with them and Stay with them in Grand Rapids .

So we pull up to this house and it's a freaking mansion Three car garage , huge lot , probably over an acre , maybe two and a swamp just beyond their backyard . To give you an idea of the magnitude , the basement had its own kitchen , living room , two bedrooms and a storage room .

Speaker 1

So I think it's a good time to introduce our new sponsor , because one of the things that we've realized is that when you travel the country you're trying to figure out and like place okay , what would it be like to live here ? So we got reached out by a new company Startup right , I think they're a startup .

Yeah , startup company that's right , you're in the whole tech world with Bluebeam and they have this new product and it's called what's the name of the company Find Home , find Home , find Home . And they have this new product and there's two levels .

There's the basic level , which you get just a pair of goggles , and then there's a next level which you get goggles and a full body suit . So you put on the goggles or the goggles and full body suit .

Speaker 2

Yeah , so think VR headset . If you've ever done one of those virtual reality headsets where you're immersed in a space , right , so go ahead VR goggles , vr goggles and then the full body suit .

Find Home: Exploring House Options With Virtual Reality

Speaker 1

So you're wondering oh , okay , man , house prices are a lot in Southern California and I you know gas prices are a lot traffic . Maybe I should go somewhere else . Well , find home , you buy the kit , you put it on , you type in where you wanna go and then you type in , like you know , the months that you're gonna be there .

So you say , okay , michigan , july . Oh , you look around , there's green everywhere .

Speaker 2

Yeah . So you start off with like okay , right now , like I'm considering maybe we should leave Southern California , let's cash out , like so many people did , right , Like I've got a house that's a thousand square feet and I could sell it for a million bucks . If we move to Michigan , what could I get ?

So you type in okay , I live in Southern California , a thousand square feet , a million bucks If I traded my house in and moved to Michigan , what am I doing ? And so the VR headset then generates a typical house for those parameters .

Speaker 1

Like the Bush's house , you pull up here . This is amazing .

Speaker 2

You're like oh my gosh , I can . I've got a basement with two bedrooms and a kitchen . I've got a huge lot . I remember they had a trampoline on this beautiful lawn and like a creek . I said swamp , but that doesn't paint a great picture . But anyways just like a lot of land . I remember it being like brick huge front yard beautiful neighborhood .

Speaker 1

You're exploring this house with your VR goggles and you're thinking this is great . And you open the door and it's green outside and there's water and it's a little muddy because your suit is like it's a little it's Michigan , so it's a little muddy .

Speaker 2

That's right . So spend the money up for the suit because you want to experience it . You're like , wow , it's a little bit muggy , but it feels a little bit like a friendly hug .

Speaker 1

It's summer , yeah , yeah , so you're ready . You're like ready , like let's put the house .

Speaker 2

Call the realtor Yep , we're going .

Speaker 1

But wisdom would say , it's not always June or July in Michigan . So then you say okay , let's expand , let's type in January Grand Rapids enter .

Speaker 2

Yes , so I tried this right . Yeah , so we're early adopters .

Speaker 1

They gave us like a beta version of the suit . They gave us a free one , so it's not fully operational yet .

Speaker 2

But I typed in the same thing , grand Rapids , michigan , and I said , okay , January , right . And the screen came up and it said walk to your kitchen . So I'm like , okay , I'm going to walk to the kitchen . It says open freezer . So okay , yeah , open freezer . They say now pull out your pants and fill it with all the frozen food you have .

Speaker 1

And then get your kids ready to go to school .

Speaker 2

Yes , yes . Then pull the frozen food out of your pants , put on every jacket you own , every jacket you own .

Speaker 1

Then line up all your kids , have them all get ready , and then the VR dodgles go . Look to child one . They have to pee .

Speaker 2

Right and demo .

Speaker 1

Yeah , make sure you're very sweaty at this point , yes , oh well , yeah , the suit has already made you sweaty . So you think oh okay , so maybe it's not all Humpty Dory . So you're like well , let's do , let's do July . I live in Alabama for six years . July , alabama Right .

Speaker 2

The screen says so you tried it for Alabama , right ? So the screen says go .

Speaker 1

go into your bathroom , turn on the shower . Full heat , full hot water , close no vents going , no windows open door closed , spend your whole day in the shower and the amazing part the VR dodgles . This was really next level .

I was very impressed with this as I looked under the door , scurrying outside to get away from me the largest cockroach that you can imagine Just poof taking off , and that would happen like I don't know every 15 or so minutes , as I'm sitting in the shower and I'm thinking , oh , and it says May through September , it's the same .

So , I really think this company's onto something .

Speaker 2

Yeah , so we did one more to . Oh , I didn't know which one's the last one you did . Well , I didn't tell you . I did this one just this morning because I had to wait for this extra thing to show up . So I typed in Florida and it said okay , give us three to five business days . And I'm like that's odd .

So I get a box in the mail and it says okay , lock yourself in the smallest room in your house . Again it says turn on your shower full heat . Full heat no choice . Okay , yeah . So then I'm in there , I'm ultra sweaty , it's hard to breathe , and it says now open the box . And I open the box and there's a plastic bucket in the box .

So I open that up and as soon as I do , about about 60,000 mosquitoes fly over the bucket and just consume my body .

Speaker 1

I thought I was not sure I was in the bucket , but I was also ready for it . It's just being an alligator . Open bucket , open box , bam .

Speaker 2

Yeah , put your foot in this bear trap and step down firmly . Yeah , you should now be dead .

Speaker 1

Yeah , and the mosquitoes . And now the mosquitoes don't even have to go through your flesh to get to them , they can just drink it right there . Yeah , oh my goodness , oh goodness .

Speaker 2

So you know don't what's really powerful about find home . And you can find them at johnchriscom , of course . Oddly , there's other goods , they're affiliated . Yes , you can get their suit in their goggles now . You can check out pricing there . But hey , if you're considering moving , it's worth it .

Before you invest the big money and you make the leap to move , you definitely wanna try find home . To make sure that you are finding the right home for yourself and not making mistakes .

Speaker 1

This is so yeah , revolutionary , joe Johnchris . It is really revolutionary , because then you can find out what it's like to live in these places before you cash out , because once you leave , you're not coming back .

Speaker 2

Oh , that's the thing . Yeah , people don't realize If you leave California you know what we should do .

Speaker 1

We haven't done this yet . We'll report back to you guys , though , what happens when you put it in Southern California . You know , like if we were moving from Michigan to California , probably like small one bedroom studio .

Speaker 2

You're like something must be wrong because it's just showing yeah , it's just showing me a space of sidewalk in a cardboard box for a tent ?

Speaker 1

Why is there just four walls in the bathroom ? Huh , that's . I just went from that mansion to oh , okay , okay , I see , I see now why . Why can't I come back ? Yeah , so , but the Bush's house was amazing and it is a beautiful part of the thing about being from our place is that no one has houses like that . No one , no , no , no one .

Speaker 2

And so you yeah , I don't think I've ever seen a house like this before . It was incredible , yeah .

Speaker 1

I last year I took my youth pastor to Alabama and we were mostly in the north side of town doing work and fixing things and helping people . And then we had one night at a party at someone's house on the south side of town where and we're driving in and it's just houses like this , right , boom , beautiful , big places , and he's like how much are these ?

And I'm like what do you think ? He's like I don't know , four or $5 million , fair , fair .

Speaker 2

Yeah , yeah , I don't know , it was in Redondo .

Speaker 1

Beach what ? Yeah , I know , dude , it's tough to wrap your bread . He had never been outside really so in . California like that . So it was really a fun , a fun moment to experience with him .

Speaker 2

Yeah , that's funny . Yeah , it's funny , yeah it is . It's fascinating to me this stuff , real estate and what you get for the price of other places , but there's trade-offs .

Speaker 1

There's trade-offs , but find home will help you get the right choice .

Speaker 2

So that's right .

Speaker 1

That was really it . Never before has this technology existed .

Speaker 2

It is really something . It is really something .

Speaker 1

Yeah , this is a . I think it's find home . So yeah , johntriscom , okay , check them out , keep going .

Speaker 2

All right . So as if this house wasn't amazing enough , let's continue on here . For dinner , mrs Bush prepared an amazing dinner of steak , fresh applesauce , sweet potatoes , garlic bread , broccoli , homemade cornbread and freshly baked pumpkin pie for dessert .

Speaker 1

Are you kidding me ?

Speaker 2

Like come on .

Speaker 1

That's not at findhomecom . They don't have that kind of service .

Speaker 2

I want to just I just want to make that my home . I know , you know , I just want to live there .

Speaker 1

Yeah , suggestions at findhomecom I want to live with the Bush family and make them have that delicious . That was such a kind . Maybe that's just what they call dinner normally , but for us it was really nice to have like a home-cooked meal after a lot of sandwiches on the road and yeah , yeah , that was nice .

Speaker 2

I think that was that was easily , easily one of the best meals we had on the road .

Speaker 1

Oh , I saw her this summer too and I said I still think about the applesauce that you made us . I told her we were doing this and then , and so I'll have to send her the link so they can listen .

Speaker 2

That reminds me so our sponsor , tinyapplescom . I have made applesauce out of tinyapples . The applesauce , strangely enough , is the same size as other applesauce .

Speaker 1

You're only allowed to eat like two bites .

Speaker 2

That was it . Yeah , you just have to use a small spoon , you just have to use a tiny spoon . Okay , oh gosh , all right . So that evening we went to a gun life .

Speaker 1

We're really collecting the advertisers , though I didn't think this was successful when we started .

Speaker 2

Yeah , I was doing some research and it's like you know , in order to get the attention of sponsors , you usually need , you know , a couple thousand listeners . The amount of sponsors we have with our , you know one to four listeners weekly , I mean amazing , it is unprecedented . So , thank you .

One to four listeners , Thank you , but you guys , you guys have purchasing power , those right demographic .

Speaker 1

We did tell them females is the right time for tiny apples that time .

Speaker 2

It turns out to be about the right demographic . So , thank you , I see you , we appreciate you . So young life we went to a young life event . So Corey , the eldest daughter , is the main cheese in that area , so it was cool to check out the ministry they do .

Now , I personally don't have a lot of experience with young life , though I am definitely aware of it . Right Do you ? Are you more familiar ?

Speaker 1

Yeah , so young life exists , kind of it's .

They would call themselves a paratrooper organization , where they have no official like church body or a church home that they're a part of , but they exist to get on the school campuses , get kids to some kind of youth group and usually it's like high fun , high energy , high activity , and when they're at their best they're trying to filter those kids into local

churches and into local church youth groups . So , like , really be that that place where kids are able to have fun and experience Jesus and get to know each other and then say , oh hey , you know , you should be into this church .

When they're at their worst it kind of becomes the like it right , it doesn't have the structure and form to function as a whole church and but it becomes some people's whole church . Does that make sense ?

So , yeah , I think it's a wonderful thing to to have a group that is really intentional about pursuing those people but at the same time , at the same time , it needs to maintain its identity . I go , hey , go there , because we all really need to be plugged into a church . This is what it comes into .

Like you need multiple generations around you , you need a place , you need people who are praying for you , considering you , thinking about you , and I think that's the huge benefit of being a part of a church is that it becomes bigger than you . So , yeah , it's a great organization .

Church and Adventure in Michigan

She's awesome . The report was great . It was really fun . I don't remember if it was at someone's house or it was a coffee shop or it was some . It was a . Really again , it was high energy , a lot of fun . We played some like silly games , yeah so , yeah , no , that is cool .

Speaker 2

I do agree with what you say , but what a great need that they meet , if they can get more people plugged into churches . I mean , our story , and then my story personally , has to do with why a church body is so important .

So our youth group I started hanging out with this group of friends that included you , scott , and you guys all went to a youth group , so I started there and then , because of that youth group , music was a part of our life and I started playing in the band , and so that's what got my family to come .

They're like , well , we don't know about church , we've never been , but our son is playing on Sunday morning , so we'll go watch him . And then they heard the word and God did this thing , heard the good news , and that's what ultimately got them saved .

Speaker 1

And then here we are on this trip because of the support of that church body , and so yeah , and so there's people in church that are older and have more liquid income that they can support , and there's younger people .

Speaker 2

Della bills y'all . Della dala bills y'all .

Speaker 1

Let's be real , we need it all . So yeah , exactly , and so I think it's a beautiful thing to have multi-generational church there and , at the same time , have groups that are really just pursuing the youth to get them in .

Speaker 2

So yeah , I'm like immediately having remorse for saying Della , della , bills y'all as if I'm minimizing .

Speaker 1

No , but I think we need it all . I mean , we need the , we need resources and we need people . Like last night at church , we had an awesome pumpkin carving night and it was so much fun and all the kids around and just having a great time . So I , you know , I love the local church .

It's my favorite thing to be a part of and love having connections like this . So and so much of this trip is a testimony to that Is a testimony to the fact that we're connected to people through the body of Christ that we never would have imagined . And back to like where we started today's podcast .

If you want to go on adventure , you have the support of a church like do it and we can plug you in . It is a powerful thing , it's huge , and we can plug you into things and help you get to know people and encourage you , and we're here . So , yeah , that's a real heart , for what we're doing is just to see people do something fun go on adventure .

Speaker 2

Go and maybe where you're at too in your life is supporting somebody else who wants to go and have an adventure . Exactly , I mean totally . That is the multi-general part of it too .

Speaker 1

There were people who wrote checks to say , hey , you guys go and do this . I can't like . I mean right now we wouldn't be able to go no .

Speaker 2

Which is funny .

Speaker 1

Yeah , yeah , go ahead . Well , people are people who are doing this and posing . So much about the road trip . I've gotten a lot of people be like , oh so , so you're back . I didn't realize you were back from the road trip . I'm like , oh well , that was years ago .

Speaker 2

Yeah , somebody came up to me recently . I was like so how does this work ? Like you're going to leave Mary and the girls for like three months . I'm like no , no , no , no , of course not . I did this 20 years ago .

Speaker 1

My favorite . My other favorite one was someone's like . These pictures have been posted of you . You look good Like no wrinkles , no gray hair , lots of hair on your head . I'm like , yeah , that was 22-year-old me . They're like , oh , that , that that tracks Well . Yeah , does the bald and chubby gray guy in front of me not look like them ?

Speaker 2

Yeah , thanks for the feedback . So I don't , I don't look the same as 22-year-old Scott Interesting , interesting . So afterwards yeah so we went to this young life group and then afterwards we headed out to the bar for some buffalo wings , football and beer Good way to end a day .

Speaker 1

That was a great day . That was a great day , great way to end a day , actually , yeah , pure Michigan , pure Michigan .

Speaker 2

Pure Michigan . Join us in Michigan for buffalo wings , apple sauce , pretty decent weather , so long as you go during the right time of year , and Tim Allen , boat tying classes . Boat tying classes While you eat cherries . I have one thing to . I know I have a friend who's a listener . Yeah , hi , david Rekker , from Canada .

You know who you are because I just said your first and last name Social Security number four , nine , three . He went to yeah , he went to Michigan a couple of years ago with his family and we talked about that and he was so impressed with how nice Michigan was as well we talked about it is a hidden gem of North America .

Speaker 1

Michigan . If you're listening , send a check . Yeah , we're really . We're living you up . Unlike like that could take away from our lawsuit that we got from South Dakota . That could really help fund that lawyer fees that were being hit for our . What's the word that they used ? A slander ? I think it was the word that Deformation .

Yeah , those are the front documents .

Speaker 2

We didn't realize it would escalate that much .

Speaker 1

No , we didn't realize that South Dakota like to bond together so quickly .

Speaker 2

We didn't think they were really capable of anything positive , so I shouldn't say that , but we only have 13 people . It's not very hard to to router jokes , turns out when four of them are lawyers , though didn't know that , not helpful .

Speaker 1

Gosh Avery's gonna be way outcast in Sioux Falls when she shows up . They better not realize who her father is . Don't convert into the road podcast . It's a dead and trouble . So is that the end of the day ? That's the end of the day , a great day . It's hard to express how important . Tomorrow is the next episode , friends .

So if you are listening to this , then you , you live in eager anticipation of what is to come .

Speaker 2

That's right , it is the most one of maybe it's glorious , I'll say it it is the most monumentous event of the trip .

Speaker 1

Oh , for sure , up until well , up until this point , it could be debated that . But it's an important day . So , okay , everybody . Jackkriscom has all of your leather good needs , and it has , it's John . Johnkriscom has all of your leather good needs .
