Episode description

You are not your thoughts.

Transcript

Today, focus more on what you can control and less on what you can't control. Salespeople love control. We try to make sales happen in a predictable way on our timeline, but sales and life is uncertain. There's very little that is in your full control. You don't control how people respond to your message. You don't control when or if people buy. Convincing people to do what you want them to do is a recipe for being disappointed and unhappy all the time. So what's the way out? Detach.

How, practice observing your thoughts without judgment. For example, here's a thought I observed, while I was riding my bike the other day. Oh, that's interesting. Josh is worried again about getting hit by a car while he's riding his bike. When you observe your thoughts, you're not lost in your thoughts. You'll notice that thoughts are like waves. They come and go all the time. When you notice them, they have a short shelf life, a new thought just pops into your head.

You'll notice that you don't control your thoughts, but you do control your relationship with them. How do you respond to them. Let it go right now. There's nothing to fix right now. There's no problem to fix right now. Resist nothing. It's madness to resist what is. Being able to regulate your thinking is a superpower. As Alan Watts said, muddy water is best cleaned by leaving it alone.
