Episode description

Warhammer über-nerd Matt has finally played a decent chunk of the upcoming third-person shooter Space Marine 2, and from what he's played it's far exceeded his expectations. Jesse has been sinking his time into another Warhammer 40K game, Speed Freeks , and, well... you'll just have to listen to this week's IGN UK Podcast to find out what he thinks. He also does way too much self-promotion, but thankfully keeps his potty mouth relatively clean for once. It's something you should know. Hello and welcome to the IGN UK podcast. I am Alex and this week I am joined by Matt Persler. Hello. How you doing? Yeah, I'm alright.

Good. And I'm also joined by Jesse Gones. There's a lot of energy with you saying my name then Matt. I feel like this is my favorite. I burn brightly, but I burn for a very short period of time. So I'm spent now. Very, very, very calm podcast. Well, you know what I'm doing. Absolutely fantastic. I'm Alex. Are you excited about us all going on a big old Germany trip in a couple of weeks? You know what? I am. I can't wait to sit down with my pals and have some lovely pork together as we always do.

Before you're going to go, I thought you were a Donna boy, Jesse. Well, you know, Donna boy. That's like a real cast. I'll have it. I'll have it. I'll have it like maybe once when we're in Germany, but I just I think I get tired because this I'm not naming names, but there's definitely some American colleagues who like to have it every day. And they say donor and I'm like, that's not on. Like broaden your horizons a little bit. You know, have some different food.

So I don't think I've ever had that in Germany. Well, it's very famous, but so famous that there are now places in London called German Donna. That is true. I like a schnitzel. Do you? Yeah. What's your go to? Ideally not going to a place that does the German food. You had a lot of pizza last. And quite honestly, by day three, I'm absolutely begging for a salad. I know that that makes me sound very boring, but once you've had like 16 schnitzels into pork knuckles, you've really had enough of it.

The thing is like the sort of schnitzel you can get there in Germany. The size is just it doesn't make sense. It's the entire dinner plate. Yeah, it's like the death star of pork has arrived on your plate. It's ginormous. Which is great for one dinner and then when you're on your third dish of it. And sometimes they give you two of those as well, which is insane. Clearly do not have a thought. With the egg source. The egg source is great, but it's like a whole jug of egg source.

Yeah. Oh, I do think that absolutely I can't remember your wording now, but absolutely begging for a salad is a good name for a podcast. Anyway, we're not here to talk about food. We're here to talk about video games and stuff like that. No way. I've been on vacation for two weeks. So the only game I've played is mind games. It's the same game I've been playing for the last three months. It's Fortnite. And you know what? Fortnite is brilliant.

But how are you playing Fortnite while you're on holiday? Alex. Nintendo Switch, Jesse. Well, I just I don't know. I don't know many people who play Fortnite on the Switch. I was just wondering how it goes. Are you hook it up to the hotel Wi-Fi and just owning people? So you and your son just get doing duos and absolutely smattering the competition.

It's really hard to play on Switch, especially like maybe if I'd have taken a pro controller, I would have been better, but on the side joy cons, it's really hard. Yeah. And the screen is not detailed enough to sort of pick out her shots. And it's a bit janky, but still it was fun. He basically had some leveling up to do to get bits in the game. So I was helping him do that.

No, OK. I don't think your your child probably doesn't share the same criticisms you have of playing on the Switch with the. Oh, he absolutely does. It's gone from PS5 to Switch. He notices the low times, the resolution, frame rate, everything. And also what I didn't realize is obviously it carries your character across, but it doesn't carry a V-box across.

So the V-box that you have on Switch are different from the V-bucks you have on PlayStation. And so we gave him some V-bucks so he could get the skins that he wanted and this and that. But you have to get to a point where you don't want to leave too many on the Switch because they're basically redundant. Yeah. But as you teach him valuable finance lessons of how to balance his V-bucks, having like six different bank accounts, you transfer to avoid tax or whatever. Yeah, it's exactly like that.

And that's the only way that you can floss across a bridge dressed as Deadpool. Yeah, exactly. Well, he did get the Deadpool skin. And then he was like, please kind of watch Deadpool. And I was like, absolutely not. Of course not. Yeah, you don't want to do that.

He did get the cyber truck, which I was very disappointed with, but hey, you can't really teach him nine-year-old how bad he on Muskeys A. I mean, to the point where people who are working on Fortnite are like, we do not appreciate the cyber truck being in the game. And if you see it, destroy it on site. I'm like, that's class. It's great that it looks amazing. And I look at it. It's that I've ever seen.

I think if I was like maybe ten years old, I'll have thought down there looks sick. But then I haven't seen one in person yet. I'm hoping I do at some point just to marvel at how ugly it would be because it does look hideous. Kidding the Batman Biel looks amazing. That's what kids should be looking for. That is true. I'm not here to talk about the cyber truck all fortnight. We're here to talk about the games you guys have been playing.

So, and I think first is again, I'm actually very interested in and it's Space Marine 2. Yeah, obviously I am well known around these parts has been the Warhammer 40K nut. The thing that I really like about Space Marine 2 though is I think this could be kind of like a bit of a big break for Warhammer in the kind of like video games sphere. And I think this is genuinely one where you don't have to know anything about Warhammer at all.

And you don't have to be a lot of Warhammer games are kind of a bit junk. There are little bit tend to be built on lower budgets or by kind of like studios that maybe don't have a huge amount of pedigree. This is made by Saber Interactive who make they made the World Wars of Games, which are not necessarily among kind of like the pinnacle of third person shooters or any other games.

But they are well built. But like these days Sabers like run by Tim Willett who's the guy that like made Quake basically. So, you know, there's like a real amount of pedigree to it. And it is kind of very much like a Gears of War game. It's a third person shooter that has lots and lots of gore. But it's got that World War Z tech in it that means you could have like thousands of enemies on screen at any one time.

And that kind of combination with the setting of Warhammer 40k creates like a very unique cadence to how it plays. So basically I've played the first mission of the campaign, which is reasonably long. You know, it kind of took me a couple of hours to get through it.

And for anybody that doesn't know what a space room is, is there a 10 foot tall like genetically engineered super soldier fighting through very, very gothic battlefields in Europe against the tyrannies, which are essentially a horde enemy. Imagine like thousands and thousands of xenomorphs from alien coming at you. And you have a sword in one hand and you have a big gun in the other. The smoothness that this game has that we've been able to switch from melee to shooting is ridiculous.

Whereas most games kind of like, you know, the melee just feels like it's a little bit of a tap that you know, you can call it duty. Yeah, call of duty is a shooter. But then the melee is kind of like is a bit of a tap that you do to get out of a tight situation. This is a game where you are clearly supposed to be swapping from one to the other with absolute frequency, smooth as butter. And the bulk of those tyrannies go down very, very quickly. They're essentially just meat for the grinder.

But among the hordes, like these, I'm literally talking hundreds of enemies coming towards you. You'll see the bigger ones and they have, they're the way you're supposed to put your focus on. Right. And they each one has kind of like a special kind of like, you know, some of them are gonna want some of them have arms that essentially made of swords and you have to engage them in close combat. Some are designed to aid the other tyrannies and they can buff them and make them better.

Some spray kind of like loads of goo that gets you stuck in place. And so a lot of the combat is about like identifying those bigger threats and essentially kicking your way and slicing your way through a sea of meat to get to those and then have like a big fight with those.

And then sort of like move on from there and then obviously in between that, there's the classic sort of, you know, you're trying to get from A to B to do an objective and you've just got this almost impossible odds between you. But they're not impossible because you are a 10 foot tall guy with a giant like, you know, the first kind of melee weapon you get is a chain sword, which is as it sounds. It's a long sword, but it's also a chain saw at the same time.

I wanted to know how far off is space marine to from something like, it was like Dynasty Warriors where you have the sort of like little gremlins. You can just absolutely smash out, but then you've got those specific targets because in my mind, I just feel like from I haven't watched all too much gameplay. So I'm very much looking forward to this game. I saw want to keep it fresh for when I play it.

But how driven is that gameplay experience like are you just like blasting through hordes and hordes and hordes or are like, is there variance in the game? So I'm not a, I'm not a Dynasty Warriors like know it all or anything like that. I know very, very little of those. What I would say is in terms of the main experience of that mission, it's Dynasty Warriors, I get the impression is much more about like you just because I've played the the high rule warriors game.

So I know what they are from that and they're very limited in terms of narrative and kind of objective design, I guess they're kind of almost more like sandboxes. This isn't this is closer when I say gears of war. That's what I think your opening kind of idea is is it is a third person shooter. It's got lots of narrative. It's got really high budget cutscenes that surprisingly are not like they're not 20 seconds. It's like a good two minutes of narrative.

What goes on looks absolutely stunning like they've captured the war hammer like vibe very, very well, which is the people that don't know is huge. The scale of it is ridiculous. Like you are going through cathedral like castles where the doors are 25 foot tall and you yourself are 10 foot.

You're surrounded by normal human soldiers who are like six foot so they look tiny compared to you. So it's all about kind of emphasizing the scale, but yes, it is more traditional single player style stuff, whereas Dynasty Warriors is more sandboxy. It's just you happen to be fighting the amount of enemies that you sort of would fight with Dynasty Warriors.

And yes, it does that thing where the little ones don't really pose that much threat to you. They're kind of gnawing away at your armor and they'll do a little bit of armor damage, but they can't particularly do that much damage to you. The bigger ones way more of a threat. And one of the interesting things about kind of like in the law of war hammer K40k is that the space marines are kind of considered like angels and they're almost like invincible.

And this game does a really good job of making you feel invincible until suddenly you're not and you realize no actually you are just a buff human in a case of armor. And when the big tyranny turn up it does become you actually you have to parry them with your sword or your shield and it's not parrying like it is in dark souls. It's got a much more generous window on it, but you are doing parries that then create interesting finishing moves.

And when the finish of moves happen like like Gears of Wars pretty gory, but this goes all out like this is you know there's a really great animation where one of the tyrannies is basically arms of swords and you break the sword bits off at the kind of elbows and then jam them down its float.

That sounds great. Yeah, there are other enemies in it which if you know what chaos space marines are which are in the law of war hammer 40k there is a civil war that happens before the start of the stories. So there are enemy space marines. And when you fight them there's one of the finishing moves is like you slam him in the face like six times and then rip its head off.

And because it's blood is like corrupted by the god of change like this eruption of like fluorescent blood spurts out like all sorts of like summer. Yeah, very pure sour. So it is like it's all in on the like 40k is absurd. It is in the similar way to because it's from the same school of sci-fi as things like judge dread right like it's supposed to be intentionally a bit bananas. Yeah, and it's got all of that in but the combat is really meaty and feels very satisfying.

You can die surprisingly easy which means that it doesn't feel like it's got it's not lacking in challenge. It's got a bit of a bit more thought to it. That's what my worry is that because just you know the premise alone space marine these giant fucking dudes I wouldn't want to just like blast through the game in four hours.

So that was I played it about this time last year and I was a bit concerned that that would be the case because in that demo they'd only really got the cannon fodder style tyrannist to fight and one of the main sort of things. This demo had a lot more a got the the rubric marines in it which are the enemy space marine so that was the first time I thought these.

But they'd also got proper bosses like carnafx is which on the tabletop a carnafx model is like half the size of my head it's a massive model so compared to you in the game yes you're 10 feet tall but this things like 30 feet tall. Massive and it can kind of charge around the arena and then there were a lot more kind of tyrannids that could change the battlefield like I said there's one that sprays out like this kind of organic goo that turns into like organic barbed wire that trap you.

So it's almost got a bit of that you know how left for dead had lots of specialists on the we're designed to put weird interventions into the game it's got a bit of that to it.

But then like yeah the whole story of that opening act is you're just trying to deliver a message which in any other sci fi game is you just pick up a like the radio and call your boss about what you want to say but because warhammer 40,000 is the whole deal of delivering a message is you have to take it to a psychic choir will deliver the message through basically the bowels of hell and it will torture them to do so it's got all of that mad grandiosity

but is done in a way that I think if you had no idea what 40k was it would just be like coming to a video game for the first time I think it's probably a pretty good entry point because it's got really strong gameplay from what I can see yeah that I'm now more convinced will scale well across the campaign

and it's you know it's well written it's got really rad cutscenes I like it a lot but that's got everything that was in the demo which is why I was really surprised about it it's got then so there is a I think it's a 5v5 multiplayer mode that's coming with it which I'm less fussed about I don't I'm not really a big PVP person

it's also got a second campaign the doesn't have a direct linear narrative in it but there are bits in the main campaign where your character Titus who you play as who is like narratively led will call of a space marine to talk about what they're doing on their missions and you get to play those missions in a separate campaign and this is designed to be more like what was he was

this is your supposed to play these missions over and over and they alter themselves and you've got different space marine classes that you can play as that have upgrade trees and you can upgrade their weapons and that's designed as a three player co-op almost like a left for dead style thing so because from I understand obviously the experience you just described that's cooperative but then you can also play the campaign yes in car as well

so essentially in the in the main campaign that is entirely narratively driven and that would be like playing giz of war in co-op then the operations is essentially I don't know if it's only there was six on the menu in the demo I only got to play two of them so I don't know if there's only six or whether the plan is we start with six and if it's successful we make more

but they are they don't really have the narrative drive it's not like it's got characters each one of the different space marine classes has a name and it's designed as if they are characters but they're not they're not fleshed out like the characters that you players in the campaign but yes in the in the main campaign you and two of the friends can players that heroic squads and then in the operations campaign you and your friends choose from I think it's

six different space marines and they're all based on different versions of space marines from the table top so there's one is the sniper one is the really heavy guy one is the jet pack guy and each has a special ability so jet pack guy can fire himself up into the sky and then land on enemies and just absolutely batter them the guy with the heavy bolt he's got like the equivalent of like a massive MG 42 from Coni World War 2

and he can't use a sword he can only he's he's got to be protected because he can only do ranged then you've got the ballwalk class which has a sword and a shield but can only use a pistol and there's each one has got like a whole skill tree to build around so you can play these missions over and over build out those characters and then you unlock extra skins with them to make them look the most

suspicious kind of like space marines possible you can put so much bling on them and then there's obviously a painting system in it that you can paint them so they look like they are on your personal table top at home it's it considering this is sort of been it's a focus entertainment game made by you know Saber are a reasonably big studio but they're not you know they're not a a dice or a

big dog or anything yeah I really I really like what I've played and I think it's got great promise and it also feels like admirably old school in the like when was the last time that you but it there's only really call of duty there the moment that's doing the you get a campaign and then you get like a zombies mode and then you get a

lot of play and there's really that sort of stuff used to be a bit more commonplace banking kind of like the early 2000s right but it's only really called a duty that's kept doing that because they've got gazillions of money I feel like you maybe one example would have been I think splinter saw black list that had the normal campaign you could play but then you had a specific co-op campaign that was

unique missions and you had like spies versus marks and stuff and like just those supplemental modes where you can still play with your mate but it doesn't have to be like killing each other because like you have a piece fine but I want to just be able to play the game with my mates as well and you're

getting two of that which is insane. So yeah I I've always had a good feeling about this just because kind of like from the first trailer it felt like if nothing else it was a studio that was willing to put money into a 40k game and it seemed that at least they got the setting

right they seem to understand what made a space marine how to build an animation system that conveyed the weight and the heft and the absurdity of the weapons like the main weapon that space really uses is a gun that fires grenades at rapid fire like it's an absurd thing

and you have to get that right yeah having now played it twice and played much more of it this time I genuinely just think it's going to be a good game it's not just a good 40k game it's a good game it just sounds like a yeah like a wicked cop game yeah really I'm

excited but I have not it's been a long time since I have dabbled in the world of warhammer like I used to play normal warhammer what what people call normal warhammer fantasy battle I believe is what it was originally called I think fantasy battle

warfarmie in that but in 40k I was all orcs I get that vibe from you you know very different to command yeah no orcs in in space marine too unfortunately because they were the enemies in the origin of space marine yeah but they always the enemies Jesus well I mean they

misunderstood they just misunderstood yes they seem like a bunch of pricks to be honest with the audio so the space freeze yeah the space reads a fascist like everybody in 40k a bunch of pricks but they've got all armor yeah that's the difference

but talking of you've been playing a game Jesse haven't you that's got orcs in it I certainly have so this came out I think a couple days ago and steam early access is called warhammer 40,000 speed freaks freaks is an FREKS not how you would normally spell it just in

case not good at spelling no absolutely not and you know that's even conveyed in just like a lot of the messaging in the in the game itself but speed freaks is a I don't know how to word this it's so I played a lot of war Thunder in the past and you know if you know what war Thunder is then you know you've got two teams fighting against each other a bunch of historical different vehicles and whatnot and a speed freaks is similar to that where it is a free to play the Hicular based team

combat game I suppose right now in early access there's two game modes which is kill kill Convoy and then deaf rally deaf rally is two teams of eight sort of driving towards different capture points race in each other at the start of a game and then when they get to a capture point there contestant fighting over it and then once they get enough points there then another capture point happens and then everyone races that next one so it's almost like a

king of the hill mode with racing involved and everyone's blowing each other up yet then you've got kill Convoy which I really enjoyed playing which is again two teams of eight and you've got these things called stompers which are almost like massive orc mechs their ginormous it makes no sense and you know they've got a bunch of different weaponry whether it's cannons and rockets and whatnot and one team has one stomper

another team has the other and you a random bomb spawns in the map and people have to race towards that bomb pick up and then drive into the enemy team stomper in order to slow it down so their stomper can progress throughout the map it's a race between the two stompers and all throughout it's absolutely chaotic because you've got I think maybe four or five different classes you know you might have a car that's near enough a tank and it's very slow and it's got a big cannon

I had a fun time playing as almost like an electrified sniper car that had sort of like a rail gun on it but could also go invisible and go at really high speeds I was able to like you know sneak around like sort of appear out of like the ether with the car but yeah you've got these people who are like rushing to collect the bomb and then you're protecting your teammate who's essentially doing a kamikaze run

against the stomper and it's just a back and forth and those the kill convoy mission lasts around 20 minutes long and I'm conflicted because I did have a fun time with it but I don't think it's something that like

I'm gonna gravitate towards towards to again like it was a fun time for when I was playing it I think so you've kind of seen it done it but surely there is more finesse to it than just that no no there is like you see people have just started playing it maybe you know there is an element of you know

deep astrashty there oh no absolutely not no because I mean you've got like a bunch of different classes and stuff so you have like a couple of support vehicles so you've got people like hanging around in the background circling your team who are trying to heal you at the same time

then you've got like you know the heavy tank cars who just go and in trying to defend the players at the back and so like it is yeah it's almost like overwatch with cars then with racing when the game demands you to race as well

it's like a demended Mario Kart at times and to be honest for a free to play game from what I've noticed so far I've only played I think maybe three or four matches it doesn't seem like there's any particular crazy micro transactions like I don't know that for certain but from what I gathered

it's more like if you want to spend a bit of money on like getting some different kits some accessories some different paint jobs for your orc carriage I guess then you can but there's nothing like yeah but there's nothing where like oh this guy because war thunder suffers from this

where someone would have paid 30 quid for a premium tank and they're absolutely fucking you up right now that's bullshit that is yeah it is it is don't do anything yet and so far from my understand speed freaks is doing that

it's again still in early access so it's got a few little niggle in bugs and whatnot but right now it's it's a fun time I think if you're to like squad up with a few mates then really like hone in and objectives and you're gonna have a good time but right now it was just it was quite chaotic

and if you're jumping into it for the first time it's gonna feel a little bit overwhelming and also it's just got it's got silly messaging as well like when you die it'll come up with like a little message saying like you just got cramped and stuff and it's like

what is going on none of this makes sense to me because the orcs all speak a weird version of Cockney are all are all the cars painted red because orcs genuinely believe that if you paint things red they go faster so and they do go faster because of the psychic link that orcs have

that just make what happens what they believe will happen because they believe it I mean there is a red and blue team so you know similar to Halo I guess and there's a decent amount of red but yeah there's there's 15 minutes of gameplay up on up on site and on our

YouTube and whatnot and that's primarily what it's it's only of the kill convoy match type so if you want to see the big stompers and again watching this gameplay it's probably gonna look absolutely insane to you but again it's free to play it's on steam

so it's worth giving a go as PC only I think I think so I didn't actually look into that myself because Dale's just like this came out just hop on it and I was like okay but if you got a PC then I feel like it's at least worth checking out see if it see if

it sticks with you yeah particularly that kill convoy match type it's quite fun and driving trying to race towards those randomly spawned bombs on the map dealing with other players and then if you get that bomb then having to navigate towards where their team spawns to like come a car see yourself is genuinely like quite and throw it I mean just looking at the screenshots of it yes it looks like reasonably well budgeted for you know as we're saying 4k games tend to get the

end of the stick when it comes to money but this looks like it's got some at least some graphics in it yeah I think like I had no doubt I had fun I don't know if I'm gonna if I'd ever go back into it might be the case that let me see a few more updates maybe some different match types and whatnot but for now I definitely had fun of it and if you do jump into it check out kill convoy because I think it's stronger than the other sort of team death match king of the hill

kind of match type one thing like I was in our local town with my boy the other day and I didn't realize that they had a games workshop although it's not called a game so it's called a war hammer shop yeah I don't like that they've done I didn't know that was the case is that a recent they're all called the war hammer shop now yeah that sounds kind of lame and and so going back to your point Matt where you're saying they normally get you know small budgets which is

insane considering how expensive everything is I'm honest like there was one figure I was looking at just for one figure and it was over 30 quid and I was oh my god well I didn't even realize this but Matt you point it out I assume like

so I don't know how but but is that similar to what Jesse was saying with War Thunder you buy an expensive figure because he's got better stats or doesn't it work like that on table top it works like that yeah essentially like you're you're paying money for kind of like the status within the kind of

game so like you can pay for a box of space marines will be the same process what you pay for the captain right and then there's obviously elements in it the scale like an Imperial Knight which is a massive mech like like a massive mech that's about 110 quid for the model oh Jesus I feel like there must be you roll your eyes there but I've seen your Lego collection oh yeah but I've had to stop because at least with your Lego collection it doesn't have stats

associated with it you build it and you have fun you're not gonna have some rich dickhead who's been like here's my 50 mechs on the tabletop game and then you've got like you can't feel like you can't feel 50 mech you get I know it was a battle points but if you've got the fucking I don't know like

Poundland edition like team self then you're gonna feel a bit bad well surely you could then have I don't know a hundred space marines versus one super command or whatever does that that specific model that you buy have specifics that's because it's tied in with a certain rules set or whatever so so the thing about 40k is a as a tabletop game it's patched like they do patches for it so right every couple of months there'll be what they call MetaWatch

which is they they analyze what all of the all professional tournaments they do they manage like the the win rates of every single army and they look at what the different point range as far but yes like if you buy a character in Warhammer and it comes and also there'll be you don't have some characters only have like what they come with like if they look on the box that they've got let's say an auto boat bolt rifle and they've got like a halo then that is what

they come with but quite often they'll have multiple choices in it and you build the character with the weapons that you want and then you'd select those offer stat sheet basically so you could have like a space marine captain that actually has a power fist instead of the power sword and it has a plasma pistol instead of a bolt pistol so you configure that all to how you want to build your personal army with I'm not particularly bothered about the actual

like gameplay of it I paint and I read the books but I know that some people can get quite annoyed because they're building army in one way and then they absolutely nerf it for when the season ends and so the order of those models

that you built and painted with that bullshit or as well that's scary well that's it like if you've selected X weapon and whatever and then presumably you have to use those yeah you can't just go actually I'm gonna cut his arms and stick this back on yeah so that's why with so for example with the

with stuff like the Imperial Knights which are the really big ones you do a you do a magnet system where basically you build all the arm arrangements that got the different weapons on it and you put magnets on them so when you know your Balkan cannon just isn't in vogue anymore you just take it off and replace it with a belter so in official tournaments as long as what you feel has got the right equipment on the actual model you're allowed to use it

if you do a magnet system that's absolutely fine but casual play you just say that like oh I know that my model has got a power saw but actually is using a power fist okay also kill team is much better for this because you literally only use 10 models and so it's like you only have to worry about 10 models rather than massive army that's that was for both my dwarf army and my orc army I think I had like a captain and a squad painted and maybe something

else and all the rest was free painted a little like a really big anyway this this is turned into the tabletop podcast rather than the actual video game podcast so interesting yeah well all the players were space marine two and speed freaks you know it's all about more hammer well the next one when I when we did a live show last I had more people come up to me and ask how to get into warhammer than anybody talked to me about video games so well that's because

because we saw it and obviously in the war hammer shop you've got a really well designed kind of map to play on obviously I didn't play on anything like that when I was a kid no imagination of Pringle Tins and stuff like that and they're just like I think I'd like to get into this and I was like it's quite expensive and I also know he's like me so he went out to patients to paint and I'll be the what sort of ages it from he's nine is that too young I think I was probably about

12 when I started that I've definitely been in like you know as an adult and seeing like eight year olds in their painting stuff so I think yeah like aside from the swallowing hazard and the fact that like you know particularly 40k is about a bunch of space fascists yeah but to them is just like cool master chiefs fighting you know walks and yeah essentially but then you start then you start going through the book I can imagine you're still getting to a certain page

of like a instruction book and it's just got a horrendous image of someone having their brain sucks out I know I know he can be a little bit sensitive with a more violent stuff maybe I'll wait I think that's our stun talking about warhammer we're gonna go to another galaxy far far away and Jesse you did some Star Wars stuff this week as well right I did do some Star Wars stuff now I'm maybe wondering what that is because literally nothing new has come out but

it's me and Revis in a how old is Jedi Academy now surely it's 2003 so that's that's quite a bit old but it's not me just playing Jedi Academy I checked out a mod this week called Star Wars movie dolls now Jedi Academy dolls doles doles I've never really said that word properly I don't know why

but not movie doors that's not right I'm gonna say I opened up doors to the movies but no tools as in fights yes Star Wars movie jewels there we go but yeah this this is a in progress free to download mod which is looking to recreate nearly every iconic Star Wars lightsaber battle from the Phantom

Menace all the way to the Rise of Skywalker and you've got the Clone Wars in there as well pretty much everything in between so every film near enough every TV show and then a bunch of stuff from the legends as well and what is about to exact Jedi Academy I sort of considered one of the like golden

era of Star Wars games when it was coming out you know around Cotor Battlefront all those kind of games and Jedi Academy is still sort of considered to have one of the more fun depictions of lightsaber combat but when it comes to this particular mod they've bumped it up a notch with a

bunch of like quality of life updates so now you can it sounds silly when how I'm gonna word it but you can manually block now which is actually a cool thing because Jedi Academy it was a very fluid combat system but here they've sort of refined it more to something you might be familiar with like Jedi survival battlefront to from 2017 and stuff but then also you've got again near enough like 20 or 25 missions to choose from spread across all the

different films so if you want to for example players I know Darth Maul fighting against Qui-Gon at the start of the Phantom Manus where they're in Tatooine and you want to play as Darth Maul and actually just kill Qui-Gon and get almost like a little MCU what if scenario because near enough every mission has a you know you can either play as what actually happened or you can play as the bad guy vice versa and even beyond that they've got custom made

challenge modes as well where you've got four different arenas you can go for and almost like boss rush gauntlets where I know I might choose to play as that's things I might choose to play as Yaddle right because they had they have

over a hundred characters that they've made and they will have custom animations and different combat styles and whatnot but I can choose to play as Yaddle and then the first person that might have to fight is shirtless Kylo Ren and Bob Affett and then that's like round one and then round two is

just a bunch of different other enemies from all across Star Wars so this mod is it's insane because it is a free-to-play mod for Jedi Academy but it encompasses so much like Matt you you just checked out my script and I was working on this in the video published not too long ago but it is it is an

extensive arse mod there's so much to sort of go through whether it's the custom made missions that challenge arenas or just even I don't know you want to spawn in on one of the individual maps and you're like okay I want to put 15 Jar Jar's against one Darth Vader who's gonna win that fight it's just like it's a Star Wars toy box where you can mess around with missions or you can just sort of freeform and just dick around I guess it's it's tabs was it tabs

yeah I was literally about to say tabs like I love the idea of just being able to like set up ridiculous like who could you put like 70 like 750 jar Jar versus like I mean your teenagers your computer might explain but you can certainly do it in the video at least I was just like thinking I was what's a decent way to show how silly this can get so I just spawned five younglings against Palpatine and the fight doesn't go the way you'd expect it would but

even even beyond that if you just wanted to play Jedi Academy or even Jedi Outcast because this mod is compatible with both of them if you want to play through those campaigns which you know classic Star Wars campaigns but as Obi-Wan as Darth Vader as Darth Maul as fucking Jar Jar Binks or as any of the other random Jedi you might have in your head you can just you can do that and the mod will work it's just it is just a fantastic toy box that I want people to

know about really yeah it's just fun the the jewels themselves because obviously like Saber Battles can be fairly short yeah how how well do they sort of play out is it like couple of hits and it's all over well it sort depends because it it does have sort of like a high amount of customisation available to for me I like to put the Saber damage to the highest it can possibly be and then you know to make use of like the manual blocking feature and stuff so if you're

going against Darth Vader he's not going to be sprinting towards you he'll sort of fight you as if you would expect Darth Vader to fight you you know like there's sort of being a big over arch and swings and stuff and you know he's going to be using the force grip to try and choke you out and whatnot but if you're going against Darth Maul he's going to use his own Saber staff and then as he's as you know deflecting that he might switch to like the single Saber

stance just in the middle of that fight so depending on the character you fight against and whatnot like they they have their own distinct styles and again because Jedi Academy's initial moveset that foundation was already really strong in the original game they've just expanded upon that with like I said manual blocking you can dash you can sprint you can do all these other sort of specific character related moves that they've added into the mod and yeah you

know some fights can be over pretty quickly like if I'm General Grievous and I'm going against layer she's gonna die. You love General Grievous you've got a

fucking love. No he's very cool okay but that's thing it's like you can play through the OG campaigns as anyone you want you can play through the missions from the films literally all of the films and then the mod even goes a step further where if you're a fan of the much older dark forces game or dark forces too they've remade missions from dark forces to input it into the mod they've remade missions from the force unleashed where you can play a star

killer so it's sort of just like an everything Star Wars mod wrapped up in Jedi Academy it's really really impressive. How long has this been in production for because it feels like this is like eight years worth of work. Well I think so this mod is I think sort of like a remastered version of a very old mods because I think these sort of mods have been around since near enough the release of Jedi Academy there's even a multiplayer equivalent of this mod

called movie battles to which again it's a similar premise where you know it's it's like Jedi Academy's very unversioned battlefront where you've got all these different types of characters just you know completing objectives and fighting against each other but this mod has been around for ages and you know there is a very dedicated and loving development team that's you know on Discord and they're always sharing new updates and whatnot but I've always

sort of had my eye on this mod used to play it a ton back in 2016 and 2017 and whenever they drop a new update it's like oh now there's missions from Cotto now there's missions from you know potentially Republic Commando and all these other just corners of Star Wars whether it's games movies even like maybe books or TV shows it's just it is everything and if you want to check it out there is a video that we've put together called the Dream Star Wars game

you've never played and there's like six or seven minutes of like a mod overview and then some gameplay so if you want to just find out what it is then I don't know to hand myself up but just watch this video this feels like the the Jesse promotional podcast well I mean I just I really think this is a really fun mod and because it's Jedi Academy you can run on a fucking potato you know where do I find it is it on Nexus mods it's not on Nexus mods it's on a mod DB and

there's also a thing called open JKA as well but if you just type in Star Wars movie jewels then you'll find it but yeah don't type in Star Wars movie doors no no I do wonder what happens when you do that right just get any realistic yeah well thank you Jesse is there anything else you

want to promote or push on this podcast well actually there is not what I started a pyramid scheme hopefully not who knows I'll find out soon once I get to that villa but I have played I so I played this let's see here I was think maybe late July and this game that I'm about to talk about also came out and later I it's called the operator and it's like maybe a five six-hour long indie game that released on steam it's only playable on PC at the moment and

it's gonna it is a narrative puzzler which to a lot of people might be like might you might think that's probably not a game for me and usually narrative puzzlers aren't for me but this game takes place entirely on a fictional

operating system of which you are essentially a member of like the FBI and it's got these sort of ex files slash seven vibes where you're an operator who just joined the bureau and you'll be in assigned cases and like I said it takes place entirely on this like a fictional operating system and

even just 30 minutes into it as completely hooked I think it opens with a murder case of which you get assigned this case and an agent causing like hey I'm trying to figure out what this murder case is I've collected some evidence can you take a look at it and then you're sort of doing these little weird C.I. C.S.I moments where it's like okay let me watch the footage of the murder and then you know you're sort of like scrubbing through the footage and then you

might click on the murderous face just on the frame that it appears and then the OS scans his face and then you've got that then and you're trying to look through the database in game searching up people searching up different information it's a hard way to it is it it sounds to me like it's just like more gameplay heavy version of her story you know how her story is that takes place entirely in the computer yeah and you're searching through video clips

trying to work out what her testimony is about is it kind of like that but with more traditional gameplay elements yeah I mean and that's the thing like you are just you are looking for a bunch of text images watching a video listening to different audio clips and at all times you'll have like an agent on the field that has called you you're the person helping them I'd be like you know I've just found this body and I'm going to send you a picture of like you know

their bones and I need you to investigate this and then you're like okay so you're you're searching up potentially you know their details on the database but then maybe there's a car in the background and you just notice the license plate you can open up the notepad in game start jotting things down

between all these cases trying to see how they link up you're looking at what does this guy actually have any aliases you know what's the address and stuff like it's you can get so technically nerdy with this game and it's every sort of case is interconnected with each other and again it's a

very short game but it's it's a super I don't know engaging thriller it's man in the chair the game by the sounds of it yeah like I just I just had so much fun with it like I put I think a couple hours into it the first night I played it and me and my partner were playing it together and then as soon as we went to bed it's like I really want to go out and just play more of this again so then just the day after like let's go let's just play it again and we sub

and we finished it but it's I feel like you'll you'll do yourself some justice watching the trailer it's sort of a hard came to define because you're not you're not really actively controlling a character you are dealing with cases sent to you using different software in game to you know look at

different samples whether audible picture you're taking down your own notes it is a very fun puzzle game wrapped up across this sort of like I said x files s slash seven-ish adventure it's it's bizarre but it is genuinely quite fun when you say it's x-files is it

like supernatural or is it more like seven than it's just a very dark kind of investigative piece I don't want to reveal too much because it's a short game but there's elements where you know you're going to be not everything's what it seems yes a hundred percent there is a grand a conspiracy

attached to everything and again it's like five six hours long it's nothing and thankfully the whole thing is voice acted as well so you're not going to have to do too much reading which is good because I don't know like this this is this is a bit of a tangent but I think it was again that you

recommended not too long ago 40k rogue trader yeah and like reading in that there is a lot of reading that but I tried playing it a couple weeks ago and I've been absolutely spoiled by boulders gate three we've waxed on about boulders gate three I fucking love it

went to rogue trader and I was like okay I'm feeling the vibes but then at some point characters just stop speaking and now I was just like ah I just I need the production value of like the voice actors and all that stuff and like I'm not getting that right now so I wasn't in the mood so it was

a pleasant surprise that this small indie game you know had some pretty good voice acting and some really intense moments there's there's one particular section where you have to disarm a bomb and there's an active time of going down you've just been sent this massive

manual but the handler says you don't have time to read the instruction manual you need to like look at the specific parts of the new instructor and him like okay tell me tell me what the bomb looks like how many wires are there what what the colors will sort of batteries are they using and stuff and you're going for all these things as the times counting down it's really really intense and of course you can just pause the game you know just figure it out

yourself I guess if you want to that's classic Jesse right I didn't do that I didn't do that I'm just finding a way to exploit the game it's not my fault but it's just it is a really fun little narrative puzzler where you are trying to seek out the truth for about four or

five hours and it's a really good time and it's the only question I've got left it is is the payoff good I would say it is because like last week I was talking about nobody wants to die which is not a narrative it's a narrative like gaming in that sort of way but you know you actually do move around the world and that I think like absolutely impeccable vibes in the fact that it's kind of like 1950s bladrunner like it's a sci-fi but it's got lots of 50s elements to it

and I love a lot of what that game's going for is but now I finished it the the payoff is not particularly strong I mean and when it's only five hours long I think you do really need a good payoff to make the whole thing work there's there's

it wasn't hard for me my partner to figure out like maybe a couple hours before like okay this is where it's going to but then there'll still a couple surprises where we're like well we really want to see what's this now but it we still had a very very good time with it so it's called the

operator it's on steam and much like Jedi Academy it probably doesn't take much to run you could probably run it on a shite little laptop if you have it and stuff because it's just text-based image-based it's not and you're not playing crisis on your laptop you know so check out the operator

it's I think available for under 12 quid and there's even a demo on steam so you can try it out for free if you want but it's very much worth I think and if you use the code Jesse Gomez yes then it gets 30% of all of the exactly I'll probably wicked wouldn't that be a day

I can buy some like love pack maybe you know treat myself what do you have instead of a backpack Dan pack which is the little I do remember this conversation yeah I mean to be fair it's great not that I just hear my this battle if that's what if that's your primary ambition in life

is to upgrade from Dan pack to love pack then good luck to you cheers man I appreciate it anyway I think there's some really good recommendations in there I am particularly excited about space brain and I think that's out in September so really not too long to wait we're gonna come up

The first piece of feedback we've got this week is from Luke Smith who says hey are he's not

American by the way? I'm great. I hope the week has been kind to each of you. Do you know what? It's been medium I would say. I've not been on a beach enjoying unlimited beer but hey it's nice to see you. You get unlimited beer at the beach you went to? Well the hotel yes. I just didn't didn't realize that that's pretty nice and dangerous as well. What if you get mad pissed and just stumble into the ocean? I am responsible. I'm not saying you're going to do that.

I'm saying someone will do that. I don't think the hotel has to take responsibility for someone's drinking. Yeah I'm just saying. They did. They also had unlimited slushies and Ed really made the most of these. I mean that's less dangerous and I appreciate his effort to make the most of it. Bouncing off the walls is insane. That's fine it's delicious. Literally go down stairs to the pool at 930s that can have a slushies. No dude. Anyway, after your recommendation

I decided to buy thank goodness you're here. I had a long day of work and needed good laugh. My partner was about to go and paint his models but after sitting through the first five minutes of the opening chaos we were hooked. I don't know what thank goodness you're here is but I'll continue. We played the game non-stop till the credits and old boy this is truly going to be a golden memory for us both. The game had us in tears on multiple occasions and we were just so

invested to see what happened next week with each new gag. Easily the two highlights for us were the icon they gave the spill the beans trophy which made us literally pause the game in horror and finding a piece of graffiti that simply said Graham loves Moss which my partner Graham did not

seem to share the same sentiment. That's cute. There was also a very obscure reference to a British video of a woman saying bye bye bus driver in a very high pitch voice which Trudy calls off guard as it is something we quite often and feel no one else has heard of. This is the weirdest thing I have no idea what was going on in this email but anyway so it's safe to say that this is easily one of my favourite games I've played and I can't thank

you enough for the perfect evening we've just had. Respect the speed, respect the sea and respect the fact that a tiny lemon man has the power to save for it. Alex does not understand. I have no idea what is going on. Alex so last week we were discussing thank goodness you're here a lovely little British game that's basically like a sketch show that you play. You play a tiny little lemon man who goes around a northern city helping people with their problems. It's bananas. It's basically

like a piphon-esque like Saturday morning kid show from the 80s. It's really weird but it's very very good. None of that made any sense to me whatsoever but okay thank goodness you're here. You know those cute stories like that. I'm very pleased that you enjoyed that recommendation. Yeah, got some personal connection as well isn't that lovely. Jesse you've got the next piece. From Ryan Walker he says,

Hey IGN UK crew, hope all is well on your side of the pond. Shout out to Cardi in the gang for providing many years of good cheer and stellar unfiltered reviews of all our fun obsessions. One second Cardi in the gang. Why is it like he's the leader what's going on? Jesus Christ. To be fair Cardi has probably put more hours into the podcast than anyone else. He's a man who likes to do a podcast. Yes recently maybe but I've been here since

God damn 2009. Yeah but that's that might as well be like in the 80s Alex no one remembers those days okay so. Thanks Ryan. Ryan continues to say, your podcast will shared with me just before the pandemic madness which helped me keep my spirit up all while consistently steering me towards great games films television and treats many British snacks I'd never heard of. It was my first time writing from Salt Lake City Utah. Please forgive the length. Feel free to edit. We didn't.

All right. Well you can't edit as you read it. No I don't want to do that. We're getting the the true unfiltered Ryan Walker here. Anyway based on your GLO in recommendations for thank goodness your hair first I'd heard of it. I snagged it and I'm chomping at the bit to start this afternoon. It checks off two very appealing boxes right now. It's super short and sounds hilarious. With that in mind you got me thinking about my favourite comedy games and agree with many of your

recommendations like what wait. Why is my brain faltering at that word right now? UGG. What is that? I don't remember talking about UG. As Cardi spoken about UG I don't know. UG boots. Well that's the only thing I'm aware of. I was thinking of UG boots. Well I brain just shut down reading that Jesus Christ anyhow. Ryan says also GTA 5 and the Monkey Island

games. Some great recommendations right there. You brought to mind not exactly what you consider comedy games but ones that have brilliant hilarious moments like in Red Dead 2 and the Chalonea cult and the Luzin Lenny Drunken Bar scene in Valentine. Lenny bit is really good. It's really good. Also tears of the Kingdom side adventure the all-clocking Kuku is one of the funniest sequences I've ever experienced in a game. Did you experience

that Alex because you're a big-zolder nerd? I've experienced everything. That's the truth. Not everything to do with Jesse. You're excited somewhere. I think both tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild generally have a weirdly funny, often thirsty tone looking at you grabby fairy fountains. I do agree a little bit much. Lastly you asked about favourite heist films. The first one that came to mind was Logan Lucky which is part of the funny botched heist canon with a stellar cast and soden...

Oh my god. Sodenberg. Yeah, sodenberg. Sorry. Nailin' every silly beat. I've not heard of that film before. Logan Lucky. Yeah. Is it good? I think I've seen it. It's fine. It's fine. Just didn't realise there was a funny botched heist canon. I don't know. There's some sort of film series. I'm not aware of. Daniel Craig was especially fun to see break out of his somber bond persona at the time would raise an Arizona be considered a botched heist film as well. Why don't even know

what that film is. I'm sure if Cardi was here then he could whip out his list of fantastical films he's watched and chat all day about it. I have seen raising Arizona but it was rented from a blockbuster many many many years ago and I cannot remember much about it. I get it because it's co-in brothers and a lot of their stuff tends to be about botched criminal or guys like elements gone wrong. In the way that Fargo is very have you seen Fargo Jesse?

No. Fargo is about someone that's trying to kind of essentially gain money from a rich father-in-law by essentially sort of kidnapping his wife but not kidnapping his wife. Is that both a film from the 80s and also a TV show or am I thinking of that? Yes so the TV show uses inspiration from the film. Ah okay. But they are all essentially about like botched criminal enterprises. Very good. I mean I'd like to check out it has been on my list I think at least a film version

of Fargo for a while. But you'd absolutely watch the TV show as well it's very very good. I wouldn't mind doing that but Ryan finishes off with saying thanks again for all you do especially calling out those who roast chickens in microwaves and reminding us to respect the sea cheers Ryan. Now a point with the roast chicken on the microwave I brought this up a while back. There is a review of this podcast out there on chartable and I'm going to self-indulge here right.

The header of the review says. The podcast has been self-indulge it's for you Jesse. But go on. Listen man other people do it as well it's my turn so we're going to have to deal with it. The subject header says rain Jesse in and the review begins we're saying makes me feel old saying this great podcast but please please rain Jesse swearing in. I can think of no reason why someone needs to be swearing every other word when talking about a microwave to chicken.

And that podcast I got emotional and it was an emotional response because no one should be microwaving roast chicken as their first response to making a roast chicken. No one should ever do that. So I just want to get that clear. So I have a wrote that review if you're listening. I'm watching as well. All right my eyes are everywhere. Wow. Jesus. Anyway onto the lovely next bit of feedback from Matt. Last piece of feedback.

This went somewhere there didn't it? Well this one's from Johnny who says good evening lads and lasses depending on who's on this week. I hope you're doing well and are still surviving the heat. I thought it right in after your recent discussion to put for what I think is the funniest game of all time and that has to be conquer bad third day on the end 64. The game starts off strongly by putting you in control of a very hungry squirrel.

You have to help with urinating and then later on we have the infamous scene featuring a giant singing turd who calls you a massive twat. There's many of them over time. I won't spoil just in case people out there who still haven't played it but I think this puts in good content for being

one of the funniest games that we've had and I wish they'd make a sequel. Also following going from another chat you had a few weeks ago the games I'm looking forward to most for the rest of the year are the Plucky Squire, Mario and Luigi, Brother Ship and the new legend of Zelda shame on you all for not mentioning this. Sorry we haven't had Alan for a while. Yeah exactly. I assume you're really looking forward to that one Alex.

Very much so yes but equally I just like we had the opportunity to go and play it. I just want to wait until I've got the full game. I want it to be a surprise. Fair enough. That's what for now keep working as always respect the God damn sea. Actually I have a few follow-ons PS what's your number one thing to buy from Greg's? Sossage roll. Sometimes it's just as simple as a sausage roll. Alex is going to be in the state face right now. Maybe that's because I'm

slightly more middle class but yeah. Oh wow. You know steak and medium. This is a big head weight. Not a big head. Medium. The tartar bacon. Okay I don't think you can. Can you write this a joke? That's a joke. That would be insane. Can I please have that medium? No such a twire. Then we've got PSS which is I normally have seen it PPS but this is PSS. Our genum wears okay. I haven't heard them on the pod for a while.

Gen actually has a sore throat today. We did ask her to come on but she is ill so she's technically not okay. Where's his fine? He's away on holiday. PSS has people related birthday to Dale's son. Sounds like he's the plating. That's all from Johnny in the lovely Stockton on Tees. Stockton. That is indeed the end of this week's podcast. As always you can email us at IGN underscore UK feedback at IGN.com. Next week we'll be preparing to fly to Germany and the

week after that we'll actually be broadcasting from Germany. So we've got an exciting couple of weeks coming up. Well that's what we do Jesse isn't it? No I know but it makes us seem like there's like this going to be fantastic production for this podcast when we're in Germany and everyone's going to be pissed. We'll be saying someone's hotel room. Swigging beers, chatting shit on a tiny little recording. Exactly. Yes we need to be transparent for these long-term
