Our guest this week is the very funny Julia Macias. Julia describes herself as an “antenna for the unwell”. She exploded into the Asheville comedy scene late 2021, and has already performed as far as Pensacola, Florida and Atlanta, Georgia. On this interview, Julia shares her impression of me, and we talk about the “F” word. We discuss anxiety, and what produces anxiety for each of us. We also discuss Julia’s transition, a past relationship & lessons she learned by the idealizing of a partner in how they make you better vs. true love and connection. Julia shares her approach to standup, and how she connects to general audiences with personal stories from her experience as a trans woman, separating the personal from the political. She also shares her story of moving to Asheville while she was “homeless-adjacent,” living in extended stay hotels, and finding community and meaning through standup.
