這一則故事提示我們：智慧雖然從多聞而生，但除了多聞之外，還要身體力行、知行合一才可以。如《出曜經》說：「雖復多誦包識眾經，不順其法如其教誡，違法自用者於法有損，不名多聞。」（大正4，643c15-17）意思是說：即使讀誦眾多經典，如果不能依教奉行、違背佛法、剛愎自用的話，就不能稱為多聞。
