這一則故事提醒我們：說話要非常謹慎，千萬不要口出惡言。
過去修禪定的比丘因為整晚聽到比丘誦經的聲音而無法入定，於是起了瞋恨心，責備誦經比丘整晚都在叫叫叫，聲音像蝦蟆一樣。其實誦經比丘也夠精進了，整個晚上都在誦經。由於修禪定的比丘造了這樣的口業，所以五百生中經常感得蝦蟆的業報身。不過，由於今世對佛起清淨心，而且牧牛人撐著的木杖壓在牠的背上，蝦蟆還能忍痛，護持牧牛人聽法，由於這樣的善因緣而生天，之後下來人間聽佛說法而證得初果。
