這故事主要是提示我們：修行一定要培養獨立作業的能力，不能只是想依靠別人，那是靠不住的。而且在尚未得到不退轉之前，還是要不斷精進學習、練習。
佛法如此，世間法也是一樣。曾經有一位得過世界冠軍的桌球選手說：「桌球要天天不斷地練習。一天不練，自己知道；兩天不練，教練知道；三天不練，所有的觀眾都知道。」
我們修行，自己有多少實力自己知道，善知識只是助緣而已，最終還是要靠自己。
