這一則故事主要是提示我們：對財物、身體、性命不要過於吝惜，但也不要輕視它們。應該利用它們來利益眾生、供養三寶、親近善知識、聽聞佛法、精進修學，能以無常的世間財富換取出世間的功德法財，以危脆的色身換取金剛不壞的法身，以有限的身命換取無窮無盡的慧命，這樣子才有意義。
