這故事提到，有一位盜賊首領帶著很多人洗劫村莊，那時非常口渴，命令一位少女趕快拿水給他喝。這位少女先仔細地觀察水中是否有髒東西，再拿水給盜賊首領喝。盜賊首領就覺得很奇怪：我們這樣子劫奪你們的財產，照理說，應該是希望我早點死亡才對，怎麼還擔心我會不會生病呢？這時少女說：「隨君作不作，我常依法行。」意思是說：「不管你怎麼樣，我一切都是依正法而行。」這句話非常重要，值得我們學習、效法。
其實，各人修行各人得，不要說「有伴我才去聽經、學法」。人生無常，最後要往生時，都是獨來獨往的，你難道還要找個伴才去往生嗎？沒這回事啊！所以，學佛的人應該把握現在，努力培養福德、智慧資糧；即使其他人都不學，只剩下我一個人，我還是要精進地學佛。
