這個故事是提醒我們要修忍辱，要知恩報恩。
愚癡的人遭遇惡罵毀謗時，就像兩顆砂石在雙眼之中無法忍受；而有智慧的人即使受到惡毒謾罵及嚴重的毀謗也能安忍，就像花散落在大象身上，若無其事。
另外一個譬喻也很好，受到辱罵、毀謗，明辨事理的人具有慧眼，所以能安忍，就像大雨打在巨石上，巨石也不會有損壞，有智慧的人能安忍就像巨石一樣。
一個知恩的人，即使在樹下只受到少許的陰涼庇蔭，也知道感恩。而忘恩負義的人，卻常常恩將仇報，這種人不會生起善法，是不會得善報的。
