這一則故事有幾個地方值得我們反省。
祇夜多尊者，在其他的經典說他已經證得阿羅漢。他雖然證得聖果，有大威德，聲名遠播，但他並沒有感到驕傲自大，反而放下身段做粗重的工作為僧眾服務；他不僅修智慧斷煩惱，而且還積極地累積福德。
祇夜多尊者過去五百世生為狗，經常挨餓受苦，只有兩種情況能稍微感到吃飽滿足，一種是吃醉酒人嘔吐出來的食物；一種是趁人家不在時去偷吃他人的食物，結果被發現，被主人砍斷頭而失去了寶貴的性命。
經中說：如果煩惱深重，造惡業會墮畜生道受苦。這值得我們警惕！現在我們有幸得人身，應當好好珍惜，廣修善法，累積福德、智慧資糧，今生不將此身度，更待何時度此身？
