這一則故事有幾個地方值得我們深入體會。
眾生造惡的主要原因多是由於貪、瞋、癡三毒所引起的，例如指鬘的師母起了愛染心，達不到目的就想誣陷指鬘；指鬘的老師一聽到夫人的抱怨，起了瞋恨心，沒有明瞭真相，就要陷害指鬘；而指鬘受了老師的指使，沒有明辨善惡，就殺了許多人，甚至還差一點犯了逆罪。因此，必須要斷除貪、瞋、癡等煩惱，才不會造惡業而輪迴受苦；若要滅苦，就應如理思惟「空」的道理。
