Depart From Me

What is being produced in your life? Perhaps it's time to root out the false teachers.
These final four teachings of Jesus are sobering. We can deceive ourselves into believing we are his true disciples without it being true. We must take intentional action to be living into our new lives in Christ.
We've been taught this principle since kindergarten, but how good are we at living it out?
Not sure if this is a repost...sorry if so...
Certainly you have prayed for something and not received that something before. Then you've come across verses, like Matthew 7:7-11, which seem to indicate that when we ask for anything in the Lord's name we will receive it. How do we reconcile the apparent conflict between our lived experience and the promise of Jesus himself?
We've all heard, and likely said, the words "Judge Not." What did Jesus mean by this and how do we effectively live in a world that requires a Christian to have discernment without "judging"? We rush to save up money or possessions so we don't have to worry. We rush to store up accolades and acceptance so we know where we stand with others. But what if the rush for these earthly treasures is actually the cause of our worry? Fasting, like Sabbath, is a way to turn our hearts and minds to the God who sustains. It is a way to connect our physical longings with our spiritual dependence on God.
The Lord's Prayer can be a powerful tool to remind us of God's love for us, his provision for us, and the forgiveness we have received from him. But it can also become an empty thing that we have memorized but has been robbed of its power. Let's take a look at this familiar prayer and see how it can breathe life into our own prayers. Here's an awesome tool for you to add to your arsenal that will help you get more out of your Bible reading.
You probably don't hate your enemies. There are some, sure. But you're more likely to be dismissive of those who you would consider enemies or "other." Jesus calls us to not just avoid retaliation, but to seek the good of our enemies.
These are familiar words. "Turn the other cheek" and "go the extra mile" are familiar catchphrases used by Christians and non-Christians alike. What if Jesus were serious?
Dauod Nassar is a living example of what it means to love your enemies. In Ephesians 5, Paul tells us that marriage is a picture between Christ and the Church. What would it take for Christ to divorce his bride? This is the ideal that Jesus is laying out in the gospels when he speaks of marriage and divorce. Much of the debate around divorce is trying to figure out exactly when divorce is or isn't allowed, but we pay little attention to the design of marriage in the first place. Today we answer a question sent in by Elisabeth... What are practical and productive ways that Christians can respond to the world’s compounding crises (at this current moment, BLM/police brutality and the Yemen crisis, but at the rate we are going it’ll be something new tomorrow) in a way that allows us to both a) remember that God is in control and we have hope in Him and b) actually help enact meaningful change in our world in a gentle, gracious way? What should the balance be between trying ...
What do we do with the OT law? Are we still supposed to follow it? Maybe just parts of it like the 10 Commandments? Jesus didn't come to abolish it, but to fulfill it. What does that mean for us? In 2015, I remember telling Leah, my wife, that I was no a political atheist. I was determined to removed myself from politics all together. That didn't last long. But a few months after the 2016 election I picked up Jesus Untangled: Crucifying Our Politics to Pledge Allegiance to the Lamb by Keith Giles. This helped me to put politics in its proper place. I need not abandon it totally, but I need not put more hope, time, and energy into than is helpful. Be sure to follow the podcast on Spotify ...
