Yes, all of the single letter URLs are taken and if you all want the ridiculously expensive Welcome to Fun Fact Friday. This is a weekly podcast where discuss topics surrounding a different topic and facts surrounding a different topic isn't what it's not taken. Yes, it is. It can't be reached DNS probe. That means nobody's using it. Okay. Yeah. Weekly, weekly show facts. Fun Fact. Friday, you know, I'm David.

Leila

I'm Leila. Mark.

David

So what are we talking about this week? Leila?

Leila

We're talking about sharks. Shark shark.

David

Sure. Yes, I'm low energy going on over there. You were sorry. I was singing a minute ago was was Yeah, we were we were all singing to the to the ultimate showdown of ultimate destiny.

Leila

We listened to Lemond even ready for the show.

David

So fun bag gets us in the mood. You know, you gotta get get to have a certain vibe going with things you did.

Leila

Is it necessary?

David

I was one pressure. Yeah. Nine Inch Nails was one person like nobody. And he goes on tour. You know the other people. Trent Reznor. Yeah. But yeah, sharks. So we came up with this topic.

Leila

You want to tell the story? I No, no. I like sharks. I really like sharks. And I'm, like, very interested in right now. We're at dinner the other night. And I was like, they were talking about something. And I was just thinking about sharks. And I was like, I like sharks.

David

It was. So it was it was such a non sequitur that it was just, it was my wife and I's 20th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, and we went, we went out to eat at the place that I took her on the night that I proposed to her. So it was like, you know, memories and all that fun stuff. And we're sitting there, I remember what we're talking about, but we kind of there's a break in the conversation. And we'll just

Leila

there combo was over. So I'm gonna get in there. Whatever I wanted to talk about. Because it's got to be all about me, you know?

David

Like sharks.

Leila

I like turtles, turtles, stingrays, I just said this.

David

And she's like, old number of fingers. Like listen up to things that you want to do.

Leila

Don't get me wrong. I don't want to be like a marine biologist or anything. I just really like, actually like seeing animals, man. Yeah,

David

you can. You can like stuff without wanting to be involved in it as your career.

Leila

Yeah.

David

Yeah. That's how it is. But before we get started on sharks, we have to wait, do we have any other any other news? We have good news. We have some good news.

Leila

So I'm a professional broadcaster. Yeah, I know. It was one of those buttons.

David

So good news. Oh, wait. Welcome

Leila

to Fun Fact. Friday news with your lead and only anchor for today. Yeah,

David

Leila couldn't find a good news story. Okay.

Leila

She like three lemon demon songs. Yeah,

David

11 likes awake this, what? Nine to 12 minutes. So isn't it was a good amount of time looking for a good story to run. And it's just, it's not that there's not a lot of good news. It's just the sights that she was looking on. And, you know, we don't always want to do dog stories. But anyway, yeah. On to the good news that I found. They found they turn that down a little bit. Scientists say that an 11th century Islamic astrolabe, bearing both Arabic and Hebrew inscriptions. It's

one of the oldest examples ever discovered. And only an a one and only a handful of a handful that I don't know, reread. I'm gonna reread what you're saying, Okay. I'm just gonna, I'm gonna summarize the first paragraph. What's an astrally? Okay, and astrolabe is a it's this metal device that they used to use to track the movements of celestial bodies like stars, the sun, you know, where they call constellations, things like that. So it's this metal disc that they would keep track of

what's going on in the universe with back in the day. Yeah. And they found a really old one. But the cool part and they found really old ones before, but the cool part about this one is that it had inscriptions in Arabic and Hebrew. And they did as much research as they could on it. And they found that, like they thought it was fake at first. But they found that this single astrolabe had been hanging around and used by multiple different groups. And like you could tell by how the things

were inscribed, that they were like working together. So you had Muslim, Christian and Jewish scientists all working together with this astrolabe. I thought that was that was the cool part. That's like, the good news part is that they, you know, it, there's different you know, people have their differences. But when it comes down to you know, getting the work done, getting, you know, discovering things, everybody can can get together and use the same tools and work together. So it was

really neat. And while reading this, they were like, the doctor, her name is, I think her name is Dr. gegaan pay suggests that the Astro astrolabe might have been made in Toledo. And I was like, you know, with you, and I'm what? I've started anything with? Oh, no, no, it's Toledo with you know, just anything. What's a camera with you? I'll tell you more about in a second. Okay. So Toledo. I was thinking Ohio. This was made in Ohio in the 11th century now, but there's there's a Toledo

Spain that I didn't know about. All right. And that's that. I think that'll do it for her for our good news segment.

Leila

Yeah. Happy good news.

David

Leila does does does have one piece of good news. Oh,

Leila

yeah. It's International Women's Day. Oh, yeah. That

David

wasn't what I was talking about. I was talking about what you get in the mail yesterday. Oh,

Leila

I got an umbrella.

David

That's good news everywhere. Kind of a big deal because it's been raining a lot lately and

Leila

so much. She's just got like a notification. That was like severe weather warning for tomorrow morning. Oh,

David

she's gonna walk down to the bus stop. At the you know, it just seems like it's like a house down two houses down. But yeah, I do have to walk. Right? And then you know, you know how it is. You don't want to get wet. Especially when you're on your way to school. You know, when you get home, you can change everything. But so we've got a that's it for the for the good new.

Leila

Oh, that was a yawn.

David

All right. So what what else did you were just about to talk about International Women's Day? No, Toledo. Toledo.

Leila

Yeah, what's the Toledo with you? So my friend. My friend was just saying something new today. And I was gonna ask What's that? Like? What's the thing that you were talking about? I don't remember we're talking about like, genuinely, like, Give me Give me something.

David

A tire?

Leila

What's the tire with you? You know, like, we were talking about something that I didn't know about. So I was gonna say, what's a tire but I was like, What's a tire with you? You know, like from the lion gang.

David

Right? What's a moto moto with you? It's a moto with you. But think it's so funny. It didn't work. It didn't didn't really work so good. With the other thing, but that's what makes it funny.

Leila

That's what makes it funny, isn't it?

David

What's the Toledo with you? All right. So why don't we get into some shark talk?

Leila

Shark talk with cool guy.

David

What's what's shark? Yeah, Shark Tank with a cool guy. What is what is a shark? I don't know. Wait, what's your favorite shark? That's what I used to ask every episode. Okay. Okay. Oh, you got your you pull it up. Yeah, yeah, start the search machines. I gotta make sure it's real. So there's a whole bunch of while you're doing that, well, Shark whale shark that's the that's the big huge one right. I think that's the biggest one it's

Leila

the one with the big open now. Oh,

David

yeah. Now there's always open it looks like a

Leila

not really but like look at it right? He's so long. Yeah, well derpy so they're so silly looking. Look them up if you if you can right now.

David

I like the just the standard shark like the great white light. Yeah, just that's what I that's, that's my favorite movies and stuff. And movies have kind of given a bad rap. And we'll we'll talk about that.

Leila

Sharks are cool to

David

do you know that there's more than 1000 recorded shark and re species in the ocean. Did you know there's more than 1000 Sharks? There is at least more than 1001 Sharks. Nearly nearly 40% of all of the species of sharks are threatened with extinction.

Leila

Yeah, so people do eagle and shark. Yeah.

David

And that's, that's leads right into my next fact. Oh, sharks actually aren't that bad.

Leila

They aren't at all.

David

Everybody vilifies them.

Leila

Yeah One says like, Oh, no sharks No.

David

brings me to my my next pet coconuts are more dangerous than sharks. Yeah, falling coconuts kill 30 times more people than sharks do that. And that's we kill about 100 million sharks every year in fisheries, I believe. And sharks only get about five people a year. Yeah. And that's so so. So what that what that is, is it's called availability heuristic. Since the shark attacks are so rare that our perception is skewed. So we hear about every single shark attack. Yeah, right. We

Leila

think like they happen all the time. Right. So

David

when one does have is like, wow, there was just another shark attack. Oh my gosh, we just heard about one what is going on?

Leila

When in reality, it was just the only shark attack since then.

David

Exactly. Exactly. So it's, it's it's called a availability heuristic. It's a shortcut that our brains use to I don't know, it says things that are out of the ordinary make better news, you know, because if they're not gonna be like, report every fender bender on the highway, or on the roads, because it just happens so often that people be like, Yeah, that happens 30 times a day. Why are you telling us it's not news? It's not newsworthy. Something

Leila

really cool about sharks is that they don't have vocal cords. So they're like silent, they're silent. They don't make any noise. And I think it's so cool.

David

Oh, wow. No, they're not silent. What do you mean, they go?

Leila

I know you're gonna say, yeah, the low hanging fruit.

David

Yep. You always gotta go to low hanging fruit.

Leila

You should probably. Well, people in my class already know that. I was gonna say you need to tell other people in the class. About

David

low hanging fruit. Yeah, there's always there's always the one joker who who goes for the cheap joke. And that's me a lot of time. You know? Once you're a dad, you're just like anything for a laugh? Ah, you know? Yeah. Even if it's a pity laugh. Sharks. They have teeth. Did you know that? And no. They. They have they have? They have like, they have at least like three teeth. Yeah. Humans have about 32 teeth. Uh huh. Do you know how many teeth that's like permanent teeth? So you know,

and then they have the baby teeth. So probably what, what? 4850 teeth? Lifetime, right? Do you know how many shark teeth a shark makes in its lifetime? No, any idea? Just take a take a wild guess?

Leila

Like maybe 530,000. Oh,

David

yeah, shark teeth are constantly falling out. There's a couple places on the beaches of North Carolina, where you can pretty much always find sharp teeth. That's so cool. Because they come they can wash it up so you can go go out in the morning, especially right after the tide goes out and go out in the sand and you can find enough sharp teeth to make it look like a necklace or something. We used to go do it when I would go to the beach with some friends when I was in middle school,

actually. So you know. And if you go to an aquarium that has shark sharks in the aquarium, that sometimes you'll see scuba divers in there like getting all the teeth. And they sell them in the gift shop.

Leila

So basking sharks have like not that many teeth. Yeah, they don't need teeth to chew. Because if you look at a basking shark, their mouth is just open all the time because that's how their bone structure was made. They grow they go through the water and stuff just goes in their mouth. Yeah, they're like plankton, like

David

a fish vacuum. Yes, like wall through the through. There's not they don't do that because they don't have vocal cords.

Leila

Vocal cords, they just go

David

to the ocean. And you see, you see people who listen, people who listen to our show with the silences cut out, aren't gonna get that

Leila

you're gonna get that joke. Listen with the silences. The

David

silence uses the comedy, The Comedy of now, I'm not going to tell you how to listen or show you don't listen to our show. I know we have people listen super fast. They

Leila

have a total of 1500 Tiny hooked teeth. Oh, we need a little hook teeth to keep the stuff in. Oh yeah. So

David

the stuff goes in. It's like little Velcro. Yeah, kind of like little Velcro or really, really little tiny. Yeah, a little little hook and loop system they got going on. It's so funny

Leila

that they have like rows of teeth. They have six rows of teeth and their upper jaw and nine rows and their lower jaw. So they have rows. Yeah, it's just so cool.

David

Did you know you have If you have a relative who had two rows of tea, yes, I did two full rows. Kind of weird. Okay, so do you have any more

Leila

on on what you were talking about? unmasking check? No. Okay.

David

All right now. So, sharks. There are three different ways. They're one of the rare animals that depending on which species it is, they give birth, or lay eggs or a combination of both like the sharks lay eggs. Okay, so there's there is the AVI Paris, Avi Paris, sharks that lay eggs. This protected by an egg case, also, also known as a mermaid purse. Oh, are you looking at it? Yeah, yeah. Also known as a mermaid purse. The female deposits the egg case in the

ocean. And once the pups are fully developed, they chew their way out. All right, about 40% of sharks reproduce this way. And then there is the weird Vivah Paris. Sharks, and I'm probably saying this wrong. They carry the embryos to term and give birth to live shark pups. Yeah, that's interesting. That's larger, larger species like hammerheads and blue sharks. You have questions?

Leila

I'm asking Google, you're asking

David

Google. I've got chat GPT up if you want to ask chatted up also. And then there is of the the Paris of vivre, Paris, they produce eggs, but instead of those eggs hatching outside the body, the eggs are carried to full gestation, gestation. And when the eggs hatch, then the shark pups will continue developing inside the female until it gives birth. So like just kind of kind of holds the eggs inside. And then and then they're like, half born, and then they and then later on, they're born. So

Leila

I asked Google the question, but it was a really dumb question. So we're not gonna bring it up.

David

No, you can't do that. So I

Leila

asked Google are sharks mammals. But not thinking about it? Because I was like, they give birth to live young sometimes. Right. So mammal, obviously, I didn't think about the fact that they have gills, or that they don't refer. That's

David

not the only criteria. So yeah. Yeah. Skip that one was kind of gruesome. Um, let's see. And links to all of these will be in the show notes. So if we skip one and typically we do skip a few items per list that we that we find there is sharks don't have bones except for their teeth. That's why you'll never see like a shark skeleton at a museum. But you will see, like the big old shark teeth, you know, like the big huge ones on the on the wall, which is kind of a circle. That is really

cool. Do you have a view? Or is it want me to keep going? Yeah, just jump in. Most sharks have really good eyesight. Because you know,

Leila

sharks can feel similar sandpaper. You told me to just jump straight in.

David

Yeah, just jump right in. Do you know Yeah, it's like I found a shark before. In the I like, we have aquariums nearby, like hour an hour and a half drive. And we love going to like the petting part of it where you can pet the sting rays and pick up the horseshoe crabs and, and that's, that's the only part of the aquarium that I enjoy. Yeah,

Leila

so when you flip a shark upside down, they go into tonic immobility, which is like a, like they go into a trance when you flip them over, which I think is so funny. Like, imagine. Imagine if you were just laying down one day, and someone can even flip you over. Or no, I'm gonna just you lay on your stomach one day, and someone came in to put you over and you went. And like didn't wake up until they flip you back

over. I think that's so funny. And I love it so much. And you'll you'll often see like sawfish flipped over when scientists are working on them. And I think I think it's fine. I think it's fun. That's

David

hilarious. Yeah,

Leila

it just flipped over they go. I don't

David

love a running gag.

Leila

All right, keep going. Sharks been around for a long time. That's literally one of the facts on here. Sharks have been around for a very long time. Based on fossil scales found in Australia in the United States. Scientists hypothesize sharks first appeared in the ocean around 455 million years ago.

David

I don't know about that. I think the oceans were made a hot lava back then.

Leila

I think you were made a hot lava back then.

David

So Oh, let's see where we at. I'm gonna skip. I'm gonna skip some so you can

Leila

eat whale shark spot pattern is unique as a fingerprint. These are my favorite whale shark. And whale sharks are the big ones that have the wide mouth that have the little skinny body. And then they have little dots on their blue and they have like little, little white spots. And each one of those is very unique. Oh, yeah, yeah.

David

So I want to say a read something about fingerprints.

Leila

Whale sharks are the biggest fish in the ocean.

David

The biggest fish? Not the biggest mammal. Yeah.

Leila

They're not a mammal. Obviously.

David

Whales are mammals, right? Yeah, yes, no. So I went whale watching one time I love whales. I went whale watching. In fifth grade. There's a they used to have a program in North Carolina called the voyage of the Mimi, which was really neat. Shout out to Mimi 20 eggs.com Great book. And then not the same, not the same Mimi. voyage of the Mimi is a it was about a boat, like a whale, whale watching boat, I think it was anyways long time ago. And they get shipwrecked. And like they,

it was really cool because it was like fifth grade. But they taught you all kinds of like, survival stuff like how to how to desalinate water. So if all you had, the only source of water you have is sea water, you can get fresh water out of it. And they taught you how to make a fire without matches or a lighter. And they taught you it was a bunch of really neat little survival stuff. But you also learned a whole lot about whales. And then at the end of that whole course, you got to go

whale watching. And the humpback whales migrated nearby and we got to actually go out on a boat and see them as a field trip. And that was really neat. Up until the point where me being stupid. I bought two chili dogs. And I had a whole bag of barbecue Fritos not like a little bag, like a whole like a whole bag. And I ate it and then got on a boat. And it didn't end well. didn't end well for me. I was it was not a good time. Also, we bought binoculars, like a decent pair, not like amazing

ones but a decent pair. And I bought them just bought them the day before I took them and I lost the case. And I think it fell over the edge of the boat. And I was so upset. I thought I was gonna get in so much trouble. And I didn't. They didn't. They were like yeah, it's just the case. No biggie. You still got the still got the binoculars. That's the important part. Yeah. What else you got?

Leila

I don't know.

David

You already scrolled around?

Leila

I just I made another one note thing. Episode. Oh,

David

we've already got an idea for the next episode. We're gonna do a teaser at the end of this one.

Unknown

Maybe. So.

David

So yeah, this is one of the like, I grab, we go out and we grab website lists of facts. And sometimes you'll have a lot of the same facts on this on the on the different sites. So like you go to start reading when you're like, sharks get up and did have a 30,000 That one's already been severed.

Leila

So I think it's funny when you're swimming. If a shark is like, close to you or coming towards you, if you just like put your hand on their head, and like direct them out of the way. Most of the time, they'll get the message and they'll just keep going the way that this isn't medical device.

David

Device. This isn't a medical device.

Leila

This is an advice or device. Yes. Don't. Don't be a shark.

David

Our shows called Fun Fact Friday with Leila and David. Don't ever take anything we say as advice, financial advice or medical advice. Like we can give you advice on stuff like you know how to make your coffee tastes a little better. But um,

Leila

fun tip don't drink coffee.

David

Why not? Coffee is fabulous.

Leila

I think it's I think it's gross.

David

You just have a head good. Everything. Coffee. Oh my gosh, no, I like coffee, but like it depends on them. Yeah, it can do that. It's not it's not great for you. It's not it's not that terrible for you, but it's not great for you and especially everything in moderation. You know everything in moderation. There's some advice for you not medical advice because I only get sued. But yeah, everything everything in moderation. Yeah. Including our show.

Leila

Oh yeah. They were listening to us at the State of the Union last night. Yeah.

David

I was gonna take I was gonna take a screenshot of like when the cameras caught one of the Congress people on their phone and I was gonna like Photoshop in, you know, look like they were listening to Fun Fact Friday on a podcasting 2.0 app. That was that was the plan anyway, but I never got around to it came up here. I've been working on these, this chapter maker and shownotes maker and I've been working on some other

stuff for my other show metus pod. I've updated the website if you haven't been to in a while, we now have pod verse player for the episodes. So you actually get to see on our website some of the 2.0 features like you know, chapters, transcripts, things like that, you can see a little bit of that. And so what else we have what else we have the

Leila

tiny pores and the end of the sharks now are four are filled with gel that is sensitive to electrical signals in the water meet this is known as an electrical sense. And it makes up one of the sharks three primary senses. They use those three senses at different times to initially approach the prey. And then they smell if the price were if where they

David

were then yes. And then

Leila

the electrical signal is used for more fine scale hunting with division kicking in at the last minute only. Okay, so so they don't really visually hunt.

David

I bet when when we go and lay down those high, high capacity electrical wires at the bottom of the ocean that like super huge wires we put to go from continent to continent. I bet that messes with the sharks.

Leila

So, you know, I often think about if there's two sharks, the bottom of the ocean making a podcast about us right now.

David

Maybe, I mean, their delivery system would have to be slightly different than an RSS feed.

Leila

I hope it's a whale shark.

David

It's a whale shark. It's a whale shark and a whale. Oh, wait, no, I think a hammerhead Hammerhead is more podcast. hammerheads more in podcast,

Leila

the whale shark has headphones.

David

So you'd have to be like I gotta I gotta I gotta let me ask Chad GPD draw picture of a

Leila

hammerhead with headphones. Or headphones need a hammerhead?

David

I need a picture of a what's it called hammerhead shark with headphones

Leila

on

David

headphones.

Leila

Cat wear headphones.

David

I'll make sure this picture gets out. Oh my gosh. So the the image creation of the AI, it always you can tell that it's aI like it always has certain features. You can't be like put your finger on what it is. But you can always tell what it is. And oh my gosh is concerned with a hat on that is completely wrong. I'll try and remember to put this somewhere

where people can see it. So silly. But if you if you if you're out there and you want to draw us a picture of a hammerhead shark, with headphones on, like where you think the headphone should go on a hammerhead. We would love some art submissions. I don't like using the AI or generators for art. However, I'm not great at art. So you know that I can come up I can just get it done quick anyway. What do you like,

Leila

the giggles about my own brain? So me and my friend were on the bus today. And I was like, Oh, I'm going to IKEA soon. And she was like, you're going to be an Ikea. And I was like what was it? You're gonna like animorph into an Ikea right? And I was like, yes.

David

What? You didn't say I'm going to be an Ikea you said you're going to IKEA. What?

Leila

I'm going to be an Ikea you're

David

going to be an Ikea IKEA like, like so you're going to animorph Yes

Leila

that's what I just said.

David

That's ridiculously someone draw

Leila

me in a morphing into an Ikea please

David

Oh my gosh. That's hilarious. We're gonna I hope I hope we have somebody creative out there that can make that happen.

Leila

I will hang it on my wall. So

David

speaking of male and helping us out with the show. You can help us out by letting letting folks know that we have a fun show. Like you know tell some folks Hey, if you're ever looking for a good fun show, there's a show I know about and it's called Fun Fact Friday. Fun Fact Friday with little and David you can just go to Fun Fact friday.com It's easy to remember. And that would that would help you know help us out

a lot. Get us some new listeners get us in front of some new new folks and the more people that are out there listening, the more chance there is that Leila can get anamorphic into an Ikea please.

Leila

I would love it.

David

We speak into that we are a value for value podcast. We put the show out for free we have a great time doing the show. We do. As you can tell right Right. And we ask that if you enjoy the show if you receive value from it and only if you receive value from it, we asked for for your help, you know, help us out with art. Music we've got we've got this this this year. Leila rent and park Parker Kane helped us out with that. And, you know, we get we get some things from from

folks here and there. Time talent or treasure so if you got some time to help us out if you're talented, and come and help us out. And and then there's treasure. We did receive some treasure since our last episode, we got our monthly sustaining support from Dred Scott

Unknown

Dred Scott

David

$19.12 That's a Oreo donation was Sherry Laurie $5 and Steven Grimes $10. Those are all our monthly sustaining donations that covers our server costs, and helps us go get a little bit of ice cream every once in

Leila

a while. I'm gonna remember one day what the 1912 was Oreo donation I know I'm gonna remember one day. Oh,

David

did you forget it every day? Gotcha. And I didn't put a marker for B for me. So I'm trying something new this week with the timer's. We also received Thank you, Dr. Scott, Sherry Laurie and Steven Grimes definitely appreciate that that goes straight to our hosting company. And then we have boosts which is this little little bits of Bitcoin, which bitcoins going crazy right now, and I'm pretty excited about it. And we got a

boost from Cameron from IPFS podcasting.net. That's essentially our file host for our mp3 file, the one you're listening to right now. It's a really it's a really neat system. Go to IPFS IPFS podcasting.net. And check that out. It's really cool. We received 3333 sets from Cameron says thank you for the IPFS jingle winky face and a winky face. So Leila Do you want to do it on the show? No, no. Anybody else who wants to hear no, the jingle Oh. Oh, know he's

Leila

funny. I didn't want you to record it in the first place. Oh

David

my gosh. I mean, I could just say what it is. And you're not singing? No, no. Okay. No worries. It was just a silly little thing. Not not 100% appropriate. No. So anyway, um, yeah, so we definitely appreciate all the support we get from everybody. And you can help us out by letting folks know about the show. And maybe giving us some leads on some good guests that that'd be fun. So that's always good content when we have guests and then let's see what was the other
