Welcome to the Christmas special of Fun Fact Friday
with Leila and David. That was pretty epic. I agree. I think we did a good job. All right, that wraps it up. Y'all have a great Christmas. We'll see you next. No, no.
Happy Christmas.
Eve. We're recording this. Yeah, Christmas Eve. 2023.
I'm sorry, we couldn't get it out sooner.
Yeah, we have. We've, I literally, I literally had no voice on Friday.
I literally, I was talking like this. I can Yeah, I can only whisper. But when I had the same thing that he had laryngitis, I could either yell or whisper. Yeah,
I couldn't yell. I tried. I tried in the truck. We were we were out and about doing stuff. And I was like that's all I got out. So, um, so yeah, we're sorry, we're, you know, we're late. But folks have a lot to do during this time of year anyway. So maybe folks aren't even listening yet. So it's Christmas Eve. And we wanted to talk to y'all about some Christmas facts and some facts about some traditions. Yeah, we've got some traditions in our household. But before we go into that, we're
going to talk about some good news. Yeah, once again.
So I have a story about Wait. What do we do when? My gosh, Hello, and welcome to the Christmas edition of Fun Fact. Friday news. Welcome. I'm your lead anchor. Leila, I haven't been the lead anchor in a while. No, you haven't. I have it. So it's Christmas time. So obviously we have Christmas themed good news. And mine is about this little girl. She looks to be about maybe seven ish. And she went to the to go see Santa. And she couldn't speak to Santa because she's deaf. Or she could that's
not good news in sign. But there was an elf there that signed for her. And translated from Santa to the little girl.
That's awesome, isn't it? I like there was a story a while back. It was a big viral video. This whole town. There was a guy there that was death. And like, everybody that lives within a couple blocks of him all secretly got together and learn sign language. And then like nobody let on that they were doing that. And then one day, all of a sudden, everybody's signing at him. That's awesome. And it just was so it was like it was heartwarming. That's good stuff. I bet I need to learn
sign language. It's a good thing to learn.
I'm learning it. I'm not. I'm not very fluent in it, but I am learning it. Yeah, I've seen you. I've seen you. You had an app, right? I did have an app, but it didn't work very well. So I've just been using a website called hand speak. Okay.
Leila is also learning German and
also learning German. First, I'm way better at German than I am at sign. Yeah,
I'll be like, we'll be driving somewhere. And phage will be in the front seat. And Leila will be in the back. And we are talking. And we can't make out what she's saying. And I look back and she's like talking into our Duolingo app on our phone in German. Talking about apples and
my sister is very tall.
Alright, give us something in German. Give us something to talk about your sister being tall
is so gross. Like that's, that's the very basic stuff. Let me pull up a cool sentence that I have. That's gonna do that while I talk. Okay. She said that her her mother said that. It was very nice to have someone else signing for her and actually translating what Santa says to her. Because she got to live in the moment and she even got to like record it all happen. happening.
Right so she didn't have to do the translation. That's fantastic.
It is. Alright, so we have wall here common see here, Musial. And so the gang sufficiency though she is our expressive voice. We Valle Costa del t that he costed seven year or this is very like she saw talking about buying a shirt. So are you actually translating that? Are you just reading it? I'm reading it but I'm printing in my head. Yeah. Okay. And it's really funny because there's a show called Oh, hello OS Berlin, okay. And it's like this German
kids show and listen to some of the songs from it. I was translating in my head, and
I'm the smartest woman alive. So I did not get a new story this week. So I yeah, my good news is it's Christmas. Whereas they were celebrating or celebrated his lazy. We're celebrating Jesus's birth, which is in the Gospel, which means good news. Right. So there we go. Good news. The best news? Really? Yeah. If you're thinking about it. Traditions.
We got very clean. I was going to do it and you're like, yeah, it was like no,
one of our traditions is to always open a gift on Christmas Eve. Yeah, typically we do it at night, but we decided to do it earlier today. So bride's mom. Yeah. It's normally Phaedra. That stops us from just opening all the presents early. So I got from Leila Yeah. A cool beanie.
He got a cool beanie from me. And what I did with it is I put it inside of a mug, and then wrapped the mug mug inside of a box inside of another box,
and everything was individually wrapped. And it was fantastic. However, when I reached into the inner box, and felt a mug shape, I was like, Oh, no. I mean, I love it because it was given to me with love. But it's another mug. We have so many mugs.
He was very mad at me.
I was not mad. I was like Okay, let's see what it is. Let's see what it is before I make a judgement because it might be the coolest mug in the world. But then I opened it up and there was a beanie stuffed in it. And it's a beanie from a local pub. that a friend of mine owns called well traveled beer downtown Goldsboro if anybody's in eastern North Carolina, and yeah, hit up Goldsboro. Go see Sam. At well traveled? Yeah. Really nice guy grew up with them. Cool place to go. So that
is one of our traditions. Leila, what did you get on our traditional
I got a tapestry that I'm very excited about? That. I haven't hung up yet. Because there's nowhere for me to hang up. Yeah, our walls are pretty. Pretty packed. pretty packed. I'm here to get your help on it. Because I want to hang it on my ceiling. Oh, my gosh, what it begins? I can't reach my ceiling with my stepstool.
Yeah, we'll get out of there. No problem. Yeah, we've got pretty tall ceilings in the house. So what was the other thing he usually just uses
like three step stool to reach my walls and put stuff up.
So while I'm trying to figure out what I was doing, yeah. Why don't you tell us about one of our own traditions.
We always make cinnamon rolls on Christmas morning. And I'm sure if you're a longtime listener to this podcast, you aren't know that. But it's very fun. I always wake up very early, like at seven ish. I consider that very early, sometimes earlier, sometimes earlier. And I make I put the ball on the wall tray from the oven, and I pop into my parents room. I'm like, breakfast will be 30 minutes. Okay, and they probably go back to sleep for 30 minutes.
It takes us 30 minutes to get from the sleeping position to awake to standing.
Yeah, so that's why I pop in
lots of grunts and you know, joints popping and it get a little older. I am getting that senior discount now.
Oh my gosh.
It's so funny. So, one of the other traditions we have I make this whole episode about our traditions is that we always break a tradition. So like all of these traditions that we have of you know, decorating the tree going out to Chinese food on Christmas Day. We always break one. It's like a rule we have to break one of our traditions. We don't ever do everything every year. So that's that's a it frees us up to not feel obligated to do something if we're just really not in the
mood. So I found talking about Christmas traditions on parade.com There's an article 40 Best Christmas traditions and we're just kind of run through them real quick. Okay, are
you what? Best Christmas traditions? Yeah,
so I'm gonna run through and get your opinion on a few. I've the link is in the show notes. If you want to click it and go through start at the bottom. I'll start at the top. And we can kind of get each other's opinions. ugly Christmas sweaters.
Yeah, I'm kind of mad on that one also. It is what it is some folks like everything is just what Oh, wait. Oh are here. Sorry. It's the bottom. Yeah. Yeah,
it's not. I didn't format that one. No very well. So matching family Christmas pajamas. We've never done that. I've never done that. I don't want to kind
of lame but also good for you. It's like it's a waste of money in my opinion.
Why don't we bake Christmas cookies as a tradition?
Because they wouldn't be that great. If we got chocolate chip cookies. That'd be fine. Yeah,
Christmas cookies can be any kind of cookie. You as long as you're eating them near Christmas.
I guess. Yeah. Any
flavor can be a Christmas cookie.
I need to bake cookies for Santa.
Yeah, you do. He's gonna be upset. If you don't get cookies, I gotta
go. Grab cookie dough. Yeah, this is a premade stuff. It
works. Um, I like the have you seen I don't know if they even sell them anymore. They used to have it's like a tube. And that is just sugar cookies. And you just slice it. Oh, it has like a Christmas tree or a Santa or something like that in the middle. Those are kind of neat. And they're super easy. You just cut them and put them in the oven.
A secret Santa.
I do like savor Santa. Now. My friends did ticker Santa this year. So you're saying this without me without her call? Sad.
Like you didn't tell you this last day. So I
used to do Reddit Secret Santa until I got off of that horrible, horrible website. Yeah. That was pretty neat. Like, it had a huge system of like matching you with other people. And it was it was just neat. Like they would have a Christmas wish list. They tell you a little bit about themselves. And there you go. So I don't I don't understand and have never heard of this one. It's called hide a pickle ornament in your Christmas tree. Oh, I've
heard of that. Really? Yeah.
Okay. Oh, the first kid to find the pickle ornament on the tree gets to open one of their gifts first.
Yeah. All right. I've heard of that. I've never heard of that. And Baker yule log. What's a Yule Log? Log? Maybe you'll? I don't even know it's a. I think it's like one of those
things. I've always heard it. But I've never seen one.
Okay, let me actually look it up like cuz I'm curious. All right. How's your log? Okay. I don't have a mouse. That's throw me off. Oh, so we're just like, oh, it's like a Swiss roll. Oh, so it's just like, Oh, it's a big swiss roll. It's something I feel like I knew that a
big swiss roll. I didn't know it's called a YOLO. And maybe it's just delicious. We
should make this a tradition.
Oh my gosh. Talking about log delicious stuff. Oh, there's a new little cafe in town. I have an
idea. I have. Oh my gosh, I just had the best idea ever. Oh, wait, here we go. Okay, okay. Okay. Go. So, we take the premade cookie dough or we make cookie dough. That's edible. We can like Okay, good. We make cookie dough that's not edible. Make cookie dough that's edible. So it doesn't have like eggs in it, which is fake and I hate it. We take it and we lay it flat like in a little square. Like like a big like one foot by one foot square. Okay, and then we take some Nutella. We put it on
it and we roll it up like a Yule Log. Maintenance over Okay, okay, anyway, and then we roll it up and then we roll it up. And then we it's a Yule Log. But it's a weird yule log. And we put like that temper chocolate on it so it cracks when you cut it. Oh my gosh. I'm so smart.
If you want to spend your own money on the ingredients and do that go for it. Because I feel like it will be a failure. Oh,
what else can you put in chocolate chip cookies just chocolate gross weight
are you making chocolate chip cookies and then putting Nutella on them? No making sugar cookies. No. What are you doing then? Chocolate chip cookie dough chocolate chip cookie dough? Yes. And then roll up Nutella? Yes. And then the covered whipped cream and marshmallows. No. Okay.
You put temper chocolate on it and wait for the temper chocolate to dry so it's like a hard shell you can put like what green and cream and marshmallows and if you want I guess if you're I didn't make any of the haystacks you didn't get those are pretty good when you make them.
I gotta make a smaller Yeah, I was making them too big. haystacks are the chow mein noodles. With butterscotch. And, like, butterscotch melted onto the disgusting thing it does. But could you basically just pour chow mein noodles into the melted butterscotch and then put it in little clumps, like a little haystack. real small, like just like a little bit. I don't know how to how to explain it. Look at how delicious that looks. And yeah,
you'll log I want one now. I really want why we should like Walmart easy. They have McAfee Ledoux. Probably not. Lennar close today.
Oh, they close it. Yeah. Okay. We have a new little cafe we've been hitting up for for pastries and macarons
good stuff guess what when and
they and they make their coffee right like the fancy drinks. I got a brown sugar something rather. And it was not like stupid ridiculous sweet like you go to a lot of coffee shops and anything flavored. They put so much sweetener in it that it's like how do you feel about Secret Santa?
I just talked about wildlife. Why am I this far down on the side? Why are you at the bottom? I don't know. So So indulge in a big breakfast we do that? Well, cinnamon buns and well the thing underneath it says in those Oh, this is number 33 By the way, this magic number being dangling, indulgent, big breakfast nurses, whether you bake salmon rolls, whip up pancakes, make an omelet or make muffins make a special treat for Christmas morning.
Okay, so here's here's one that I want to get your opinion on. Okay. Visit Christmas light displays. Yeah, no, for me kinda like that, too. We do have one nearby much crap to do where they have. They have the lights synced up to the radio station. Oh, yeah. And they play Christmas music. It's a radio station, transmitting from the house. And it's a low powered door. You have to be like right in front of the house
to hear it because of regulations. But yeah. You tune in your radio to it, and the lights sync up with the music. It's really neat. But once you've seen it once or twice, you're like, seeing it. I'm so sorry about my voice. You're off. It's it sounds terrible. I know. I'm sorry. Christmas movies. What's your favorite Christmas movie? Oh,
no.
You're like elf. No. Cry National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. No. Home Alone. No. Okay. Here's a David rant. Oh, It's a Wonderful Life. Are you familiar with the story of It's a Wonderful, I
never watched it. I've never heard of the story. Okay.
So it's this old movie that everybody talks about is like, the best Christmas movie. And I'm probably gonna get some, some some bad email from this or whatever. But you know what? It's just my opinion.
It's like your opinion, man. It's a terrible story. What's the story? Okay, so
there's this guy, right? Yeah. And he's like, he works at a bank. And he doesn't like his life.
His wonderful life, though. Poached, calm
down. Oh, calm, okay. I can't go into full rant mode because of my voice. But
if you write it out, I can
hold on, pause it and write it down. He decides that he wants to, you know, check out if you know what I mean. He doesn't want to be around anymore. Yeah. Well, he gets stopped by an angel. And the angel shows him what the world would be like, if he never existed. And it goes through and it shows like all of his loved ones. Like that they're in a way worse situation. Because he's not there. And then and then he comes back and he loves his life. So like, that's the story.
And I don't know, I just don't get the appeal of saying I
don't like the Christmas story of Christmas Carol.
What I like your Christmas Carol. I know you do. There's a couple of parts that I would change. I've got notes Charles Dickens. I've got notes.
But can you go to is going to be like Charles Charles, I'm better.
I wrote you down some stuff is gonna just gonna pin it to your, your headstone here. Just to let you know, I may rewrite a play of A Christmas Carol does a couple of little changes. One thing we don't do that we probably should it is Christmas cards. We get a lot of Christmas cards, but we just don't ever sit down and write them out.
Do you donate Toys for Tots?
Um, not Toys for Tots? But we do. We do typically do some nice things for some folks. Yeah, no, we don't know. Yeah, we don't like to go into that stuff. Oh,
dang it. What? I forgot to take my photo with Santa at the mall. I had a plan. Is it open? Is it is it open? If it is we're gonna find out we're gonna find out.
What we will do what we can And to post that on our socials
unless we get it if we get it if we get it.
Yeah, so, so yeah, those are just some some cool traditions you can do. I'm trying to think of any other traditions that I've heard that
add special ornaments to your history. Oh yeah.
Our Christmas tree is only special ornaments.
No, we never we don't have any of the colored balls. We don't have any snowflakes. I don't have any basic stuff we have stuff with meaning that if you pointed that one ornament on our tree, it was like let's do this. We would explain the
story. I may not know. Yeah, but Leila well, because it was hers. Like this year we gained like three or four ornaments from the Christmas carol play we were a lot of people were giving out Christmas tree ornaments. And it's great because they had written on their you know A Christmas Carol 2023 Yeah, you got a little Yeah, a little Are you tired?
A little. I want to I want to go to bed so we can time travel tonight tomorrow. Right? I got a little what's it called? ornament. No. Photo free Wiseman thing I got what do you call it? It's just a sit around thing sit around thing. I gotta sit around thing is a three wisemen? Yeah, it's in the play. The stage crew, we had a little bit where Bob Cratchit was talking about, oh, the three wives been giving them gifts. Do you remember how we were like, We Three Kings.
And then the stage manager runs out was like no, no wrong. Play, run, play. That's next week.
Give an ad for the child of promise. Right.
So that was fun. Yeah. So I have had multiple people. Yes. And I'm doing it because it's Christmas. I may release a better version later. But I've had multiple people request that I read Luke two from the Bible about the Christmas story. And I'm going to pause the recording, clear my throat and come back with the Christmas story. Pasta, the birth of Jesus from Luke two. In those days, Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken at entire Roman world. This was the first census
that took place while Cornelius was governor of Syria. And everyone went to their own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem, the town of David. Luke has he belonged to the house of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born. And she gave birth to her
firstborn son. She wrapped him in clothes, and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping lots of their flocks by night. And angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shown around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David, a Savior has been
born to you. He is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be assigned to you, you will find a baby wrapped and close and lying in a manger. Suddenly, a great company of the heavenly hosts appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest heaven and on earth peace to those on whom his favorite rests. When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, this ever said to one another. Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which our
Lord has told us about. So there you go.
I have a mic down. I hold my voice as best. Yeah, you did really good. Thank you. I was I was editing the
Yes, I like you're just trying to me because the OneNote is like flickering and changing screen while I'm reading. But if anybody wants me to read more of that, or any particular verse of the Bible, I know people like my voice, not to Yeah, not to toot my own horn but people have told me Well, people have told me that they liked it. If nobody ever told me I wouldn't be saying this. But I am definitely willing to read a I'll read
things for you if you need it if you need it. Yeah. So hopefully when my voice is better Alright, so we are out I think we're gonna start wrapping it up. We're gonna get get this posted, and we're gonna run into town and pick up a capital A
