Hello, hello. Welcome to Fun Fact Friday Fun Fact Friday. I missed it. I missed the queue. Fun Fact Friday is a weekly show where we discuss the topics groaning, or we discussed back surrounding a different topic each week. I'm David. I'm Lila's dad, and that is neat. The one that's not the dad. Leila, yeah. All right. So what are we talking about this week? of the day, the Dead The Day of the Dead? Because we have been we've done Halloween before? I think so

coming out right before Halloween. So even the day that it is after Halloween, right. But that's fine. That's fine. It still all happens within the week after the release of this episode. So yeah, so that's our that's our topic for this episode. But first, we'd like to start off with our supporters. This is a value for value podcast, and we put out the show for free everything's for free. And we hope it provides some value to you. And if you do find value in it, consider returning

some value. We need t shirt ideas, which we got one this week, we'll talk about that in a minute. We need music, any any musicians out there want to help us out. And then we also need financial support not need all these things are wants but uh, but the financial support helps us out with going to get an ice cream and paying the server bills. So yep. And our numbers have been picking up again. Yeah, we're getting getting more

and more listeners. Hi, all you new listeners out there. Drop us a line and say hi on Twitter. Fun Fact, Friday one, please. Or, at Fun Fact, Friday at social media.com for the feta, verse fediverse, Mastodon Pleroma, those sorts of things, or just plain old mail at FunFactFriday.com. Indeed, one note, before we started with the support section, I sent an email to K. And I wanted to make sure that que received the email because I have been having some issues on sending emails from

one of our mail servers. So maybe check the spam folder. If you have not, if you haven't received it. So yeah, so our supporters this week, we have $5 in the Pay Pal from Curtis that's a monthly sustaining donation that pays for one of our servers that we run that actually that almost covers the live server. Almost like Right, right. Right there the live server. You can listen live some Thursday nights. We're going to try and maybe put a calendar up.

So probably the first and third Thursdays will be streaming. Okay, so yeah, most likely first and third Thursdays or also the fifth Thursday depending on the other month plans. We're going to try and stream live other weeks we may do it Wednesdays just keep follow us on Twitter mastodon. We may do a site redesign or hop on our Discord. If you need our Discord info just get in touch with us and we'll get you on there. So yeah, we are our supporters. Besides Curtis Curtis was the only one

that came in on PayPal. We had a boost from bareness Love and Light for 333 SATs. 33 is a magic number and you just stick that extra three on there. It was from the last episode random stuff where we kind of just we didn't prepare at all we just kind of get in front of the mics and talk about that it was fun. We had a good time. Had a really good time and the pre and post shows on the

live stream. And the the message was fountain kept crashing at 13 minutes and seven seconds just when Leila was exclaiming all Yeah, explain all the political ads. Your message is a threat to them. And laughing sideways emoji. Keep not prepping your professional podcasters we can talk we can get in front of a mic and talk for 30 minutes on pretty much anything. That being said, talking about being professional podcaster I need to cough cough cough cough. All right.

Great, good cover could have played like some super loud clip or just kept your mic on clips directly into your mic. That's it for the treasure part of the donations and then we have some folks who sent us time in the way of sending us correspondence via email or snail mail. You can oh you can send us snail mail at PO Box 145 Live Pikeville, North Carolina 27863 that's on our website. And if you go to the donations tab, you don't have to send us a donation to the mailbox, you can

send us whatever you'd like. I do screen everything before Leila, you know, Caesar anything. So? Because we know Okay, all right. But I'm still in the car when you open everything. So yeah. So that. Let's see, we got the letter from Kay, we'll go over that in a second. Because the whole thing I just want to say, Why do you have your OneNote online mode? Oh, okay. We use OneNote for our show notes back and forth, just because you don't already know this. If you don't already know

this, and I've got two versions of OneNote. Apparently. And if you're using the OneNote for Windows 10. Yeah, which is a completely different layout than the actual Office version of OneNote. The actual Office version of OneNote is better for

my meatus pod stuff, the way it's laid out. And that one is fine, for the Fun Fact, Friday, because we're kind of just clipping stuff and throwing it in there to keep ourselves reminded and to have a place to grab the show notes from but this one is better for the real serious organizational stuff I have to do for for me just plug keeping all the credits aligned and all that stuff. So yeah, I don't really use OneNote more than just the podcast. I do

have a reference book for a costume that I'm making. But I wonder it's a super super handy program. Yeah. And it's a it comes free with Windows. So I do have the paid version, but it depends on what you're doing. So that's that's a little behind the scenes stuff right there for how we produce but we got a letter I hope it's okay, an email. I hope it's okay that we read this aloud on the show. I don't see anything. Anything, but it's from Team Omaha. Why don't you go ahead. Try it

there. It's on the No, it's it's on the one that it's right in front of you. Oh, where's it? Right here? Yeah. Oh, is it in fact finders Okay. I've been meaning to send you a couple of photos from a cave Tori took a while ago we took a tour of a Wind Cave while in customer Park of South Dakota. The darkness in which they shut off the lights was incredible. The one photo shows a section of the ceiling called Box worth where it looks like a cardboard

sections. There. The other shows crystals that look like popcorn. Cheers, Team Omaha. Oh, my gosh. Wait, I want to get popcorn daily. Yeah, they're pretty neat. pretty pictures from okay, we love getting pictures from y'all like, just like places you've been and, and cool stuff you've seen that kind of either relates to the show or doesn't we just you know, we like getting mother's it's neat. Speaking of letters, we got two things in the mailbox this week.

Yeah, here. I do want to read this one. Yeah, I'll read this one already read over it while you read this one. This one? Okay. Yeah, read that one. So we got one that wasn't from K. So that's pretty exciting. Okay, so let me say, Dear meet US media. This is a friendly reminder that your post office box or caller service renewal fee is due. If you have already paid this fee. This notice continued business service. If you have not yet. Please do so.

Good. Yeah. I will stick that in the to do bin on my desk, which is just, you know, wherever it'll go. And now to the real mail. This is from Kay, this is from Wow, that means we've had our box for two years now. Wow. Wow. That's interesting to me. So if we're doing a podcast for more than two years, two and a half give or take, because we started what in April or May of 2020 when everybody was starting their podcasts so this this is one of my I love this topic. Case and

this letter. And just in time for Halloween was perfect. And it says mass panic. Oh, it's got a it's got a picture of a dapper looking gentleman on the back. So the first thing I saw was and startled me you'll see who it is in just a second. October 30 2014 was the first day that me this pod was released. Now that's not what it says. But it does say October 30 1938 was on a Sunday, just

like it is this year. That evening, Americans turned on their radios to listen to their primetime shows the night before Halloween. Excuse me. The night before Halloween, millions were about to get the scare of their lives thanks to a 23 year old radio producer named Orson Welles that's who the dapper gentleman is on the picture. His live adaptation of the world the world's was not expected to be well received. Cast and crew thought he had come up with a boring, terrible script. They

expected it to be to just put the audience to sleep. But the story of a Martian invasion in the form of breaking news reports scared the dickens out of many, 6 million people were listening to the live broadcast. And it's estimated that over a million people believed it was real. Many of those people may not have tuned in after the play. Oops, sorry. Many of those people may have tuned in after the play had started, and

thought they were listening to adult musical presentation. 10s of 1000s of people were alarmed by the news of an alien invasion called their local police, newspapers and radio stations asking if it was true, and volunteering their help to fight the aliens. No, get them get your shot gun. You're gonna be driving Reggie Ford, the CBS studio where the broadcast was being produced received more calls than their switch switchboard could handle.

You know switchboard is? Sure. You don't know what it's talking about. It's kind of cool. After the first half hour orders were given by higher ups to make an announcement that it was just a fictional story. Shortly after that policeman began to trickle into the studio into the room was full of staff. And the room was full and staff struggled to keep them from interrupting the show. Orson Welles apologized for the panic at a news conference that following morning on Halloween Day.

already viewed as a brilliant young producer and actor, this production of War of the Worlds made him a household name. Three years later, he made the movie Citizen Kane regarded as one of the best films in American cinema. 2003 Orson Welles production of The War of the Worlds was one of the first 50 recordings to be added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress. I love that story. I love it when people like tuned in. And you know, back when people trusted

the news, and it's like, oh, no, this is on the news. It must be true. But yeah, I can I can imagine a bunch of bunch of Americans all right. Yeah, let's go get him. Speaking of aliens, NASA's now they got their team together for investigating the IKEA. Tennis. Oh, yesterday. Oh, yeah. It's, uh, interesting stuff. Interesting time to live. As they say, but yeah, I like the whole Orson Welles thing. I'm a fan of The War of the Worlds anyway. So yeah, but thank you,

Kay. As always, and yeah. Let's see. Oh, you got to get back to your studio stories. Where see where professional podcasters all these airs? Yeah. Oh, yeah. Good. Oh, bless you. Welcome to the good news segment. Starring me and him this time him to me this time. All right. Tell us about some good news. Leila. This is bad cat. I'm a cat person. Cat who sneaks into school gets his class photo taken and a portrait packet sent home to mom. Oh, my goodness.

A cat performs the most head scratching stunt at Wales. Recently on class picture day leaving a group of proud moms and floods of laughter. 10 and seven year olds Megan and Chloe Roberts were all dressed up and excited to have their picture taken with Drewery primary school. But their excitement couldn't compare with that Ziggy their orange cat, their orange a white cat who regularly visits the school. When Ziggy the honorary student felt it was his turn. The sick the four year old

effortlessly jumped up into the photo chair. It looks straight at the camera. Got his snap and promptly left. I love this story. Yeah, that's cute. Be sure unclip that picture. I will. If you're listening after chapters had been completed, then you'll see a picture of what was the guy's name? Maybe Ziggy was a mittens. Basic name, right? Yeah, it's cute. No offense. If your cat's name Minh. Yeah, you can you can have a basic name get no problem. Like it's like phyto Oh, sorry

about that. I was playing some Baby Metal before we started. Yeah, and left your sounds on we gotta turn your windows sounds off. So my new story is kind of kind of fun. I've heard of this before. It's called the ignoble prize. Okay. If you're not familiar, wait, like IG IG. So I like I guess, Nobel Prize. I guess it's a Nobel Prize winner prize. We're now Last, the prizes were announced and we have, oh, if you're unfamiliar with the ignoble awards they've been

going on for a while. It's not to be confused with a Nobel Prize typically announced in early October in Oslo, Norway, instead, the ignoble prize is for is to honor a quote, sorry, honor achievements that first make people laugh, and then make them think, in quote. So the winners for the hmm, the 32nd first annual ignoble prize, the 32nd first annual wait just yet, just let it happen. I gotta write this down. All right.

We have for Applied cardiology, a team of researchers in the Czech Republic for research that confirmed that when new romantic partners meet for the first time and are attracted to each other, their heart rates synchronize. For literature, researchers in Canada, the US and UK and Australia for conforming the poor that poor writing and not specialized concepts are what make legal documents unnecessarily difficult to understand. So it's not like when people say, Oh, it's just

legal mumbo jumbo. It's not because it's legal mumbo jumbo. It's because the lawyers are bad writers. They're not good at putting things in the right. It's funny because they talk for a living. But anyhow, for biology, a pair of researchers from Brazil and Colombia on whether whether and how constipation affects the meeting prospects of scorpions. What I would study these people get paid for this. For medicine. What we're going to hear a little bit with you cuz I'm conducting my keyboard. Sorry.

I muted that channel. All right. For medicine, a team of researchers in Poland for demonstrating that when patients undergo some forms of toxic chemotherapy, they suffer fewer harmful side effects when ice cream replaces one component of the procedure. Really, so ice cream, instead of whatever chemical they normally gave, for one part of the treatment makes them suffer less harmful side effects. Good ice cream, Nothing beats ice cream. I'm except for for the lactose intolerance.

I know. I laugh at your MS for June. I really okay. There is a local store here that sells ice cream. And oh my goodness, there's oat milk ice cream. And it tastes like heaven. It's pretty good as I gotta say, it's pretty. It is really good. Especially when you like eat all of it, ya know? So, for engineering, I got two more real quick for engineering Japanese researchers who worked to discover the most efficient way for people to use their fingers when turning a knob.

Yep, I love this. See, that's why you don't chop out the silence. They they were they spent money and time researching the most efficient way to use your fingers to turn a knob. They they took time and and money. And they figured out what's that place? So it's around here, Japan. Now what? Oh, I thought you were asking where they did that research. What I was so pleased that we passed by and we commented on how many chemicals they made. Oh,

bass of BASF. Yeah, that's what they do in a bass If man Oh, yeah, they're doing the research for the knob turning I think they have to do something with soy is soybeans. Soy sauce, soy sauce, maybe who knows? For peace, the International, an international consortium of researchers who developed an algorithm to help gossipers decide when to tell the truth and when to lie. They came up with an algorithm. So when you're gossiping, it'll tell you

when you should lie when he should tell the truth. Get little earpiece. Yeah. Little Bluetooth ear. Lie. True thick lie about this. Live at this now. All right. That was a long, loose new segment longer than we've had in a while but I just had to get through all those. Some of those were funny. So Boris Johnson resigned as the UK Prime Minister. Yeah, it was a little while ago. Oh, were you aware of this?

Well, it only hit to my attention yesterday, but I knew I knew that he was but I just like I just realized yesterday. Well, they had this this new chip. I think it was Kim. Kim trust I think came in and she was only there for like 45 days. She got appointed by the Queen. Two days before the Queen passed, and then she only lasted like 45 days in office or something. And now they got a new guy. On my channel real quick. Oh, your audio channels. Your Bluetooth. Okay, it's up. All

right. I just wanted to Boris Johnson first like it's not playing. Yeah. Do you ever know I've got the I've got the Bluetooth turned on. Are you connected to Bluetooth? Yeah, I have a thing on. I don't know. I don't know what to say. Is it playing through your headphones? No, I don't know. It's fine. We'll figure that out later. Sorry. So the only funny actual topic of the show 20 minutes later. Yeah, finally. So yeah, the Day of the Dead is a celebration. It's not just a

celebration of life. It's a celebration of life and those who have passed. It is definitely not a sad occasion. While the holiday is focused on those who have passed away, Dia de Muertos is a joyful occasion. It's a true celebration of life marked by costumes makeup, festive foods, parades, humor, decorative tributes to the dead so Okay, first of all, but I just want to do that I got on to corpse paint. Be funny. Do the sugar skull. Yes. Yeah, the Do you know where that

originates? No, that's one of my fun facts. One of the most recognizable symbols is like a tree now which is what the sugar skulls are based off of. Dog doing what a dog doing? Like making so much noise? Yes, he is. He is right outside the door to our core quote unquote studio. I think my own joke. So lot Calavera Katrina, I'm gonna the pronunciation of these things I'm going to try but originated in 1913 etching by Mexican artist Jose Guadalupe Posada. The original depiction

showed a skeleton in a large hat. Katrina was later given a body by Mexican painter Diego Rivera. Rivera, who portrayed her as a central figure in his 1947 mural. Here we go. Suneo de una tajdid Domina Sol in LA Alameda Central or dream of the Sunday afternoon along central Alameda, which can be seen in the Diego Rivera mural Museum in Mexico City. And that's kind of the basis of a lot of the sugar skull makeup. Is this Katrina character that was created for the deal of it. Don't be cool.

What would be cool? Okay, so spirit week next week. Okay. And November 1, which is one of the days of the dead, right? I think it's November 1 and second. We have pajama day and I have skeleton pajamas. Okay, so I can wear the skeleton pajamas and then do sugar school and then face paint, go for it. Whatever. Yeah, so it is customary to wear the Katrina style makeup and

costumes on the data does celebrations. It goes back. Want to say let's see what was that other page saying goes back around 2000 years, give or take the roots of the day the dead run deep and Mexican history and date back to the days before the Spanish conquest. Pre Columbian civilizations had a variety of celebrations aimed at honoring the dead. So basically, it's a big party to honor those who have passed. And they have a lot of traditions like I know you've got some some facts over there.

Like they go and they clean the gravestones and decorate them of all of their past relatives and loved ones. I think it's such a cool holiday, and celebration. It's great to celebrate people's lives. We learned about it in art class on Tuesday, I think because we made prints of sugar skulls for like a one day thing because we were just ended a project but we just drew it out and then we

like stenciled it onto Styrofoam paper. Right and then just like put ink on it and on paper and the roll it you know? Yeah. Yeah, that's what you're saying. Yeah. It was fun. It was a good project. Okay, so to make a distinction day that is not Halloween. Halloween is has a whole origins and all this stuff. Is a it's a it's a big celebration. Now. They had a movie as a James Bond movie called Spectre. Okay. And they had a big parade in the

movie. And it was a day that parade and it was a mix Go city and it was like this big huge set piece and all this stuff out on right? It didn't happen. There wasn't a parade in Mexico City. There's never been a day of the dead parade in Mexico City. But a bunch of tourists came in after the movie was released. I was like, when is the parade? What is the parade?

And they were like, we don't have a parade. So it was that the next year they did so they started the parades, oh my goodness, Mexico City because of the movie and tourists were like, not demanding it, but they were you know, wanting, wanting it. But now everybody's upset because not everybody. It does have its critics because they're like, you know, you're over commercial commercialization of it. And it's like, yeah, that's that's what the folks want. You know, yeah, have a big parade go

for it brings in folks brings in money to the city. But, you know, I can see the other side of it too, because it's supposed to be a more personal sort of thing, but everybody's gonna do their thing. The offender is a central component. What is that the offender is often the most recognized symbol of Dia de los Muertos. This contemporary art altar is a way for families to honor their loved ones and provide them what they need in

their journey. They placed down pictures of the deceased along with items that belong to them and object that served as a reminder their lives. Every friend also includes four elements water, wind, Earth, and fire. Water isn't the left picture so that spirits can quench their thirst, popular pizza dough, or traditional paper banners are present in the wind. Earth is represented by food, especially bread, candles are often left in the form of a cross to represent the cardinal

directions so the spirits can find their way you go. I think that's super cool. Yeah, the barbell picado, the perforated paper that you're talking about. They're like everywhere. It's a very thin paper, and it represents the delicate nature of life. And the perforations in the tissue allow, allow the souls to pass through for their visit. Is they the tradition is that the spirits come to visit on the day the dead. So that's why they had the big party. It's like, hey, you know, I haven't seen you

since last year, if anything? Yeah. So sugar skulls are a big part of it. I'm sure you've all seen those. I think didn't they have a whole movie about the Day of the Dead? Is a cartoon, right? Yeah, yeah, I remember. I loved it. What was it called? Oh, Coco. It was one of those. Yeah, I think it was Coco Yeah, there you go song and I like the Calavera or skull is a central image and Dia de

Muertos. And one key element of every celebration is the sugars call these decorative candies are placed on the ofrenda as an offering to the dead, and they are given out as treats. I like treats. Me too. Oh, I'm gonna tell them what I made last night. Oh, they're so good. We bought some like candy in the Book of Life treat making stuff. And I had some white chocolate morsels. And I had some of those

Spanish peanuts, the ones with the skin on them. And I melted the chocolate Leila melted the chocolate morsels down white chocolate morsels. And I took these little mini cupcake. Paper, cupcake. Paper Paper. Yeah, thanks. And I put me four or five peanuts in the bottom of each one. And then she poured them the white chocolate over them. And then I put a peanut or two on top of each one. And then we put just a like a light

dusting of chocolate. Well, chocolate coke. Well, well, some of them got a little extra because we Okay, so we had the sister in his hand, right? And I was putting the cocoa in it. And then I I kept my spoon there. But he was just sitting around. He didn't really care. So he hit my spoon. Yep. And it kind of kind of fell. Yeah, there was one or two that had a whole lot of chocolate powder.

Anywho yeah, anyways, we're really good. Really good. Yeah, it was just, I mean, it's just white chocolate and peanuts, essentially. So I like four of them can't go wrong with that. But yeah, so another thing that they put on the offer and this is marigolds, ooh marigolds are a orangish yellowish flower that are very fragrant. We use them to get rid of mosquitoes, their natural mosquito repellent. But like I said, it's got a very strong scent. And the marigolds are meant to attract the spirits

back to their living relatives homes. Cool. So here's a funny story. When I was about your age, maybe a little younger, your nana planted some marigolds in the front yard of our house to keep the mosquitoes away. Right. So we're gonna go sit on the porch and hang out and she sprayed them regularly, like every other day. Erso with a product called Miracle Gro Okay, the instructions on the Miracle Gro said, like spray every couple of weeks, because it's like as like a super fertilizer.

Yeah. So these marigolds, which are supposed to be max like 12 inches high, right? Yeah. grew over three feet tall. The weight of the marigolds was too much so they were falling over. So we had to take a piece of string and like wrangle them all into the, my goodness, where they would stand up. I gotta make sure you're now listen to this part. But no, she thought she thought oh, it's just you just pray everyday with this stuff. And it grows but she just kept spraying them.

Okay, might she is like a plant with Burr. She can bring every everything you give to her to life. Yeah, if it's completely dead kick my rental life. Yeah, she's got one living plant cell left. You can give her a plant that you've killed from neglect, or, you know, non good knowledge of how to keep the plant alive. You can give it to her and two weeks later, you can get it back. It's like perfect. She's got a green thumb. She got a really green thumb. And she'll

be like, Oh, I just want her to know. It's like, no, no, you did some some magic. Yeah, she's she did something special with this cookie. But yeah, the Day of the Dead is a really neat celebration. Really neat tradition. And I like it. I like it a lot. And we're gearing up for Halloween. I've got another I've got an episode of Mitas pod coming out. And it is not for real young kids. I think maybe 14 or older we find it's actually a classic

story. Most people read it in school. It's called to build a fire by Jack London. And it's not a full cast or anything like a lot of my shows are it's just me reading the story. And it's like 4045 minutes long. In my English class. We are already reading A Christmas Carol it ain't even Halloween that's why I'm saying Christmas carols A good one is did you know I did an episode of of that for me just know you were in it. I was Christmas

coming back up. Yeah, we got to start somewhere. Right. But did you have any more facts about data then? I do but I think you already said yeah, there's many most of the facts sides have the same same couple of facts on this one. Yeah, it's because he you know, they do what they're like, hey, this person already has facts about I could just return we could do they don't even reward at all Oh, no. Yeah, they're just like paste the same thing and like change up the font.

They've got I was while I was digging around for this. I found a website that does AI news articles. All the news articles on the site are written by artificial intelligence. So yeah, that's probably good. headed there. Oh, talking about food. I had egg drop soup for dinner. Talk about data dead foods. In addition to sugar skulls, another food that is a Day of the Dead favorite is, let's see. Pan de muertos. It's a bread at the sprinkled with sugar and

topped with bone shape decorations. And other pockets of money. Yep. No other explanation. Other Other popular Mexican dishes served the occasion include tortilla soup chalupas, tamales, and caramel flan. Lon however you want to say it. I want to have a traditional Mexican Chiluba. Oh, yeah, I bet that'd be really good. Go for it. I've only had like the Taco Bell. We know some folks who can cook traditional Mexican food Yeah, I know some folks

there was there was a new to the fair. It was making like Mexican tacos and oh my goodness. Oh, yeah, those are pretty good. Those are pretty good. And a lot of fat in them but like flavor. All right, folks, I think that's gonna be it for this week. And unless Leila had anything else, no, no, all good. All right. Well, everybody have a fantastic weekend. Hopefully we'll be live next week. That will be the I don't have a calendar in front of me. Fourth third, November 3 2020 to around
