Hello. Hi, and welcome to Fun Fact Friday with Leila and David. So what do we do here? We read facts. We tell you that we talk. You listen to us tell you facts, and then you tell us facts. And yeah, you can tell us. Fact Friday, next Friday. Fun Fact Friday, fun mail. Mail. I fun fact. friday.com Send us your fax. So how you doing tonight? Yep. Good. Oh, wait, here we go. Let's let's go back to the old school. So Leila, what's our topic this evening?
Well, musical instruments odd musical instruments, not your run of the mill not like a guitar. I just got ready to just go. Oh, my goodness, I do have some weird instruments. Yeah, we're so we got this suggestion from Team Omaha. Got an email him a couple of suggestions. And we thought this one would be super fun. The other ones for later dates. So interesting. Instruments is what we're gonna be talking about on this episode. I have three, we have three gonna be playing for
you. She kind of collects, oh, whatever happened here? The thumb harp that you have? I have it. Oh my gosh, I think I can go look, I can hold down the fort while you go grab it. Yeah. So don't drop that, because it'll be loud. Okay, so we like to start off the show with our support section. We are a value for value podcast, which means that we put out the show for free, everybody should be able to enjoy. Enjoy the show without
having to pay anything. But and, and on the flip side of that, if you get any value from the show, if you enjoy it, put a number on that and just send it back to us either money for you found it. It's out of tune. To that will help us out with our server costs and getting the gear and going out like we got we got a boost which we'll talk about in a minute. And that paid for our ice cream last night we went out and had. So that's pretty exciting. And yeah, we do. We have a donations page at
FunFactFriday.com. And we also do the podcasting 2.0 value for value streaming of Satoshis. We got a donation from a monthly sustaining donation from Steven Grimes $10 every month for as long as we can remember. Steven Grimes has definitely paid for a lot of the equipment in this room over the last couple of years. We've been going what two and a half years now. Give or take. Wow. Yeah, that crazy. Yeah. Wow. Definitely. Definitely. Thank you, Steven. And then we have some boosts. We
got one. From all those. Let me scroll back here. I'm in the Hello Pat app. We got this one from servo servos hanging out in the chat right now. Actually, we're live in the chat right now. Oh, yep. Leila is not in the chat for this episode. We got 33,333 SATs. Wow. Yep. That's how we paid for our ice cream. Oh, yeah. Thank you. And so that ice cream turbo says haven't boosted y'all enough. And he used I don't know what that icon is. Boosts boosts CLI got it. And then that was not
attached to an episode. But then we have 333 sets from bareness, love and light and this is a very important boost. Is it so it says I'm Australian. Oh my goodness. I give it to you to Livestream on Thursday and still be Fun Fact Friday. So it's official. We have somebody who least one person Yes. Listen, live on Friday. Amazing. So there we go. That that legitimizes our, our reasoning, streaming live, streaming live. And then we got a no message boost of 500 sets
from Mitch. It just says Mitch. I could be wrong. But it I'm pretty sure it's Mitch from pod verse because it was boosted from pod verse and Mitch is the creator of pod verse. So, services Joe, Japan would also work so if we have any Japanese listeners because I think they're the same time so let us know we'd love to hear from you. If you're we love hearing from everybody. But yeah, if you're in a country Other than the
United States, we'd love to hear from where you're from. Just you can literally just send an email that says the name of where you are. Like, we know how see that or something. First thing, Where's where's Tallahassee? Florida? Hey, go. Yeah. Yeah, kinda like, kind of like another country because I live in America that they don't teach us geography that much. Yes. But how much of what you learn is in school and how much is not? Like 50%? Right, right. So
you, you figure stuff out. You're okay. You're pretty good at self study. But yes, those are our boosts for this past week. And let's hope that's a test for me for my other podcast, which there's a new episode of meet a spot out as not for kids as some adult themes. But check that out at me just pod.com or your favorite podcasting 2.0 app. So let's get on with the News for the week. Okay, you ready? Yeah. Did you not get a new story? I did. Okay. All right. The plant did anyone. Go for it?
And now, the good news segment with me, and I think I think he's come here. A plant dating pop up has appeared in London to help Brits find their perfect planner. The only plants planners that a partner I guess, the only plants club matchmaking service has been set up to marry the public with the with the perfect house plan to suit their lifestyle and personality. It gives them the opportunity to know what house plan love interests before
getting too involved in taking one home. Taking place with a lucky firm, Lucky club, Mayfair, the event was created after a study found 78% of adult take their time researching their options before committing to a new relationship, or the House plan. This is a very cool concept to me. I like it a lot. Yeah, your nana grows lots of interesting plants. No, no, not really. I mean, plants, their plants. She has vine that she has been growing is some kind of some kind of vine anyway, it
just keeps growing and growing and growing. She keeps cutting pieces off and giving them to people as this really pretty thing and she wraps it around like little poles and like it's tomato. No, it's it doesn't it doesn't have any fruit. But if we took all of the pieces that she's cut off, ever, it would probably be like 500 feet long. Well because she can stretch it from her front window all the way out into her backyard. And
that's an she trims it quite regularly. So yeah, it's neat. I can't grow I'm bad at growing plants I forget about them or overwater. Okay them I'm okay, so Oh back back to the news he died. Speaking of plants, being of plants, the UK
is buzzing over B bus stops. I Love Bees and an effort to help out important insects like bees and butterflies bus stops across the UK and Europe are getting living roofs small gardens on busstop shelter roofs are being planted with flowers chosen to help support struggling insects called B bus stops or was was I gotta get like the do rimshot thing going on. Wait Do you Do you have it you had it like when you first got the road? Yeah,
the road it has it on there. But once you remove it you can't get it back now and it's not saying it's not saying but yeah, they they basically just put the the grass and flowers on top of bus stops and then you know the bees get up there and get the pollen and do the whole bee thing and little butterflies flying around. It's really neat. Cool. I like the idea. I really don't like what don't you like wasps? Yes. Well, whilst we're okay. Yellow Jackets. Yeah, paper loss.
However, have I told the story on here about getting stung? No, we're like, I think you have. It's been on. Sorry. Oh, it's been a long time to have. So I was turning the propane on the grill on and when I reached underneath the to turn the little handle, you know, to turn the camera on. I got stung by five yellow jackets at the same time. It hurts so bad and I had no idea if I was allergic. So I had to go run in and like I wrapped a piece of string or rope or something around my hand
to keep it from in case I was allergic. I didn't want it like Yeah, yeah, so it was bad. It hurt it hurt real bad. Luckily, I'm not allergic. So where I was going with the story is we have a whole bunch around her school. And while we're outside, okay, so our school, we have three buildings, we have the office building, which has all the office stuff has the office and the nurse and the counselor and all that stuff. And then we had the school
building, which is the grades, obviously. Then we have the other building, which is the gym, the locker room and the cafeteria. And when we're coming out from the cafeteria to go back to our main hall, there's like wasps everywhere. And they follow us. And they have chosen me as the person to follow because I'm very brightly colored. You do your flower. Hello. You do wear bright colors in school? Yes, I do. So anyways, anyways, anyway. Boys was your instruments?
Well, before we do that, I didn't finish the value for value segment. You didn't doesn't have to be. It doesn't have to be money is what I was gonna sell. You started talking about donations for money, and it helps us with things. But it can be like our suggestion we got for the topic. We are always looking for topics every day. Yes. And that's fantastic. When we get topics. Thank you so much team Omaha. We've also gotten, we have we have a shirt store, I just have to go finish setting
up the store on Threadless. It's ready to go. I just have to go in and make sure that I've got the payments set up right and all that. And I had been working on me this pot all week, so I didn't get around to it. But yeah, that should be up. I'll be posting it on our socials. And any ideas for shirts, something from the show that was memorable for you? Just send it along and we'll get we'll get an artist on it. In time, talent or treasure, anything you want to send us we would love it. We love
engagement with our listeners. Yep. You're our producers also. So we appreciate it. I know I do so on with odd instruments when I started looking up odd instruments. A lot of the YouTube videos were things that we have at the house. Yeah, because I'm an instrument. Kind of kind of guy. So I have like four here. So which one you want me to play for us? Why don't we start with the egg? The egg this one? Yes. Okay, so this is the first thing that comes up on Amazon if you
search up weird instruments or odd instruments. This is the atomic tone. I'm sure you've probably heard of it. It sounds sounds odd. Which I guess is what we're going for. But I'm gonna step back a little bit. Yeah, it's kinda loud. So, okay, I'm gonna have you back here. So you can still hear me kinda. Did you see what it's called? Yes. It's called an automaton. Okay, go ahead, play it. So we got I can't play anything on it because they don't really
get a little closer. So what this thing is look looks like is a musical note. With a real long stem. I don't know what the stem is called on a musical note. And the the bottom of it has like a little face on it. Yeah, usually they have like two little eyes. And the part that you squeeze has a little mouth. But this one's a good one. So it has a face on it. Yeah, it looks like it's singing. When you squeeze it, the mouth opens. And that's when it actuates the synthesizer
at a Barnes and Noble. Yep. So it's kind of a weird place to find a musical instrument. She hasn't practiced with it at all. She just plays with it. I just played. I haven't seen people play them though. Yeah, I have to there's a cover artists on artists, I guess. Like you too. So that's an automaton Those are fun. They're pretty cheap too. So go ahead with the next one. That's actually mine. This is actually his. It came up when I was searching for one of
the other ones. But this is the stylophone. So if a brown is on, let me turn it down a bit. I don't want to blow your ears out. All right, let me so if you can turn it up, there's a volume on it. Yeah. And you can change. You can kick it up or down an octave. Yeah. What this one is, is a small little box that looks like it's from what the 60s maybe 70s as an amp. Right. It looks like a guitar amp with a little keyboard but all the keys are square and metal and has a stylus attached to it.
And we're gonna make this weird noise touch the tip of the stylus which is metal, and it's got a wire, it creates the synthetic tones. And it's fun to play with. And some people can really jam on him. And one of the cool things about it is has headphones out or line out. Yeah, so you can actually hook it up to, you know, to record it and or listen on your headphones. So you're not annoying the whole family. Yeah, as I was doing when I first got it. Don't worry. Next,
hold on just a second. I've got a link. I don't know what this this is gonna be. Okay, here we go. This is the this is the automaton? jamman Yeah, yes. I can make it, I can do that. I can make it go oh my gosh, it's like you're in the video. I gotta grab a link to that. Put in the show notes. So amazing. I'm amazing. All right. Next, I got a link for that in the show notes now. Thank you for that. Servo Thank you. So. So this guy, this guy's a little interesting. So
it's like a piano. It's like a keyboard. It's about maybe a foot, foot and a half long. Give or take. But it's it's pink. Because I chose the pink option. It has a tube. And it has a mouthpiece on the tube. You see where I'm going with this. So you have to you have to blow into it to make it noise. So here it is without blowing into it. Very tasty. And here it is actually playing it I don't know how to play piano used to play a song or what did you What did you just play on
that I don't remember, I used to play fallen down. So it's like, it's like a keyboard, like a keyboard. But an accordion. Like without having to move it back and forth you blow into it. And the wind from your from your face goes in and you know hits the reeds. And then one of the very interesting key or pressing you know makes fun fact when I first got this, I press down this little button back here which is the spit outtake. And I haven't used it
before, so I pressed it down too hard. So I broke it. So I had to superglue it back together before even using it. Did you say this was called the melodica? Yes. Oh you didn't. I didn't. So she got that when she went when she wanted one. I was looking for the cheapest one we could get right I was like, it was like 16 but it was like 16 or 18 bucks. And then I started looking into it. And the more expensive ones. They only go up to like 2000 $3,000 for like the most expensive like sought after
or whatever. While we watched a video of somebody who has just gone all in on melodica he has just gone brand his whole is his whole brand has given up on everything else. He has all melodica all the time. And he did a comparison between the $20 one the exact one Leila has accepted different color. Yeah, it was like versus the $3,000 one and he played them without showing on the screen which one he was playing and you could literally not tell the difference.
So mother is here. She wants to play something. Oh, she can she can she's got a little town so you might as well be beta. Like we got here. She did. She said words. Yeah, she that's the word. That's what the third time she's ever been heard on the stream. Because I can play her and so it's just I forgot which note to start on. So yeah, that video I played of the atomic tone is vert. On that'll
be in the show notes. So he's got Yeah, we've got the melodica the automaton play that little thumb harp even though it's out of tune, so this this thing's cool. I think you paid like eight bucks for it or something. Oh yeah, it was just like a little a little knick knack a little knick knack? It's you can fit in your hand easily. I think it's called the kalimba. But it's a smaller version of the caliber. Play it real quick so we got it okay. up it's hers is just a
it's just a little acrylic disc like a puck. Yeah, with little, little metal pieces sticking off of it and you just play it and it's got different little tones. Yeah, I used to be able to play really good. I got into it play really well. Yeah and the left. I think that's it. That's the four that we have. Yeah. Okay. And Leila has lots of instruments. She's got a ukulele. She's got a guitar got a bass. And you've got that? Well, I've got I've gotten electric guitars
that I've never really touched. It's the I bought the electric guitar for Dummies kit. And it came with a guitar and an amp. So they're not super high quality. I was like, I'm going to spend 80 bucks on everything. The book, the case, the guitar, the amp, the cable. 80 bucks, because I'm probably not going to get super into this. So I bought it. And I was worried. I was right. There we go. So we've got we've got another couple instruments I wanted to talk about. This one goes back to our
previous episode. It is the great Stalag pipe organ. Ooh, this sounds interesting. So there is a cave, a cavern that we did not talk about last week in Virginia, it's an the Luray Caverns in Virginia. And they have created an Oregon inside of the cavern. And when you play the Oregon it actually sins there's it's a custom console. And it taps Stalag pipe as the lag pipes stalactites. And they ring with you know with a tone. Sorry about that. Oh, we got one of our neighbors.
You could definitely hear that. And it taps the tone or taps the stalactites and plays a tone. So somebody has recorded one of one of my favorites. It's a classic song, Moonlight Sonata playing the the cabourn So here we go. Oh, this instrument is covers 3.5 acres. So it's got the Guinness World Record of world's largest instrument. So here we go hope that's coming through okay. For a little bit sounds spooky, right? And the vibrations you know resonate through the whole
cavern? Because it's they're so spread out because they had to find stalactites with the right tone. So they were like climbing up on ladders and just tapping them with a little hammer and oh, that's a B flat. Charlie Puth on the other end. Oh, my gosh, I do not like Charlie Puth anyways, anyways, that has been around since let's see, the 1800s we got hold on I gotta find the name for this. Okay so while you're doing that, somebody has the a tub tunes
trumpet. I'm going to click it and then turn the volume down because I don't know how long it's gonna be its looks like a little toy trumpet. Tub tunes, I guess is a toy. Toy brand. Oh, wow. Okay, what do you got? Okay, okay, so it was just a flute, but it's made out of bones. Oh, wait, I have a recorder. Recorder is not a pod though. Everybody's got to record if you went to public school, you've got to record it. I'm getting my recorder or you're getting a record. I'm gonna go get my recorder.
Recorder here. Why are you You're gonna go get your recorder to play my record. Okay, well while you're playing your recorder I'm going to talk about, I'm going to talk about cool dad a glass armonica. Okay, so what a glass armonica is, it could also be called a glass harmonica, but it is a series of glass bowls on a on a rod, and they spin at a constant rate. And you know how like, you'll put your finger on top of a glass or crystal goblet, and
it'll make a tone. Well, this spins the bowls, and they're all different sizes and thicknesses, and they're tuned and it lets you play. Let you play music. So you've got your recorder. Now, come Come listen to this instrument made out of glass bowls. Okay, I'm gonna stand back here too, when I play it because it's really well you can you not control the volume at all. Okay, so here's the glass glass harmonica. Oh, I've seen these before
so we've got him just standing there. And you just gotta like just touch the rim of the bowl was and he's got a little bowl of water. And as it spins it just you know you can make make the noises with it. Now, the last mauvais Cheerio. Benjamin Franklin Oh. recorders are one volume. Benjamin Franklin servos and Chet invented a radically new arrangement for the glasses in 1761. After seeing the Waterfield wineglass was played by Edward de Laval, at Cambridge in England. Franklin went to a
glass blower and his name was Charles James, to build one. So he built a glass armonica. And he was very excited about it, because he's like, you don't ever have to tune it. Like once you've made the thing. And you've got it tuned. You're done. You never have to tune the thing. Yeah, great. The glass stays in the same shape the same, you know, all that so and Franklin's it was 37 bowls mounted horizontally on an iron spindle. The whole spindle turned by means of a foot pedal,
kind of like a sewing machine. It's kind of what it looks like. It looks like an old timey sewing machine. But it sounds really neat. I liked the way it sounds. I've always liked when people would play glass like play bottles and you know all that says neat. That's always super cool to me. Okay, so if you're gonna play the recorder you need to get up Yeah, take your headphones off. Oh, that worked just disconnected from the cable that'll work all right, here we
go. We're gonna play the recorder The only thing I know All right, here we go I get a little lamb so proud, so proud. You know what I mean? Leila Leila is infinitely more musical than I am. I'm not a musical person. I like to. I like to sing badly I can, I can get a pretty good score on medium if we're playing Rock Band or Guitar Hero. I'm a singing wizard. Then i play play played on medium difficulty. I'll get like 85 or 90 on a lot of songs. So that's my, the
extent of my musical talent. Now I will hop into like FL Studio. And, you know, just take take other people's beats and stuff and mash them all together and do stuff sometimes, but it never turns out really good. Yeah. So that was my musical talent that oh, oh, on the recording. Okay. I was like you play the ukulele. You're really good. Oh, you're actually really good at ukulele. Does, you know play sneakily, they've actually practiced and
whatnot. So let's get karma. Yeah, even though that's karma for different Leila because the name has been registered by somebody else in the chat room. Uh, somebody stole it. But yeah, it's first come first serve. So did you have any more fun instruments? Nope. That was all you had. I'm just a flute made out of a bone. Yeah. What was the other? Oh, that was you said that you went and looked up regular instruments. Because I didn't have boring instruments. It's gotta be something
interesting. Ocarina another one. I saw an owl. I have to find it. I'll probably I'll put it in the show notes. There is a it's kind of like an Oregon but they play it with fire. But I feel like we've talked about it in a previous episode. Have you seen people? Music with pens? Yeah, I've actually talking about like when they're writing the noises that it makes like ASMR music. Yeah, yes. Yeah, I've heard different music. Like they did the Star Wars. Imperial
March. By writing words. It was really neat. I'm going to turn Bluetooth down a little bit because sometimes it'll come out really loud. Yeah, I get it. And I hate when we click on a YouTube video and there's Hey, YouTube. Yeah, somebody's yelling at you. Do you use do to just want to hear how to birthday with a pin? So I'm trying to turn the Bluetooth down for you. We can hear this. Oh, here we go. Okay. I started over. Okay, well. So I was kind of happy birthday. Yeah, I don't know how well
that's gonna come out on the recording. But basically, just whether they're going, you know, left, right diagonal makes different, different tones. And you can play very simple versions of songs. With scratching noises Hey, dad. Is mayonnaise an instrument is Manny's an instrument. We could ask Nick the rat. SpongeBob reference. Oh. Does he say it? Yeah, it's a hole. It's a hole inside joke. Nick the rat. Don't worry about it. All right, folks. I think that's gonna do
it for this episode. If you know of any cool instruments and want to let us know or like I said, if you've got if you got topic ideas, we've got about four right now, but we're gonna go through that real quick. So everybody have a fantastic weekend. Do we have anything else? Do you want to hear me play ukulele? I did. I will do it on live stream after okay. So yeah, next week. Listen to the live stream. Maybe you get a little concert
after. I got a fact from one of the voice actors from my latest episode of MUSE pod. But she did not have a source for it. So she said she'll get the source to me. And then we'll talk about it. Yeah, so I got one coming in. Okay, folks, that will be it for this recorded episode. If you're listening live, you'd get some more. Everybody have a fantastic weekend? By Kyle here tonight. Yeah.
