Hello, and welcome to to Fun Fact Friday Welcome to Fun Fact Friday with Leila and David. I'm Lila. And I'm David. I'm really good at what we do each week. We were a fun podcast and says facts every Friday, as the title says, and we record on Thursday we do a live Thursday nights at 630. Eastern. Come join us. Yeah, come join us if you're, you know, you're not doing anything. We got a chat room. We got a chat room with a gallon.

And we do a before and after show. Yeah, just it's mainly the the pre show is us troubleshooting audio issues. And getting our notes together. The post show is us talking about where we messed up and, and just chit chatting with folks who are listening live in the chat. You can just go to fun fact. friday.com. We have an IRC channel there, and you can join the fun. But we took last week off. We played a canned episode of silly speculation Saturday about the moon, where we goofed

off and set a bunch of non-facts. And we had a good time. And did you have a good time on that? Yeah. Okay, so what happened last week while we were not doing the show? We were in Raleigh at a convention. We were. We went to Galaxy con. I got to meet Nick Frost. He's a British actor, and he is from Hot Fuzz. And he's uh, he's in those movies with Simon Pegg at Worlds and stuff like that, and I got to get his autograph. And we had a good little conversation about branding. Lila,

I got to meet Christina v. And Kellen Gough. Which I know you know who Christina v is. But Keller MoGraph. You still don't understand. Talking to your mic. I know. It's funny. It's I don't understand. We don't face each other when we're recording. So when I talked to him, I do this thing where you can't hear me now. So they can they can kind of hear you. We got we got the the effects on the mics but yeah, so Kellum golf. Kellen, yeah. Okay,

so Kellen golf. Is a voice actor on Five Nights at Freddy's. Yep. And he does a few other voices like an attack on titan. And I think my hair academia. Yeah, and Christina v is the only one. Yes, if if you've ever watched a cartoon, you've probably heard Christina V's voice. Yeah. But we had a good time. We bought some cool art. And once we get it framed and hung up in our game room, we will post some cool pictures. We got some autographs my wife got

to meet Zack Morris from Saved by the Bell. His real name is slipping my mind Jack some? I don't know. No. It's some. It's a normal. It's a three name. Oh, yeah. It's a three. Three. Dave. Give me one second. Talk about the convention a little bit. Well, I find okay. The Convention was really fun. I went with one of my best friends. We it was really it was really fun. Mark Paul Goslar Mark Paul Goslar. Can't believe I could not remember his name anyway.

The entire body hurt when I came back. Yes, I was wearing platform shoes. I was holding a hammer. One of the days that we were there, there should be a picture on your if you're listening to this, after we've posted the chapters after Drib has finished the chapters. Thank you drab. There'll be a picture in there of Leila at a convention and her cosplay Yeah, so we were all hurting pretty much going up and down the stairs all day eating bad food shoulder to shoulder with about a million people.

Two days yeah, so yeah, so but I love the two days I wanted to buy so much more art because they had a bunch of comic book artists there and I wanted like autographed copies of covers that I've seen and we only bought you know you can only buy so much you run out of money. What we saved up for this time we go I want to bring the people that I'm going to see stuff Yes. Have them sign something. They do that and I make a lot of stuff so she could totally make them something

right. There's like you took the hat for for Billy to sign for Billy commits. Yeah, Billy. Peace, rest in peace. But yeah, so we had a good time at the convention and then came home and Lila got sick and So she got to take the week off of summer. Yeah, I didn't intend to. So yeah, but yeah, I got really hives bad. Yeah, she got hives was just not feeling good. So first of all, nice good. We had a canned episode. So this episode Oh wait, no wait, what are we We're just doing random

facts this episode, right? So no big introduction there. But we do want to go over our donation segment and I'll let Leo take that. Yep. So we have a monthly donation from vents of $5.35 and PayPal and we have a donation from Curtis and PayPal for $5. Mana dogs really about donation and Pay Pal for $10 by Stephen Grimes Grimes. We're all gonna record Grimes I'll come back and clip that.

They're all monthly donations. Yes. That's what keeps the lights on. I'm actually looking at moving our entire infrastructure to a different service because I found some that might save us a little money every month. So that's good, but that's a lot of work. I don't want to do it. So what about boosts? We got 2222 sets that is a row of ducks. Oh, wow. Why? Why? Oh, because they look like books from Billy Steve. On these last episode, the bolded is what what the comment was

critical thinking Saturday. All right. Hashtag Tim Allen belt. stead of oh, we went to the moon or you have no you have no frame of reference. Do you? Oh my gosh. Okay, I'm gonna mute myself read the next boost. And I will I'll find the clip. Okay. So we have a 5555 sets from OMA Fun Fact Friday from the from the Fun Fact Friday we did two weeks ago. For the moon. He says epic dad joke XD I forgot which dad joke. He says it was so many. It was the silent movie joke. Oh, I got a couple of people.

Now. I got a couple of people who said that they very much enjoyed. Okay, so I can only find videos that are long of Tim Allen doing the grunt. But okay, so he had the show. Tim Allen is an actor he had he's the guy who played Buzz Lightyear in the Toy Story movies. But he had a show called home improvement. And he played like this kind of buffoon type guy who was like a handyman at a handyman TV show. And he would like oh, like constantly.

Oh, you know, just just grants like it it was it was comedy. It was it was what we what we watched. Okay, so I think the comedy is good. You get you guys. That's just the song that Christina Aguilera. Oh, the one we played? Yeah. You're very you like absurdist comedy? Yeah. Yeah. So speaking of absurdist comedy, oh, thank you, everybody, for your for your wonderful support to us. We we really enjoy getting value back. And also the folks who stream

permanent and don't boost we see you too. And we definitely appreciate that. That's that those add up and they're just as good as boosts. And we love that. Thank you so much for that. We really value our community that we're building here. What it was, I was I was gonna go Oh, KS corner. So we got some mail from K. And it's about something that I was obsessed with when I was a kid. And now ever, Jess. Okay, I lived in West Texas. They were everywhere. Okay. We're gonna

talk about I know it's called it's called teasing them. It's called teasing them with. Oh, again. All right. So ks Letter This week corner. Case corner. Case corner. Yeah, we got to we got to we got to do a jingle. We've been saying that since a couple weeks. We got to agree on do some work on this like on a weekend? Yeah, it'd be fine. Just a little bit Jackalope. The Jackalope. Do you know what a jackalope is somewhat. It's like a rabbit deer,

a rabbit deer, a deer rabbit. Perhaps, perhaps, a jackalope is a fearsome creature with the body of a jack rabbit and the horns of an antelope. They are endemic to Wyoming. But taxidermy mounts of these North American critters can be found all over the world. Like I said, in West Texas, where I grew up. What is endemic mean? That's where they come from. They're kind of like, that's where they are cool. I don't know if the actual definition but I'm using context clues.

Yeah. That's what it sounds like. It sounds Yeah, I've heard it used in that context before too, so they are elusive creatures seldom seen in the wild. According to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. They are breed they breed only during summer lightning strikes. Legend has it that the Jackalope can imitate the human voice. Cowboys singing by the campfire can hear Jackalopes far off in the distance singing back to them. Well, that's the legend anyway.

This being a serious fact finding podcast Fun Fact Friday, listeners deserve to know the truth Jackalopes were invented in 1978 or 1932 by Douglas Herrick who along with his brother Ralph had taken a mail order course and taxidermy. When he and his brother returned home after a hunt, he tossed his rabbit onto the workshop and rushed in inside for dinner. When they returned, Douglas saw that the rabbit was leaning

against a set of deer antlers, and that gave him an idea. He put his taxidermy lessons to work and soon after, had a rabbit sporting antlers. Douglas sold the very first mounted Jackalope to the owner of a hotel in Douglas Wyoming for $10. That was good money in 1932. And get this Lila, but Douglas Herrick was 12 years old. This 12 year old kid named Doug created the Jackalope and the legends behind it just grew and grew. All right and the lower. Douglas knew an

opportunity when he saw one and sold 1000 Jackalopes. Eager to eager buyers before he grew bored of it. You're bored of making them. His brother Ralph took over the family business and made 1000s More before turning it over to his son, Jim. Fun Facts. Douglas Wyoming is the official home of the Jackalope. The Chamber of Commerce sells official hunting licenses. The Jackalope season is very short. However, it is only open for two hours between midnight and 2am every June 31.

These licenses are strictly limited to hunters with an IQ greater than 50 but not over 70 Too few folks don't doubt it. Do you photos of successful hunters. With their trophies few hunters exist. Thank you Kay i The Jackalope is I loved it. Like I said I saw him around Texas and my dad kept the legend going. And I 100% thought Jacqueline's real because we saw jackrabbits all the time, where we lived. And we was like, Oh, wow, there's a rabbit to the antlers. And he's like, yeah,

they're called Jackalopes. And why not believe him? You know, because there's one on the wall mounted on the wall. So why not believe it? And then I found out that they weren't real. And I was like, oh, but then I got really confused, because there was a jackalope on a show called America's Funniest people. So this is this is where a lot of a lot of the world learned about the Jackalope. And here this is a guy's impression of Dave cool yay doing the Jackalope voice. Fastest, fastest tumble don't

never ever cut smooth. That was his little catchphrase that came in a little hotter than I intended to to test that out. But there was a show called America's Funniest Home Videos. And then it spawned America's Funniest people, which was more like people doing skits and sketches with their cameras and sending a man it was less like, you know, people hitting each other and then the crotch with a baseball or something. Or babies

doing something funny. And Dave cool. Yay. Who was on full house with Bob Saget because Bob Saget did America's Funniest Home Videos first. And then Dave. Bob Saget is the main girl's dad on Fuller House. He's the dad on Full House. The dad of the three girls. Okay, the skinnier guy, Steve. I don't know. I don't watch full house. You've watched Fuller House. Anyway, it we're focusing on the wrong part of this. Sorry, but they've cool yay. And they did these little skits called with a jackalope.

And the Jackalope would basically be mean to people who were who were mean into him and like he would like stab him with his antlers and nail nail their feet to the ground with a nail gun and then push them off off the edge of a cliff or something and their feet would stay on the cliff. It was just silly it's very slapstick humor with lots of boring noises and stuff in it actually gonna play a little clip when we turn this down oh my gosh you're so excited stupid noises

there it is. Probably Tuesday audience just the Jackalope put a put a box by a pool. And the mailman was like oh there it is all and then he bent over to pick up the package and the jacket over rammed him with his antlers and knock them into the pool. Okay. Oh, are we gonna go down this rabbit hole now? I might not have you didn't catch it. Oh is the rabbit hole. Alright, so I may not have good humor. But let me these noises over literally anything I will allow. Okay,

Lila clip, and I'll put them on the soundboard. And we can start using them for the show. All right. I really shouldn't have given legal access to the audio board, Bluetooth. So it's like giving me the aux cord in the car. You never know what I'm gonna play. So they thank you okay, not only is it content, we we really appreciate the time you take. And your handwriting is impeccable. I have to say I do agree. So we random facts. Let's see make sure that we've covered all

of our bases on the on the outline here. Convention. Oh, and yeah, there may actually be mail because we checked it last Monday. But today was kind of funky. I plan on picking it up on the way home from work but actually left work early because I had to go to the doctor. Because here's your here's your pro tip for the week, folks. If you're gonna, if you're gonna scratch a bug bite, make sure you got nice clean hands before you do it. Because I got a little got a little something

down around. It's a pressure pressure nails. Well, it's like my luggage. So I scratched it real quick. You know, I guess I scratched it open and we're talking about clean your nails folks. We just decided this week we were gonna go ahead and just it's been a while since we've done just a random facts. And I've got a couple of sites that that I go to for these random facts. And I got one. I've got some about everyday items. Okay. Okay. Why to pin caps have the holes in

them. And the top of the pin cap? Like a big pin has like a little hole in the top of the pen cap. Oh, no. It's so you don't choke on it? That makes sense. Because people like to chew on their pens. And they were worried that I would have to swap accidentally swallow it. Because people do stuff like that. Would you? Okay, so help. Okay. I'm not gonna question that. Rubber bands will last longer when they're refrigerated. Why is that? When a rubber band is when a rubber band is placed in

the fridge, it causes the polymers to relax. And this keeps the band from breaking down as fast as it normally does. All right. I'm not putting I'm not putting rubber bands in the fridge. No. They're just, they're just too cheap to worry about it over in the fridge. I've seen that before. I've also we used to keep our batteries in the fridge because apparently they last longer if you keep them in the fridge. Now they don't Yeah, someone did a science fair project on that. Oh, yeah. Yeah,

they were all the same. They all end up man saying Yeah, well, they did a control by just using regular batteries. So the room temperature and then they put one out in the freezing cold or like the winter and they put Wait no, they put it out in the hot because it was hot. And then they put them in the fridge or the freezer and they all Turns out the same we did. I did one when I was in middle school science experiment where I wanted to see which LIDAR from the gas station would

stay lit the longest. So basically the best. Yeah, I had a stopwatch and I would light the lighter let it burn for a few seconds, maybe 10 seconds and then stop it. Just to you know, let let it not get super hot. I just did that all night with like three different writers. That's three or four different writers took good use of your time. Yeah, I mean, I was doing other stuff. I was watching TV or listening to CDs

or something, you know. And I found out that the little short name brand lighter lasted longer than the big like gas station brand lighter. It actually I think it had I don't know if it had like the flames were about the same size. So it might have been used it might have been set to a smaller flame. I don't know. It was like a last minute project. I waited to the last minute and I was like, Oh, we're gonna do we're gonna do Oh, which letter lasts longer. It's a science project.

at the gas station, lighters. I was bad about procrastinating when I wasn't. Don't worry I am. So that's fine. Your daughter so. So do you know who the monkeys are? People say the monkey around. Yep. But they're too busy singing put anybody down. Yeah. Yeah. Mike Nesmith of the monkeys. His mom invented whiteout. Oh. Now, she received $47.5 million plus royalties on future sales. For selling white out to to the Gillette Corporation in 1979.

Oh. How many? How many ways do you think there is to make change for $1? Nowadays, they don't make change for dollars. But that's neither here nor there. I don't change for $1 Let me think using the standard American coins on my screen. So don't try and look for it. That's what I was doing. And that was a lot, man. It's a lot. Especially if you count that you had that 50 cent piece in there. Give me a ballpark? Ah, no, let's say 79 different ways. Higher 150 different ways. Higher.

76,420 Oh 100 250. Probably 293. Okay, so I could have figured that out. It wouldn't be there's a math problem for it. But but that's not good radio. It's not good radio sitting there going. Alright, so then you'd have like, you'd have like, up to 100? pennies. Pennies one nickel. Oh my gosh, I just came up with an idea for a brand new podcast. We call it 293 or $1 293. Right? And each episode, one comment would be like, one penny. Three quarters. Okay, couldn't do

that. Because one penny is gonna end up with a bomb next episode 293 $1. We could record the entire series in one night. And one night? Yeah. I could take I could take half of them. And you could take half of them. And we could just record them. Rapid fire. Right, the right the RSS feed, and then just split out the RSS feed to 293 different entries. Yeah. upload one a week. Put all the put all the files up at once. They wouldn't be big. That's some good radio. Right? That's good radio. And

then we put a five minute ad on each 10 Second episode. Yeah, I've heard shows like that. Like it's like a 10 minute show that has like a three minute ad. Yeah, the podcasts that I listened to only have like one ad in the middle usually are like two. But I don't really mind if I can skip them. Yeah, as long as you can skip them. Yeah. Now on YouTube, or to to YouTube. We don't we don't give them anymore as much anymore. Yeah, because we use a browser that blocks it automatically.

And piehole. Yeah, and pile. The pile hasn't really helped me on other devices. Yeah, I may have to mess with the settings a little bit. I don't think it's actually getting the whole the whole of the network anyway, this is this is not this is not good content. Yeah. Okay. So that's for a whole different show. So did you know that there's a hole in spaghetti spoons? You know, like the spaghetti spoon with like the little prongs on it, so you

can pick up spaghetti? spork? No, well, it kind of looks like a spork but it's like a spoon that has little slots in it. So when you pick up spaghetti Yeah, sorry. I had to look over. Do you know why it has is a hole in it? Where it has a hole in the bottom? Yeah, in the middle, and you're like, Oh, that's so the water will drain out when it goes spaghetti. No. Well that is so you could suck up a little spaghetti. No. Funny. Well it is for the water to drain out. That's part of it.

But also, one serving of dry spaghetti fits in that hole perfectly. So if you're trying to measure out how much spaghetti to make for one serving. Oh, there you go. So one spaghetti Oh, no. Once is this is a serving of spaghetti horror spaghetti. Oh, no. Oh, one spaghetti. Oh is a single spaghett what? Spaghetti? Spaghetti, okay. Is the full bowl. Okay, so it's all the spaghetti. Okay, like, Okay, you got that spaghetti box and you pour it and you boil it? You have spaghetti now? Okay, a

single spaghett you have a spaghetti. Oh. So a a spaghetti is a single piece of spaghetti. Spaghetti. Oh, is this single piece of spaghetti? Okay, well, where are you getting spaghetti? It's a spaghetti. Spaghetti. Oh. Yeah, you've been say? You've been saying spaghetti. Oh, and spaghetti. You said a spaghetti. Oh, is a single spaghetti Okay, all right. So anyway, the holes there so you can get a single serving. So how about that? Okay, it's

a bigger hole than I thought I was. Yeah. I thought it was like our, you know, the spoons that have a little little hole. Oh, you're thinking of just a standard hole. One standard little breeze to get those? Yeah, no. Pokemon ride on was the first to be graded. Oh, yeah. Yeah, we had a little Pokemon episode. So we did probably, probably. I don't remember saying that was I don't remember knowing that. And most things I've said I know afterwards. Did you know that the QWERTY keyboard was designed

to slow you down? I bet it was. Yeah, cuz typewriters couldn't handle how fast the typists were typing. Oh, so we're just like jam bullet. So they they changed it? I believe the DVORAK Keyboard Layout is actually faster. That's how it was before Qwerty. I can't imagine using an ABC keyboard. No, you get used to it. I should change my keybinds on my computer and then change my hiccups. So there Bing Bing alphabet order your cough button. Yeah. So yeah, now nowadays, we don't

really need the QWERTY keyboard. But we've all gotten so used to it. We can't really change back now. There are 1000s of ways to tie a tie. Really? How many different ways are there to tie a tie? One in my book one time, you take it and you get the big fat in and small and you just like bam, bam and then you go and boom, you gotta tie.

Sorry, folks, you often spin spin, spin, spin in the loop, around around, up through, back down, over, across, up and down, left, left, right, right, left, up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, b a start and 90, Tartaglia. 175,000 different ways to tie a tie. Where's the Up Up, Down Down ba start from when she code is up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right b a start or be a select Start depending on what the limit is, is the Konami

code. Konami code, it was a bunch of Konami games, most famously contract. Okay, I'll think Galaga. So on contract and Tartaglia came out, everybody use that code to get the 99 lives because contract was hard, and you needed 99 lives. But then in contract to if you did that code, it would make the game harder. But people just automatically like, as soon as they started the game up, they did the code, thinking alright, I'm gonna get some buff from this. And nope, it made the game

harder. And I believe I want to say they added the selectin On contrary to fact check me on that, folks, I've it's been a while since I've read about that or heard about that. What is the tip of your shoelace called an aglet? aglet. Is that a fun fact? I mean, it's a fact. It's a fact. Is it fun? That's one of those facts. It's just like, hey, loser. I bet you don't know what the tip of your shoelaces are called. Yeah, that's right. You know what

they're called? I'm not even gonna tell you because you're such a stupid loser from Stupid town where you're born stupid city because you're stupid. Geez. Okay, so the computer mouse. Yeah. What was it originally called? Computer? Rabbit close who beat the rabbit and erase computer? Turtle? Yep. It was referred to as the turtle with a hard shell top and moving

parts underneath. Although early computer experts weren't sure it would catch on the computer mice or mouse's I would prefer if it was called a turtle. Oh, hold on. Well, that we can start referring to it as our turtle. Hey, grab the turtle there and click the I'm doing it. This is Canada. No. This is Fun Fact Friday cannon. This is a turtle This is the Lor have gotten me a Logitech G 502. Turtle. I have me this one that has a dragon on it.

You got a dragon turtle? So I just I just heard I just read computer mice or mouse's the Oxford English Dictionary accepts both as plural. Because I've always heard that it's computer mouse's when you're talking about computer mouse mice or mice but computer mouse's or mouse's you know. Like you gotta be in the know to know you know. Coca Cola sells the bed cups. McDonald's sells the best Coca Cola. Yeah, McDonald's. It sounds like the best. Yeah,

that's it. But yeah, well, okay. So great. They are very, Coca Cola and McDonald's have worked together for forever, right? And Coca Cola was like, Look, we sell a lot of Coca Cola at your restaurant. So let's make sure that our machines in your restaurants are always calibrated perfectly and have the right amount of syrup, the right amount of carbonated water with a sprite. So good there. Yeah, they make sure that their machines are always calibrated, right. They're very adamant

about that. So my mom made a life changing discovery the other time we went to McDonald's. Okay. Do you want to tell them about it? Oh, the thing that ruined the thing that ruined her day. ruined her whole day to find this out. We're not making fun of you, mom. Love you and think the same thing. Okay, so when when we have a cookout, and I'm cooking some burgers on the grill,

right? And we go buy a pack or 12 pack of hamburger buns. She's very adamant about making sure that the top and the bottom of each bun stays with its partner. Right? So she's always just like she just kind of handled it. No problem. She took care of it. Then she read that. Top buns and bottom buns at McDonald's are all just thrown together thrown into a top bun bin and at the bottom button. There waffles. Like a waffle machine for waffles. Then you

have a pancake machine for pancakes. Like pretend that the pancakes are the bottom button and the waffles hot bun. It. They just they're separate things. Yep. One of the separate bins. We're not exactly sure of it. But a pump pump but I'll do my hand movements to like slash that. Yeah. Okay. So she's now she's now I've eaten so many hamburgers and chicken sandwiches and everything from McDonald's never knowing that the buns were mismatched. And she could not stop talking about it.

Feels so it makes sense to do it that way since one of their signature things is the Big Mac, which has three buttons. Two of which being bottom. So what would they do with all those top buttons? It makes sense not to make them right. So twice as much. bottom bun. Well, not twice as much. But you know, they do the math on it. And they're like how many Big Macs do we sell a week? We don't have enough top bun that I'm sure that they overstock? Do they just bottom bun? bottom bun?

Yeah, I mean, I've gotten ones that had two top buns before and I was like, Heck yeah, double the sesame seeds. Do they do they taste like really, really, really bland sesame seeds. soccer balls were once used for playing basketball. Yeah, we used to do that in gym class when we didn't have a basketball. Yeah, because our school didn't have a lot of money.

Oh, first basketballs are not produced until 18 494. This means that for three years upon the invention of the game, people were using nonregulated balls. So, so pencils come in all sorts of colors, of course. But if you had to pick a standard colored pencil E. Yellow, yeah. Why? Because they're always painted yellow when the standard Yes. Okay, I understand that. But why did they pick yellow? Because it's, it's the school color.

When pencil started to go into mass production in the 1890s, the finest available graphite not led to fill them came from China. Pencil manufacturers wanted everyone to know that they only use the best Chinese graphite, so they painted their pencils yellow, the traditional Chinese color of royalty. Oh, this is a purple. I think I liked white paper. Oh, this is one more. Okay, CDs. How long is your standard audio CD? 30 minutes, I don't know. 74

minutes, if it's 74 minutes of music on a CD. All right. All right. All right. Well, I've got a lot more, but I think we're gonna hold it off. And we're going to do another random facts. I have a lot, because we are. If we didn't, if I didn't have another thing scheduled tonight, I'd say let's just keep going. Oh, we have another thing. But I am doing a live premiere of the new episode of meatless pod driving Lauren Bacall by Jackie McKarrick. And I am releasing that live. I'm

going to play it on me to stop live. And yeah, so I'm going to do that here in a while I got a lot of work to do. I got to finish up the show notes and get it all ready to go before 830 Tonight, Eastern. So if anybody's listening live and didn't happen to be in the chat room, pop on over to meet US DOT live and listen to the new episode of meet as part of 830. So did you have anything else to say anything? Any other other tidbits of random facts you want to do a few more or you think we

can hold it off until next week? Or some other time when we do random facts because I bookmark this site. It's got a lot. I'm gonna regardless like this has 300 Yeah, so when we want to do random episode, I think we will find the good ones are these are these are good ones. So All right. Thanks, everybody for supporting the show and letting folks know we're starting to see more and more growth and our our numbers here. So we're doing pretty well. Appreciate that,

everybody. We will see you next week. 630 Thursday, unless we can't do it live for whatever reason that does happen. But yeah, have a fantastic weekend.
