English with Dane

Dane Rivarola www.englishwithdane.com

Hey, I'm Dane. I grew up bilingual and after 15 years of teaching and working with English learners, I've realised that true fluency comes from understanding how the language fits into real life. I created English with Dane to give Spanish speakers a calm approach to becoming fluent through practical conversations about language, culture, TV and current events. No stress, just English that makes sense and gets easier to use over time.

The Guide to "GET"

GET ready! GET a pen and paper and take notes because it's GETTING real. 😂 All jokes aside, this is a topic that a lot of English learners have a difficult time with, so here's a quick guide on how to use the verb to get. This episode was inspired by Maura who is one of my Patrons and with whom I had a long conversation with last week. She told me it's hard to wrap her head around (good expression there) the concept, so hopefully this will help clear up any doubts you had.

Should you study grammar?

An important episode in which I address, or talk about, a question I get asked very often about studying grammar and how important it is. Over the last year or so, I've noticed some teachers preaching to disregard, or not care about, grammar when trying to level up your English and while there is some good that can come out of this approach, I think it's restrictive and can hurt your development in the long run. It's better to understand guidelines and then choose to ignore them, than to igno...

More Idioms, baby!

I know how you feel about idioms, so here are some more! I also like talking about them because it gives me a chance to reflect on how I speak, which idioms I use the most, and how I interact with people in general. Idioms are a great way to make yourself sound more natural in when speaking English, so I always recommend to have some in your back pocket (there's another idiom!).

Movie Review: The Suicide Squad 2021

It's been a while since I did one of these movie reviews so let's see how it goes. You guys voted on Instagram and Moview Review won so here it is. I reviewed the 2021 movie The Suicide Squad which I watched a few weeks back. Maybe it's not the movie you want to talk about, but really, the point is to arm you with the tools (darte las herramientas) to talk about your favorite (or not) movies with friends, colleagues, or whoever you're chatting to at the time. So I hope this episode does exact...

Be Yourself In English (GUIDE)

What's up? What's going on? This episode of English with Dane was inspired by a conversation I had with a listener over Instagram. I found myself giving him advice on how to improve, how to take that next step and I'm pretty sure it was motivated by him saying he wants to talk like ME one day. I answered that I would prefer if he spoke like himself (but in English) and after thinking about it for a few days, I thought it would be useful to record an episode about this idea of "being you...

The Comfort Zone

This episode of English with Dane is about the Comfort Zone and the role it plays in English-Learning, and well, in everything we do really. I think that oftentimes, we become comfortable in our routine, in our choices, jobs, etc and we forget to push ourselves to grow and really enjoy ourselves on our way to becoming who we want to be. This is not a grammar-heavy episode, but as always, there are some great new words to incorporate into your arsenal. The goal for this episode is to get you t...

Verbs You Probably Don't Know

So over the last few weeks, I've come across a few verbs in English that are probably lesser-known (menos conodidos) and could potentially confuse you if you've never encountered them before. I wrote them down and here they are. I think you'll enjoy these, and I hope you can incorporate them into your day-to-day. Plus, they'll make you sound smarter and more fluent, which is always cool. Don't stress out about learning and using all of these, because as always, the goal is to be aware of them...

A Conversation in English w/ Caroline

Another conversation episode! I really enjoy these episodes because I get to sit down with someone and just chat for a while. We don't talk about english-learning really, but that's by design. I think it's more important to be able to talk about anything and everything and to get used to the pace and production style of different native speakers. Don't worry if you don't understand everything. Don't worry if you only understand 60% or 40%. It's more about being comfortable with the discomfort...

Animal-Related Idioms in English

Back-to-back episodes of idioms? Yup. You wanted them, so you get them! This time I'm covering animal-related idioms and I promise there will be at least one that you'll be using in no time. Idioms are a great way to express yourself in a casual way, but a word of caution: don't overuse them. It sounds really weird when people overuse idioms. You have to sprinkle them in once in a while. You'll know when the moment is right, so don't force it. It's better to internalize the meanings of each i...

A Bunch of Different Common Mistakes in English

I'm back in the house with some COMMON MISTAKES! Some of these you might be making, others perhaps not, but this episode is really about "mistake awareness" rather than "stop making these mistakes!" I think sometimes we're too hard on ourselves and we don't live up to our potential, in fear of making mistakes. So, if you take anything away from this episode, I hope it's that. Give it a listen and take your awareness up a notch (a notch is "an indentation or incision on an edge or surface", bu...

Questions From Friends about English-Related Stuff

This episode is a bit of a different one. I had the idea for this episode while answering my friend Pablo's questions via What's App and thought it would be a fun thing to do. I get a good amount of questions from friends (mostly Pablo) and I love it. Sometimes you don't get a good idea of how to use a word, expression, idiom, or whatever by just going to google and getting the definition. Sometimes it's better to hear it from someone who uses that word or expression regularly and has grown u...
