In the early 2000s, two severe viral respiratory illnesses spread quickly and left devastation in their wake. Coronaviruses was the cause of both SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) and MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome). However, after an initial rapid spread, SARS and MERS were contained. Epidemiologist and WellMed medical director Dr. Osman Ahmed discusses why COVID-19 is different and why it’s so important to take steps to stop the spread, and new testing methods being introduced.
