(1) The apostle Paul explains justification this way: “Being JUSTIFIED freely by His GRACE through the REDEMPTION that is in Christ Jesus” (Rom. 3:24).

(2) SANCTIFICATION is the SECOND MAJOR STAGE of salvation. To be sanctified is to be “set apart” from a PROFANE, SECULAR, and CARNAL use to a SACRED, RELIGIOUS, and SPIRITUAL use, to be consecrated WHOLLY to God and to His service.

(3) In NT times, all Christians were called saints. The perplexing question surely comes to your mind: How can this be TRUE when we know of the very unsaintly shenanigans of the Corinthian congregation? The answer is that sanctification has a POSITIONAL, as well as a PROGRESSIVE or EXPERIENTIAL ASPECT.

(4) In NT times, all Christians were called saints. The perplexing question surely comes to your mind: How can this be TRUE when we know of the very unsaintly shenanigans of the Corinthian congregation? The answer is that sanctification has a POSITIONAL, as well as a PROGRESSIVE or EXPERIENTIAL ASPECT.

(5) Vine’s Expository Dictionary says that the holy character hagiosune, is described in 1 Thess. 3:13 which says “so that He (Christ) may ESTABLISH your hearts BLAMELESS in holiness before our God and Father at the COMING of our Lord Jesus Christ with all His saints.” Vine’s says this holy character may be built up ”little by little, everyday, as the result of obedience to the word of God, and of following the example of Christ.”

(6) In summary, justification happens when God declares a guilty sinner to be righteous, and then the believing sinner is called a “saint.” Progressive sanctification happens when God starts MAKING the believing sinner righteous. Justification is a one-time act; progressive sanctification is a CONTINUAL PROCESS. Justification releases us from the PENALTY of sin; progressive sanctification releases us from the POWER of sin. Both justification and sanctification are aspects of our “eternal salvation” (Heb. 5:9).
