Other Names for Sin and Salvation - Part 2 - podcast episode cover

Episode description

(1) Sin’s effects are moral and spiritual bondage, guilt, death, and hell. James explained: “Each one is TEMPTED when he is DRAWN AWAY by his own DESIRES and ENTICED. Then, when desire has CONCEIVED, it gives birth to SIN; and sin, when it is FULL-GROWN, brings forth DEATH” (James 1:14-15).

(2) Secondly, in the last episode I began a discussion of other names for salvation. The translation of the Greek verb sozo is to SAVE. The Greek nouns for salvation are soteria and soterion, whose meaning is “deliverance,” “preservation,” or “salvation.”

(3) Allow me to give 3 examples of being saved from TEMPORAL DANGER, SUFFERING, or PHYSICAL DEATH. First is when Jesus was walking on the sea, Peter attempted to go to Jesus, but beginning to sink cried out for Jesus to save him from drowning (Matt. 14:30). Second, on a boat under duress in a tempest in the Mediterranean Sea, the apostle Paul warned the Roman centurion and his soldiers that unless the sailors stayed on the boat, they could not be saved (Acts 27:31). Third, the 8 souls were saved from Noah’s flood (1 Pet. 3:20).

(4) The root words soteria and soterion add the notion of wholeness, soundness, and HEALTH, giving salvation a MEDICAL CONNOTATION — salvation from DISEASE, demon-possession (even though not demon oppression).

(5) Vine’s Expository Dictionary says that salvation is used in the NT of material and temporal deliverance from danger and apprehension. Use Vine’s Expository Dictionary to discover other aspects of salvation and save besides what I have listed.

(6) Salvation is a BROAD TERM that encompasses 3 STAGES: Salvation from the PENALTY of sin in the PAST (justification), from the POWER of sin in the PRESENT(sanctification), and from the PRESENCE of sin in the FUTURE (glorification).

(7) • The record against the believer in Christ is EXPUNGED. • The believer is EXONERATED from the charges against him before the Judge of all the earth (Gen. 18:25b; Rom. 8:1); • now the believer has PEACE WITH God, • And is ELEVATED to a place of right STANDING before God. • The believer in Christ has ACCESS to the SUPREME RULER of the universe, • Is made ACCEPTED in the Beloved (Eph. 1:6), • And is ADOPTED as a child into the family of God (Gal. 4:5), and given the AUTHORITY to all the rights and privileges of any child of God (John 1:12).

This is episode 180.
