Episode 9, Frédéric Gallois is working to solve champagne problems. (english version)
Episode description
As the director of operations for both the Moët & Chandon and Ruinart vineyards, Gallois is overseeing a series of agricultural experimentations carried out in the hope to make the production of champagne more environmentally friendly.
Pulling up vines to plant hedges instead, practicing a no-plowing policy, even thinking of reducing the amount of bottles that are produced… Does that sound like the exact opposite of what a great Champagne house should be doing? Not according to Frédéric Gallois, a trained agricultural engineer who is responsible for the 1300 hectares of Moët & Chandon and Ruinart vines in Northeastern France. There, he has been implementing for the past few years a series of environmental protection measures, some of which were developed in collaboration with scientists: giving up on herbicide products and using as little chemicals as possible, superficial treatment of the soil so as to not destroy its deep microbiological life, reforesting the pastures surrounding the vines to foster biodiversity… The end goal being to bring the brands he represents into the age of sustainable viticulture.
