137: Wisdom Traditions 3: Gnosticism

Weird Things Happened in Weird, Weird Weird. Welcome to episode one thirty seven. One thirty seven. What's up, y'all? I feel deja vu. I don't know, but let's run it, man. So today we're going to talk about gnosticism. It is a subject that's very important to me. I think it's it's important in the sense that, like when you think of esoteric philosophy, I think of the Big three, right, I think of gnosticism, hermeticism, and theosophy. Okay, if we're talking about like the

schools of thought, right, Gnosticism is super deep. So back in about twenty twelve, when my dad first encountered the lady, he's telling this to me, and at first I didn't understand it. I had never heard of a concept of there being some sort of mother goddess, except for in the d Vinci Code. It was the same year I read the Da Vinci Code, and it was all foreign to me. I didn't know how to understand it. That's interesting. Same year, yeah, well, it was the

same couple months. That's wild. Yeah, because it was my second semester of freshman year. In cosmic timing, it's cosmic timing. Yeah, it was like putting the seed in my head and then Dad saw the lady. But anyway, so gnosticism is cool because it was the first thing that helped me to break my mind free from like the the mainstream doctrine of the church. Let's say, right, Gnosticism is like a historical alternative perspective of the

life and the teachings of Jesus. It is very esoteric. It was considered kind of like a secretive order where the disciples were initially its holding the deeper mysteries of Jesus. And as you can see from the texts that we're about to read from, you even see Jesus instructing the higher initiates not to reveal the mysteries to the lower initiates. So yeah, like often this stuff wasn't even written down because it's like they don't want other people to find it,

because it's so not cool to be you know. It was considered heretic, you know, or heretical whatever. Yeah, they wouldn't even write this stuff. Is like a lot of it was passed down word of mouth exactly. Yeah, for almost one hundred years. So when we talk about the authenticity and the historicity of these documents. They are purported to be written in about the second century, which is one hundred to two hundred. Now, as far as the canon Gospels go, the Book of John was written in about

one fifty. And there are some scholars, namely Elaine Paguel's, who's probably the world's authority on gnosticism, suggests that the Gospel of Thomas, very famous alternative text and depiction of Jesus. She suggests that it was even written before the Book of John. So there's there's an idea that these texts, some of them. Let me just say, like her theory is that the Gospel of John was a counter to the Gospel of Thomas. Ooh, you see

what I'm saying. Like they the authors of these texts were aware of each other, alive at the same times, and they had their different takes of Jesus in the life. Now we know the history there. The Church decreed other texts. There's also other movements like the Marcian Knights and the evin Knites and the Gnostics. They were kind of similar, and the Church declared them all heresy, burned them, kill them, snuff it out, do not teach their texts. Do not read them. It is evil, do not

go near it. Right, So when we talk about the doctrine of gnosticism, it is, like I said, it's a different perspective of the life in the times of Jesus. So let's just get into it. So it's you mentioned something about like it's he was teaching about it a different rank God. Yeah, yeah, I'm sorry. I'm restarting here because we accidentally were recording for like a few minutes, and it turns out we weren't recording. So I just did this whole stick. Yeh, yeah, you know,

So it's all good. I'm trying to jog I'm trying to summarize the first stick here. Yes, yes, exactly. The idea presented a gnosticism is that the Old Testament God is actually the devil, which is why it was controversial. Right, it's yelled to bo off the the lesser Deity that sprang forth in ignorance and in error from spoiler, the divine Mother that emanated from the higher supreme God. So the idea is that the lesser God, that's you know, I will have no other gods before me, for I am

a jealous God. And right, it's it's actually like the devil that's trapping us here in the material reality. That's the summer summerization of Gnostissism. But we're gonna get deeper than that. We're going to talk about some of the

emanations of the AONs and the archons and stuff like that. But so from gnosis dot org, which is like a mainstream website of like gnostics who are trying to summarize this information for people trying to get their feet wet, this is what they say about the deity of gnosticism, cosmogony, which is the theory regarding the origin of the universe, and then obviously you have cosmology,

which is like the structure and the framework of the universe. The Gnostic cosmogony generally presents a distinction between a supreme, hidden God and a malevolent, lesser deity or divinity, sometimes associated with the biblical deity Yahweh or Eloheim, who is responsible for creating the material universe. Elaine Pagel's suggests that the Gospel of Thomas is older than the Gospel of John, and that the Gospel of John may have been like a counter text to the Gospel of Thomas. The Gnostic

God concept is more subtle than that of most religions. In its way, it unites and it reconciles the recognitions of monothism and polytheism, as well as theism, deism, and pantheism. And the Gnostic view there is a true, ultimate and transcendent God who is beyond all the created universes. I've ever actually created anything in the sense that there was no creative act. Rather, the universes emanated from the transcendent supreme Deity. Right. Yeah, it was

just like a transference of energy. It wasn't an active creating. It was just by existing, it was creating, right, It was passive, not active. He or it emanated or brought forth from within himself, the substance of all there is in all the world's visible and invisible. In a certain sense, it can therefore be true to say that all is God, for

all consists of the substance of God. But the same token, it should be recognized that many portions of the original divine essence have been projected so far from the source that they underwent unwholesome changes in the process. Being the material universe to worship, the cosmos or nature or embodied creatures is thus tunned him

out to worshiping alienated and corrupt portions of the emanated divine essence. The basic Gnostic myth has many variations, but all of these refer to the Aon's intermediate deific beings who exist between the ultimate True God and ourselves. They, together with the True God, comprised the realm of the fullness, or in Greek, they called it the pleroma that everything, or as they would say in Hermetism, the all, the mind of the all, wherein the potency of

divinity operates fully. The fullness stands in contrast to our existential state, which comparison in comparison can be called emptiness. One of the aaonal beings, the main one, the mother goddess Sophia from the Greek word wisdom, is of importance to the Gnostic worldview and the course of her journeyings. Sophia came to emanate from her own being a flawed consciousness, a being who became the creator of the material and psychic cosmos, all of which he created in the image

of his own flaw. This being, unaware of his origins, imagined himself to be the ultimate and absolute God, for I am a jealous god and there are no other gods beside me, right, old Testament text. You just read it in the last episode, right, yeah, about the Loki stuff. So the idea in the Gnostic text here is that that's actually the devil who's enslaving us and is so jealous over the idea that there are higher emanations of the divine. Don't make any other idols to other gods. You

worship me and me alone, right, you know? Since he took the already existing divine essence and fashioned into various forms, he's called the demi Urge or the half Maker. Wait real quick, sorry, did you say that this entity, this God created Sophia? No, no, no, child of Sophia, child, got you? Gotcha? The Mother is the Mother is the highest existence. Aside from this, the all, the Pleroma, the God, the true, supreme, ineffable God. Then there was I'm

gonna get into it. There's an authentic half and a true deific component within creation, but it is not recognized by the half Maker or the Demiurge and by his cosmic menions. The Arkans. Human nature mirrors the duality found in the world in part it was made by the false Creator God and in part consists of the light of the True God. Kind of like Orpheus in the

myth of how he's devoured by the Titans. But then I think it's like Athena or Zeus rather takes the ash of the Titans and forms a new heart and creates zagarias Dionysus. But the story there is that he has the essence of the Titans. He's half man, half divine. Right, it's the same concept. We are half divine, or just like we said in the last episode, we're star stuff. The divine spark, all divine spark is in our dna. We are made from it. Right, Humans are generally

ignorant of the divine spark resonant within them. This ignorance is fostered in human nature by the influence of the False Creator and the Arkans, who together are intent upon keeping men and women ignorant of their true nature and destiny. Anything that causes us to remain attached to earthly things serves to keep us in a slavement to these lower cosmic rulers. Death releases the divine spark from its lowly prison, but there has not been a substantial work of nosis undertaken by the

soul prior to death. Then it becomes likely that the divine spark will be hurled back into and re embodied within the pains and slavery of the physical world. So there is reincarnation present in gnosticism, but it's not like Hermeticism or even the Rosicrucian system where they're like emphasizing the fact that you're reincarnating. It's more like, if you don't achieve nosis, you're gonna come back again. Yeah, it's in the doctrine, but they don't go so far as to

emphasize reincarnation. It's like a feature of it, you know, they don't describe it in depth, but it's present. Yeah, they just mentioned it. Not all humans are spiritual or known as what the Gnostics called the pneumatics, and are ready for noss in liberation. Some are earth bound of materialistic beings also known as high letics, who recognize only the physical reality. Others live largely in their psyche or the psychics. Does that sound familiar. Yes,

we covered this in episode eighteen the Lord of the Rings episode. Some people usually mistake the Demiurge for the true God and have little or no awareness of the spiritual world beyond matter and mind. In the course of history, humans have progressed from materialistic since sates slavery by way of ethical religiosity, to spiritual freedom and liberating nosis now salvation. In the Gnostic system, evolutionary forces

of the cosmos are not sufficient enough to bring about spiritual freedom. According to the Gnostic view, we're in a predicament consisting of physical existence combined with ignorance of our true origin, our existential nature, and our ultimate destiny. To be liberated from this predicament, human beings require help, although we must contribute our own efforts. From earliest time, the messengers of the Light have come forth from the True God in order to assist humans in their quest for gnosis.

Only a few of these salvific figures are mentioned in Gnostic scripture. Some of the most important are Seth, the third son of Adam, and there's an entire branch of gnosticism called Sethian gnosticism. There's also another branch of gnosticism known as Valentinian gnosticism, because in the first century there was a prominent guy named Valentinus who was like kind of the leader of a branch of Gnostics and Jesus, and also the prophet Mani, who I had never heard of before.

The majority of Gnostics always looked to Jesus as the principal savior figure the soter, which I guess is a Greek word Sstics do not look to salvation from sin, but rather from the ignorance, of which sin is a consequence that ignorance being are true, higher, transcend and spiritual nature. So the Gnostic idea of sin is not in your action, but it's in your knowledge. Have you achieved nosis that you exist from the divine spark of God?

If yes, if you've achieved nosis, great, Now you're going to spend the rest of your life trying to maintain that connection. In shunning materiality. The Gnostic is not focused on your actions and your sins. They're focused on your illuminating knowledge. Right. Let's see here, the only way to dispel the ignorance of this lack of knowledge of the higher world is through nosis, which is the Greek word meaning like knowledge or truth. Yeah, which is

where gnostic comes from. Gnosis. Right. The messengers of Light, especially Christ, the logos of the true God, are known to the ones who reveal the noses, the logos, yes, the loves, Yes, the mind, the mind of God. It's not by his suffering and death, but by his life and his teaching and his establishing of the mysteries that Christ has performed his work of salvation. That's what we've been saying. It's like, I want people to try to open their mind. I get it.

I get being born a Christian and you are so it's ingrained in your head. You gotta worship Jesus, you gotta repent, you gotta say the Lord's prayer, you gotta do all this, and you gotta you know, thank you Jesus, Thank you Jesus. But it's like, what if there was an alternative view? What if what if we don't worship Jesus's death and where crosses of him being crucified and you know, function as a death cult, but rather we venerate the mysteries that he taught in life as a great sage.

Yeah, and why would he use his entire life preaching love and compassion and forgiveness and all of this stuff. If if we were just supposed to live in fear, living a constant fear of every you know, walking on eggshells. The fear of hell fi like it's it's contradictory exactly. That never sat right with me. So according to the Gnostic view, it's available to everyone. Salvation is not vicarious, it's individual. It's on the individual level.

They Gnostics being they acknowledge that nosis in salvation must be stimulated and facilitated in order to effectively arise within your consciousness. The stimulation is applied by messengers of light, who, in addition to their teachings, establish salvafic mysteries or sacraments, which can be administered by the apostles of the messengers and their successors. It's believed that the indwelling spark must be awakened from its terrestrial slumber by

the saving knowledge that comes from without the supreme Realm. The true God of transcendence is unknown in this world. In fact, he is often called the Unknown Father. It is thus obvious that revelation from on high is needed to bring about the salvation. The destiny and then I'm going to get into the text after this little blurb here. The destiny of the souls, according to

the Gnostic doctrine, is like this. When Confucius was asked about death, he replied, why do you ask me about death when you don't know how to live? This answer might have easily been given by a Gnostic back in the first century. To a similar question posed in the Gnostic Gospel of Thomas, Jesus answered, the human beings must come by gnosis to know the ineffable. The ineffable meaning the supreme, transcendent reality that we can't comprehend. It's

incorruptible, it's imperceptible, it's unknowable, it's unfathomable. Right, but through nosis we can fathom the higher realms. To a similar question, Oh, I just read that. I'm sorry. This transcendental knowledge must come to them while they are still embodied on earth. You have to achieve nosis in your life. Death is not the ultimate release until the nosus is achieved, the knowledge, the liberation. Ah. I see why they're relating it to what

Confucius said. Then why do you ask that if you don't know how to live? Right? Like meaning like if you haven't understand, you haven't gotten to the understanding of why are you alive? R? What does it mean? The nosis? The nosis? It's like you're so worried about death. You're right to figured out life. You didn't. Yeah, you haven't even reached the starting point yet, right, got it? That's cool. Death does not automatically bring about liberation from bondage in the realms of the demiurge or

the false God. Those who have not attained to a liberating nosis while they were in embodiment may become trapped in existence once more reincarnation. It is quite

likely that this may occur by the cycle of rebirth. Gnosticism does not emphasize the doctrine of reincarnation, but it is implicitly understood in the teachings that those who have not made effective contact with their transcendental origins within the spirit realm while their embodiment in the flesh would have to return to the sorrowful condition of earthly life. In the Gnostic view, being here is like a prison trap. It's a nightmare. It's a prison. It's a bad dream. See.

I feel like if you look at reincarnation through that lens, it makes more sense. It's that context gives it meaning. It's it's easier to digest. Like, Okay, so we reincarnate over and over and over and over and over. Why Well, because it's a trap or a test or a trial, right or you know, yeah, yeah, that's cool. Absolutely in regard to salvation or the fate of the spirit and the soul after death,

one needs to be aware that help is available. And like I said, there's multiple branches Valentinis gnostic dot org is uh or nosis dot org whatever I

said they were nosis dot org right yep nosis dot org is saying. Valentinus, the greatest of the Gnostic teachers, taught that Christ and Sophia await the spiritual man, the pneumatic Gnostic, the pneumatic being the one who, as in theosophy, they would say, you went through the second or third initiation, you have come into touch with the indwelling Christ or the endwelling Buddha. You have achieved some sort of spiritual liberation where you're aware of your transcendental nature

and you are increasingly focused on awakening to your higher self. Right, that's the pneumatic. According to the Gnostic view, the psychics could be redeemed and live in a heaven world at the entrance of the pleuroma and the fullness of time, the great cosmic, macrocosmic scale of everything. Every spiritual being will receive nosis and will be reunited with its higher self, the angelic twin, thus becoming qualified to enter the pleroroma, or the mind of God, all

the original source of all life and creation. None of this is possible without the earnest striving for nosis. Right off the cuff, that sounds to me like theosophy and her meticism, because both theosophy and her meticism. Again, they're all pulling from the same knowledge here. They just like you said in the last episode about Norse mythology, they're downloading this information from the source from the source, and they have a different lens from which they color the knowledge.

Ooh Odin sacrificed himself for three days, hung himself on the world tree for mystical knowledge, and he came back and he was reborn. Okay, well I also heard that story with my man Jesus. Yeah, you know what I mean. They're getting the same information and they're saying it a different way. That's how I view gnosticism, her meticism, and theosophy. It's like pick your flavor. ranch. I haven't tried that. That's so good. Yeah, but it's the same thing. It's the same, it's doritos because these are kind of these are kind of like these are kind of like like wisdom traditions, right, like the y her Meticism, Theosophy, Nastissism, the original ones before there were like the secret societies of today, like Freemason. They're pulling from this, right, So why would it be any different from how religions work.

They're just they're just taking the same source information and coloring it a different way, looking at it through a different lens, exactly. Yeah, yeah, it's all the same. So I I read from three different gnostic texts. If you google like some of the main gnostic text what are the most popular gnostic texts? I pulled from three of them. A few of them I had read before a long time ago, and now I've read them with a different lens of trying to break them down and discuss them on the episode.

And I have to say, there were some pretty mind blowing segments that I was like, oh my god, like this, you know, it's there's such a correlation to like my life and what I've experienced and what we've been talking about on the show with the actual knowledge in these texts. So the first dying, let's get to it. So the first one is the Apocryphon of James, or Apocryphon in the Greek means like the secret book,

the secret book, the secret teaching. Right, So the Secret Book of James or the Apocryphon of James. Now, I want to say, although I'm going to be reading quite a bit from some of these texts, it's not one hundred percent in order I pulled excerpt. It's like it's all from the Apocryphon of James. But there's so much more than what I'm sharing here. So this is a story in which Jesus is said to be giving a secret teaching to James. Okay, so this is from the perspective of Jesus,

the Master of Gnosticism speaking. You have asked me to send you a secret book revealed to me and Peter by the Master, and I could not turn you. Oh, let me paraphra it. This is James telling what Jesus revealed to him to the lower initiates. Gotcha, Okay, Yeah, the perspectives are different. So you have asked me to send you a secret book revealed to me and Peter by the Master, and I could not turn you down, nor could I speak to you. So I have written it

in Hebrew and have sent it to you and to you alone. I want to note it's very important to distinguish that gnosticism, although it is not Christianity, we're talking about events that probably really happened in the life and times of Jesus, with these secret texts popping up thousands of years later, claimed to be authored by his actual disciples that we read about in the canon gospels. Right. So, like my point here is like there's something to this as much or more as there is to the canon stories of the Bible.

It's the same people. It's just the church was like in the same time frame exactly, but the Church was like, oh, don't read these right because it didn't match up with what they were trying to push. They were trying to push a specific, bottled version of Christianity, and anything that didn't match up with that, they were like, burn them, kill them, literally, we don't want that, so the head of prophecy. Then I asked him, Master, how can we prophesy to those who ask us

to prophesy to them? There are many who bring a request to us and look to us to hear our pronouncement. The Master answered and said, don't you know that the head of prophecy was cut off with John John the Baptist. I said, Master, is it impossible to remove the head of prophecy, isn't it? The Master said to me, When you realize what head means, and that prophecy comes from the head, then understand the meaning of its head was removed. First I spoke with you in parables, and you

didn't understand. Now I'm speaking with you openly, and you don't grasp it. Nevertheless, you were for me a parable among parables and a disclosure among things revealed. Be eager to be saved without being urged, Rather be fervent on your own, and if possible outdo even me, for this is how the Father will love. You come to hate hypocrisy and evil intention. Intention

produces hypocrisy, and hypocrisy is far from truth. Remember in the History of the Bible episode, we were talking about the sin is not the action, it's the intention. Yeah, what's in your heart? Yes, exactly, Church and that you know when you go to church, it's all about sin. You know, avoid sin. You got to be sanctified from sin. But what if it wasn't about like, oh, you drink a beer on Saturday, check you sind What if it wasn't about that? But what if

it was about your subtle intentions? What if it was about something deeper behind the actions. You know, it's about the state of your heart and how you view the world. And God be eager for the Word. The first aspect of the Word is faith, the second is love, and the third is works, and from these comes life. The Word is like a grain of wheat. When someone sewed it, he had faith in it, and when it sprouted, he loved it because he saw many grains instead of just

one. After he worked, he was saved because he prepared it as food. And he still kept coming out to sow. This is also how you can acquire Heaven's kingdom for yourselves. Unless you acquire it through knowledge, you will not be able to find it. Do not let Heaven's kingdom become a desert within you. Do not be proud because of the light that in lightens. Rather act towards yourselves as I myself have towards you. I have put myself under a curse for you, that you might be saved. Very interesting

to note that throughout the Gnostic texts. To remember, I'm only going to be reading little, tiny, little segments here, but after reading multiple of the texts for study for this episode, there is a heavy emphasis from the words of Jesus purported by his twelve disciples in these texts about meditation and enlightenment. Meditation. Yes, it's not just prayer, but meditation and enlightenment. Enlightenment I would expect. But meditation, that's they say meditation like plainly,

kind of like remember in the Essenes episode, they would meditate. Yes, we're seeing a trendy hear bro the people around Jesus they were meditating and they were, you know, seeking mystical enlightenment. And then you know, two thousand years later it's like you can go to the church and you can buy a little holy water packets and you can, you know, you can. It's so corporate. Yeah, by the prepackaged communion kids. Right, yeah, it's it's not what it was. Yeah, it was, it was.

It was mystical, you know, it was. It was mystical, but it was also like intimate, right, you know, his individual, individual, intentional. And now it's like they're printing millions of Bibles a day and it's right. Yeah. In Gnosticism, there was no focus of some sort of ecumenical ecclesiastic community, which is like you know, we got to go to church every week, we gotta have like a bishop, and we got to confess our sins to the priest. Gnosticism, dude, Jesus was

low key anti religion. He was, like he really was. He absolutely was the actual man. Jesus was like, what's all this religion? Like, just connect with the higher God like literally, you know, literally and Jesus again, the theory here is that, you know, the secret teachings of Jesus, which is the Gnostic system. He's saying, the god y'all talk about is actually the devil. Yeah, my jod It's light. It is higher than yours. Oh what's the name? Don't worry about it?

Who cares? You know what I mean? Connect with it? Yeah, you know. And it's just crazy, bro, I tell you the truth. However, whoever not, however, whoever will receive life and believe in the Kingdom, will never leave it, not even if the Father wants to banish him. This is all I should tell you at this time. When we ascended, we were not allowed to see or hear anything. For the other disciples called to ask us, what did you hear from the teacher? What did he tell you? Where did he go? We answered them, he ascended. He gave us his right hand and promised all of us life. He showed us children coming after us, and commanded us to love

them, since we are to be saved for their sakes. Now we're going to get a little deeper in the next few texts. It's important to note the scholars believe this was again this was the Secret Book of James or the Apocryphon of James. Scholars believe at the end there when it's talking about Jesus ascending on a spiritual chariot, that they were actually referencing cabalistic mercab A mysticism. Remember in you mean that definition of what a chariot is a chariot of

spirit. Yes, like the mercab A Mysticshaha, some celestial light being would come down, He ascended to the heavenly realm. Yes, they had their own definition of Mirkaba mysticism. Yes, yeah, this is the Gospel of Truth. The Gospel of Truth is joy for people who have received grace from the Father of Truth, that they may know Him through the power of the Word. The Word has come from the fullness in the Father's thought and mind,

remember the logos, Yeah, thought in mind. The Word is called savior, a term that refers to the work he is to do to redeem those who had not known the Father, and the term gospel refers to the revelation of hope, since it means the discovery of those who seek him. Ignorance brings error. All have sought for the one from whom they have come forth. All have been within him, the illimitable, the inconceivable, who

is beyond all thoughts. But ignorance of the Father brought terror and fear, and terror grew dense like a fog, so that no one could see. Thus error grew powerful. She worked on her material substance in vain. Since she did not know the truth. She assumed a fashioned figure and prepared with power into beauty, a substitute for truth. This was not humiliating for the

illimitable, meaning, the transcendent God. It's illimitable, it's inconceivable, it's imperceptible, ineffable, blah blah blah, you know, too big for words. Actually in thought, yea beyond thought, the illimitable, inconceivable one. It was not humiliating for him, for this terror and forgetfulness and this deceptive figure, whereas nothing whereas established truth is unchanging, unperturbed and beyond beauty.

For this reason, despise, error, error had no root. She was in a fog regarding the Father. She was there preparing works in deeds of forgetfulness and fear, in order by them to attract those of the middle and take them captive. The forgetfulness of error was not a parent. It is not from the Father. Forgetfulness did not come into being from the Father. But if it did come into being, it is because of him. What comes into being within him is knowledge, which appeared so that forgetfulness might be

destroyed and the Father might be known. Forgetfulness came into being because the Father was not known. So as soon as the Father comes to be known, forgetfulness will cease to be. So what they're talking about here is that in Gnostic cosmogony, there's this transcendent God, right, the Father sometimes called the Mother Father, and then this being, this goddess figure who I mean, could be the lady I don't know named Sophia, which is the Greek word

for wisdom, emanates from the source of transcendence. Right, just comes into being like a thought form, just pops into being. Yeah, this continues until those experiencing all these dreams wake up. These caught in the middle of these dreams of these confusing things see nothing because the dreams are nothing. The blessed benevolent Mother Father had compassion for the Mother's power that had been removed from the First Ruler. The
