Hooked On Life: Living Through The Lens Of The Author ft. Tom Nash.
Episode description
Tom Nash aka 'DJ Hookie' is a quadruple amputee after narrowly surviving the grip of a shock meningococcal diagnosis now 20 years ago. He is the co-founder of Starfvckers, a Sydney based club in which he first headlined as DJ Hookie. He is a world renowned speaker & storyteller, having graced stages across the world including TED X in Sydney during 2019 to deliver his memorable keynote 'The Perks Of Being A Pirate', & he is a newly acclaimed author.
Losing his limbs, particularly his arms has afforded Tom one of his most recognisable features: his pirate hooks. Recalling a conversation with Mark 'Chopper' Read, Tom described a desire to be remembered for more than his physical disability, to live a life interesting enough to write a memoir about. Not only has he lived a life rich in story but his story now finds its place on any good book shelf, by the title of 'Hook, Line & Sinner'.
In this conversation we don't only follow some of Tom's story but we discuss ideas such as:
- Why Tom embraces dark humour.
- Narrowly surviving the meningococcal c-strain & why he had to have all 4 of his limbs amputated.
- Playing the role of the 'author' & how this can afford you a meaningful life.
- The life changing difference between resilience & 'anti-fragility'.
- Reverse engineering your problems to create simple solutions.
