#274 - Drew Harrisberg: Living With Diabetes & Exposing The Body Positivity Movement.
Episode description
Drew Harrisberg is an exercise physiologist, diabetes educator & type 1 diabetic.
Diagnosed at 22 years of age, Drew thought his life as he knew it was over. An early sign of hope & personal agency encouraged him to change his perspective & take the challenging diagnosis in his stride.
Now a popular online educator, Drew's social audience has grown as people flock to his platform for science backed & proven methods to improve their health & wellness. You may also recognise Drew from appearances on Simon Hill & Rich Roll's podcast's.
In this conversation:
- We bust a number of common myths about type 1 & type 2 diabetes.
- Discuss the role that exercise & nutrition play in managing blood glucose.
- Day to day life as a type 1 diabetic.
- We discuss why gym bro's think jabbing insulin will make them fully hectic & more anabolic.
- I ask Drew whether the body positivity movement is dangerous.
- His thoughts on Ozempic.
- & much much more.
*Please note: Towards the end of the podcast Drew makes a reference to statistics of obesity in people living with type 1 diabetics vs general population. We have linked the study he references below. However, after further reviewing the data, Drew commented that a 2024 meta analysis seems to suggest that it isn't a significant difference between type 1 diabetics & general population.
