Steve

Hello, returning happys and new listeners. This is Steve Bennet-Martin,

Stephen

and this is Stephen Martin-Bennet. And

Steve

in welcome to a lifetime of. The podcast where we take you on our journey through some of the movies, TV shows, and other bits of pop culture that are helping keep us happy while hopefully bring a smile to your face along the way, and to,

Stephen

they were finishing up final girl, February, as we talk about how teens are bad at covering up murder in. I know what you did last summer.

Steve

Yes, my love. But first what's been making you happy New York city. That was an amazing trip. Wasn't it?

Stephen

It was the most fantastic. In a long time. And it's, it was actually the first trip in a long

Steve

time. You know what we did last summer? Nothing. Yeah.

Stephen

This time we took a trip up we saw a couple of Broadway shows. We did some shopping. We caught up with some of our friends what were some highlights?

Steve

Well, we did head over to the Moulin Rouge. We did

Stephen

head over to the Moodle Rouge and that was absolutely spectacular. Spectacular.

Steve

Thank you very much for getting us the CanCan seats, because it certainly made the show. It was this wild experience. I'm like any other I've had on. Yeah. I've never

Stephen

experienced a show like that, where the action is happening 360 degrees around you. And. Like we were close enough that the actors could have licked us on the

Steve

nose. Yes. And unfortunately they did not do that, but yes, if you're going to see the Moulin Rouge and you have a couple extra bucks to spend, definitely upgrade to the CanCan seats, because it is an experience that you'll never forget.

Stephen

No, because we were close enough that during like the crying scenes, we actually saw the tears fall from their face to the stage and splash. We were that close and. The music was really good. I'm a huge, huge fan of the movie. And the changes that they made in some of the songs and a little bit with the storyline worked so

Steve

well. It did you know what also worked really well? What six, the newest Broadway show about the six wives of Henry the eighth.

Stephen

Yeah, it was absolutely brilliant divorce.

Steve

Beheaded died, divorced, beheaded survived. Yeah, it was amazing as well. That is one that I plan to see every time it comes in anywhere nearby, locally to see on

tour.

Stephen

So the rehearsals for the national tour started this past week. So they have not announced where they are headed. If it's coming within driving distance, Sarasota, I want us to

Steve

go. Yeah, exactly.

Stephen

And we also,, dress the part with crowns based off of Catherine pars, crown that were made by our wonderful friend, Brianna.

Steve

Yes, and we love it when we can go anywhere and get complimented on looking extra. Fabulous. Of course we do. Yes. And speaking of fabulous, why did we choose to wrap up this month of final girl movies with, I know what you did last summer.

Stephen

So this is a really fun movie. It has one of the best chase scenes of any slasher film I've ever seen. It has a magnificent cast. Like it's just really, really talented cast. And I like it a lot. I still think it ages really well. It's a fun movie.

Steve

It certainly is. I love it as well. I remember watching it when I was in like middle to high school

Stephen

and then just came out when I was in high school. So

Steve

it was, it was old at the time. I'm not old, I'm not old, but you know, cause it's, it's, it's a classic. Yeah, it had already been out. I certainly did not watch it when it first came out when I was 11. So it was a couple of more years before I did that. Just to rub in my age for you a little bit. I appreciate it, but oh, wait, it came out in 2017. That can't be right. Can't be right. You wrote 1997. Okay. Yeah, it came out in 1997, so I was 11 years old and.

Didn't watch when it first came out. I did watch it later on, and it is an American slasher film written by Kevin Williamson and directed by Jim Gillespie based on the 1973 novel of the same name written by lowest Dunkin.

Stephen

So William wrote the scream trilogy and Gillespie. Did the movie joy ride with K?

Steve

Yes. And he also later went on to direct 2006 has venom, which was a good fun rump. Yeah.

Stephen

And the premise and the characters may be the same to Duncan's book.

Steve

I've read the book. Yes, me too. I don't remember the book, but I read it. Yeah.

Stephen

The plot is totally

Steve

different. Very different, but still very good though. The book was

Stephen

very good. I remember I picked it up because I was like, Ooh, a slasher film based on a book. This has to be fantastic. It was totally different. Kind of like reading. The book psycho and expecting it to feel like a

Steve

movie. Yeah. Yes. But Williams did a great job taking a great idea and turning it into a slasher movie. Yes. Now the movie centers around Jennifer Love Hewitt as Julie, Sarah, Michelle Gellar, as. Ryan Phillipi is Barry and Freddie Prinze Jr. As Ray and

Stephen

my girl, Jennifer Love Hewitt started on kids Inc in the eighties. And then she made it big in party of five and went on to star in the ghost whisper. And more recently she is now on 9 1

Steve

1. Yes. And Sarah Michelle Gellar is obviously Buffy the vampire Slayer. That'd be one and only, but it was also in cruel intentions where we've also seen. Yes. And,

Stephen

This is also where Sarah Michelle Gellar met Freddie Prinze Jr. And they've lived happily ever after. And they even did the Scooby-Doo movies together.

Steve

Yes. She has one hell of a resume between, I know what you did last summer. Buffy Scooby doo and cruel intentions. Yup.

Stephen

If you like, all of those things are all things that I

Steve

love. Yes. And let's get into the movie. What happened? My love? Well, what

Stephen

had happened was the movie opens at sunset with a man drinking on the edge of a cliff on a twisty turny road. And he's lamenting over a necklace in his hands and he spins it and we hear that telltale noise. And then he hears a noise behind you. And then there's fireworks and it goes into the 4th of July festival in town. And it opens up with what this next scene.

Steve

Yes, but just to just finish on the starting point, someone drinking alone on a cliff, on a holiday lamenting over something is never going to end well, not really know right away that this is not going to be a happy ending for this young lady. No. And,

Stephen

Seeing as this came out after. It was also interesting that the movie did not open with an opening kill.

Steve

Yeah. In the sorts. Yes. I mean, in hindsight, we know that he died off screen somewhere committing suicide,

Stephen

but we did not get the. Killer introduction. Kill.

Exactly.

Steve

Well, he didn't see Williamson write the screenplay for this or write it before scream. It just screen came out before, but yes. Meanwhile Helen wins the Ms. Croker queen beauty pageant while her boyfriend Barry and two friends, Julia and Ray look on from the second. They celebrated a party where max played by

Stephen

Johnny Galecki from big

Steve

bang theory. Yes. He hits on Julie and Barry steps in, so they decide to go to Dawson's CRE oh, Dawson's beach.

Stephen

Yes. Dawson's beach. Which is funny because Williamson also wrote Dawson's Creek.

Steve

Yes. And it is intentional. Yup. Tribute to this, to say, to speak and I love, or you loved when Helen was competing in the pageant, what she said about acting, she had a very similar plan to what you were hoping for. Right. I

Stephen

planned to move to New York city where I'll pursue a career as a serious actress. It's my goal to entertain the world through artistic. Through acting I will serve my

Steve

country. Yes. And I love how later, when she's talking on the beach with Barry, how her being a serious actress involved with soap opera, it in

Stephen

view involves a future plan where she's going to be a contract player on guiding light. And that just makes Helen even more awesome that guiding light, the best soap opera ever air on television was part of Helen's plan. So good job, Helen. I fully approved.

Steve

And just in case we were wondering which of the four is likely to survive to the end. We see at the party when Julie declines a drink from max. That she's the final girl. Yeah. Because

Stephen

she's not drinking, but this is a movie we're going to have to discuss final girl type of things later on because there's definitely some things where we discussion can be just because she survives. Does that make her a final girl, but we'll get a. All

Steve

that later. Also very shortly after she says no to the drink, she also has sex off screen. And so without being a Virgin, she stands the chance. But before she loses her virginity, she gets all hot and bothered. When they're talking about the urban legend of the man with the Huck, and we see how many different versions of the story exists as they can't agree on how it ended.

Stephen

Ray says it's American folklore, which all have the roots in truth at some point in the past. And then as you said, the group that separates the talk about their futures and Ray and Julie.

Steve

Yes. Now, by the time that I got to the point where we were all swapping urban legends, this movie was its own pretty much urban legend. Yeah. So what was the original version of the story that you knew my love? So, they

Stephen

talk about the drip, drip, drip, or the scratch, scratch, scratch on the. Roof for the car. But the one I heard about was that a couple went up to lover's lane and they were necking and they had the radio on for music in the background. And then there's an interruption that Luna lunatic has escaped from the local asylum and that everybody better be on the lookout and the guy wants to continue the girl's like, no, take me home. And then they hear this. And they drive away.

And then when they get home and the guy gets out and walks around to the other side of the car to let the girl out, there's a hook in the door of the car and they realized that's how close they were to dying. That's the version I heard.

Steve

Oh, excellent. And we already know from. So many things, so many things,, how urban legends are typically based. In fact, now this actually traces back to the 1946 Texarkana Moonlight murders. Yes. Where a killer used a hook as the main kind of modus operandi when he was killing. But have you heard anything in real life based off of this as well, besides.

Stephen

No, I haven't, but I mean, we've covered the babysitter and the call's coming from inside the house, how that was based on actual events. And it did make me wonder, like, okay, so there's this one. And then how many other urban legends are started from, little known murders that people just start adding their own things in. And it just travels across the country like

Steve

that. I think that most of them do. I mean, it's very hard to have original ideas like that. So, yeah,

Stephen

no, I was just going to say, we were talking before about Julie having sex with the Ray breaks, part of the final girl, trope of her being a Virgin. Do you like, are we moving into a territory where the final girl can have. Or do you think that this gives her. It's a curse.

Steve

I was going to say in some ways I might argue even that it makes it not like deserve, but it justifies what's about to happen to her because she's having this perfect life. Has these amazing plans. Everything is going to set the set path that she has set out for her. And then she has sex and everything gets ruined like that night. I

Stephen

don't think it's the sex that does that. I think it's a decision later wrong because. I don't think Kevin Williamson is going to be blaming anyone for their sexual

Steve

choices. True. But yeah, on the way home Barry's drinking and screaming out the sunroof then spills the bottle of liquor and Ray's lab results. And I'm hitting something at first, they try and reason it's an animal, but they find the fishermen's boot. Then the body with a mangled face

Stephen

and the person appears to be dressed like the man from the beginning of the movie. And assuming he's dead rather than calling the police. They decided to dump the body though. Julie fights them on this and says, you know, they need to do the right thing. And the other say they should, if they go to the police, all their lives are ruined. And Ray especially says this since he doesn't come from a powerful family or a family with money.

And of course, because it wouldn't every movie like this is going to need some suspects, max from earlier in the movie drive. And you have to wonder what did he see?

Steve

Yes. And before we get into what they do after they shoe max away, I mean, at this point you've had someone you were in high school, you're drinking. Would you have had the body or dumped the body or what would you have done in this situation? Would you have called the police? Would you have called mom and dad? What would you have done?

Stephen

I don't know, I tend to go with Julie's thing that Ray was sober.

Steve

Ray was

Stephen

driving Julie's sober. Julie wasn't driving. Barry was the only one drinking. It was an accident. And if their families are that powerful enough, that Helen's family has a department store. We see Barry's handling is Uber wealthy. And Julie seems to come from a well-respected family and they come from a small town. I come from a small town, there would have been enough sway that we would have been believed.

Steve

Yes. What about you? Well, back then, I don't know what I would've done, but in hindsight, with all the knowledge I have today, clear thing is you chop off the head and the hands obviously, and you dispose of the body. That's what you do to make sure that the person's dead and they won't be coming back to kill you a year later, it solves all of the problems in the world. I'll never be ideal.

Stephen

That's jumping real

Steve

far. Okay. All right. But they don't do that. Instead, as they're getting ready to dump the body hole into the water, the man comes to and takes Helen's crown. As they knock them off the deck, Barry dives in and retrieves the tr from the man's hands. And Barry sees them open his eyes, but they don't bother to wait and make sure he doesn't receive. And they all make a pack to take it to their graves.

Stephen

So I personally believe that right here, Barry is responsible for everything else that happens in the movie because he doesn't say the man opened his eyes. He lets them all believe that the man drowned down there instead of knowing full well that the man was still conscious and easily. I could have just swarmed at the surface. What do you think was in Barry's mind that he's like, well, I'm sure that he's yeah,

Steve

I don't know. He's a fucking moron because I mean, at this point with that struggle and knowing that like everyone, all of them knew that when he fell into the water that he was alive. I mean, even if, Barry didn't share with them, oh, he opened his eyes or whatever, I would have watched the water to make sure that he didn't swim to the surface, like watch where you drop the body, make sure that he doesn't surface make sure that he doesn't come out, make sure, you know, the fucker stays down.

Stephen

Yeah. Because they walked down to the, where the dock meets the land and they have their back to the water and they're all fighting. Like he easily could have surfaced anywhere behind them and they wouldn't have seen because they were yelling so loud. Very, it was. Say it, say it out

Steve

loud. We take it to our groove. I know. And at this point, honestly, you know, as much as there is the twist in the movie that it's not David, that it's Ben, who is the killer. There's no real, like I was like the entire time. I was like, obviously it was whoever they hit with the car stayed alive because we'd note that he lived. Like, I never once for a second thought that the guy who they hit and ran over and was underwater. Underwater. I like always thought first time around.

I was like, well, he lived because we see him live basically, basically, but they try

Stephen

to like make it because of the, I mean, even the title of the movie. I know what you did last summer. Yeah. Because you would think if it was the person that hit it would be. I know what you did to me. I know what you did last summer. Sounds more like I saw

Steve

what you did. Yes. And speaking of that message one year later, Julie is a shadow of her former self super thin and with lackluster hair. I mean, she's still a pretty girl, but they make her look tired AF yeah. She heads home for the second half of the summer where mom's more than happy to point out. She looks like garbage. Sounds like my mother and she's flunking out of school.

Yes. And then the mom delivers a letter that has no stamp or return address that says, I know what you did last summer. And then we hear the sound of the necklace spinning.

Stephen

And if you received a cryptic message like this in the mail, what would the message say to ne need to say for you to freak out? Could there be anything. That would cause you to freak out, like, have you done anything so bad, like murder that you would be worried?

Steve

Not like murder necessarily that I would admit on air. However, I would get paranoid if it was like, I know what you did that time that you blacked out when you were drunk, I'd be like, oh no, that could be anything at any point in time. Like, no I'm living sober and it's all better, but they were like, I know what you did that time in college. I'd be like, oh really? Cause I don't. What about you? Oh, well say John, I

Stephen

know I was reading through the script and I was like, no, you would have to, like now I can't think of a single thing that somebody could try to hold against me that I wouldn't be like, yeah, I did it.

Steve

Well, it's one of the many reasons, I guess why I love you. You're such a shiny white Knight.

Stephen

I wouldn't say that. I would just say that nothing that I've done. I wouldn't own up

Steve

to true. Now it really shares the note with Helen. Who's working with her Conti sister, Elsa at their parents' department stores. Since New York didn't work out, no guiding light for her yet. And as the two girls are talking, Elsa is clearly directed to look suspicious as she watches them from afar. Did you ever consider her as suspect

Stephen

100%? Because even from the night Helen one croaker queen and they got into an argument at the after-party and things, you could see that even though they're sisters, Elsa does not care for her at all. Like not even a little bit. So at this point, whether she actually knows what she did or. She thinks that something did happen and she's just messing with them. She's easily a suspect, I think.

Steve

Yeah. I agree. Now they then go to Barry who doesn't take the notes seriously. Other than he and Helen breaking up the last year, doesn't seem to bother him.

Stephen

Like, like he was still on the football team. He seems to be doing well. He's other than being his angry. He seems to be

Steve

fine. Yes. Not that fine is fine, but Julia shares then that she did follow the news afterwards and that the dead man's name was David Egan and they found the body three weeks later, ruling in a drowning accident

Stephen

and Barry, because he hates the guy rule zeroes in on max as the suspect for the letter. So Barry bullies him and slices his face with a giant. And after Barre leaves, max decides to get brave and threatens Barry back, like don't test me mother fucker. And at that point it's like, well, maybe max is a suspect after all, like maybe he was just playing dumb. Look how angry he is there. Maybe he did see something that night. So

Steve

like Molly doesn't even make an another 10 minute.

No,

Steve

but

Stephen

then it's time. And all of a sudden Barry knows where he is. So they run under Ray at the dock and he's now a fishermen, just like his dad, dad was

Steve

yes. And very leaves, hoping to never see them again.

Stephen

And Julie and Ray have a conversation and cause Ray's like, I'm really sorry about all this. And Julie's like, I'm responsible for my actions and I don't blame. But I don't want to know you either.

Steve

Yes. I mean, throughout the movie, I'm like, they're clearly over. I didn't believe them as like a, these are the final two together now.

Stephen

Like I believe in Helen and Julie working out their friendship because, but yeah, I just don't see. I, I maybe it's, I don't see the chemistry between. Freddie Prinze Jr. And Jennifer

Steve

Love Hewitt. And yeah, there was something off that whole time. But max meanwhile is at work by himself and the fish hook from earlier is missing from the ice where it was left. Then a man and a slicker comes out of the steam and puts the hook through Max's chin into his head. It's

Stephen

real simple gets rid of that suspect right off the bat. And now are, would be killer. Has this murder weapon.

Steve

Yes. Meanwhile later that night Mary's working out then comes out from the shower and finds a Polaroid of his fucked up car with the caption. I know we hear the necklace sound in the background and someone took Barry's jacket and. He puts on his

Stephen

clothes, runs outside and someone's in his car and runs him down through a wall. And the figure in the fishing outfit gets out of the car stock slowly over to him is ready to kill him with the hook. And Barry says, no, no, hell hell.

Steve

And he dies. No, he doesn't die. For whatever reason, it just switches to him being in the hospital. I can only guess that something. Found them are almost, but they didn't really explain that too well. And it

Stephen

also, you have to wonder, did Kevin Williamson like want Barry to be a potential suspect as well? Like, I don't know the reasoning behind leaving him alive other than the killer is wanting to make them. Or wanting to let them know that he controls, whether they live or die and knows that he can change his mind at any point is the only thing I could

Steve

come up with or just after watching him shirtless in that towel, after working out Kevin Williamson was like, you get to stick around a little bit longer because at least when I was watching, I was like, yeah, I'm super gay.

Stephen

See it. Wasn't that point. Got me with Ryan Philippi. It was cruel intentions and the drying off from the talent is, but seen

Steve

either way. I, at that age, I was like, this is not how I respond to women.

Stephen

So using the magic of dialogue.

Steve

Yes. Julie uses the OJI worldwide web when searching David Egan and only gets six results. And one of which is an article that shares two summers ago, David was responsible for the accidental death of his girlfriend, Susie Willis, Julie remembers the body. They had had Susie tattooed on the arm. They then look up David's mother or sister and decide to visit them because reasons. Yeah. Yeah. Now, my first internet experience was with AOL where it was a little bit more thorough than here.

What was the internet like before then? Was it really like an accurate description of like you type in a little box and you get six results?

Stephen

So yes, a little bit like that. I mean, I remember when like excite was the number one search engine and then Yahoo was coming along and. Then Google can emo on the system. I just, it was a whole weird thing back in the day and everything was slower and like searching for things was not as. Easy as all of this, because not a lot of newspapers were had their articles online yet.

And I would think that like, it doesn't, I don't remember in the movie what newspaper they see the article from, but I can tell you it wasn't their local

Steve

newspaper either, either way. I mean, I just love seeing old internet and like whole. And now out in the boonies, they find the sister and use the, our car died, excuse on Missy. Okay. And hash, she shares how sad David's death was because obviously it was, and after his death, the guy named Billy blue paid his respects and they had a short fling where he was sweet on her, but that he also seemed uncomfortable around her. Like it was just too much and reminded her. Reminded him of Seva Navan.

Yeah.

Stephen

And I also love how Helen was like, we should really have a plan before going in to talk to Missy. Angela Landsbury would have had plan. And, you know, when Jody foster tried this, a serial killer answered

Steve

the door. Yes. Helen is the best. After this exchange, how in laments is really how they aren't close anymore saying we used to be best friends. And Julie says, well,

Stephen

we used to be a lot of things,

Steve

bitch, Helen wonders if David was waiting in the road to be hit because of his guilt over Susie's dad, math,

Stephen

I that's like a really good thought because. He seems to be in the middle of the road after a blind turn, like anybody that grew up with roads like that, like I did in West Virginia knows that, they're called blind turns and, to be extra careful. So it was very strange for him to be in the middle of the

Steve

road. Yes. Now, when Helen gets home, I'm surprised that. Blatantly her father ignores her. Like she goes in and he's sure her dad's watching sports and drinking, but like the fact that he doesn't even blink or like silly, like when she was like, Hey dad, like,

Stephen

so here's what I think a year ago. Yeah. Helen was probably his golden child. Yeah. Ms. Croker queen going to be a famous actress. He was probably doting all over on. When it didn't fall apart and he had to turn to Elsa to run the store. She became a nothing to him and now Elsa gets whatever attention he has possible

Steve

still. I don't know.

Stephen

And also interesting. Elsa obviously lives in the house with them and she is five years older. So Elsa is roughly 24. Nothing against the actress playing. She looks older than

Steve

24. Yeah. I can see that for sure. Now, while dad's watching sports to figure what the hook comes back into the home and hides in her claw Helen's closet, Elsa comes in and while Helen's brushing her hair and says you and your. So pathetic. Yep. That

Stephen

gives the fishermen an idea. After he watched Helen change and saw her get naked creep. Yes. And during the night cuts off, most of Helen terrible. She sleeps.

Steve

Yes. She wakes up wearing her Tiara to red lipstick on the mirror saying soon. Now, how could she have slept through this though? Really

Stephen

you're asking how someone could have slept through something. You you're asking

Steve

this to say, nevermind. I take that back now.

Stephen

I could not have slept

Steve

through it, I guess I might have, but I don't know. I mean, I feel like, I don't know. Anyway,

Stephen

this is, that's the reason we're going to survive a fire is because I would not sleep through

Steve

a fire. That's why I chose you babe. Now, what would your nightmare version of this be? Like, what could someone do to you in your sleep, where you'd wake up and be like, would it be your hair?

It

Stephen

wouldn't be my hair. Absolutely. Right here. What about

Steve

you? I, I, I don't know. I couldn't think of one, but I had a feeling like for you, or like you wake up and like you go into the bathroom and like all your hairsprays gone. You'd be like, yeah,

Stephen

I can get through a date without hairspray. But if someone had come in and like, Cut giant chunks down so that I would have to let go skin on the hair. Yeah, that would have been screaming. I

Steve

have dreams.

Oh

Steve

no. Yes. Now a while Julie drives to see Helen, she hears the sign of scrapes coming from her trunk. So she pulls over and finds dozens of crabs, crawling all over Max's dead body. And max is wearing Barry's jacket. She runs to grab Barry and Helen, but when they come back out, there's no sign of any thing having been in the trunk. And then we get Julie's like, huh? What are you waiting for? I love it.

Stephen

It's he's just watching and waiting. What are you waiting for? Huh?

Steve

What are you

Stephen

waiting for? And she spins around with her arms out and I love every second of it.

Steve

I know, but I also have to give the killer crops, unlike that was very proficient.

Stephen

Obviously there was a tarp that Julie didn't see, and. Because I'm guessing he laid the tarp down, laid the body down, covered it in crabs. And

Steve

then I was following her in a car behind her that she didn't see. Probably it's just, it seems like a lot of work for a quick thing, but I mean, I give him credit for pulling it off because it almost seems unbelievable. Like it's a movie or something.

Stephen

So they run into Ray and Barry blames him for it. Because he's a fishermen. And Ray says, I got a letter to guys and Barry says, well, that seems pretty balanced. Like I was hit by a car Helen's hair was cut off Julietta body and your trunk, but sure you got

Steve

a letter. Yes. They then posit that. It's probably the person doing it. And that we're sister Elsa might know him because Elsa and David Egan graduated the same year.

Stephen

And the look that Freddie Prinze Jr. Comes up Billy blue. Oh goodness.

Steve

Yes. And at this point, I mean, he's the reason why everything from here happens because if he had just said right then and there guys, I was really blue. I felt really guilty. So I visited her afterwards. They wouldn't have split up. They all would've gotten together. So, Julie and Ray would have been with a Berry and on the third floor. So that would have been three against one. Like none of this would have happened if not for Freddie prince string. You're keeping that secret. Here's the

Stephen

question. What was Ray doing while Helen and Barry were at the patch? He wasn't with

Steve

jewels. Yeah. I don't know. He just was like, there there's some missing gaps here and I'm going to love it for what it is, but like re

Stephen

Ray is definitely to blame for this. And now I can honestly say it's the men in this movie that are the reason why.

Steve

Yes exactly. Now during the parade, Helen's hair actually looks really it does

Stephen

Sarah Michelle Gellar wore that shorter cut extraordinarily well.

Steve

Yes. She's she's a suspicious figure in the crowd and Stansberry after him, he just tackles an innocent old man in a slicker.

Stephen

Well, Barry has gone. She sees the real first man on the roof and he gives her that slicing throat symbol

Steve

with

headline.

Steve

Yes. And during the beauty pageant, Helen is passing off the crown once after to the new winter where she sees the figure a gut Berry on the second floor, and

Stephen

she starts freaking out screaming and she's running to try to help Barry and the crowd block.

Steve

For reasons. Yeah. I don't get that. And the copper rings are up there and there's no visible sign of blood or struggle, except after they leave, there's like one drop coming down from something like onto the banister. Yeah. But I mean, he, again, really cleaned up really well, considering that it was like a minute or two after he killed someone and there was like hardly any blood and maybe

Stephen

like he didn't end up gutting berries.

Steve

Then I'm an error

Stephen

then and there, maybe he heading with the back of the hook and I don't know, but Julie goes back to Missy's house where she re Missy says that he left a suicide note. This. I will never forget. Last summer, Julie says that's not a suicide note. That's a

Steve

threat. Yes. At this point, miss, he also shares that he didn't have a tattoo on his arm, meaning that it wasn't David, that they hit, it ends up. It was Susie's father Ben Willis, who is also a fishermen and everything starts to come to focus for her. Oh my

Stephen

goodness. And here comes the best part of the movie. So the ignorant. Is taking Helen home when he stops. And so there's, I mean, the killer thought this through very thoroughly because he put out barricades in the road. The cop had to turn down an alley in the alley. The there's a truck with. Hood up and a motorist needing help. The cop gets out to help him. Helen realizes it's the fisherman. She's screaming. It's him. He turns around.

And then he turns back around and the fishermen guts him and he gets what's coming to him. Helen uses her feet to break the back window because she's in a cop car and they don't open. And she climbs out the window and runs to the department store for help. And there's so much tension right here because she's at the door, Elsa,

Steve

Elsa, Elsa. Let me in God,

Stephen

it opened the door. And then the Ben Willis is getting closer and closer. How's that? Let me in closer and closer. And Elsa is just taking her sweet. 'cause at first, she forgot her keys and had to go back for keys and he's getting closer and closer and he opens the door and she gets in

Steve

just in time. Yes. However, he also then sneaks in the back door, kills Elsa and Helen hears her scream, the killer then hides among the mannequins because of course he does. Yeah. Which

Stephen

like you see him before he jumps, but it's still effective.

Steve

Yeah, for sure. He tackles her then Helen runs to the back, whether she finds else's body and takes the lift upstairs. And as she's pulling it up, he's like trying to slash her feeds. And

Stephen

she jumped out a window into the alley, injuring her leg, and then she has to limp down the alley.

Steve

Yes. Towards the light of the fireworks and the sounds of the night parade and a fantastic chase scene that ultimately ends up with her being feet from the prey when he grabs and kills her. And she puts up hell, hell of a struggle in those tires as well.

Stephen

Okay. I have several questions. Yes. The parade was earlier, we saw her in it. Yes. What is this

Steve

second parade? This is the after parade parade, babe. It's a little town and

Stephen

it just seemed to like, is it just like, there was the nightly fireworks and the high school band decided to play as well, like type of thing. And. You know, it's all very sad. And what are all those tires doing? There? That's a lot of tires for the main

Steve

street. I don't know, but I'll take it. I mean, if she hadn't hesitated, she might've made it. But Dan, that chase scene and struggle at the end is one of like the highlights of the movie. Well, it's one of

Stephen

the most iconic things in horror movies. And if you ask anybody what horror victim, they wish hadn't died. Almost. Everyone's going to say it was Helen. And another sad thing is after the band on the street clears past where Helen was killed, we see Julie less than 50 feet away. Like she, Helen was almost to Julie almost it's like this day. Hurts me more than Sid's roommate and scream too. Oh,

Steve

well that's a lot too. Cause you really loved her. I did now Julie finds Ray and shares a revelation that though David Egan was found in the water. They hit Ben Willis and Ben Willis killed David Egan as revenge for the Carson that killed Susie. When.

Stephen

That's a lot of exposition right at the end, but it all makes sense. Yes.

Steve

While standing by his bodes really notices its name, Billy blue thinking he's the killer. She runs away when a man clotheslines Ray and ushers her onto the boat. He says, girl, yes, he's sails off where she finds all the evidence of Ben stocking them kids. Like

Stephen

you should be out having fun, drinking, partying. Running people

Steve

over getting away with murder, but they didn't murder him. They just dumped his body. When he was half alive into the water. I know eating him for that. It's different than murder babies should have been

Stephen

getting away with attempted murder.

Steve

Exactly right. Gets into a small motor boat to come and save her. At this point, Julie, should've just jumped overboard, but she

Stephen

wanted us to goodness. She grew up in a fishing village. Obviously she can smell.

Steve

Jump. Yes, no. Instead she runs and screams and hides. Ray makes it on board and he and Ben face off Julie screams and distracts Ray and he gets knocked off

the

Steve

boat like

Stephen

it's to goodness, it's her fault that he keeps getting beaten.

Steve

Which I mean, he has a coming. Yeah.

Stephen

But yes, Billy blue thing, he had it coming. Yep.

Steve

Yep. Julie goes through the engine room to the Bill's room. Yep. Where all the water is pumped out. Yup. Yup. And then to the ice storage where she finds Helen and Barry's bodies

Stephen

and it was right there that like, I don't know why the first time I was watching it, but I kept thinking maybe she's not. Maybe she didn't die. Maybe he's gonna just, take her and hold her captive at the end. But then when you see the body in it, it

Steve

hurt a little. Yes. Ray makes it back on the boat and there's more struggles and Ben is about to kill Julie with the hook

Stephen

when you leave a man for good. Make sure he's

Steve

really dead. Yes. When the hook Ben is holding gets caught on a rope that Ray releases resulting in a band losing his hand before being thrown out to see. And as the police

Stephen

say, well, you know, They'll probably find the body it'll wash up. They always do.

Steve

They never do cop

Stephen

except for David Egan his dad. But

Steve

yes. Now Ray explains why he didn't tell them about missing confesses, his love for Julie. And do we buy this?

Stephen

I do believe he's in love with Julie. I also believe that they did have a high school relationship. I don't see them as a long-term couple

Steve

me either. I mean, while Julie is thriving at college the next year, and it's declaring her love for Ray over the phone, even using the phrase ravaged me, which

Stephen

got a lot of. Laughs online.

Steve

Yes. Now, just as she's about to hop in the shower, she gets a letter she's about to freak out over only to find out it's an invite to a pool party and then nothing bad

Stephen

happens. Just kidding, because then she goes back into, to the bathroom and it's all foggy and steamy and someone has written on the glass. I still

Steve

know. Yeah. So you hear the spinning of the necklace and the figure jumps through the glass. Movie fades to black. And

Stephen

That totally gets me every

Steve

time. Yes. You jumped, even with this time run, we're writing it out and we knew it was coming. Yes. Now, what are your final thoughts on the movie? I love it.

Stephen

I have always loved it. Each time I watch it. I still thoroughly enjoy it. There are parts that I love. Like, I love the, what are you waiting for? Helen's chase scene. And, you know, I still wish that sometime when I watch it, she's going to live. Like, there's always that hope.

Steve

Yes. And what are your thoughts on Julie as a final girl?

Stephen

So obviously she makes it to the end. So technically she is a final. She doesn't do any of the fighting. She does not save herself or anyone else. She does figure out the plot and the murder. And so I do give her credit for that. So. But she's not a Laurie Strode or a Sydney Bristow. Yes. Not Sydney Bristow, Sydney, Prescott, Sydney. Burstows from alias.

Steve

Yes. Well she's neither of those Sydney's yes. Yeah, I definitely feel like she's a final girl in the definition of that. She starts off meek. She doesn't drink does have sex, but it's off camera. And she's the only one who really regrets what, like she read what happened deeply, horribly. And she has the brains of a final girl, but like no actions really, necessarily other than the fact that she survives. Right.

Stephen

I'm okay with that. I maybe all final girls don't have to be

Steve

super fat ass. Yes. I agree.

Stephen

Like she's she, she does more with her brain than

Steve

her bronze. Yes. Excellent. And so with that, I know girl,

Stephen

February is sadly over

Steve

what comes next. It's

Stephen

magical

Steve

March. Excellent. And so we look forward to that. Maybe we'll even invite all the horrors back. Oh,

Stephen

I would say that Ronnie Wilson diamond, the second is very excited to come back. Bridget McMullin is wanting to make a reappearance as. Do big fish. We're also going to highlight the craft practical, magic and star dust. So if you're looking forward to any of those,

Steve

tell us yeah. And watch them in advance. So you're ready for our discussion, but we'd love to hear from you. You can do that by reaching out to us via [email protected] or you can hit us up
