Episode description

Send us a text

Part 2 continues on from from last weeks episode (that we had to cut short due to waffling) where we discuss some of the funny symptoms we experience and debate if they are related to ADHD.

Shell speaks of some revealing “side effects” to do with her IBS that makes Sparky almost fall off his chair in hysterics! (We had to cut down the laughter because it went on for too long)

If you struggle with any of the symptoms mentioned please reach out to your local doctor. This is our journey to getting an official diagnosis, how we found out, how we feel, our frustrations, challenges and humour living with possible ADHD as an adult.

09 Welcome to dopamine kick, your weekly dose of positivity, where your host, Sparky and shell join us each week as we have changed your habits to tackle fears and change your mindset.

Sparky 0

20 Let's get to it.

Unknown Speaker 0

23 Hello and welcome to episode 41 27 of a dopamine kick. So for those of you who listen to last week's episode, you'll know that we cut things short because we were waffling on so we're gonna pick things up where we left off last time, so take it away sparking

Sparky 0

40

Okay, so what we're going to do is continue on from last week's episode I shall just said, if you're new here, please go back and listen to last week's episode because it will give this episode a little bit more context. So what we were talking about was ADHD. And the reason it was quick short was because we went on and on. And obviously, we had a lot to say on the topic. As you will know from listening to last week's episode. It's something that's very close to our hearts at the moment. So what we're going to do is jump straight back into where we left off that conversation. But before we do if you haven't already, please consider subscribing to the podcast or following us on whatever platform you are listening to. And this is a little bit of a play. If you haven't already, please please consider going on to Apple podcasts and giving us a review. Because the more reviews we get, the more our podcast will be pushed to potential listeners who are struggling with some of these issues and may need some help. So if you could go along to the review page, type in a couple of words about how you feel about the podcast, we would very much appreciate it. Now with that all out of the way. Let's jump straight back into where we left off last week. And I believe we were discussing symptoms and some of the stuff that we're struggling with currently, and possible ADHD diagnosis.

Unknown Speaker 1

57 I think it's worth as well mentioning that with us another bizarre similarity that we didn't know is we're both quite severely dyslexic and that's probably what caused us to not get a diagnosis or have any investigation as children. Because we were discussing last week when we how we both were quite hyper disruptive problems in school when we were kids, but it was just always put down to dyslexia, dyslexia, dyslexia,

Sparky 2

31 how do you make any sound like I was obnoxious at school like I was, I was

Unknown Speaker 2

38 not my peers, but I'm sure every teacher that I have hated me. I just did not want to be there. Unless I did you know, unless it was a subject that I happen to be slightly interested in. And then I was like, absolutely Uber nerd.

Sparky 2

56 Yeah, it was the same for me with art. So art I thought was absolutely amazing. hyperfocused on there. I loved it. I was a teacher's pet. I was like, Look at me. I can draw doing everything that I could to being like a star pupil. But then when it came to subjects such as I don't know for example, our re or maths, I was just a lost cause.

Unknown Speaker 3

21 I chopped and changed so I start remember as I started, I was really keen on math when I was first at school. And then I don't remember this, but apparently I had a math teacher that I really didn't like and after that I just never got back into math. The focus it was just me just just me all over like one slight little thing that didn't didn't quite go well. And I'm like wow, that's that

Sparky 3

49 Google, is that dead to me? An ADHD trait.

Unknown Speaker 3

54 I say it so much don't i I'm better now. I'm trying to say a lot less now. Trying to persist the things more. Yes.

Sparky 4

00 It is hold emotional. And that's why you say it's dead to me.

Unknown Speaker 4

10 No, it's awful because I know we said at the beginning that we hadn't diagnosed ourselves watching videos on Tiktok but since my therapist said I might have ADHD I have been looking at videos on Tiktok and so many times someone will be like, oh symptoms of ADHD and they'll list and I would I oh my god I did not even know like yes, I do that. I did not even know. 31 It was a thing.

Sparky 4

35 realisation Isn't it like you're like, Yeah, that's me. That's me. That's me. And you know what I could kind of understand if there was a couple of things in there that I thought that's not really like me, but it's everything. It's like

Unknown Speaker 4

47 there's this one guy in Australia. That is I sent you some of his videos and you didn't I and when I look at some of his stuff, I'm like, No, this is this guy's got a camera in my house somewhere. We just think

Sparky 5

02

it just came to my mind when we were talking about working better under pressure. I realised I always say to myself, I work well under pressure. But it's not because I work better under pressure is because I will literally not work until I'm under extreme pressure. So really, I don't work well under pressure. It's just that won't work. That's the only time you can. Yeah, is the only time Yeah, so I will literally do it. And we talked about this before in the podcast about caffeine. And you were saying how you know you should reduce your caffeine and stuff like that. But for me like when we were talking about it, I was always a little bit you know, erring on the side of caution with saying anything because I am addicted to caffeine and I don't know if this is an ADHD thing or you know this is quite normal, but I'm literally addicted to caffeine. So this new coffee shop is opened by me and the coffee is absolutely amazing. And I would just use any excuse that I can to go to the coffee shop, even if it means taking the dog for a walk. And it's so hard because it's like I'm obsessed. And I looked it up and it's it's all these things about addiction. And impulsivity and it's just

Unknown Speaker 6

18 self sabotage. And I don't know is that is that an ADHD symptom that is meant to be good for making you focus, isn't it for making an ADHD person focus?

Sparky 6

28 Well, we see I didn't know that. Maybe that's why

Unknown Speaker 6

31 I have a very fine balance with coffee. Well, I don't really like coffee that tea tea is my caffeine. But too much of it like I must be physically quite sensitive to it. If I drink two cups of Team reasonably quick succession. I start getting like heart palpitations, and I have IBS as well. So that's not pretty I have I have shipped myself before from drinking too much. Now I limit myself to one to conduct to carry on. That's really too good you do not know that.

Unknown Speaker 7

18 I've never told you that before don't worry, we'll just cut out the five minutes that you tapped out of the pond. I don't even know where to go from. 40 One of my symptoms are gonna match. 43 Well that's it that's IVs that's why 47 anyone with IBS knows they've been there. I guarantee it. I thought he said your symptoms were gonna match. He even got a timeframe on yours. I didn't want to say

Sparky 8

03 he's a pretty embarrassing thing to admit. Even though I know I can't stop.

Unknown Speaker 8

10 Bass bass. See, I didn't I didn't know it was gonna happen. Like, I reduced my tea drinking. I didn't keep drinking the tea. We like oh well. I'm watching myself today. I might not

Sparky 8

24

oh my god, what are the symptoms? It's so funny. I just I it's like when I have to take vitamins or tablets or anything like that, like I really struggle to kind of contact take them consistently so I just literally find myself staring at a bottle of pills or vitamins or something and not remembering if I've taught them or not like I'm just like, Have I taken these or have I not taken them? Because my memory I've noticed that is is getting poor and poor as I get older. Yeah, but I don't know. Again. I don't know if that's an ADHD thing. And these are all things now that are coming to me since like, kind of speaking to someone and kind of getting an idea about what what the season researching, like, as we said, looking at videos and stuff and I'm thinking yeah, that's me. And it's and it's just crazy because you don't like you said you don't think about these things until they're pointed out to me. But in a way I'm a bit relieved that. If I do have that I'm kind of relieved because it will kind of explain everything that I've been thinking and how I've struggled for for a large proportion of my life that I didn't even realise I was struggling with things.

Unknown Speaker 9

33 Yeah, I'd rather I'd rather have a diagnosis than just be a little bit weird and odd on my OB.

Sparky 9

38 Yeah. You've got problems and no one knows what it is. Yeah,

Unknown Speaker 9

44 no conflicts. You You are just broken. Better to have a nice little label to put on it. But I think we should probably wrap things off now.

Sparky 9

54

Oh, yeah, we can get we can talk about this forever and ever. Maybe because it's new and it's a hyper focus at the moment. So maybe that's why, but I did. I did want to mention something. So if you are struggling with any of these symptoms, it's important that you do reach out to somebody like we did go and go and go to the GP speak to a doctor about symptoms. There are a list of symptoms that you can have a look up NHS website, I'll sure put a link into our what's it called? Description shownotes that's the show notes and you can have a look on there. And also a book that I'm reading at the moment is called taking charge of adult ADHD by Russell Barkley and at the moment I haven't got very far buddy. You know whether I will finish it or not is another story. But it's really helping at the moment and I'm kind of understanding things. So a great book to start there as well. Going forward. Obviously, we will be focusing on some of the challenges and struggles that we do face every day and explaining what we experienced and also if you could reach out to us and let us know if you are struggling with any of these things. Or if you've had ADHD because I think it'd be really great to have somebody on the podcast that's actually got ADHD, maybe we can learn from it. Or maybe they can tell us their experiences as well. So I just think it will be great to have someone on so if you are if you if you're confident enough to come on to the podcast and you want to come on, send us a message and

Unknown Speaker 11

23 we'll sort it out. And we'll keep you updated with both committed that we're going to take this all way aren't we are we going to see whether or not we can go for a formal diagnosis. I mean, the procedure is quite long in the UK. The waiting list is about two years so this won't be a quick thing. But we're both going to do it so we'll gradually keep you updated as each

Sparky 11

44 each episode goes past. Alright guys, thanks for listening. And we'll see you again next week with another episode take care.

Sparky and Shell 11

51 All right, that's everything this week, guys, but if you want to carry on with the conversation, join us over on our social media platforms. We're on all the major channels and our handle is a dopamine kick. We'd also be super grateful if you could leave us a review on the podcast wherever you're listening, because it helps us grow our audience and help more people. Okay, we'll see you in the next one. Bye bye
