Episode description

Send us a text

We’ve previously talked about what self care is and why it’s important to practice it. In this episode we discuss a few potential ideas that you can to do to keep things interesting when it comes to caring for yourself.

One way is to treat yourself to things you’ve always wanted to do. Adding new and novel experiences to your self-care routine is like giving yourself a little gift every day. It’s a great way to stay motivated and to feel better about yourself.

We also discuss what we like and don’t like, self care is always going to be individual to you but it’s also important to try new things and push yourself out of your comfort zone. Something, we’ve found Sparky probably really needs to do more often too!

Happy listening.

12 Welcome to dopamine kick, your weekly dose of positivity. We're your hosts Sparky and shell. Join us each week as we have changed your habits, tackle fears and challenge your mindset.

Sparky 0

23 Let's get to it.

Shell 0

26 Hello everyone and welcome to episode 34 of a dopamine kick. Today we're going to be talking about trying something new to care for yourself today.

Sparky 0

36 If you haven't already, I know I say this all the time, but please consider subscribing to us. You can do that by clicking on a Follow button or a plus button on whatever platform you are listening to us on and stick around as always till the end for this week's little kicker. And speaking

Shell 0

52 of little kickers, our little kicker last week was the app Habitica. So we're really interested to hear if anyone's got any feedback on that whether or not they're completely addicted, if so, I apologise. But also if it's helped you with your daily habits at all. If you think it's making a difference, that'd be really good to know as well. Yeah,

Sparky 1

11

we're always looking for feedback on the podcast. So if you have any feedback or you've got anything to say, and don't forget to check out our links in the show notes and send us a message and let us know how you're feeling because we'd love to hear it. So last week, we shared ways to get started with self care and creating habits and adding activities into your diaries and calendars so that you can increase your chances of sticking into a new routine. So let's talk about that, shall we? Let's talk about ways that we can keep things interesting to treat yourself and things that you've always wanted to do. So adding a new experience to your self care routine is like giving yourself a little gift every single day. It's a great way to stay motivated and to do things to care for yourself. So we're going to talk about more about that later on on the show. And we're going to talk about new ideas and things that you can try just to give you a little bit of inspo but before we get into the inspirational bit, let's get on to the science bit. And Charles got another study for you this week. Yeah,

Shell 2

21

so this is building on the previous studies as well. So I'm just sort of really hammering home how important self care is with just multiple multiple sets of evidence. So this study is called when college students look after themselves, self care practices. And wellbeing. So the study is about the behaviours that underlie well being. Because it's known already research has shown time and time again that psychological well being is positively associated with human engagement, persistence and performance. So basically, what that means is, the better you are mentally the better you perform in academic life, and I think we could be reasonably confident in saying that spills over to non students as well their professional life. So they had 206 students. They were mostly female, and they completed measures of wellbeing and self care practices. They actually did six self care practices, and four of them so the four important ones were mindful acceptance, seeking social support, sleep hygiene, and food habits. And they found that those four practices uniquely predicted wellbeing. So the students that were more sort of in tune with that actively, actively sort of trying to improve that aspect of their life or maintain a sort of self care rituals around those were psychologically

Sparky 3

57 better. Wow. Okay, so I guess we should talk about some new things to try that. And yeah, this is just

Shell 4

05 really, I suppose, like a brain dump of ideas. So like we said, in the last episode, we're not going to give you a how to guide on doing self care, because it just wouldn't work for you. So this is just to give you this is just a load of different ideas that we've had, that you could consider implementing or sort of slightly changing to make your own and making them part of your self care routine.

Sparky 4

30

So the last episode we talked about how you can self indulge and pamper yourself, and how it makes us feel, makes us feel good. So the first one on our list is pampering yourself because it makes you feel good. And there's many different things that you can do to pamper yourself, but pampering is also a go to for many people when it comes to their self care routine. Because we think to ourselves when anyone mentioned self care, especially to me anyway, always think well, it's about pampering yourself, isn't it? That's basically what you think you think cucumbers on your eyes, you think facemask relaxing music,

Unknown Speaker 5

05 nothing I want to be part of your self care routine. That sounds like fun.

Sparky 5

09 But that's what you think of it. Yeah. The goal here is to think of something that you've never done before. It doesn't have to be expensive. It doesn't have to cost the earth basically. But a small act of indulgence can have a massive effect as an extravagant one like I just said, like I was just literally telling Cheryl like basic things their face mask, bit of music. Yeah, it sounds really extravagant, doesn't it?

Shell 5

32 No, I know what you mean. Like it's it's sort of like it's it's things that you could do quite easily in your own home. But then it's easy to sort of downplay how good it can make you feel. Yeah,

Sparky 5

43 that's basically what I was trying to say but shall just put it a little bit more eloquently than

Shell 5

49 I'm really looking forward to another sparkies monologue we haven't had for a while you've been like,

Sparky 5

53 just need to roll me up to Romeo's

Shell 5

57 direction that you're passionate about and just watch the magic happen.

Sparky 6

01 Well, I mean, the next one is considering scheduling a manicure and since I've never had a manicure I was waiting for Cheryl to say this because I don't even know that one of those. Well I do is that when you get your nails

Unknown Speaker 6

11 done, yeah, we now stone Yeah. So you could

Sparky 6

15 consider having a manicure or scheduling one of those. A bubble bath with candles is something really soothing. And you know, some of that you don't do very often that can feel really special. You can get those bath bombs. Those are quite nice, you know? Not really.

Unknown Speaker 6

35 I feel like you're struggling with this.

Sparky 6

39 I mean, I don't I don't have molecules. I really care about public baths.

Shell 6

43 But that's why maybe you should think about trying it like you've never had a molecule so maybe you should get on like it doesn't really need to end up with meals. Yeah. But they feel nice because it's someone like you know, pampering your hands and stuff like you don't have to have nail polish on afterwards. It's just about

Sparky 7

01 no I just I just feel that sometimes. You remember when you do suggested it Papoose. I mean, I've got Papoose manicure what's going to be there? What we

Unknown Speaker 7

12 should totally do this. So from a salon

Sparky 7

18 What am I doing? Getting a manicure? Yeah,

Unknown Speaker 7

21 I think it'd be great. Live reaction.

Sparky 7

24 Okay, right. So I will do one thing that you've that you've suggested. To me if I can, at some point, suggest something that you've got to do as well. Trying something new. Okay. Yeah, I'm done that will. Rarely are you really gonna do it. Okay. So I'm going to think of something that's so bad

Shell 7

48 in the in the bracket self care it's got to be it's got to be in the bracket itself. Okay. You can't like I don't know. Maybe you go to me and muddy water or something like it has to. That's self care.

Sparky 8

03 What your workout What if I like doing that sort of stuff? fucky.

Unknown Speaker 8

09 You couldn't, you couldn't go for a daily five minute walk. I'm pretty confident that you don't like open waters when

Sparky 8

18 you're talking about trying something new. And I've always wanted to do like an assault course through the more whatever you do, you've just got to make sure that your budget allows. If so, for example, a spa day with a friend could rejuvenate the way you feel it could make you feel better about yourself and you can actually

Shell 8

40 get them at very reasonable value. Probably not I would say from the like individual spa directly. I don't know I've never tried that but like if you go on like Groupon wowcher places like that they often have them for like insane prices like the same price that you would pay for you know, a fancy meal. You can spend an entire day at a spa, which for me is just like, insane when you think about it. Oh,

Sparky 9

07 and here's a pro tip. Usually places actually do free day passes. So you can ring up membership teams at the gym and or the spiral wherever you're going and ask them if you can have a free day pass. So that's something that something that you can actually ask for then

Shell 9

23

you could even just go for free with exactly minimal minimal cost, just the transport. So yeah, I think something like that is really good. It's just these are just sort of ideas in the realm of pampering yourself. There's other things that you might you know, want to do. You know, some people find things like getting their hair done, or they you know, potentially that starting to get a bit pricey, I suppose it depends a little bit as well on where your budget is. You know, you have a substantial disposable income. You probably do have a wider range of options to you. But I guess we just wanted to make it really clear that even if your budget is super, super low or zero, there are still things that you can do just in your own home to make yourself feel sort of pampered and better.

Sparky 10

13

Number two, which is the second part of this list that we've got for you today is just to celebrate today. So I'm really bad at doing this. Most of us don't buy ourselves presents. And we very often give ourselves any sort of tree I mean, there's times where I've not bought myself anything for a long time. And you know sometimes we do need to do this because it makes us feel good about ourselves. It makes us realise that we are special. We do deserve to buy ourselves something we go out we work we work hard and we deserve to have some special treatment.

Shell 10

49

Yeah, and it doesn't like it's something that you can change straightaway. And, again, it doesn't have to be phenomenally expensive. Yeah. So I would say think of something that's within your budget that you've been wanting for a while and then give yourself permission to go and buy it. Obviously, this is not something that you're going to repeat like weekly because you're going to end up with a load of stuff and need to declutter and probably not have any money, but just as a one off. I think that's something that can really go a long way to making you feel a lot brighter. So I don't know maybe it's like a new pair of shoes that you've had your eye on or like a phone upgrade that would make your life easier. Just giving yourself a gift doesn't matter how small it is, can be a real boost to your self worth.

Sparky 11

41

Maybe it doesn't maybe it doesn't even have to be like an actual gift. Like is in a physical item. It could be food as well. You could buy yourself somebody who was really wanted to eat or you know maybe you've got some chocolates in mind that are crazy expensive. And you want to you want to buy them I mean, there's loads are these dairy free chocolates that I really, really wanted to buy but they're crazy expensive. And most of the time I say to myself, I'm not going to buy those but why not? Do you know what I mean? Do it by yourself something because you are important enough to buy yourself something

Shell 12

19

I think it's important to enjoy the little things as well. That's something that we're going to keep revisiting. Self Care just doesn't need to be on a grand scale. You know, the tiniest things can be the most meaningful and whether that is like indulging in small or low cost treats. And you know, potentially if they are low cost, and that means that you can do it more often than if you were to do sort of big grand gestures. I guess what I'm trying to say is if you have your self care routine, if something really expensive, that say you can only afford to do very infrequently. I don't know maybe you really like having your hair dial a certain way. But you could only afford to have it done like once or twice a year. Then what happens when you're struggling and you still you can't afford that. So I think it's really important to have things in your arsenal that you can just always do no matter what's going on in your life, you know, not budget dependent. So like other little things that you can do is I think it goes back to again two things that you've ever done before. Like have you ever bought yourself flowers. That's one that I came across that I thought was silly really. I people have bought flowers from before and I've really enjoyed them, but I have not bought them for myself. And flowers are not particularly expensive. Yes, if you get a giant bouquet obviously they are but if you just get like a small bandage from the local store, they're not that expensive. But actually they they do like make you smile like having them on your desk or your kitchen table. They do sort of like really seemed to brighten up the room and make you feel happy. I mean, as you can see I'm a bit plant obsessed anyway. Yeah, that's just like a little one that I thought like, seems so silly, but actually when I tried it, I did really enjoy it.

Sparky 14

21

Oh yeah, I was just about to say that. People think yourself Well, other people should buy you flowers. But why? Like, I buy myself plants for the garden all the time or plants for the house all the time. What's the difference like buying yourself? Flowers, anything like that doesn't have to mean that you're lonely or that no one's no one is treating you it means that you're treating yourself you know, so reframe it look at it as though I want those flowers. I'm going to buy those flowers. I deserve those flowers.

Shell 14

51

And another example that I came up with, this is not one that I've done but I just thought be a really cute idea is if you've got like a particular food that you like, to sort of maybe incorporate that so. So for example, my sister absolutely adores chocolate. She's completely obsessed with it. It's the one thing that she could never give up. Suddenly, something that I thought maybe she could do is go to a chocolate shop and they always have like the little truffles don't know and they're like crazy expensive if you buy like a whole box of them, but if you just buy one and not too bad. So like something that she could do self care routine for her. Could be once a week. She tries a new truffle.

Sparky 15

47 Yeah, something different. Yeah, something

Shell 15

49 different. And you know it's not a high cost. It's just a little something. It's not going to be particularly effective, or anything like that, because it's just one single travel. But she's going to be like, excited about it every week like thinking about, you know which one she's going to try that's going to have a positive effect on the rest of the week because she's going to be, you know, excited for it. And then when she goes it does it and she's gonna be all happy. And it's

Sparky 16

19

about it's about adding new experiences as well. So that's self care routine. So as we discussed, trying these different things, these new things which keeps it interesting and also makes them more meaningful as well, you know, plus, it's it's a lot of fun, isn't it? That's yeah, it's fun to do. I mean, it's going to be so much fun seeing you do something that you don't really want to do, but I'm going to I'm going to try and keep southcare in mind, I promise. So let's get on to our little kicker this week to pick up is a challenge. And I guess this is going to be the first of many challenges in the self care series because we want you to not only listen to the podcasts, but we want you to implement them as well and you can always just listen and go away and that's fine if that's what you want to do. But we do encourage you to get involved in any challenges or anything that we do do when it comes to our little kickers because we just think it's fun to try different things as we were just talking about there. Try new things. So try the challenge. So shall what's the challenge for this week. So

Shell 17

21 this week's challenge is going to be to try one type of self care this week that you have not done before. And you know, I'm just going to put it out there we said that we were going to do this as well, and social media. So you know, maybe this is a time to stop looking at Monica. Okay,

Sparky 17

45 can we do somewhere else? Like can I can I do something else? Just because I agree. I agree with the whole situation of doing something new right and trying different things, expanding your horizon and all that but for me, I would feel very, very uncomfortable for a manicure. I just think it would make me feel less self carry and more self, Haiti. I just feel this is torture.

Shell 18

15 Let's start with something a bit smaller, and then progress up to the manicure.

Sparky 18

20 Okay, yeah. What do you have anything in mind or you can ever think about? No, I'll let you I'll let you come up with your own. I think it's about time to end that episode there. Anyway guys, we shall see you next time for another episode of dopamine kick. Take care. All right. That's everything this week, guys, but if you want to carry on with the conversation, join us over on our social media platforms. We're on all the major channels and our handle is at a dopamine kick. We'd also

Unknown Speaker 18

51 be super grateful if you could leave us a review on the podcast. Ready and listening because it helps us to grow our audience and help more people. Okay, we'll see you in the next one. Bye bye
