This is the story of the three ciphertexts originating from an 1885 pamphlet called The Beale Papers, detailing treasure being buried by a man named Thomas J. Beale in a secret location in about 1820. Amateur treasure hunters, mathematicians, and even the NSA have been trying (and failing) to crack these codes ever since.
