St Peter appears tempted to compare himself (unfavourably) with St John by the Sea of Galilee. Jesus tells him to avoid doing this. We can learn from this to avoid comparing ourselves with others.

Jesus’ invitation to St Peter in today’s Gospel of “Follow me” is our invitation to follow Our Lord all the way to Heaven. However, this is not easy as we face many challenges and sufferings of all sorts on our way. But we are called to follow Jesus with love and joy all the way through the sufferings we endure to the eternal joy of Heaven.

Jn 17:20–26 Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed saying: “I pray not only for them, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me. And I have given them the glory you gave me, so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may be brought to perfection as one, that the world may know that you sent me, and t...

The first words of Jesus after the Resurrection to all his Apostles together were: "Peace be with you... Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven. If you retain the sins of any, they are retained". Forgiveness and peace come together. On the anniversary of my ordination, I thank God for being a witness to the struggles and fights, the humility and sorrow of so many people who come to confession to show their love for God and receive the Love of God.

In today's first reading Paul asks, 'did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?' The people he's talking to tell him they'd never even heard of the Holy Spirit! Even though we've heard of the Holy Spirit, our own lived experience of Him can be minimal, such that we may not know how to answer Paul's question if he asked us. We pray today about how to make this Gift of God very welcome in our lives.

Here's my meditation for Saturday 20th May. “Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full” (Jn 16:23). Christian life is about joy. Indeed, joy is the sign of true Christianity. And in our Christian life we need to be attentive to how God speaks to us through the ‘parable’ of daily life.

"Your sorrow will turn into joy." These words of Jesus contain a deep spiritual lesson. With true love nothing is ever lost. The greatest joys are often preceded by long bouts of difficulty and sadness. Like recording a meditation that is offensive to people who know English.

Acts of the Apostles 1:12-14: After Jesus was taken up into heaven the Apostles went back from the Mount of Olives, as it is called, to Jerusalem, a short distance away, no more than a sabbath walk; and when they reached the city they went to the upper room where they were staying; there were Peter and John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Jude son of James. All these joined in continuous prayer, together with several ...

St. Paul is a model of how to be an apostle in every circumstance. While waiting I. Athens and trying to stay out of trouble he is moved to start evangelizing. His discourse at the Areopagus is a model of speaking in a way that is very human and very divine.

The Holy Spirit helps us to be faithful to the Lord in keeping his commandments not because we have to be perfect but we seek mercy at the promptings of the Spirit to fill the gaps caused by sin. We see in the life of St Gianna Molla one who was faithful to the commandments right to the end

We can sometimes forget about some of the Apostles, who seem to slip under the radar a bit. Today we can reflect on Philip and James. “There are many rooms in my father’s house … I am going now to prepare a place for you”. In today's gospel (John 14:1-6) Jesus encourages us to hope for heaven. He is there in heaven preparing for each one of us a special room in the Father's house, suited to our temperament and spirituality, with even more love than a mother prepares the bedroom of her son or dau...

While minding his own business in the temple, Jesus is cornered by the crowd demanding answers. We can have these types of conversations frequently as well as his disciples, where people approach us in any circumstance demanding answers to questions of faith. Ultimately it is by being inside the family, and part of the flock of the good shepherd that provides the reason behind all that we believe.

People walked away from Jesus when he spoke about the Eucharist. I can emulate St. Peter: "Lord, who shall I go to? You have the message of eternal life, and I believe, I know that You are the Holy One of God." Peter is a friend and consoles Jesus by being there for Him. That’s what we do when we pray for 10 minutes every day. We too can console Him by being there.
