St Peter appears tempted to compare himself (unfavourably) with St John by the Sea of Galilee. Jesus tells him to avoid doing this. We can learn from this to avoid comparing ourselves with others.
Jesus’ invitation to St Peter in today’s Gospel of “Follow me” is our invitation to follow Our Lord all the way to Heaven. However, this is not easy as we face many challenges and sufferings of all sorts on our way. But we are called to follow Jesus with love and joy all the way through the sufferings we endure to the eternal joy of Heaven.

The first words of Jesus after the Resurrection to all his Apostles together were: "Peace be with you... Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven. If you retain the sins of any, they are retained". Forgiveness and peace come together. On the anniversary of my ordination, I thank God for being a witness to the struggles and fights, the humility and sorrow of so many people who come to confession to show their love for God and receive the Love of God.

In today's first reading Paul asks, 'did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?' The people he's talking to tell him they'd never even heard of the Holy Spirit! Even though we've heard of the Holy Spirit, our own lived experience of Him can be minimal, such that we may not know how to answer Paul's question if he asked us. We pray today about how to make this Gift of God very welcome in our lives.

Here's my meditation for Saturday 20th May. “Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full” (Jn 16:23). Christian life is about joy. Indeed, joy is the sign of true Christianity. And in our Christian life we need to be attentive to how God speaks to us through the ‘parable’ of daily life.

We can sometimes forget about some of the Apostles, who seem to slip under the radar a bit. Today we can reflect on Philip and James. “There are many rooms in my father’s house … I am going now to prepare a place for you”. While minding his own business in the temple, Jesus is cornered by the crowd demanding answers. We can have these types of conversations frequently as well as his disciples, where people approach us in any circumstance demanding answers to questions of faith. Ultimately it is by being inside the family, and part of the flock of the good shepherd that provides the reason behind all that we believe.
On the feast day of St. Joseph the Worker we can recall that most of the working life of this great saint was monotonous, a lot of the same old thing. Yet he worked with the joy of meeting Jesus there! In this Easter time we ask for the grace to not be bored, but alive with the divine game to joyfully find Jesus, the risen Lord, in our daily work.
"I am the door", Jesus introduces himself and could ask, "You, a thief, robber or a good shepherd"? The difference is clear - access through him alone.
People walked away from Jesus when he spoke about the Eucharist. I can emulate St. Peter: "Lord, who shall I go to? You have the message of eternal life, and I believe, I know that You are the Holy One of God." Peter is a friend and consoles Jesus by being there for Him. That’s what we do when we pray for 10 minutes every day. We too can console Him by being there.
