Global Health, Conflicts, and Americas

Nations HIV AIDS Agency Director Winnie Byanyima has said that she expects the number of deaths caused by AIDS to multiply over the next four years because of massive cuts in funding from the United States. Yannima, who is from Uganda, told The Guardian that seeing the impact of the cuts made by the government of Donald Trump has been the

worst experience of her life. Last week, a United Nations report said that the abolition of USAID risks causing forty seen million deaths over the next five years, with four million of these caused by AIDS. In Kenya, the family of a police officer who disappeared while working in Haiti are demanding information about what happened to him. Some local reports from Haiti say that Benedict Courier died when his group were attacked by gang members. However, Kenya's police say

that they are still searching for him. Kenya is leading an international mission to help the Haitian government retake control of Haiti, which is largely controlled by gangs. Most of the international force is made up of Kenyan police officers Americas. In the United States, at least seventy people have died and more are missing in floods in Texas. The flash floods mostly happened on Saturday, when extreme rain caused the Guadaloupe River to overflow and flood many low lying areas.

Also in the United States, the world's richest person, Elon Musk, has started his own political party called the America Party. Colombia's police say that they have arrested a man who convinced a fifteen year old boy to shoot the Senator Miguel Uribe one month ago, who remains in a serious condition in hospital. Police say that Elder Hernandez is charged with attempted homicide and use of miners for the commission

of crimes. In Peru, there has been anger at the decision to double the salary of President Dina Bolvarte, despite her having historically low approval ratings, with some polls showing only two percent of people support her. The new salary is thirty five thousand, five hundred solis per month, which is around eight thousand five hundred euros Asia and Oceania.

In India, thousands of people took part in a celebration of the Dalai Lama's ninetieth birthday this weekend. The fourteenth Dalai Lama was born in nineteen thirty five in Tibet and was recognized as the Dalai Lama when he was four. He has been in exile in India since nineteen fifty nine, nine years after the communist Chinese forces took control of Tibet.

The United States. Actor Richard Gere, who is a Buddhist and has been an advocate of Tibetan rights for decades and is banned from China, was at the celebration in Daramshala.

Israeli airstrikes killed at least thirty eight people in Gaza yesterday, according to hospitals. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to visit US President Trump in Washington today, and indirect talks between Israel and Hamas are expected to take place today in Katar. In Australia, a synagogue was deliberately set on fire in Melbourne on Friday night. The twenty people inside were all able to escape without injury, and a

thirty four year old man has been arrested. Police said there has been a sharp rise in anti Semitic incidents in Australia since the start of the Gaza War. A Jewish restaurant was also vandalized on Friday. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said that the attack on the Sine was an attack on Australia.

In the United Kingdom, airport staff are receiving cash bonuses for charging customers extra for bringing cabin bags that are too big onto planes, according to the British newspaper The Sunday Times. Journalists for The Times said that since November twenty twenty three, staff working for EasyJet have been earning one pound twenty in commission for each person who they were able to catch with a cabin bag bigger than is allowed, EasyJet charges the customer forty eight pounds about

fifty five euros. The Netherlands and Germany's military intelligence agencies have said that Russia is frequently using chemical weapons in Ukraine. Dutch Defense Minister Reuben Breegelmanns said that there should be more sanctions on Russia because of the constant use of chemical weapons, saying quote, Russia's use of chemical weapons in

this war is becoming more normalized, standardized and widespread. In Italy, an explosion at a petrol station in Rome has injured over forty people, with two men in a life threatening condition. Many of the injured people are firefighters and police because they were attending the scene to attempt to extinguish a fire. And in France, the River sen In in Paris has been opened for swimming for the first time in over one hundred years. Swimming in the seen had been banned

since nineteen twenty three because of poor hygiene. However, measures were taken to improve the quality of the water for Olympic swimming events last year and have continued, including improving water treatment facilities and eliminating ways in which sewage water enters the river.
