Episode description
Lauren Bay-Regula is a mother of three, a business owner, and a two-time Olympian who is currently training for her third Olympic appearance on the Canadian softball team. She and her husband, Dave Regula, have experienced the difficulty of maintaining your body, your mind, your business, and your family all at the same time. You don’t want any of those plates to drop, but it’s a struggle keeping them all in the air at the same time. And things didn’t always go well. There were some dark years in there, and depression put up one hell of a fight. But because they had each other — and because they were willing to put aside their egos and ask for help — both Lauren and Dave are still spinning those plates and crushing every aspect of their lives. We often put Olympic athletes up on a pedestal, like their lives are somehow different than ours. But Lauren reminds us that being an Olympian, being a parent, being a business owner — it’s all hard, it’s all worth doing, and we often don’t give ourselves enough credit for making it through some tough shit. We Discuss: 00:02:30 - The parents who taught Lauren that sports are play 00:05:30 - Why “you want to be an athlete, you don’t want to be a softball player or basketball player,” and how parents are pushing their children to play sports in potentially unhealthy ways 00:13:05 - Life as an Olympic softball player + meeting her husband 00:15:25 - Coming out of retirement to pitch in the world championships as a 35-year-old mother of three 0016:30 - Lauren walked away from softball and didn’t play for eight years — so why did she decide to come back? 00:20:00 - How a difficult move led to the lowest point of Lauren and Dave’s life together 00:25:40 - Making it through seven long years of postpartum depression 00:30:50 - The part of depression that we almost never hear about 00:39:00 - The unreasonable expectation that mothers should have motherhood all figured out 00:43:10 - Letting go of the past to live in the present 00:53:00 - Going back to the Olympics for the 3rd time 00:59:30 - Actively working on your relationship and being willing to have conversations that suck 01:08:00 - What and who are driving Lauren and Dave to keep going 01:14:10 - “When you criticize your children, they don’t stop loving you — they stop loving themselves.” 01:16:25 - Strong Mom Strong Family 01:27:00 - The importance of finding your tribe Resources: Join Lauren’s FB Group: Strong Mom Strong Family (https://www.facebook.com/groups/193749661226193/) Download the Strong Mom Strong Family Free Guide (https://jointrakathletics.com/secrets-of-a-strong-mom36004348) Finding Mastery Podcast (https://findingmastery.net/category/podcasts/) Connect with Lauren Bay-Regula: Website | trakathletics.com (https://trakathletics.com/) Instagram | instagram.com/laurenregula (https://www.instagram.com/laurenregula/) Facebook | facebook.com/people/Lauren-Bay-Regula/100008001136700 (https://www.facebook.com/people/Lauren-Bay-Regula/100008001136700) Connect with Cal: Website | https://www.thegreatunlearn.com (https://www.thegreatunlearn.com/) Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/bunkercal/ (https://www.instagram.com/bunkercal/) Twitter | https://twitter.com/BunkerCal (https://twitter.com/BunkerCal) Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/BunkerCal (https://www.facebook.com/BunkerCal) YouTube | The Great Unlearn (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCneI0an6qiL7t-7sne9TjhQ) Subscribe to the Great Unlearn Podcast: Apple Podcasts | https://apple.co/3a4ATpc (https://apple.co/3a4ATpc) Spotify | https://spoti.fi/2Rb7emv (https://spoti.fi/2Rb7emv) Google Play | http://bit.ly/2sehHUE (http://bit.ly/2sehHUE) Stitcher | http://bit.ly/2t8wHE6 (http://bit.ly/2t8wHE6) If you are called to support the podcast, please share the show with a...
