This is Zombies Ate My Podcast.
Hello and welcome to Zombies 8 My Podcast. I'm your host, Ryan Murphy, and joining me as always is the busy zombie lord Lou Page. How's it going, Lou?
I'm thinking about zombies in a new light after this.
That's right. We are talking about uh well, we're talking about twenty-eight years later the bone temple. I don't know why the thought left my mind and I had to check the notes, but that is indeed what we're talking about, the follow-up. Two twenty eight years later, not even a year. We were doing the math pre show and we eventually got to seven months was the difference between the two.
We'll be talking about that later on and uh a sequel that I I think, you know, as we said earlier pre show is like I think maybe arrived too soon and that probably was was what caused the sort of issue with the the box office. Um That being said, we do have some hopeful news about the part three we should be getting uh in the next couple years. So we'll talk about that in the news. Um but yeah, why don't we just uh why don't we just jump into the news?
Not there.
The virus has completely devastated over 150 of the world's major regions and is spreading rapidly.
All right, first up we've got uh a trailer for Evil Dead Burn, which you may be wondering, wait. Didn't you talk about that last episode? And I would say yes. Yes we did. But that was a teaser. This is a trailer. Or maybe it was a release of the Confirmation. Either way, we've got an official trailer to talk about.
So when we covered was a teaser. It was a small one-minute clip from the movie. This is an actual trailer with some plot in it.
I would argue this gives away a lot. Yeah, uh not in not in the sense of what's happening, but in the sense of uh the fates of our characters because there's a lot of Lot of death and mayhem present in this trail.
Yeah, I I would say that was kind of my only gripe with this move this trailer is you see a bunch of people in what seems like situations where they're going to die. And I was like, That's a little too much. Um I think that, you know, they reveal one character is dead and is like the coming back dead. And I was like, okay, cool. Um, this whole thing has me pumped. Uh sign me up. Let me get my tickets now. I'm ready to go. This is Evil Dead.
Yeah. I mean, to the point where I was like, this might be a bit too much for me. Too much Evil Dead. This was a a lot to deal with.
Yeah. That remake from what was it, 2013 or 2014, that dipped too much into like body horror for my taste. There was too much of It was okay. I didn't love it. Um I liked the last one, Evil Dead Rise was cool. Um and it was good. This looks like they're trying to remake Evil Dead in a new light and do something which will be interesting and new with it. And it has the feeling of the first evil dead.
And maybe not the cheesiness of the second. And I'm okay with that as long as I get the vibe and the feeling of Evil Dead. And I think that that's what this trailer gave me. And I was like, okay, I'm in. This looks awesome.
Well yeah, you even see it with the camera pans and stuff that they were doing at the beginning of the trailer.
And listeners of the show should know me. I don't say that say stuff like that lightly, so
No, no. And this isn't just because we've gotten two trailers in three weeks. This is uh this is a solid trailer.
The tr first trailer w piqued my interest. I was like, cool. I'm curious. It makes me think of Evil Dead. Yeah, there's something weird going on. Cool. I'm interested. I watched this trailer and I went, okay, not just interested. Now I'm ready to I'm ready for the uh ready for release date. Let's get this going.
Yeah. Well July 9th, it's around the corner. Summer is nearly here, and this'll be a good summer movie to see, especially if you're into zombies. Um I will say that Uh there was one thing that caught my ear while I was listening to the trailer, and that was the case uh it's very family focused. It's a family it's not a movie for the family. Do not take your family to this movie unless they're all over the age of I don't know.
thirteen, fifteen. I how old do you need to be to s see a horror film? I'm getting to the point where my oldest is ten and he is able to to punch above his age uh for movies in the sense that he will sit through and watch what some kids would consider boring, like Apollo uh eleven, no, Apollo thirteen. Um, he will watch uh more thriller horror focused stuff. Like he watched the Five Nights at Freddy's that he was very into that. We watched the original Jaws.
But he's not uh he's not quite there for like straight up horror like zombies and and whatnot. He's not there just yet. Um, but this so what what I'm trying to the taking from the joke and moving back to my point, um it's a family movie in the sense that it's based around this family, they're dealing with grief, but they talk about a grandfather who
may or may not have known about the Necronomicon and that death would return and do you do you think they're kind of hinting at a connection to previous evil dead lore with this? Or do you think it's just random? No.
It's just random. Okay. Um, I I uh my understanding of this new trilogy that they're doing is that they're not tied to each other via characters. It's more of a theme. And I think that the theme is the book and that somebody does something they shouldn't and it brings the dead back and then then the craziness happens. I think that this is I think that that's the theme going for each one. It may if this it this even got me excited for what the next one is. Cause if what Rise did is good.
And this has me excited and if this is as good as it looks. Then that means the the third one would be high potential. You know what I mean? It has the potential to be just as good. So we'll see.
Yeah. Yeah. We won't have long to wait to find out. July ninth in theaters.
Uh well the new the next one is filming now, I believe, so
What was that one called again? We have a title for it. Evil Dead Rise Burn.
And then
Yeah. I'm looking it up because'cause we have access to this thing called the internet. I know it's been talked about. Maybe Burn is the is the extra one. No? Never mind. Evil Dead Wrath. is the next uh film.
That's why I can't remember it is it's rise, burn, and then wrath. And when I think and and wrath sounds too much like rise, so I keep getting them confused.
Yeah, that one's out in twenty twenty eight. So, you know, every couple of years.
Pretty cool.
It's like every two.
Yeah, yeah, for sure. So uh we'll we'll we'll cover this one. I don't know if I'm gonna rush out to theaters to see it, but uh we'll definitely watch it when it's available to rent andor streaming. So stay tuned for that. Man, you're the zombie. I think this is happening. Like we've we've consistently been able to slot in new content. more often than not, so this is very cool.
That is that is not the walking dead, which is nice.
Can you believe we used to do this weekly where we talk about a single Walking Dead episode every week? I mean that was when we had more time. You know, and we had more co hosts. Yeah.
Uh I would I would beat my head against the wall now if we did that.
Yeah, it's a different time. Um but Let's talk about another new thing that we spoke to previously on the topic, which is Resident Evil Requiem. It got its promised uh mini-game DLC, but really it's an update. Um it is not mercenaries mode, but very close to it. It is called Leon Must Die Forever. And it is focused on the combat of Resident Evil Requiem, specifically Leon's combat.
And it is a roguelike set of levels featuring enemies and environments as you move through with random weapons and special abilities, leading towards the boss uh Victor, who's the final boss. So it's a combat challenge thing where you only play as Leon, as opposed to mercenaries, which was like an arcade arena fighter. Yeah. But you had different characters you could play as, so a little different
Knowing what it is now and whatnot, I'm it's great that they're still putting out content. It makes up for all the multiplayer modes they didn't put in past games in the last few years. And uh It definitely makes me wanna uh makes me glad I didn't uninstall it yet.
I'm
Looking forward to trying it. Uh currently I'm playing Seros on the PlayStation, which is a game that is very much about, you know, doing it's a it's also a roguelike, uh where you're doing runs and trying to progress the story and and uh increase your pair your uh player power levels. So I haven't had the chance to kind of like jump out and jump into Resident Evil. But I look for next episode I will play it and we will we will chattle it.
I think that...
That's that's totally reasonable. So this just launched I think As of this recording maybe like No.
I don't even think it's been a full week. I think it's only been like four or five days top.
Exactly. Hasn't been long. So uh if you're looking for more Resident Evil Requiem content, you really love the combat and you're uh in love with Leon like I am, this is a perfect new mode for fans of the Uh another revival we have here. I didn't even realize it was it had died. Uh and I know we have uh a fan in the Discord, a listener, uh uh
Why do I why am I uh Lonely Bob? Oh my gosh. Yes. Lonely Bob is a big Zombies Run uh fan. I see postings that he does on occasion. So Zombies Run is like one of the original fitness apps. That was present on the App Store back in twenty twelve.
And it was really cool, you know, where you could you could basically go for an i in world run or walk and it would play a an audio drama as you progressed and you were the runner and it was basically like telling a story about you running supplies and you had a base building mode and And uh it's really cool. But I guess about a year ago, the developers uh all but two says all but two
Staffers had been laid off and new episodes were put on the game on hiatus, but recently they've had a couple new episodes added and have stated that the that a new eight part story for the fitness app has begun. So You can't keep a good zombie down, I guess.
No, and uh it just goes to show you the versatility of the genre and the things that they want to do, um I mean, is this thing gonna break is this gonna, you know, bring the zombie fitness genre thing back from the dead? No. But I think uh if this does well, maybe we get more content, maybe we get something new. uh more new and uh I mean it's been going since twenty twelve. That's impressive.
Yeah.
Gone almost as long as we have.
Yeah, so I guess what happened was the company was purchased by another company that was into like crypto and NFT, and then they like let go a bunch of
You know this story well.
It's happened before. This isn't the first or the last. But I guess the original co-author purchased the the rights and uh ev or pr or bro got the game back or brought the app back in November.
So
It's kind of an interesting I look, I haven't used Zombies Run in a long time.
I know we've talked about it on the show back when we first started, so
Yeah. Oh, it was cool. I thought it was such a neat concept. So I'm glad it's back. I'm glad it's getting new content. And I know there are a lot of fans out there, so if you're thinking of getting back into Zombies Run, now is the perfect time to do it, because they have new content for you to enjoy. And it is not crypto or NF. As far as I know. Look forward to that.
Uh, one more story here before we get to our main topic, and it's actually related. I was really wondering if we were gonna find some sort of hint at whether part three of Twenty Eight Years Later would happen. And now that we've watched the film, and if you've if you've watched it alongside us folks at home, you know, and we're not gonna spoil it right here, but you know that
you need a part three. Just like at the end of part one, they had like a oh, next time on type moment. So Uh i the the news here is it's an Instagram post from the actor that plays Spike, Alfie Williams, and he shared a photo that he's training again with a bow and arrow and said the caption was Good to be back or something like that.
It's great to be back.
Great to be back, ooh, even better. So that's good news because Spike is the star of these films, uh, one of the big stars of the films. So the fact that he is Happy to be back with his bow and arrow. Um yeah, I'm excited because we definitely left Like it's a tr they announced it as a trilogy, so it should be no surprise that the story in part two is not complete, you know? Yeah, we'll uh we'll hopefully have that to look forward to in the coming years, maybe twenty twenty eight.
I'm guessing we get it in twenty twenty eight. Um that said We will definitely be talking about this one this article a little more when we get to the end of our discussion of our big topic.
Yeah, we're gonna try our best to go in order, but uh without further delay, let's get to our main topic, which is talking about Twenty eight years later, the Bone Temple.
¶ 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple
I'm Dr. Kelson. Well right now I feel more like Androcles removing thorns from the lion's paw.
Which means
यहाँ में Either way. Just kidding. I'm NHS. No charge.
Now, for our American listeners, this one might be a little confusing. So in other countries, when you go to the doctor, free. So just in case I wasn't sure if And I it's funny'cause NHS to me I mean because I don't live in the UK, but uh that's Well, it's the national health system, I I'm guessing service.
See, you know more. You know more than I do. Um, yes, this is uh 28 years later, as Spike is inducted into Jimmy Crystal's gang on the mainland, Dr. Kelson makes a discovery that could alter the world. And that could is doing a lot of heavy lifting because uh I don't know if it's really could. I think it's will. And we'll get to that as we discuss the film. But as you heard in that clip, uh Ralph finds uh Dr. Kelson plays Dr. Kelson. He is much more of a center character.
And if you listen closely, you might have heard another central character, which is Samson, the Alpha Zombie from the first film. Uh, and The trailers for this film I think did a lot of misdirection and did not point to Samson and Dr. Kelson's relationship.
uh throughout the film. This was not hinted at whatsoever. At least in the teaser we got. Maybe in the closer to m the movie launch we got more of it, but So I mean we'll talk about the Jimmy stuff,'cause that's like i that's important, but the Dr. Kelson stuff, which is kinda happening in tandem with Spike's adventure with the Jimmies
Uh how
What did you what did you
feel about about that side of the film. It was very different from other zombie movies. It was very Fido, you know?
Did you want me to tell you want me to talk about the Samson stuff or the Jimmy stuff?
Let's talk about Kelson, because I think the Jimmy stuff i in order feels very walking dead and I'd like to talk about Kelson.
I thought the Kel the the the Kelso or Kelson or whatever his name is. I thought his storyline was far more interesting than what we were getting with Spike. Not that Spike's story wasn't interesting, but Spike's story is something we've seen a version of before. Um And this Kelso story, the trope of finding a cure or the zombies becoming normal again or whatever, it's a trope. You see it in a lot of things.
And a lot of times it's ham fisted and it kind of falls flat or it's done in a goofy way to be funny or nothing tackles it from a very serious point of view. And we seen in the first movie that the that that the doctor shoots Samson with uh basically morphine and he kind of just sits there and lets him do whatever he wants with him. And then we realize in this movie that Samson keeps coming back to get shot.
He wants the morphine. So that tells you that there is something going on in his head, whether it's mental or biological, that he wants the drug, but we don't know why. Yeah. Yeah.
This is a more scientific side, I think.
Yeah, and so as You know, most most movies, they do it and they they throw it away they th it it it gets ham fisted and waved away and they have a cure in five minutes. You know what I mean? Yeah. And that this movie explains it as it's twenty eight years later, the rest of the world moved on and abandoned all hope for these people on this island. You know what I mean? England's gone. And this kind of gives you some hope.
And not in an unbelievable way, but in a theoretically possible way. Uh, as Kelso is drugging Samson, Uh he explains that What's going on in his head doesn't make sense scientifically because he smashes and grabs and kills everything. It doesn't matter whether it's a threat or not a threat. He just kills everything. And for that to happen, for him to pick up a baby and smash it.
That has to be it has to come from somewhere. And so he discusses it with the zombie as they're sitting there basically both on morphine. That he theoretically poses that there's something going on mentally. almost like a hallucination. Yeah. And that that's part of what's going on. Because he says that they tried other ways to treat the virus. And every time they would try to treat things like the symptoms went away.
But the person still raged out, basically, was kind of the way he explains it. And or he implies. It's very the the dialogue is very You've got to put you you have to kind of put your own thoughts into it. But the way I interpreted what he explained was that they had tried stuff, it didn't work, but it kind of worked, but not enough to stop it.
And that somebody he talked to had theorized that it had to have been something psychological as well. And so he gives Samson medication and then we get this crazy scene where you see him alone in the train and he's hallucinating. We get to see what Samson was like as a child. Um and he was about the same age as the character that we have as Jimmy. When everything happened. They were about the same age. F the scene is to be believed. Um
'Cause it's from Samson's perspective when he
It sort of walks off. Yeah. And it's implied. He was on that train when the outbreak happened and he's just been running like a madman since. And he's on the train and when he looks when he looks at the camera for the first time, because he never really looks at the camera and when he does you always see his bloodshot eyes, meaning he's infected. He looks at the camera. And you see he's not re his eyes aren't red. You see thought behind his eyes. He's not just a monster. Yeah. And Dun
handled in the wrong way, that would be cheesy or d or or dumb. But with the way they handled it and the way The way the story bounces between the two characters, you can tell that there's a lot of time between what's going on and what's going on with Samson. This isn't something that just happens overnight. And Kelso seems genuinely concerned that Samson hasn't returned after he gave him those drugs.
And I think when he comes back towards the end of the film, I think it hints at something we're going to get in the future of the movie.
Yeah. I think there's and there's layers to it. So like as the movie starts out, Dr. Kelson uses the morphine and the darts to basically drug Samson. It kind of puts Samson in this trance like state. And that he theorizes is there's this cloud around the mind that is calmed by the morphine, but there's still an underlying source of the issue.
And then later on in the film he is sort of being like, Oh, I've I've searched all through the island, I'm using all my morphine at this rate and at your body weight will be through it in two weeks and he's ready to basically, you know, kill Samson uh when Samson says a word. He says moon. And and that stops Kelson in his tracks and basically like
Oh wow.
Well there's there could be something
Here.
Well not only that, but the he has a conversation with him when he's on the morphine. If I could only get you to say a word. Sure. That would be amazing. Like that would be like groundbreaking. So when Samson finally does speak and he goes, Moon, like even me watching it, I went, whoa.
Yeah.
Aye. Yeah, like I kind of knew it was gonna come. I had a feeling, but even then when it went there, the way they went there just kind of made me go, Oh, this is cool. This is this is They're they're di they they're in uncharted territory here, doing something that we've seen done before, but always hamphested. This is doing it in a much more reasonably understood scientific way.
It's not cheesy. That's the issue with every other approach to this type of thing. It's too cheesy. And in this film. There's no cheese. It's just they back it up with maybe it's science talk that like isn't real, but the way they sort of portray it. Is after that moment, he's like, Okay, there's a human being still in there, and the virus is sort of like
clouding the person that's in there. And we see glimpses of it and we think it's just like, oh, it's the artistic styling of of showing what the zombies see when they attack. Cause you do see moments where Samson himself is attacking a human being and you you kind of see what Samson sees, which is this like monster that he's attacking, which is not the case. We know in real life it's a it's a human. Um, but then Dr. Kelson kind of realizes like, okay, let's try something else. Maybe this is
Yeah, I think he he theorizes it could be some form of psychosis, uh like a Yeah. Something that's treatable. Like he says, like there there are treatable medications for this and He wants to run tests and his hand is kind of forced to do something sooner rather than later and he he said, Okay, we're gonna try this and see if it works.
Um, and that's when after taking the medication, Samson kinda walks off and and Dr. Kelson has to deal with another threat, which probably a good point for us to switch over and talk about the Jimmy side of the conversation. for the film. Yeah. And and that is like It i it's an interesting part of the movie that uh the whole Jimmy stuff, isn't it?
Right. Um, right off the bat it starts with the Jimmy a Jimmy scene, um, where Spike is now in what looks like a gymnasium of some kind and Big Jimmy is sitting in a chair watching him and another Jimmy. Uh God, I hate that. I'm so glad that this that we won't have to say the words Jimmy again in when we talk about something.
You might have to say Jim.
We might the the diff different.
Yes, of course. Very different.
Very different. But i i the the other kid clearly is toying and playing with spike. And Spike gets a lucky shot and kills him and the kid dies. And Spike is been basically told, Well, now you're yeah, now you're the new finger of the hand.
Yeah. You're Jimmy. Welcome to the Jimmy Club. You're Jimmy.
Yeah, yeah. And I uh I immediately had flashback. Of a bad s bad seasons of The Walking Dead at first. And I was like, oh, please don't go down this road. Please don't go down this road. It g come on. You gotta do gotta do something interesting. Gotta do something better. And we get a story where These people get caught and uh The Jimmies are gonna kill them. There's a whole community, and they bring them out to a barn and they're torturing them. And the Walking Dead would have shown you it.
Them torturing them.
Like there's a lot of
They show a good chunk, but they don't the the I feel like the Walking Dead would have been more graphic about it.
Probably. Yeah.
And uh I feel like you get a little bit of it, but it's only bleat brief seconds, and you hear a lot of screams, and you hear the screams specifically when it cuts to Spike leaving and going out there to talk and the other girl out there talking to him. And it keeps cutting back to you can hear them screaming. And they do the same thing they did with Spike. They get there's one guy left. And they give him a choice. He can choose one of the Jimmies.
And
Um, he can choose one of the be one of the Jimmies or he can die like the rest of them. And so he clearly picks the Jimmy's to be a Jimmy so he doesn't have to die. And then he clearly picks the weakest looking young girl of the group. thinking that he could win her win her in a fight. And she basically manhandles him. And just when you think he's about to die about to die, his pregnant wife saves the day and then gets chased by the Jimmy. And
He he died though, right at at the end of that fight, like he kinda got caught in the fire.
They all died in that fire.
Except for the pregnant lady. She got away.
She gets away.
Yeah.
She gets away and we're and we're led to believe that they don't go after her. after she gets away. Uh Spike and the other girl imply that uh like in other words, he shot her with an arrow and she ran off into the woods, the chances are she's not gonna make it.
At least she died in the woods.
And
No reason.
She died in the woods.
Yeah.
And
That's the kind of callback I expect us to get a callback to in the next movie if we get one.
Well and it makes sense because like it's It's an island. Uh there's there's not a huge population, but but I could also see the other side of it where she just runs off and then she's never to be heard from again. Um
Could go either way.
It could. It could. I I felt like the Jimmy's stuff my w m a lot of my notes were like it's just it was really disgusting. Like they they they do go above and beyond to be like truly nasty to these people that they find and they're just as as we find out later like later on we learn more about them
Um, they're Satanists. They worship Satan. They're looking for old Nick, which is basically not Santa Claus, as much as I would thought was uh would be would be the joke, would be funny, but no, they're looking for Satan. And they they basically travel the land sacrificing people to Satan and and bringing people into the cult and Spike is this newest recruit, but there's also other
There's at least one other person in the group that I I can't remember well, her her name is Jimmy, uh although we find out later her name is Kelly. But she appears to be sympathetic to maybe not being
You get the vibe you get the vibe that she's been with him the longest. She's almost like his second in command. I don't know.
Like I kinda felt like she was maybe a recent recruit and that's why she wasn't fully in, although she was
No, I g I got the opposite. I got the vibe that she was the one one of the ones that had been with him the longest, and that was why she saw the flaws.
Oh, like she was starting to see the cracks in the in the preaching.
In the yeah. And and and and and that the it the the Jimmy explains to them basically as it gets explained to you. is that he doesn't believe in the virus and that this he doesn't understand why everybody came back the way they did. He thinks that Satan was released on the world.
Right.
It's basically what do you think?
There was a line in the film I didn't capture it, I only did the intro. Uh, where he's talking about like, you believe these zombies are like from bugs and science and shit? When he's talking to Dr. Kelson and Dr. Kelson says, Like, yeah, what what do you believe? That this is all from Satan?
And he says like yep, basically like They they have a really interesting head to head conversation that in The Walking Dead would have been running and gunning and fighting, but in this movie they find a way to bring these two characters, these two polar opposite characters, and have them have a conversation That lasts, gosh, I mean like fifteen, twenty minutes on screen.
You're enthralled the whole time.
Oh, it's amazing. It's uh and the reason they think he's they think he's Satan. They think Dr. Kelson's Satan'cause he's running around with Samson and he's covered in this iodine. So It makes sense on p uh uh the script works in how they're sort of uh you would believe that that he would
In The Walking Dead, we get introduced to characters that do bad things or do
Yeah.
a theoretical story that makes sense is Negan. Other than that, it's just kind of bad guys of the week and people that lost their minds and It the their their motivations for the bad things they do are very shallow. Or it's it's clearly greed or it's clearly they're just bad, or it's clearly they've lost their mind, or it's It's like it's all very generic.
And when Jimmy sits down with the doctor, because he thinks the doctor is Satan, and then the doctor and him have this conversation where it's revealed that he's not Satan, and Jimmy's like, can we sit and chat? And at this point, Jimmy's never done that in the movie that we can see, um, where he wasn't torturing somebody. You know what I mean? And he sits and he has a conversation with the doctor. And the doctor infers and puts pieces of Jimmy's story together.
And
If you look at it from an onset, it makes sense why Jimmy's f Fu pardon my language, it's f is fucked up. His father was a vicar, his father left him in a church to try to protect him and tried to lead the zombies out and became a zombie himself. So he thinks that his father was leading the zombies in his warp twisted way of viewing it. And so now they walk around killing zombies and killing people because he thinks that basically like he's the antichrist.
And he doesn't know any better. He was only eight when all of this happened. And he was left to his own devices and he's built this cult. You know what I mean? It's not super strong, but he kept finding the str the the survival of the fittest. Uh the his group are full of people that are ruthless killers essentially. And and you can see that all of them get sick when they kill and cut people. It's not normal human behavior, you know what I mean?
And Jimmy's the only one that seems kind of like not phased by it.
And he's not doing any of it.
Right. And after having a conversation with the doctor, you've just viewed Vil Jimmy as a as a weird walking dead villain for the last
Hour
And then he has a conversation with the doctor and he says to the doctor Well We've reached an impasse here. I have a problem, and so do you, because I'm gonna have to go back up that hill and tell my people that I've met old Nick. And if I go up there and tell them that you're not old Nick, I gotta cut him down here and kill you. And I don't wanna do that. I like you. And at this point you've Jimmy's never said those sort of things. You know what I mean?
And the fact that he doesn't want to kill the doctor says something about his character that maybe Maybe there's more there than just villain of the week.
You know what I mean?
He's not a he's not a binary character. There's depth to him.
Right.
And they do it in such a clever way that I was just engrossed the whole time. Whereas if I was watching The Walking Dead and this sort of thing happened, it would have been lame dialogue. It would have been uh Poorly written. Um, it wouldn't have been as long as it was in this movie. It would have been 90 seconds of dialogue. Whereas in this, they let it chew the scene for 15, 20 minutes. And the doctor says to him, and I love the line, it was like
Well, they do say old Nick likes to make a deal, so let's make a deal. Or something like that. Yep. And And you don't know what the deal is, but it's implied he's gonna bring them down and he's gonna pretend to be the devil. And I thought that was interesting. And then it goes in some directions after that that I was not anticipating. I did not expect a a a a music video of Iron Maiden with Ralph Fines dancing as the devil, but that might be the coolest thing I've seen in a movie in years.
It was so cool I wanted to rewind and watch it again as soon as it happened.
Well the the really interesting part is w they're using the timeline to their benefit because Dr. Kelson has this record collection, and these other characters that were born during the apocalypse or were very young when it started might not have known what Iron Maiden was, and surely uh you know Captain Jimmy wouldn't know Iron Maiden having grown up uh as the son of a uh a very religious man. I i you could make that connection. It was it it was um implied but was never told.
But the fact that they use Iron Maiden and if you look at the posters for 28 years later, we've had these conversations, it looked like it was spoiling the fact that Dr. Kelson is infected with the rage virus. But it's a misdirect because it's him dressed as the devil doing this Iron Maiden thing, and I loved that. It was such a great It was such a cool thing, and I was like, oh, he's not gonna die. What a what a cool misdirect. But uh alas, not many people out make it out of this movie unscale.
No. And so that's where everything unfolds. Uh the doctor is clearly going to Help Jimmy re get these people on their way and go about his business and be in his bone temple. And um from that point on, everything goes crazy. Uh he blows
What was it like cocaine or something? It was it it was definitely a hallucinogen.
He b that's what I thought was it was some kind of hallucinogenic drug. Probably something he's been using on Samson was my thought. Right. And you can see that they're all clearly out of their minds as it's going on and what's going on. And then it's revealed that one of them is Spike and that's when things go go Sideways.
Yeah. Doctor Kelson recognizes him.
The doctor was clearly going to just send them on their way and just be glad he didn't die, right? Yeah. And then when he realizes Spike is with them, he realizes that he owes Spike because he told the mother he would look out at look out for him. And that you've already been through so much is what the line he says to Spike.
And that's when the doctor says the thing that I thought was just very i it was so poetic that when it came out of his mouth, I was like, oh, I wasn't even thinking of this. And he goes, like in other words, God sacrificed his son. I'm going to have to sacrifice you. You're going to have to be crucified.
And he gets the followers to do it. Or tries to get followers.
He wants the followers to do it. And I was like, oh, this is such a wonderful twist on what what Jimmy's been doing that they're now going to follow the doctor. Is what I was thinking. And then uh Jimmy stabs the doctor, reveals he's not Satan, he's just a man, and then Jimmy tries to claim that he's he's Satan, and that's when Uh Kelly or I think her name is Jimmy Inc. uh She reveals that like in other words, you've like in other words, it's time for you to go.
And the other two don't know what to do and then by the time they make up their mind on which one of them is going to um that they're going to attack her, she's already made her move and killed both of'em. And It's in The Walking Dead, this would have been a twenty minute fight of epic proportions. And in this movie, the fight was over before it even started. It was maybe ninety seconds, if we're lucky.
Yeah. No, it's a quick it's it's a quick sort of resolution And uh Jimmy stabs um Dr. Kelson and it's a f uh like anything's fatal uh at this stage in and even though he's a doctor, he knows he's been stabbed, he's got internal internal injuries. Um but he does it all for Spike. Spike says, Why didn't you let us go? Like we were about to leave, you could have lived and he as you said, he said, Uh, well, I recognized you and
you've lived a hard life and you deserve better than whatever this nonsense is. Um and but he still he still gets he's he still gets uh Captain Jimmy uh crucified and he he is reverted into this sort of whining
All the people that pleaded for him to not kill them and he becomes even worse than they were. Where he's like, I just want my mommy.
Yeah, and he says he can't hear he can't hear the voices anymore.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And all I kept thinking was that had something to do with the drug that got put in his face. It was some kind of uh it had to have been the the voices in his head was probably some form of schizophrenia, was my thought.
Yeah. Yeah, there's definitely something going on. There and and uh then you have Samson return, who appears to be cured. He needs pants, but he's cured. He uh he lost his pants along the way. We didn't talk about it, but there's a moment in the train where he's attacked by the zombies because he says the line uh Oh I don't have a ticket'cause he's flashing back to the train scene. And the zombies attack him, he
And they're trying to infect him again.
Exactly. They try to infect him and he it's obviously it shows it's a really smart scene because it's like, okay, he's cured, but is he immune? He's already infected, so he can't be infected again. He's being bitten, he's kind of being torn apart, and but he's fighting back. And we do see he survives at the end of the film. He comes back, he finds Dr. Kelson. And he thanks him. He says, Thank you, Doctor Kelson, for
basically saving me. And he he kind of walks off. Well, he walks off with Dr. Kelson's body to what I assume to bury him.
Kelson says something about put me with the with with the mausoleum or whatever the the the the the skulls or whatever and he gets carried off. Sure. And then we don't see what happens if again. And we see it all from Jimmy's eyes as Jimmy hangs there crying. And then just Long enough, you think it's all over and it's gonna fade to black. Then you see Samson come running at Jimmy, and then it fades to black.
I don't know if that
Субтитры сделал DimaTorzok
Like I think that was just a random.
Okay.
Was it?
No, that was Samson. Yeah.
I took it as a random infected uh
Did you?
Yeah. But then maybe it's there to play with us because like the idea is like, well, is is Samson talking real? Like, cause he at the end there, like maybe it was all an illusion and that that ending sort of scare of him attacking Jimmy, maybe that's there as a misdirect. I I We won't know even if they pick up on that in the third part. I really hope they do. I hope that they
sort of run with this idea that that the infection can be cured or at least addressed. But you do get the sense that so the interesting part is like Samson as a as a zombie uh turned at some point. Let's assume that everything we saw was real, turned at some point after the age of eight. He he could he remembers the language, he remembers words. I don't think what happened between Dr. Kelson and Samson was him teaching Samson. I th I think it was that him lifting the psychosis.
You know, and And him sort of r remembering these things to to speak and and to to talk and
Yes.
Like I didn't get the sense it was like a Fido situation where he's taught him how to do all this stuff. I think it was just unlocked, you know,'cause'cause he was Human before, said Mr. But this is all theory, as you said. It's it's us sort of reading it and this is what makes this movie so So good is because like they don't tell you everything, but they certainly tell you a lot more than the previous titles have it in the terms of the virus.
We're so used to something like The Walking Dead where they spell it out for you to the point where they go, yeah, we assume you're so stupid you can't put the pieces together yourself. So here, let us explain to you the entire plot of the movie in 30 seconds. And that we're so used to that that the fact that this was smart enough to not throw it in our face like that. Mean something. Yeah. You know what I mean? This is not wasting your time. This is not talking to you like you're stupid.
Which is often my problem with The Walking Dead is I feel like it talks to me like I'm a dummy. Like I've never seen a horror movie before. Or I've never seen a zombie thing before. Like This d wasn't talking down to me. This was this was It was it was interesting, which is a word we don't get to use very often in this genre. It's interesting. Yep. And it made me hopeful for what they could do with a third movie going forward.
Especially after Spike and Kelly walk away and they leave all this behind and And then we get what is the crazy part that made me get up and dance.
Yeah. I was really worried that the the the other gym in the room would be a Marvel style Cameo thing, but they they do a really good job of sort of bringing us back to where Jim is, the iconic. reproduction of that shot, like the helicopter shot, or I guess in this case probably a drone shot, of them showing the stone wall, the small cabin, the grassy field. And then they go into the house and they show these rooms that we just watched twenty eight days later, you know, um
Either
It was definitely either last year or earlier this year I
It was this it was this year, it was just before we watched the Bone Temple. So it was the it was earlier the it was it was in the past year.
Yeah, it was very recent and I don't know if it's just the famili familiarity of it or if they actually recreated it like And and then aged it twenty-eight years, but I really felt like that was the house where we left Jim last. It it felt exactly like I remember it.
It felt very similar. If it was not the same house, it was in the same area, location, or like you get the vibe of like you know exactly where they were. And I wasn't even sure what it was because so the scene cuts to a girl sitting at a table doing like homework. And she's talking to somebody in another room. And you can hear the voice, but you can't see the face. And I was like, who is she talking to?
And I hadn't put two and two together yet of who she was talking to. And then Cillian Murphy walks into the room and she says something about him being dad. And I was like Oh, they're tying it into 28 days later. Oh, this is where the other one. Oh, this is awesome. And then They have this conversation where I think he was supposed to be a history student in the first movie, and 28 days later, he was like a college student.
Kid.
Like studying something when I think like he was gold for his masters or something, I think, if I remember right, in the first movie. when before the b outbreak happened. And He's having a conversation with her and it's clearly he's talking to this like ten or twelve year old girl, almost like he's a college professor, explaining the something to her. And she's like, Dad
Like, you wrote the test. How aren't you gonna tell me what's in it? And he's like, no. And you could see he's trying to put some kind of normalcy into whatever wackiness is good, craziness is is going on. And All of a sudden you hear faint noises. And I was like, uh oh, if they kill him and her her in the first, I'm gonna be ticked. And then it's revealed that.
that they've dealt with this sort of before. He grabs she grabs a a scope and he grabs a gun and they run off out into the the fields. And that's when you see Spike and Kelly running from infected. And she looks at him and she says, Are we gonna help them? And it was like, Well well, we're gonna try. And it made me hopeful as to what's going on in this in in the next movie.
I was like, we're gonna get Jim's story now. They g we've been been introduced to Spike. We've told two port parts of Spike's story. Now we're gonna tie Spike and Jim together and we're gonna finish the story.
And it's a great end cap to this whole this whole thing. And I I I we knew Jim was gonna appear at the end. That was always the talk is like, well, he's in it, he's at the end, and it's gonna tie in and and lead into the third part. Um you could you could argue that if they never make a part three
w then this would serve as a really, really cool bookend in that like, oh man, they brought'em back and we get to assume they live happily ever after, uh, and and Jim saves the day again. But It it really does point that we're getting a part three and it's it's gonna be uh an adventure to see what happens uh with these characters.
So here's the thing. We're good we're possibly gonna get a part three, but they've left so many things open-ended thus far on the table for you to think about. that the third movie has to deal with several things. Spike and Jim are gonna be together at some point in the movie, clearly, and there's gonna be some kind of adventure tying them together.
Is Samson cured or is Samson not cured? Does the cure wear off or is he cured permanently? What's g w and if it is cured permanently, how are they going to address it?
Well, if he's secured permanently, I feel like it'll pop up. If it's not permanent, it'll probably fade into obscurity.
Then we have the baby from the first movie that was brought back to the the the town. What happened to the baby? Is the baby still alive? Did the town take care of the baby? The baby wasn't infected, but what's going on with the baby?
Right. What about the baby? Baby John Doe. Right.
Yeah.
For the pit fan.
And then we also have soldiers ended up on that island at one point in the first movie and died. Right.
Yeah.
We don't know anything about that either. So I'm wondering if the next movie is going to be somehow tied into um are they going to reach the outside world and try to tell them that there's a cure?
Or
Uh i I I don't know where it's gonna go. I don't think it ends with them all just living on the mainland. I mean I I mean ending live them all just going about their lives. There is a story here to tell. I just don't know what they're going to tell us.
Yeah, I'm not sure either. Uh well, we know it'll be in the same vein as the last two films. It was originally envisioned as a three parter and the idea was always to bring Jim back in some capacity and I r I really hope I I have faith that they'll that they won't just pull a walking dead and bring them back for them to kill off the character. I I think they'll do it do it justice. But there is some unknowns with Jim as well because we the daughter
it's she's too young to be to be anybody who showed up in the first film. We assume his wife is
His wife is the girl that he's that that the w he was with in the first movie, is what I would assume.
We only saw Jim and his daughter, who I believe was unnamed. I can't remember. If he said her name. Maybe, maybe he did, but it was only the two. So we don't know the fate of the other characters. They don't talk about
Uh
Her mom, I I can't remember if the mom comes up in the conversation Uh but it's look, it's it's a really cool bookend. I'm glad it all signs point to a part three happening. I know Killian Murphy is on board, like he's excited to return to this franchise. Um And yeah, like it's a uh like we talked about this at the top of the show. Maybe the Bone Temple came out
too quickly, like just seven months after the first one, had a rough go at not a rough go at the theater. It it did not quite make back its budget. But as you said, Lou, it's doing well on streaming and and that's a big part of the business now. So But that being said, the next film, twenty-eight years later, part three, whatever they call it.
It hasn't even started filming yet. It's likely a twenty twenty eight film. I think that's enough of a gap where you will have people come back, coupled with the fact that you have a character, a beloved character from the first film. returning as well. So all of that I think really builds up this event. And I will say I
I'm a little bummed that I didn't see this one in theaters and go see it right away and waited another three or four months. I'm glad we we're talking about it here, but I will definitely go see part three in theaters because uh by then I'll be ready. And not willing to wait until it's available to rent at home. So
I'm excited. I'm excited for what's coming next. Uh I can't believe I remember when they announced this trilogy and we were all like, oh my god, they're doing a trilogy? Like what are they doing? Just make the sequel. Don't Don't mess this up by like getting greedy. And so far, they've done a really good job. Two out of three. Uh, and I think the third one just I honestly I don't see
at this stage how they could fumble it. I I really do believe you got Alex Garland writing again. You have Danny Boyle coming back to direct because he has confirmed if a part three happens, he will direct it. So you've got You've got the crew back together. I I but yeah, there's no mention of uh the island community. Uh I thought for a second we were seeing Spike's dad run around, but it was a completely different person. So there's no mention of that island, um, in this movie.
Yeah, Lou, like
It's a it's a really good film. I'm if you have if you've listened to this whole thing and and you haven't watched it, you do yo owe yourself a favor to go watch it. I I think it's best enjoyed going in blind, but It's still worth checking out, I think, if you've listened to this and kind of spoiled some of the key moments, but definitely check it out.
It's a solid 9 out of 10.
I still preferred the first one, like twenty-eight years later, the first in the trilogy.
You do? Okay, I prefer this one.
I think well, you know, it's I I think eat both movies are are similar yet different. Yeah. But they have that s they have that those they have the characters that sort of like weave through it with Spike and Dr. Kelson. The first film is more of a traditional sort of zombie journey. The second one is more about the human mind, both from the perspective of like Jimmy and and his warped followers, but also treating
the the psychosis of the zombies and Dr. Kelson sort of theorizing how he might be able to cure. I really thought when I heard rumblings that they were gonna like They like the movie deals with curing the virus, as you said, Lou. Like, man, that is you're heading into a cheese factory with that one. Like, you gotta be careful. But I think they kinda They kind of figured it out with with how they portrayed it. Um
Yeah. Again, if done wrong, it comes across really cheesy, but they didn't do it wrong assofar as I can tell this.
Yeah, so that's twenty-eight years later, the Bone Temple. I know we've waited a long time for 28 years later, and we've have two films under our belt, and hopefully we'll have a third in the coming years. But until then, we've got plenty of content to talk about on Zamp, including the fact, as suggested by an emailer last episode, we're going to chat about this is not a test.
Which is scheduled to arrive on Shudder on May 22nd. So I want to thank Shelly for the suggestion. And we are going to load up Shudder and watch this is not a test. for our next episode. Another new zombie movie. And as a tease, uh, I actually have a list here. We've talked about our Japanese zombie movie that we have to lock in. We're still trying to figure out like whether we can watch the
bloody muscle bodybuilder in hell, whether we can actually if it's available, uh, w whether we have to rent it or stream it. Um uh other twenty twenty-six experiences, cold storage, we bury the dead. Primal season three, there's still tons of stuff in our queue that we're like we we gotta get to. So uh this is a a fun problem to have, I gotta say.
Yeah, the we haven't had this problem in a while.
No.
It's been like, oh, we gotta dip back into the walking dead. Ugh.
Yeah, I didn't even mention The Walking Dead, but Daryl Dixon will be back, uh Negan and
Which I have to say I am cu I I am excited for I'm not excited for Dead City Part Three. Is that what we're at?
Yep.
I'm not excited for that. But Daryl Dixon, I'm curious I'm excited for because I want to see where they take it. I I wanna know if Daryl and her are gonna get home. I wanna know what happened to the kid from the first two seasons. Like they gotta they gotta tie it all together. And I think that I think that AMC's gonna have to start wrapping this stuff up.
Well, you do get the sense with Daryl Dixon that there's an opportunity To revisit Alexandria and our heroes there because Maggie and Negan are not going back to Alexandria. However, Darryl Dixon and Carol I think have a a real possibility of getting a Some cameos and follow ups.
with that final season. But if if not, we'll I mean that's fine too. But at least we get to see more Spain. That's that's always a bonus of that show. So yeah, we'll have that as well, probably this summer and or fall. So stay tuned for that as well. But that is gonna do it for this episode of Zamp.
