Intro / Opening

I'm a zombie. I've been bitten. You're listening to the survival podcast for zombie nerds everywhere. is zombies ate my podcast hello and welcome to zombies ate my podcast i'm your host ryan murphy and joining me as always is the busy zombie lord theater goer lou page how's it going lou it's going uh for the record we definitely will be talking about uh 28 years later um i just came from the theater a couple hours ago having just seen it

I will save my thoughts for when we talk about it on the show. I can say that I went in a skeptic. And I left very much enjoying the film. But if you all have listened to the show and you know me, and I talk about how... I don't want to replay The Last of Us while I had a fantastic time with this movie. I don't think it's something I personally could watch more than three or four times total in my lifetime. It hits you in the feels. Yeah.

Yeah, we've already planned to – I'll go see it in theaters. We'll talk about it in full detail, spoilers included, next episode. So that gives you a couple weeks to go see it.

And yeah, I think it sounds like you enjoyed it. I know there was another sort of discussion we were having and I wanted to... get ahead of it like there was the news that oh they shot this uh on an iphone which the news story was like they shot it on an iphone but like really they shot it on like a rig consisting of multiple iPhones but did you feel as though that was weird um that was done for specific shots um I will I I don't think this is a spoiler but you know you see

The infected get killed. Those rigs were designed for when the infected get killed. It's almost like a rotating camera every time one of them gets shot. Like you're along for the ride. With the arrow kind of thing. Okay. Interesting. And those are neat. The film definitely feels. In the vein of the first one where the first one was shot on like grainy film, this definitely doesn't feel like it was shot with a like one of those big IMAX cameras. This does not feel like that.

This definitely feels, there's something about the way this is filmed that feels a little different. So if they say iPhone cameras, I believe them. Okay. It would make sense based on what I saw. Yeah. We'll chat about it in detail once both of us have had a chance to see it. I'm excited based on what Lou has told me. The reviews are coming in and they're very positive. So it sounds like...

We're getting that 28 years later trilogy if this thing hits at the box office. So look forward to that in the coming years. The next one's January, isn't it? Yes. It's like six months away. Yeah, not far. So we're at least going to get a trailer for that probably soon. I would think they'd wait until the home release of 28 years later. I don't know if they'll wait until the home release, but I think it'll be out of theaters when we get the trailer. Yeah. Well, I guess we'll see. But until then.

News

Let us head in to the news. The virus has completely devastated over 150 of the world's major regions and is spreading rapidly. Let's close the book on what we discussed last episode, which was The Last of Us. Season two with the confirmation. And we knew this based on the ending of season two, but, uh, we have confirmation that the last of a season three will be led by Caitlin Devers, Abby. Uh,

Shocker, I know, Lou. What are your thoughts on this? They're just confirming everything you and I suspected about this one. So it is what it is. We got about, what, a year? Maybe two before we get the next one. Yeah, I know they said they don't want us to wait as long as we did between season one and season two. There was a writer strike and an actor strike between.

between both seasons but i mean maybe 18 months a year and a half i don't see them being able to get this out in a year because it's a it's a huge Huge undertaking. It's a big budget film, a big budget series. So I don't know if they talk about it in the article as to like their I think they are aiming for like late 2025, early 2026.

No, wait, that's not right. I think it's going to be, I think they're aiming for the end of 2026. They're trying to make it only be a year. Yeah. Well, I hope they can do it. I really do feel like season three will. lift up season two to a certain degree and and kind of make you enjoy it maybe not enjoy it more but at least appreciate for what it is and how it how it sets up the impact of season three

But I feel like season four, if you didn't like season two, season four is going to probably upset a lot of people. But yeah, I mean, confirmation, it's out there. Abby will be the lead for season three. I'm sure the roles will be reversed. Ellie will be, you know, her presence will be felt, but not as front and center as Abby will be. Right. Lou, how about some zombie adjacent information here? A new sci-fi series that's out now, but you can check out the first five minutes.

uh, on IGN and I, and I watched this, this is revival. Um, it debuted on sci-fi on June 12th and is based on the Harvey award nominated comic from Tim Seeley and Mike Norton. that I guess ran from 2012 to 2017. And this is about, um, the dead rising all at once in this, I don't know if it's in the world or this town or it's the town. Okay. It's the town. Are you familiar with this series? I think we talked about this.

like a couple of years ago that this was in production. I think this is another news headline, but it's something that had completely fallen off my radar. And then I saw the, I saw the, I saw this five minute thing show up and I was like, huh. Zombies. I think I vaguely know what this is. And then when I watched it, I was like, oh yeah, this is going to be fun. Yeah.

So there's two episodes out right now, and I wonder if this might be something interesting that we could check out for the show. It is zombie adjacent. They say these aren't zombies. It is literally the dead returning to life. And in this five minutes, you see this article that has the first five minutes is talking about the practical effects they use to basically showcase someone.

reviving while mid cremation, which leads to some practical effects of someone running around on fire. I mean, I can understand that... this show could have like obviously the mystery box of uh the dead rising unexpectedly um a lot of drama based on people coming back like it sounds like they come back as if

Nothing like they were never dead. They just come back and yeah. And the, the first five minutes scene is actually set in a crematorium in a morgue style setting. So you get that full effect. of people coming back uh you get the classic rising while in the body bag you get the the banging on the more doors like but they're yeah they're not zombies they're people they're reacting as if hey i'm trapped in your help you know

Yeah, this this is definitely something that should be on our radar. And I definitely think whether I cover it, whether we talk about it on this show, it's definitely something I'm going to try and watch in general because it just generally looks interesting. Yeah. And I mean, if you look at this cast.

You've got Steven Ogg in there, Walking Dead alum. So that's good. Yep. That might be connection enough. There's someone from Letterkenny, Nathan Dales. I don't know if that rings a bell for you. I know you watch Letterkenny. There's a couple people from Letterkenny. Yeah. Interesting. We'll put it on the list. Maybe after, um, poor dead city. Okay. We'll put it on the list.

Yeah, we'll put it on the list. I saw something today that I'd never heard of on on Amazon, too. There's something called Apocalypse Z. It's apparently I think it's. south american movie that amazon has the rights to and it's a prime exclusive uh i think it came out in the last couple of months so that might be worth us watching too okay wow

Summer of Zombies. We also have Comic-Con coming up too. There's a lot of zombie stuff lately. I think zombies are making a comeback and I'm okay with that. Yeah. Speaking of comebacks, we've got Dying Light the Beast. which is arriving August 22nd. And this is a standalone, smaller slice game in the Dying Light franchise that brings back the original protagonist, Kyle Crane, in his own adventure where he...

Is he the beast or is he taking on the beast? The new trailer doesn't really tell you. No, it doesn't really. It's more dying light in my mind. Yep. If you like dying light, you're in for more dying light. I do like the idea of bringing back the original, the original protagonists from the first one. I never did play Dying Light 2, and I'm kind of looking at this and I'm like, you know what?

Maybe I should play. I liked Dying Light and Dying Light 2 just I never got around to it. So I wonder if Dying Light the Beast might be something I check out. So at the end of the year, we have been asking for more video games. I know it's tougher to play video games these days because Lou, you're short on hardware. Yes, these days, but.

I'm more into the indie stuff anyway. And I didn't really enjoy the first game, so it's hard for me to pull the trigger on the second one. Yeah. So this will be out August 22nd. PC. uh, PlayStation five and Xbox, uh, series consoles. And this is a, uh, this is a standalone title. Now, if you did purchase the, the expensive version of dying light too, I believe you get this for free.

Although right now you do have to buy it separately. And I believe it's discounted. It's got to be maybe a $50, maybe $40 title. Yeah, I don't think it's full price. No, I was just going to see because you can pre-purchase it. It's on Steam and no. OK, it's an $80 Canadian game. So maybe maybe it is full price. I don't know what it is for you in the States. I can't. I can't see it. Hold on. Could be 70. No, that's 60. That would be 60. Yeah, it's probably 60 here.

Look, it's cool that they were able to expand it. It's cool that Kyle Crane's coming back. Yeah, it's 60. It's 60. Yeah, it's hard to keep track these days of what the norm is. So I wouldn't say, I'd say it's old.

normal pricing but i guess now with everything going even higher it's uh it might be a little discounted so um Keeping with the video game vibe, and if you missed it, Summer Games Fest, the Ghost of E3 took place at the start of June, and we got a huge announcement for Resident Evil fans, and there's more to come. with Resident Evil Requiem, which is out February 2026. This is Resident Evil 9, Lou. Are you excited to return to the office? Yes. Yes.

I should say I read another article somewhere else because we got this trailer. Trailer looks really good. It gives us hints of where we're going in the game. It hints that we might be going back to Raccoon City in a post-apocalyptically nuked Raccoon City. I'm excited. This looks like it's going to be exactly what we wanted. But I saw another review where people got hands-on with a demo.

There was no gameplay footage because they weren't allowed. But the person was talking about their experience with the demo. And I have a funny feeling we might be getting a demo as an audience soon for this. The demo does not have any combat in it at all. It apparently was our main character. hanging just like she is at the end of this trailer she's tied up and hanging and she gets down and then you're sneaking around a facility being chased by stuff and

Apparently, this allows you to play either first person or third person. You can play it either way. Yes, that was part of the initial announcement that you can swap between the two. They did experiment with that and Resident Evil Village with... I think the expansion DLC was third person, and then they added to that DLC the ability to play the whole game.

in third person although it did it wasn't designed with that in mind so i i think it was it did feel like kind of like a bonus sort of little mode uh but yeah i'm i'm excited and You know, so you have your new main character, which I'm just trying to find. I think it's it's I think it's it's like a Raycroft, isn't it? Is that the name? Yeah. Should be front and center, but.

I think that this is Rose. Well, and that's the thing. And I never played the village epilogue. I didn't see it. I know it did feature Rose and it jumped the series forward. 20 years at least because she was all grown up. I'm trying to find out. So this is the thing. I agree with you. This does look like. Rose because you've got the classic white hair. It's Ashcroft, Grace Ashcroft. But, you know, I wouldn't put it past Capcom to, you know, try to try to.

throw us off the scent but there's also news that leon will be present as well yeah also ironically enough I believe the Ashcrofts are villains in one of the other games. Maybe Code Veronica? Yeah, it sounds super familiar. As soon as I heard it, I'm pretty sure the Ashcrofts are... involved at least in resident evil one they might be part of the mansion i think so i don't know but it's really cool so there's lots of tie-ins this look i'm excited for this coming is supposedly in february yeah

Yeah, February 2026. And if you're looking for more information, Capcom will be having a spotlight presentation on June 26 at 6 p.m. Eastern. And it will feature news about Resident Evil Requiem. Maybe we get that. I mean, they seem to alternate. They seem to do remake, then new entry, then remake. So we might have to wait a little bit longer for remake news.

But I'm excited to see more. And I feel like if this game is going to feature Leon with the return of Raccoon City and we see the ruins of the Raccoon Police Department. I think Leon gets confirmed in this spotlight. I can see that happening. Yeah, I think that's coming. New Resident Evil, I'm excited. Yeah, now here's the question, Lou. The question that I have for you is...

Do you buy a new console for this thing? Is it time? Is it time to upgrade the living room? Or what do you think? I will not buy a new console. I am not a console guy anymore. I am a PC guy. This means I may start looking to build a new PC. Oh. I mean, you are due up. The Steam Deck, as lovely as it is, I mean, it's got to be getting long in the tooth, right? I have a funny feeling this is going to be Steam Deck compatible.

Capcom has gone out of their way to make sure that all the games they've put out in the last few years have been Steam Deck compatible. Even the Dead Rising remake was Steam Deck compatible. I played all the way through it on a Steam Deck with no issues. Nice. So I'm guessing that this is going to probably likely be Steam Deck compatible, but we'll see. We'll see. Okay.

Well, look forward to that in the near future and we will report on that Capcom spotlight on our next episode. So with that done and the news all wrapped up.

Night of the Zoopocalypse

Let's get to our main topic, which we didn't say at the top of the show, is Night of the Zoopocalypse. Welcome to the Zoopocalypse! That's right. We're talking about this Canadian animated film that is brand new, where a wolf and mountain lion team up when a meteor unleashes a virus, turning zoo animals into zombies. They joined forces with other survivors to rescue the zoo and stop the deranged mutant leader from spreading the virus. And Lou, this is a kid's film.

I know you tried to get your daughter to watch it with you, although she's obsessed with Pokemon, you said, right now? Yes. I very much tried to get Violet to watch this with me, and she was like, no, Daddy, I have Pokemon. Yeah, we need to watch Pokemon. And I was like, but don't you want to watch zombie zoo? No, daddy, Pokemon. OK, so I had to watch it alone myself.

Yeah, I will say I watched this as a family. I watched this with the whole family. And what did the kids think? The kids. So Caden loved it. Caden's, you know, punches above his age in terms of movies. He's big into disaster films. He loves the Twisters and Twisters, both films. He'll tell you exactly what happens and how folks meet their demise in those movies. He loves disaster movies.

Uh, the, our youngest, the five-year-old had nightmares. Middle child was like, you know, yeah, she was like, yeah, it's all right. But, um, Caden really liked it. They had a lot of fun. And it is a kid's movie, but it's a really good sort of early introduction to the genre. Yes. I can say knowing my child and having watched this all the way through by myself, I'm kind of glad she didn't watch it with me. I don't think it would have hit the way I thought it would with her.

She has a hard time when movies are all dark. She thinks anything that's dark on screen, even if it's meant for her, it's going to be scary, Daddy. I had a while I think she would have been entertained by this. There were moments in this movie where I was like, yeah, I think she might have been too little for this. Yeah. Yeah, it is. I think like, you know, eight, nine is a good range.

Um, as you said, it's, it's, it is the color palette is like of a darker tone, a lot of dark purples. I have to say that that was the one thing I will say that bothered me with the movie is the color palette. I felt like everything was like purple or green or like darker shades of pink. And I felt like we never really escaped that. And I felt like it did the.

movie a little bit of a disservice yeah yeah it does have that it has that feel like it's it's going for that 60s sci-fi vibe with like the lime greens and the fluorescent purples If you see the movie cover of this movie, the palette never changes beyond what you see on the cover of the theatrical poster, basically. Yeah.

Especially once the apocalypse does start, you do get that color switch. This is, you know, funny enough, this is based or inspired by a concept by one of the film's executive producers, which is Clive Barker. loosely based on his unpublished short story, Zumbies, not to be confused with, wasn't there a movie called Zumbies? And we refused to watch it.

We watched the aquarium one and then there was the sequel that was in a zoo. Did we really? We watched an aquarium. The zoo one was a sequel to that. No, was it? Yes. I, oh. There's two of them in the aquarium and then there's one in a zoo. Thank you, Asylum. You're right. Okay. Aquarium of the Dead 2021 is a spinoff film and Zumbies is one of the films featured. Okay. Huh? I, I, I don't know.

it like yeah from the producers of sharknado because like you know they need a paycheck um so this is way better than that night of the apocalypse i thought it was a good it was a good movie and i mean if you're into trying to get your kids to enjoy different genres and you're looking for something outside of like the spongebob or the or the you know classic kid adventures this has like a similar like sort of

plot trend to other kids movies you know reluctant heroes join forces they fall you know they fall to the wayside there's a there's they come back together um It is a bit predictable in that regard, but it's still a fun adventure, I think. It's definitely a fun adventure. It's super predictable. If you're an adult and you're watching this, you're going to literally just be like, yep. And then...

I know what's going to happen in the next scene. Yeah, and I know what's going to happen in the next scene. And literally, it's paint by numbers, but not in a bad way. I definitely think that this is, like I said, like we've said, this is directed at children. This is a very good introduction to horror for your kids. I found it was funny. Some of the jokes fell a little flat for me.

Um, but I don't think I was the audience for this. So I think for kids it would have been, uh, much more fun. Uh, I think I would have been, I enjoyed my time with this. I think I would have enjoyed it more with Violet. Yeah, I think I enjoyed it a lot more because I had watched it with the kids. I was, as we were watching it, like concerned, like, OK, who's waking up with nightmares? Because, of course, I picked the film, so it's going to be me.

consoling the kids in the middle of the night if they have nightmares um but but what's critical about that with with a movie like this because it is a kids movie and and there is danger that these animals are in, so to speak. But if you watch it through, it has, it has a satisfying positive ending where, you know, it's. You know, the sun rises and everyone's happy. It has a happy ending. Yeah. Which was the thing I was worried about.

I was worried that at some point it was going to go dark and never come back. It never goes dark and it never goes super dark. The zombies in it are interesting. uh they they're very cartoony zombies um even the way they behave is cartoony like literally limbs get ripped off of things and then they stick the limbs back on and that was when i was like all right all right

If they're doing that, then that means at the end of this movie, all of these animals are going to be fine. Yeah. Yeah. And that's very much the case at the end of the movie. And that's, again, critical for a kid's movie, because like for them to watch the complete products like see now you don't need to have nightmares because everyone's fine. As long as we all figure out the.

the thing uh the thing that cures everybody which i thought was like a nice misdirect where it's like they thought it's they thought it was the soapy water that that cures them but it turns out it's it's the music I will say, I loved everybody in the cast. There's nobody that, except for David Harbour, I will say that nobody really, and Scott Thompson, nobody...

His voice really stood out to me. And I will say that I enjoyed David Harbour as the lion, but I felt like everybody else kind of overshadows him. His character doesn't have as many lines as everybody else. He's very subdued. If you're a fan of Kim's Convenience or a little show called The Mandalorian, you've got Paul Sun Hyung Lee, who you'll probably recognize as...

I don't know, what is this character in Star Wars? In the movie? No, no, no. In the movie, he's the... One of the monkeys. Yeah. I can't remember if he's an orangutan or... Yeah, I think he's an orangutan. I don't think he is. It's a monkey type I've seen, but I don't know what the name of it is. Yeah. Oh, a gibbon, maybe? Yeah. And...

I mean, I liked all of the animal characters pretty much, except maybe one that I found really annoying. I found the pygmy hippopotamus kind of annoying. That was the only character I didn't kind of like. yeah no that's that's the kid character that's like my kids love that character oh it's poo the pygmy hippo yeah like that that was that character is not there for you as an adult that character is to hold the children's attention

it literally shows up just to say stupid stuff. And you're like, okay. All right. Yeah. Oh, and, and before I, before I forget it, it's a captain Carson Teva. That's who Paul. uh, Sun Young Lee plays in Star Wars. He's a rebel pilot. He's a rebel pilot. He's awesome. If you've not seen Kim's Convenience, it ends way too soon, but it is a fantastic series. It's on Netflix. Also very Canadian. Uh, you should check it out. This movie was very Canadian. Yes. And that's not a bad thing.

no no no no this podcast is half canadian so if anyone's complaining don't complain because you know uh but no it's like i also really thought the music for the film was tied directly to its sort of inspiration with like classic zombie and sci-fi films. Like the music was very reminiscent of the, you know, night of the style films. Yes.

I thought that was fitting. My favorite character was the guy that was obsessed with late night horror movies. That's Lou, the character right there. That's you, man. Yes. As soon as that character started talking, I'm like, oh, this is the character I'm going to identify with the whole movie. And sure enough, that's exactly what happened.

Yeah. Uh, actually, you know, now you mentioned them. I mean, two of the four clips that I got are him. So I've got, uh, I've got, they, this is the, I always pull this, but this is the first, uh, you know, iteration of the word zombie in the movie. It has become some kind of gummy zombie. Gummy zombie. So that's exactly what they are too.

Yeah. A hundred percent. And then this is totally like throughout the film, that character is like making references to, to movies. Basically he's a, I think he's a, he's a lemur and. He fakes injuries, so he has to be kept in the vet's office overnight, and he watches movies all the time. So he's the guy in the movie who knows all the things and the tropes and stuff, and he's constantly making references that...

Oh, this is the third act. This is where everyone either heroically wins or dies tragically. And this is another one of those moments where... I didn't put the whole clip in. It is a hilarious moment where someone steps on a squeaky toy, but I'll give you this. A convenient plot device. You're right. He was my favorite character. As much as I do love... I love David Harbour, but as you said, he's very subdued. He's kind of like the outsider of the pack.

uh pa paul's son young lee he like i love his voice and and i love him as an actor in other projects in this he plays more of like he kind of plays the villain a little bit or like the you know the tropey zombie There's always the guy who's like in it for himself. Yep. He's the guy that's selfish and is going to try it. Like every character is a trope. Yes. And he is. As soon as his character gets to feel like, oh, I know what trope this is. Yeah.

Yeah, he's constantly, like, shutting doors on people and trying to, you know, advocate for leaving people behind. And I think there's even a moment where he betrays the group and tries to leave. Yeah, it's... And I think that plays to its strengths where I think it does. It doesn't quite come up to that line of like Pixar films where it's like, oh, there's something here for everyone. I think that's where the movie tries to do that. And like playing into the tropes for.

for the fans of horror, the adults in the room that are like, oh, man, I get the connection here. And there's all those archetypes with the lemur and the gibbon and, as you said, every character. But, like... It doesn't quite go to that Pixar level of like, oh man, it works on both levels for kids and adults. I will also say this. When the movie got over, there was in no way, shape, or form that I thought that this is going to get a sequel. No.

No. I mean, it's pretty resolved by the end. It's very resolved by the end of the movie. I don't think we're going to get a sequel. And that's fine. I think it did fairly well. I was surprised. It has like a 90% on like Rotten Tomatoes or something. Yeah. Yeah. It's like, I mean.

It's very tough for animated films to break into the theaters and have a huge box office hit. It was in theaters for like a month and then kind of went straight to digital from there. And that's where we watched it. We rented it. I don't think it's streaming anywhere yet. I think you do have to like rent it. Uh, yeah, I ended up, I ended up buying it because the rental price was like six or seven bucks and the buying price was like 10.

I mean, well, it's another zombie movie to add to the collection. So I'll just spend the extra three bucks. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I think that as a kid's movie. it's worth rewatching because I feel like it does have like those plot devices to watch it over and over again. It has, it has some, some funny moments. I think the main character.

the the group mashup works really well and they kind of like split the group and reunite them a couple times throughout the movie so there's it's got that going for it um but yeah like i i really i really liked it I enjoyed the main character. I enjoyed the mountain lion. I enjoyed every single character all the way through. As the movie got closer and closer and closer to the end, I was very curious how they were going to resolve it.

That was the thing is that the stakes of the movie kept escalating over and over and over and over again to the point where I was like, I don't know how they're going to end this. And then they found a really good way to resolve it. Yeah. Yeah. And as I said, there's a misdirect. They think it's it's water, soapy water, which is it's not. Yeah. And it which I like. You're right. Like there's this big.

third act where they're like setting up this big trap to like get everybody into this this watery soapy trap to like save them all and it ends up backfiring and causing the big finale monster for them to fight and a lot of our a lot of our friends that we see throughout the film get, then get infected and join this like giant mass. And, and luckily they're, they're able to solve it by, by realizing through the power of music specifically.

the zoo theme that, uh, that can save them. Uh, but speaking of which, like, wouldn't the zoo theme kind of play every morning? So like they were going to be fine no matter what. Although maybe there was a power outage. Yeah, I feel like at some point this movie would have resolved itself. It has the Indiana Jones effect. Yeah, true, because Indiana Jones just picked the wrong cup and you're set. No, if in Indiana Jones and the first one, Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Even if Indy doesn't show up in the whole movie, the situation that unfolds in the movie would have unfolded the same way without Indy in it. Oh, right, because they open the box that melts their faces. Yeah, that makes sense. The only thing that changes if you take Indiana Jones out of that movie is that he tells her to close her eyes at the end of the movie. Otherwise, the entire movie would unfold exactly the same way.

okay interesting uh i mean like i thought all the voice acting was we've already touched on some of the actors but i thought all the voice acting was really good like it kind of fit within the film nothing stood out as like Nothing stood out in a way that was like, oh, that was... I mean, we're at a point in movies where if you have a certain quality bar and you hit it, and I think all the voice acting was fine. The voice acting was good?

I won't say anything was amazing, but it was good. I've seen TV shows with less production value, with higher names and less production value. It was really well done. The animation, like I said, I didn't like the color palette, but that's a personal thing. And I also didn't like a couple of the character designs, but it was just...

It was a couple of the character designs where it took me a few times for them to be on camera before I understood what it was they were supposed to be because they drew things in almost a too cartoony fashion. But that's a personal thing. Not a big deal. Nothing I was going to lose sleep over. Yeah, I think you see some of that weirdness in specifically like David Harbour's character in the face, kind of like depending on the angle, it can.

The style of it doesn't look like you would think it would look for a mountain lion. You know he's a big cat? Yeah. Until they state the words mountain lion, I wasn't sure what kind of cat he was. Yeah. But it is very stylized, you know. And I thought the wolves didn't look like wolves. They I wasn't sure what they were at first until somebody says they're a wolf. And I was like, oh, OK, I can kind of see it now. But OK.

But again, those are just personal preferences. Kids are not going to notice. No, no. These are two adults reviewing a kid's movie. you know take that with a take that with a great assault but i like i think yeah i i really i really appreciated the humor uh i thought as what would you say it was uh the ostrich was it scott ash's character He was really good. Scott Thompson. Scott Thompson. Yeah, he's good. And he had this line, just so you can get a taste of his voice acting.

I don't want to be that guy, but I did say soap and water was a crazy way to cure mutants. So, you know. He's the know-it-all, right? He knows what's best. He's always that character. So like, as soon as I heard the voice and I knew he was in it, I was like, OK, I know exactly what he's going to be the rest of the movie. Yeah, exactly. And this clip here gives you a taste of our main.

Our two main characters, the wolf and the mountain lion, which you'll hear David Harbour in this, but you'll hear how subdued he is here. Uh, oops. You killed it. Good job. It seems like he's putting in a bit of a, like his Russian accent there that he plays for Red Guardian a little bit. He probably was filming his lines for this while he was still filming that movie. So I wouldn't be surprised if some of that slipped in. Yeah, it could. It could. I mean, I think it's weird when you have...

And like David Harper is he's he is like he's he's the biggest name probably on the billing sheet here. But he's not like a huge star, right? Like I would say he's a B tier. I mean, yeah, I guess it's. Yeah. Yeah. He's definitely like he stars in enough. He's not lead character material, but he's definitely like the guy that's with the main character or the villain in the movie kind of thing. Yeah.

And I guess what I'm getting at is like, he's like when they have these movies like this, like animated films where they have a bunch of voice actors and it's not Pixar, it's not Disney, it's not DreamWorks. but it's like another studio outside of that sort of top three, they usually have like one voice actor that they try to prop up as like, this is our big star. And David Harbour is definitely the one.

on the list that they that they're that they're doing with that but he his his voice his voice his character in this movie is like it's serviceable it's fine it doesn't stand out in comparison to everybody else in the movie like i think i think his character while fine his voice is is is over as you said overshadowed by all the other characters we talked about specifically i think the lemur i think that's

That's, that's the comedic effect where it's like, it works on, on both levels. Like it's funny, he's animated and it's not just like, you know, going for the cheap shot with like the pygmy hippo, which is literally poo.

uh yeah which was like that that's what i heard for weeks after we watched this movie because i watched it i watched it last month is the kids going like i'm poo and i'm like okay yes yeah the pygmy hippo you know and uh you know she that that character makes it through mostly the whole film and it's she is funny don't get me wrong i laughed so I laughed a couple times, but about the fifth time they do the same joke, I was like, all right, okay. Yeah, wrap it up.

Yeah. I was like, I won't lie. Like I said, I enjoyed my time with this movie. But when we were in the end of the third act of this movie and it was getting close to the end, I was looking at my watch and being like, all right, how much longer does this movie have? Because I see where it's going. Can we get there now? Yeah. Well, I'm glad everybody lived and everybody was intact at the end, because as you said, like the horror of not only, you know.

characters losing their limbs and being put back together and weird and, you know, unnormal ways. And then at the end, them all merging into one giant monster. It's like, okay, definitely fix this. So the kids don't like lose their. shit yeah that was the thing where i was worried is because i was watching this and then they become a giant goo monster thing yeah yeah and i was like

I'm going to have to suspend some disbelief if they make all these animals. Okay. Yes. You know, there's definitely that there's definitely like at the end, you're like, okay, how are you going to explain this one? And they don't, it's just, you know. magically everyone's put back together like the gorilla that that clip you heard where you know david harper says good job is literally a sequence where those two characters like

take that gorilla apart into like five different pieces. He puts himself back together in, in like, you know how, uh, when we were kids, you know, in the nineties, you had those, those action figures that you could.

like all all the limbs were like socketable and i think there were ninja turtles specifically like that you could take all the limbs off then put them back in different spots and that's what it was it reminded me of like an action figure put back together you know incorrectly uh and that gorilla's fine the end of the movie they're having a chat everyone's good everyone's everyone survived so but that it's a kids movie so they they kind of need to they put everybody in danger

There are stakes, but at the end of the film, like there are no stakes. It, the, the, the virus is pretty much, I can't remember like. I think they're very clear. Like it's gone. It's done. We solved it. You know, the little, the little asteroids gone. Yeah. And the little rabbit that started it all is back to normal. Yeah. Yeah.

But it's a very cute movie. If you have kids that are interested in horror, I know my kids, when they go to bed, they're like... you're gonna stay it's not fair you're gonna stay up and watch watch shows and and they always think i'm watching something inappropriate like the walking dead or something like you're gonna watch the walking dead i'm like what you want to watch you know the walking dead no it's too scary

So when we watched this, I said, oh, we're watching this and daddy's going to talk about it on his zombie podcast. And they were like, oh, man, that's so cool. And we watched the Scooby-Doo movies, which we covered earlier this year slash late last year. It is nice to have that break because, you know, The Last of Us Season 2, 28 days later, that's some hard-hitting stuff. So it's good. It's good to mix it up. And I mean...

It's not like we're staying here for very long because on our next episode, as we said at the top of the show, we are going to the theaters. We are going to watch 28 years later. Lou has already done so. He gave me some interesting tips on what to expect. No spoilers, but it sounds like it's a pretty devastating film, so tuck in, I guess.

We'll see. There is a moment, I will tell audiences going into this movie, there is a moment in the third act that I was bawling like a baby, and anybody who has listened to this show and knows me... Probably will understand why. Yeah. So we'll, uh, We'll see. I will be prepared for that and we will talk about it. Obviously, we won't have clips for the movie. Maybe we'll pull something from the trailer just to kind of intro the segment, but no clips for our 28 years later.

I think this is officially our first time going to the movies, seeing a film, talking about it. It's going to be it's going to be a good treat. So zombie movies are back on the big screen. We'll have that next episode. I also want to thank our patrons patreon.com slash zombies ate my podcast.
