¶ Discovering Your Strongest Body
You are listening to your strongest body . Hi , I'm Betsy Foster , a certified strength and conditioning specialist and certified nutrition coach . I've worked as a personal trainer for over a decade , helping people build strength , speed , muscles , as well as a deep appreciation for their bodies and confidence that helps them live their life to the fullest .
Now I'm sharing what I know with you fitness , nutrition and all the deeper stuff to help you discover your strongest body . Hi , welcome to your strongest body . Thank you for being here . Episode one I'm really excited about this . I'm really happy that you're here . I'm happy that you found the podcast . That's an awesome thing to me . I love podcasting .
This is I don't know if you are brand new to experiencing foster strength or this you know everybody's brand new to this podcast , I guess . But I was doing a podcast before .
It was all about helping trainers , helping new coaches had great guests , had great insights on potential issues you would run into with clients and running your business , and then even training aspects , and it was awesome because it was such a cool platform to be able to have longer conversations about things that don't get wrapped up or summed up well in an
Instagram post or in a brief email or even like a short blog post . Some of that sort of stream of consciousness thinking allowed me to come up with a few sort of different insights or different talking points , guiding points for people , and I really liked that .
What I kept hearing from people was that they wanted more training insights , some things about nutrition , things like that , because the audience was also a lot of people that weren't trainers , and I absolutely love that .
And I wanted to make this podcast , and when I think about sort of what drives me as a person particularly professionally but kind of in life in general , is that I really want every single person to discover their strongest body . I want everyone to discover their strongest body so that they can live their most fulfilled life , and I think everyone deserves it .
And so that's what prompted the podcast as a whole and then prompted this episode , because I wanted to tell you a little bit about sort of why I think that what is coming for you in this podcast and introduce you to sort of the language and the concepts that I talk about to really help you with your training , with your nutrition , with your own personal body
image and self image and with your health in general . So you'll notice that I'm not saying like your best body or your fittest body or your hottest body or whatever . I don't think you have come . If you know me at all , it's not technically how I speak , but I want you to feel hot too , for sure .
I just the strength piece is something that is so essential to you being able to overcome challenges , to be able to appreciate who you are and what you're capable of , and I think of strength in a lot of different ways , so that's what I'm going to talk about .
So , like I said just a moment ago , this is sort of the ethos for my business , the ethos for this podcast and generally in my life .
If I saw this post recently , the other day , that was like it was a Gator post , it was the Florida Gator football team and they were like first day of school thing and on the little first day of school board , you know , like the tiny chalkboards kind of thing it said .
I don't know if it said like when I die , I want , or the legacy I want to leave is whatever that is . A lot of the people said I want to be remembered . I think that's what it was . Now I'm ruining the story , anyway , I was . It got me thinking about like , okay , let's say you couldn't have your business tomorrow , but and you were done .
What is the one thing you wish that you leave people with ? And I want people to not only believe that they deserve their strongest body , I want them to want it and live in it right now . And your strongest body is going to be evolving all the time and this isn't an end point or a destination point . It is a lifestyle .
I don't say that in like a masking diet language . I mean in the way you approach things in your life and the way you live . I want you to feel like you're always striving for and appreciating your strongest body and , like I said , so it's not an end point , it's every day .
Every day , you're appreciating the things that are the that that you have worked so hard for . Oh , maybe you're working towards something new at that time , but you're able to relish also what you have now .
So when I think about somebody's strongest body and and I think there are ways in which you know everybody can look at health and fitness in whatever way works for them I think a big piece of that is certainly physically . So , physically , I want your strongest body .
This is what I when I'm thinking about that sort of definition in my mind and I'd love to hear more from you about what other components you think about but when I think about it , I'm thinking about that your strongest body is going to allow you to physically get to do the things you want to do .
It's going to let you , you know , you know the old line of like I want to be able to play with my kids . I want to be able to get up and down off the floor easily . I want to be able to join the adult rec league pickleball . I want to be able to do all of these kinds of things that will really bring joy to my life .
Maybe that's even just like getting up the stairs and not being winded . It's about , you know , being able to take a walk with your family at the end of the day and and feel like you have the energy to do it . It's feeling like when you get out of bed , you don't have all these aches and pains , and that's another one .
Your strongest body is going to allow you to live life without feeling broken all the time .
Your strongest body is going to help you regularly be amazed by yourself One of the best things about success in the gym , in consistency in the gym , in accomplishing new things in the gym , is to be physically amazed by what your body is capable of , and that could be lifting the absolute heaviest weight or doing the most pull-ups , but it also could be being
able to do something that you couldn't do six months ago . Your body is incredible and we spend a ton of time and that's a generalization but many people spend a ton of time beating themselves up over their body or talking down to their body or having conversations where their body is the enemy . Your strongest body is gonna be a friend to you .
It's gonna be something that you know every day you're not gonna get along with , but more often than not , you are going to feel proud of what you do and the effort you make , and so that's what strength really allows you to do that strongest body and strong , yes , lifting tons of weight , but being fitter , being faster , being more muscular or being whatever .
You insert the language you like in terms of your specific goal , but what I'm talking about is a bigger picture of like . What are we looking for out of our whole life ? So our strongest body , whatever that is to you , is one that you're gonna be amazed by on a regular basis . This one might I don't know . I don't know if it's like a hot button one .
I say that but I'm not quite sure . Your strongest body is gonna be one in which you have more days , more of your time , spent really loving the way you look .
¶ Strong Body, Positive Body Image
Now I would say in general , I'm an advocate for body neutrality in that , like our bodies in general , the way they physically appear Don't tell us anything about our worth as a human being , right , and I want you to learn that , and we're going to have lots of conversations about that on the podcast , and maybe you know it deep down and you just have sometimes
difficulty kind of connecting the intellectual to the what you're experiencing day to day . But you know that you are so much more than your physical appearance , than your physical body . You're more than what you can lift at the gym . You are an incredible human being , regardless of your body , and we live in our bodies .
We live in our bodies every single day . I want you to be more than neutral about your body . I got to be honest . Okay , I understand neutrality as a concept and I believe that is sort of an overarching thing , but when I , when you get down to it , I want you to love it . I want you to look in the mirror and feel proud .
I want you to put on clothes that feel good on you , that you like , and I want you to go out into the world and like the way you look . I want you to like getting your picture taken , not every single time , but a lot of times , a lot of times , and there are ways that we can begin to feel that way about ourselves .
So your strongest body once you start , you know , adopting fitness habits , movement habits , nutrition habits that feel as though they are really nurturing you , you start to shift the way you see yourself . So , as we are kind of talking about this , we're going to be talking about things to help you really love the way you look , go beyond what's neutral .
We're going to talk about nutrition because your strongest body is one where you can eat foods that support your training , eat foods that support your overall , overall health , eat foods that taste good . Your strongest body doesn't have to skip things because it's quote unquote bad . Your strongest body can have birthday cake at the birthday party .
Your strongest body is making decisions that work for you , because sometimes nutrition is about relationships , and sometimes nutrition is about cultural appreciation , and sometimes nutrition is about family , and sometimes it's about macro nutrients .
It's all in there , and your strongest body is a version where you aren't spending all your time stressing about foods that you enjoy or aren't stressing all your time counting whatever the nutrient may be .
Maybe it's sometimes , maybe it's no times at all , but what I want to encourage you to do , and what this podcast is going to do , is provide you help so that it is a more relaxed state for you , as well as one that adds to your life rather than takes away . And your strongest body is strong emotionally as well .
It's strong from a mental health standpoint . It's strong in all of the aspects in which our minds take things out of context and or we take all of the sort of cultural ideas and beliefs that are floating around in the world and we put them on ourselves and we start to believe that we are less than because we don't fit a certain size or mold .
Our emotional well-being around fitness , nutrition and our bodies is equally as important as all the things that we do in the weight room and or in the kitchen . That's a huge part of building our strongest body and we're going to talk about it . Okay , things you're not often going to hear me talk about numbers .
I don't need to give you numbers about how much somebody weighs or how much somebody lifts . Maybe sometimes they come up in conversation , but they're not all that important to me . Will weight loss come up in this podcast ? I think it probably will , but what I'm not going to do is focus on that alone .
Sometimes , or a weight loss or fat loss or any of these kinds of things , your strongest body is , whatever shape , size , being it is , and if any of these side effects and or big wins of personal training come along with it , great .
But all of this comes back to the fact that what we're building is a strong body , regardless of any kind of standard , regardless of any kind of outside perception . This is about you .
This is about the best for you , and we're gonna talk about all the nuance to those kinds of topics , because I'm not one to say all of one thing is bad or all of another thing is bad . There is room for you to get stronger . There's room for you to build muscles . There's room for you to change your physique .
There's room for you to change the way you eat . There's room for you to change the way you feel about how you look or how your clothes fit or any of those things . There's tons of room and there's tons of nuance . The most important thing , and the thing we'll keep coming back to , is that you're already enough right now .
You will continue to be , and all of these things that I'm gonna be talking about are about lifting you up and building on top of what you have there , knowing that this is a never-ending kind of journey . I'm on it . Other people in the fitness industry are on it .
Every human being is living with their changing body every single day , and so I'm going to be here with you to give you all the ins and outs the science stuff , because I got that . The client and coaching support stuff , because I got that too habit coaching , all of that .
I've done that for a very long time so that this element of your life the fitness , nutrition , body image part is supported . I'm gonna be that support for you and we're gonna talk about lots of things .
We're gonna talk about those sort of , like you know , big thinky topics , but I'm also going to give you highly actionable stuff , like if you want to feel better and you want to increase your protein . Here are the steps . So we got a lot of all that stuff going on .
