Give - Have something to give to help out. For me I was giving out pieces of gum each day of college to random students. This helped me meet a lot of new people. It also gives you a purpose for something to do.
Listen - It's been said that if you are really listening to someone you will always know what to say.
Journey - Life was meant to be a bit unpredictable. I've had some great experiences just walking with people a bit and trying to get a feel for how they're doing.
Luke 24 is a great scripture story that talks about this similar idea.
