Where are we at in society today? Come after me. I'm a man, I'm forty. Go ahead, make my day every single week. I put my freaking heart and soul into this. I don't go out there and laugh. It's not funny. Nothing's funny to me. I don't wanna go out there and get embarrassed on Monday night football for everybody, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship. So I ain't nothing changed from yesterday. Still the same person I was yesterday, and I got the same thing
for you that I had yesterday. You know why I'm here. You play to win the game. You don't play to just play it. That's a great thing about sports. You play to win, and I don't care if you don't have any wits. You go play to win. When you start telling me it doesn't matter to retire, get out for the matters. Here we go on a Tuesday. Welcome everybody to Exus and bros. La Meyer hotline is always open for you eight six six eight three eight forty eight forty
three. Love to talk to you about whatever it is that's on your mind. In the world of sports. You can text our program too Sports Radio to twenty one thousand. You can follow us on Facebook at exus and Bros and follow us on Twitter as well or x XB Mornings. Good Morning, I'm Matt Shepherd. Trent Bally is our producer. Today and tonight is the All Star Game. A Tiger found some Injustice. I believe yesterday one Terrek School will not be starting the All Star Game. Guess is he's going to
be the second pitcher in Corbyn Burns of the Orioles. We'll start the All Star Game. Not that he isn't worthy of consideration, he is. He started nineteen games, same as Terrek Scooble. He's pitched more innings, He's won one fewer game and lost one more game than Terrek'schooble. So he's nine and four. ERA is right there with him. It's two point four to three. He has thirty less strikeouts, four more walks, but also pitches
for the best team in the American League, at least right now. So I think there are three reasons, three reasons why Corbyn Burns was selected over Trek's Scooble. Tell me what you think here, there's my mindset. Number one, he pitches for the best team in the American League Number two is a career type move. Corbyn Burns makes his fourth consecutive All Star Game. This will be the first time he ever starts and just the second time he'll
ever play. Twenty twenty two to twenty twenty three, from what I can tell, he did not play. He did play in twenty twenty one and lost the game while he was a member of the Brewers. And lastly, this might be a bit of a reach, and that is Attalie Rushman is the starting catcher, so it's his teammate that might be the reason Bruce Bochi is starting him. He becomes the fifth Orioles pitcher to start the Midsummer Classic, in the first since Steve Stone back in nineteen eighty. Here's how the
American League lines up. Stephen Kwan leads off left field, Gunner Henderson behind him, Juan Soto batting third, Aaron Judge batting cleanup, Jordan Alvarez batting fifth, Jose Ramirez betting sixth, Vladimir Guerrero Junior batting seventh, Adlie Rushman batting eighth, and Marcus Simeon batting ninth. That is a very sturdy lineup.
The National League behind Paul Skenes, features Katel Marte in the leadoff spot, then shohe Otani trade Turner, Bryce Harper, William Contreres, Christian Nielich alec Baum who had a nice night hitting home runs last night, Taoscar Hernandez who won the home run hitting contest, and then Jerrikson profar I'll take the American League starting lineup. Hernandez, by the way, he won the home run derby out slugging Bobby Witt Junior. And Hernandez becomes the first Dodger to
win the award of the fourth oldest to ever win in his debut. Now, we did not make the Schooble debate our poll question, and there's a reason for that. We know what the answer would be, I mean, and rightfully so, I mean, you're Detroit Tigers fans. It really didn't make much sense. We did make it about the ESPN Plus document and the quarterback rankings that we'll get to and where they rank, Where Jared goffranks, where Matthew Stafford the ex line ranks. And that's part of our poll question
that we'll get to in a little bit. The pole question we gave you yesterday was do you enjoy the whole run derby yes, no? Or don't pay attention? And I suppose the last two could kind of coincide. But the reason I put no and don't pay attention is no would be no, I don't enjoy it. Don't pay attention would be well, I don't I don't watch it at all. No, sometimes you're watching it for somebody else.
So there you go. We did not get to the final results of the poll question from a couple of days ago, and that was which NHL pitcher should start the All Star Game. This was from Friday. I put Paul Skans, Chris Sale or other Trent who won that? I will check on that right now as we're talking and check on that for me, will you, and let me know what the final results are. Paul ran away with it. Yeah, that's what I was going to say. Paul Skeens
was gonna win it by a landslide. Here's here's what we want, and I kind of alluded to this yesterday. We want power, right, and we love the power pitchers, and I get it. It's interesting how a lot of times baseball hockey in general get dissed because there's not enough quote unquote scoring. Like I don't know about you, Trent. I love a I can really appreciate a two to one hockey game or a one nothing hockey game. It's interesting because I can do that, but I sure can't appreciate it
in a soccer match. And I suppose because in a soccer match you might get might get three to four shots on net. You can see ten shots, but how many are on net? Right? That's not happening in hockey. Yeah, And I think the reason that hockey you can you can put up with a low scoring affair a little bit is because that means there's probably a lot of hitting. It's nasty, that's not they're scoring. There are scoring chances. Sure, there's a difference between scoring chances and you know,
just shots. Soccer you're just you know, you get ten shots, but only three or four reached the net. That's boring stuff. Hockey, you may get a two to one game, but you may have twenty eight shots on net. The goaltender just made twenty seven saves. There's activity there, there are people involved. That's what I like about it. In baseball, a lot of people feel the same thing because there may not be enough action for you, because a pitcher is dominating it. You're they're just blowing people
away. But we love it when Paul Skins throws six innings and strikes out eleven or twelve. We love that Trek Schouble strikes out a career best thirteen people. And that's cool. I do two. What's interesting, I think is that we want the power pitchers. If you're going to give me a low scoring game, might be the mindset of baseball fans. If you're gonna give me a low scoring gain, give me a ton of strikeouts, give me a guy who's just overpowered, give me a guy who is absolutely filthy.
That's what should have happened. If that's what you want, that's what you should have happened. Bruce Bochie let us down. We'll see Trek Schouble soon enough. Again my prediction, he's the second pitcher in. I just don't think he made the right choice in the starting pitcher. We'll get your thoughts throughout the morning on Axes and bros. How far off am I on the Trek Scooble against Corbyn Burns' situation in starting the All Star Game tonight? Now, I think there will be some who believe, well, you know, the veterans deserve more consideration because there's more opportunities for the young guys down the road. Okay, if you believe that,
then why not Paul Skins? Why not Chris Sale starting instead of Paul Skeins? Where's that argument? So I just don't. I haven't seen any interviews with Bruce Bochie about this topic, but it is hard to deny the merit of one Terrek Schooble. It really is. I mean, this is a guy who has been I think it's hard for us to figure out what must watch TV is. It used to be with Justin Verlander, right, absolutely. I would say the same thing with Max Scherzer. There are certain
pictures. I mean, look, of course you're gonna have players, You're gonna stop whatever you're doing to watch Aaron Judge hit Personally, I want to watch Bryce Harper hit it. That's nothing against you, know, Alec Baum or Nick Castianos or Trey Turner or j t Rilomuto when healthy, I want to see Bryce Harper hit. Are there more than one guy? Is there more than one guy in anybody's one specific lineup? Yeah, I'm sure the Yankees. You know, when it's Juan Soto and Aaron Judge, then yeah,
you're you're gonna probably watch them in that lineup back to back. I don't think people are doing that when, with all due respect to the to the All Star Josh Naylor stands in Jose Ramirez. You bet Bobby Wood Junior for me, yes, not just the at bat, but what else he does? You know, I don't know if there's anybody like that with the Tigers. So I ask myself, are you dropping whatever you're doing to watch
Tyrek scooble pitch? I think most Tigers fans are. I mean, if you're watching the game, even at Comerica Park, most people are going to go to the concession stands of the restrooms while the Tigers are hitting instead of when Derek school is pitching. And I think Dad tells you something. Again, all due respect to Corbyn Burns, who has having an All Star first half of the season are pre We're past the midway point, so it's pre all Star. Absolutely, he deserves to be there. It's a question of
whether or not he should be starting. And for me, I don't think Baltimore Orioles fans are saying, hold on a second, I'm not going to get a beer in this half inning because Corbyn Burns is pitching. They're going to go out there when Corbyn Burns is pitching because they want to make sure they watch Gunner Henderson hit or Adlie Rushman hit. That is not the case with Tigers fans. Now, what you may argue is, hold on a
second. It's not Corbin Burns' fault that the Tigers don't have anybody worth sitting down for and watching. Offensively, you're right, but it does lead to the fact that this team, with this guy on the mound is must watch, I believe. Tell me if you think you disagree and why I don't think we should be overly upset. I'm just bringing up what I think is a little bit of a miss, you know, an injustice here. I understand it if you had somebody like Hadro Martinez back in the day and throwing
bullets and making sure you know he's en route to another cy Young. But in this case, I mean, you could make the argument that Grayson Rodriguez at eleven and four is having as good a year as Corbyn Burns. The numbers don't necessarily outside of wins and quality starts, necessarily support that. When you look at Terrek schoobl there is you can ask just about ask anybody who's associated with baseball and ask them, who do you think is in line to
win the cy Young? Is Paul Sken's mentioned in that even though he's six and zero, Absolutely he is probably doesn't win it over Aaron Nola or Chris Sail right now, perhaps even Zach Wheeler at least right now, but he's in the conversation. Trek Scubele is the front runner in the American League. So that tells you what I mean, Come on now, what I was about to say is I don't think Tigers fans should be offended in the sense
that, oh, Detroit's getting screwed again. I don't believe that's the case. I just don't like when a player is punished for his team's lack of success. That's exactly what I think it is. Shep the only logical argument that I can see is that the Orioles are the best team in the American League. And I hate that logic. I strongly dislike that logic. I should say, because it's a starting pitcher, they have their own record.
It'd be one thing if it was a first base man and it's kind of a toss up and you throw out the first baseman, who's you know, playing for the best team in the American League. That would make sense to me. But as you've kind of laid out here this morning, Schooble has one more win, one fewer loss, a better eer, a lot more strikeouts, and a better whip, right and war. Every stat he's better
in some closer than others. And and I guess, I guess the strikeouts perhaps don't matter as much to me as the wins, the whip, and the war. But he leads all American League pictures in wins above replacement. Right, Okay, he leads all American pitchers in strikeouts. All I'm saying, because you know, there's plenty of pitchers who are very skilled and deserving of an All Star nod, but may not be strikeout pitchers. My point is there is a phenom on the other side, and what makes Paul Schemes
so attracted or attract a bull for baseball fans. It's not the mustache. I'm sure his hell is in the Pittsburgh Pirates uniforms. What is it. It's his power, It's his ability to blow people away in the box. You can't wait. Everybody's gonna want to watch him throw the first pitch.
Okay, Tarrek Schoubele is that guy for the American League. So if you're gonna use that excuse, you're gonna use that logic on why you can't watch one guy and why he should be on the bump, then Tarrek's Schooble gives you the exact same reason to do the same thing for the American League. Youth electricity, watchability, excitement right now youth. Look, school's twenty seven, right, so is it youth. It's not like he's twenty two like
Paul Schemes. But he's a great story. Career year two, Yeah, it's a career year which again just because if you want to look Seth Lugo is having a career year two, that doesn't mean I think he should start. I'm talking about the whole ball of wax. Take it all in this in the right context. Unfortunately we won't see him start, but we will see him my guess be the second pitcher in for the American League, which tells you Bruce Bochie was trying to figure out which one to start. It's
a good debate, it's a good conversation. Meyer Hotlines open for you. Eight sixty six eight three eight forty eight forty three. Text the program to twenty one thousand. Did you watch the Home Run Derby last night, I did. Okay, did you see the national anthem performance? Yes, that was drawing quite the star up on social media. I didn't see it, but I just heard it was simply brutal, like among the worst they've ever heard. I was trying to think of the worst I had ever heard and Roseanne Barr's rendition, and a friend of mine reminded me Carl Lewis's rendition in case you ever wondered last night's In that conversation, without a doubt, what do you think
the overall perception we know? Let me dive into basketball a little bit here. The overall perception of certain greats is intact Michael Jordan. The biggest complain about Michael Jordan was, at least in our circles, keeping Isaiah Thomas off the team. Nobody ever questioned how he wanted to compete for championships? Right? Is that fair? Yeah? Okay? The gambling people would love to know the issue with gambling and why he left basketball went to baseball. Had
no business making the Chicago White Sox, absolutely none. Was a terrible baseball player. He just was. And that's okay because he's arguably the greatest I think the greatest basketball player of all time, he's nowhere. You know, he's not a two sports star stop that Deon Sanders was, Bo Jackson was, Brian Jordan was anyway, names like you know, Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Larry Birt is some of the greatest of their
generations. There is really no doubt about how people felt about them. Okay, and I'm talking when I say people, I don't mean fans. I'm talking about others. Others in the game of basketball. Wanted to play with them, knew what they were all about. Do you think the belief about Lebron James's greatness is starting to wane a little bit? I'm gonna say no,
but I think I know what you're getting at. But shep the way I viewed as the people that didn't like Lebron already are piling on with this, with what you're about to get to, and those that have always liked Lebron are in his corner. Well before I get to that, though. I mean, there's there's been plenty of x NBA players who have not necessarily embraced or appreciated Lebron James's climb to the top. Charles Barkley's been critical of
it. There have been plenty of people who have wondered aloud on his motives for doing things his power, but also his shortcuts, not from a personal preparation standpoint, but from getting to teams. So John Stockton recently was on a podcast and said, you know, Lebron James kind of stresses teams out. He says, Lebron James took a helicopter to the top instead of climbing
to the top. That it would have been maddening as a teammate knowing that you're already under a lot of stress, but it makes it even more stressful knowing you could be replaced at any moment in favor of one of Lebron James's guys, in which he calls the Lebron process, like Michael Jordan never did that. Jordan was about tightening his belt and getting better as a team, not taking shortcuts. That the legacy is being clouded a little bit. Remember
Barkley said of Lebron James, the struggle is part of your legacy. But some NBA players say, you know, he's kind of the ultimate cheat. He wants to be known as someone who climbs to the top, when really he wants to be flown to the top in a helicopter. He doesn't do himself any favors when most people believe he held the Lakers hostage. You want me to resign here draft my son, which is really unfortunate because, like I've said before, in the interviews I've seen with Bronni James, the name
just is unbelievable to me. But he's been very cordial, very respectful, and dare I say grounded. Yeah, he's handled this as good or better than you possibly could. Absolutely, he's a fifty fifth pick of the draft and he gets a guaranteed four year contract. That never happens. Folks does with the first round pick, but not a second and not a late second either. It's ridiculous, it really is, But that's the Lakers choice. That's what happens. Another NBA player, ex NBA player, Stephen Hunter,
former center, has come out and said the nepotism is ridiculous. Now, I don't care who you are. You don't have to be an NBA scout to have watched this young man, Ronnie James and recognize it would be an uphill battle for him to reach the NBA. How many teams would he make? Not many, So the pre draft process, at least a handful of scouts said he's not an NBA prospect. Okay, he averaged less than five points per game. Now, I look, I can sympathize and feel bad
for the kid hit cardiac arrest last summer. That didn't help him. I get all that. I would love for him to go out and prove me and other doubters wrong, just because of what I've recognized with him and how he handles himself. I respect the hell out of that, I really do. I mean, for a guy who could easily be a pompous, little smart ass, what does he do. He goes out and he is respectful, and like Trent said, he's handled the situation extremely well. There's a
lot of pressure on him. There's pressure on him at USC, but there's pressure on a lot of kids, right if they want to reach their dream and just a handful get that opportunity. But he is a guy you kind of root for if he weren't Lebron James's son. They're going to be the first father son duo to play in the NBA. At the same time. That is this is not the Griffies. Folks, you remember Ken Griffy Junior and Ken Griffy played in the same outfield in Seattle. Well, Ken Griffy
Senior was part of the Big Red Machine and was an incredible player. He wasn't the equivalent to Lebron James in basketball by any stretch, but he was an incredible player. Ken Griffy Junior was better than his father and was the equal, if not better than Lebron James in his career. For some that may be blasphemous, but if you truly look it up and you truly see what Ken Griffy Junior did in his career and see how dominating he was and
how balanced he was, you would understand where I'm coming from. We're talking about a Hall of Famer, an MVP, a thirteen time All Star. We're talking about a home run derby champ three times over, a seven time Silver Slugger, a ten time Gold Glover, an All Star, MVP, Major League Player of the Year, and the guy who in his career hit six hundred and thirty home runs. That's a lot. He's one of the greatest players of all time. No doubt about it, defensively and offensively.
But Stephen Hunter has come out and taken Lebron James to task and rightfully. So he's basically said, look, you did this. You're the one who came out and forced this upon your son, and now what and now look at what's happening. There's all kinds of pushback. I get it. I totally get it, and I think other people do too. So I'm wondering if Stephen Hunter is dead on. Here's what he said. For those that don't know, late second round picks don't get guarantees, especially before the summer
league. Typically, late second round picks don't get four year guaranteed roster spot deals either. This wasn't earned. I'm sorry, and it's an egregious abuse of power from LBJ and Rich Paul, who's his agent or who's part of his agency. It's a slap in the face to all of the kids out there who work their asses off to get to the league. It's a sneaky Hollywood blank like this that turns out a lot of people off about Lebron James.
He continued, it's another example of what they may be talking about. Right when you try to like him. This is why most people prefer Jordan or Kobe over him, because you know, at least Jordan or Kobe going to be straight shooters. Trust me, Jordan could have gotten one of his sons in the league if he chose to abuse his power like that. Not taking anything away from Browny, nor am I upset at him. Just know that this is a manipulation of our league and the integrity of what it truly
takes to get there. Well said dead on, But how many people will remember? Remember many people thought this too. The younger James was invited to at least ten pre draft workouts. Do you know how many he attended to the Lakers and the Suns? And most people would tell you that is by design. Now here's the negative part of my personality coming out. You ready, how many people are going to remember that we work with somebody who I
know who just she and her boyfriend just love Lebron James. Why I don't know, but I absolutely love him. I suppose the greatness right. Anytime you watch a great player, it's easy to gravitate toward that player. But then I try to be as consistent as possible, and it's not easy, especially with sports. But then don't complain about people who manipulate certain parts of life. Do something for their children or their friends, because first of all,
we all do it. That's number one. But number two, and then support somebody, root for somebody, talk that person up when they do the same thing that you despise. So this is a person who has complained before about nepotism left and right, but it will go out and buy Lebron James jersey. To me, that makes absolutely no sense. To me, that's the ultimate hypocrisy. You're telling people one thing, you're doing something differently about a guy who is exactly who you despise. Now, again, I
try not to hold this against the kid. Have you watched him at all in the summer league. It's hard to watch. Doesn't shoot well, isn't fast enough to drive, isn't strong enough to body up. It's it's a it's a work in progress. I suppose, I doubt. I mean, there's gonna be a time there there's gonna be a time where JJ Reddick is going to put the two on the floor together in a regular season game. It's gonna happen, you know that, right. It may even happen opening
day to appease his superstar. That's what's gonna happen. Now, this is a fine line because there are a lot of superstars. I think it's happened more recently than it has in the past. There's been plenty of superstars who have gotten their way for whatever reason. Let's say it's about a certain coach. Let's say it's about a certain player acquired. Let's say it's about a certain hotel to stay on the stay at on the certain things like that,
Michael Jordan keeping Isaiah off the Dream Team. Yeah, that's what I said, Yeah about Isaiah. But it wasn't just Michael Jordan. You know, Chuck Daily didn't do anything about it. Everybody blames Jordan, and I do too. The difference is I attached two other names to it who were supposedly friends of Jordan, who were supporters of Jordan, but ended up really stabbing
him in the back. Jordan did it, but people knew Jordan and Thomas didn't get along, the worst part of that is that Michael, that Magic Johnson and Chuck Daly didn't stand up for their friend and the person who brought them two titles. They didn't do a damn thing about it. We always blame Jordan, and I get it, I do too, but link the other two part of it. See, we in Michigan won't do that. You know why, because Magic Johnson's one of us. He's a lancing Everett
guy. He won a championship in Michigan State in nineteen seventy nine and he made quote unquote us proud and he still represents too. But he is a spartan, so we won't see a thing about it. We won't do anything about it with Chuck Daily either, because Chuck Daily brought the Pistons their first championships, so we don't want to spoil that. So what's easy to do, Well, it's easy to blame the guy who was part of Detroit's rival. It's easy to blame the guy who didn't respect our team in the first
place. Sure, I've done it too. I blame Jordan all the time, but I also blame Magic Johnson and Chuck Daily. I think it sickens me that those two, I don't want to say, covered it up, but weren't willing to stand up and say, listen, that dude deserves to be on this team. I know what people will say. There's a lot of guys who didn't like him, Karl Malone, for example. There's a lot of guys who didn't want him on the team because of how he handled
certain situations. Absolutely, Why in the world wouldn't you have held Michael Jordan to the same type of standard and how he handled things saying derogatory things about the Pistons? What about Magic Johnson when he shoved Isaiah Thomas and had some hard follows. So what, It's part of basketball, at least back then it was. But we won't say a damn thing about it. Oh, I can't do that. I don't want to. I don't want to say
anything derogatory about my precious Magic Johnson or my precious Chuck Daily. We've taken sides. Meyer hotline is open eight sixty six eight three, eight forty eight forty three.
