S S S S S S S S S S S S. All right back with you on exus and bros. Glad you're joining us here on a Wednesday morning. A lot of things going to be taking place. Sorry, Keith Gave's going to join us at the bottom of the hour, and Rod Beard of the Detroit News will join us at eight thirty five to talk about the NBA Draft, that is tonight. Pistons have two picks, okay, and I know there's a lot of guys out there we don't know of. We're not sure who the hell they are, and I get it, but
it's good to educate ourselves a little bit on these guys. We will see what happens at pick number five and fifty three. I'm not sure fifty three is gonna, you know, make much of a difference. Detroit has also hired Dennis Lindsay as Senior VP of basketball Operations. He was the GM of the Jazz and advisor for Dallas. Not that that's a main point. It's all about Trajan, who's going to be the head coach and who they're going to draft. So the Pistons will stay front and center for a while.
I think at least in this area. By the way, I should also mention this other slight piece of news. Wings traded defense from Jake Walman and a second round pick to San Jose for future picks. And I know there's a lot of people who like Jake Walman oftentimes paired with most cider on the blue line. He's fine, but you've got to find a way to make some room for your team with a young defenseman coming up, and this was
part of it. Now you may not like it. You may think that they should have gotten rid of some other guys, specifically, you know Jeff Petrie, who didn't play real well this past season, but he's under contract. Why you got to get rid of Walman and a second round pick for future considerations, I'm not quite sure. I don't know that type of landscape. Like Steve Eisman, I don't think Jake woman was an untouchable by any
stretch. Question is did you get value in return? We'll see because the big fella Edvonson's going to be here and he's going to make this team. I think that's what it tells you. The phone number on the Meyer hotline is eight sixty six eight three eight forty eight forty three. You can text Sports Radio to twenty one thousand. Ben's our producer. Ben. I know we got at least one text, right. What's it up on regarding the Tigers. Yeah, it says the Tigers have never seen adversity under AJ Hinch
other than losing. He pulls his starters early. He allows players to make mistakes and then pat them on the back. Aj needs to stick a marble hole in his mouth and reboot. He is Larry Parrish all over. Ooh, yeah, that was a I don't know about Larry Parrish. That's Larry Perrish didn't really accomplish much as a manager or AJ Hinch has. That's a that's a scathing text. I'm going to agree with the pulling pitchers too early.
The Marlborough is reference to, obviously Jim Leland. Everybody wants Jim Leland back, and I get it. He's a Hall of Fame manager. Regarding the players, It's not like AJ Hinch rewards them. I'm confused at why you think he rewards them just because he keeps him in the lineup. I'm not sure what you would want a manager to do. You play the players you have, You've got twenty six men on a roster, thirteen of them
are in there on the pitching side, So forget about them. Okay, I'm just I'm just helping you walk through this because this is in reference to McKinstry, I sure struggling the other day. So here's what you have. You have Matt Vierling, you have Riley Green, you have Mark Canna, you have Andy Bonyez, you have Gee or Schello, when sil Perez, Justin, Henry molloy, Jake Rogers, Carson Kelly, Ryan Kridler, Right, I mean, those those are your guys that you're gonna have to You're
gonna have to figure out. There's ten, got Zach mckinsrey. That's eleven. I'm missing some guys here a kill bad. There's eleven? And who am I at? Cole Keith? There's twelve? Or that that's thirteen. I'm sorry because I said Carson Kelly. So you have thirteen guys. Those you are thirteen guys. You want to bench the guy who makes the mistake. So let's just use Zach McKinstry as an example. Now, on everyday shortstop, we know that you can play third base, can play singer base,
can play a little outfield. That means you're infield. Is kreidlerd Short Keith at second? Or Andy E. Banyasje Or Schell at third? Or Matt Veeling and Mark Kennett first? When Cole Keith makes a mistake and he's made nine fielding mirrors, you want to pull him, and you want Andy Ebonyas or Zach McKinstry at second. But you pulled Zach McKinstry because he made a mistake. So those two guys are out right, So now you're left
with Andy A. Banias at second base. Riley Green makes a mistake and left you want him out, So that means you put Justin Henry malloy in there, and Justin Henry molloy. Isn't that good in left field or in the outfield? They should say it's not good defensively? Oh, I'm sorry you want to kill butadu are you cough ak? Who's going to make the same place at Rathergreen? Look, I don't like the defensive flaws either. I think they've got to get better defensively. Period. You and I are
in total agreement on that. You don't have the players to do it. You want him to bitch out a player every time they make a mistake. There is an old saying in sports, and the saying is you praise publicly, you criticize privately. If you don't think aj Hinch has brought a player or two into his office privately and said something to them about what they need to do to get better, you're sorely mistaken. Guaranteed that he's done that. We just don't see it. You don't like the patting on the back.
Okay, I'm sure you're a father, and I'm sure there's a time where your child has done something wrong. Do you always criticize? Is it always a finger in the face, Is it always pointing at the chest? Is it always screaming and raising your blood pressure? Or is there ever a time where you put your arm around them and say it's going to be all right, You're gonna get better. It's not a candiesque way of going about things. It's timing middle of a game. You don't need to scream and
shout all the time. And by the way, we don't always see how he handles the adversity. And I would argue there are other times that they have faced adversity, not just the losing. We'll get to that on the other side of Exis and Bros. After this. Across the great state of Michigan, Bill Simonson. Here from my good friend Josh Carvey. Michigan. You're listening to my good friend Shep. The Huge Show is coming up later today at three right here on the Michigan Sports Network eighteen after the hour, Welcome back Exus and bros. Keith Gave, who wrote for fifteen years for the Detroit Free Press covering the Red Wings, will join us
at the bottom of the hour. A reminder that he is also the author of the Russian five, a book in a movie about those five men wearing the windwheel sweater and his role in getting Sergei Federov Vladimir Konstantinov to Detroit because Keith spent six years working as a Russian linguist for the National Security Agency. Yeah, I'm not sure people knew that. But if you do, good
for you. If you don't, now you do. And he will join us at the bottom of the hour to talk about Pavel dot Suk being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Then at eight thirty five, our friend Rod Beard from the Detroit News will talk about what the e Pistons do tonight because the NBA Draft is tonight and it's Yeah, it's big for Trajan Langdon, who's the new president of the team. But I think it's more than
that. I think it's more than the draft for him. He's got to find a way to fit this team with the right pieces of the right not just veterans, but young players in the league. I say this quite a bit. There is a difference between being a rookie and a young pro, a young Major leaguer, a young NBA player, a young NFL. Like guys Penny Seoul is still a young player for the Detroit Lions, but he's got a lot of experience under his belt already. That makes sense absolutely.
There are others who are young players, rookies. Cole Keith, for example, doesn't have a lot of at bats, I don't have a lot of games under his belt yet he's still learning. Now, you're always learning. I get that. But there are certain guys who come in to a situation who have enough experience under their belt yet still young, who can help some of the younger players along. And that's what Trajan Langdon is going to have to find. So did you see what the Knicks did with the Nets yesterday?
Okay, so they trade Bogdanovich the Knicks to or to the Nets they get Mikel Bridges. Now they traded him for some in more ways than one. It's just not just one place. It's not straight up player. There's picks involved. But the Knicks are trying to find a way two. Obviously they think they're going to go for it. It sure seems like it with this move because Bridges is a hell of a player, really like him. The Nets, in the meantime are piling up draft picks. That's what they're
doing. They're finding a different way. Remember they had the Durant and the Irving experience, they had James Harden, right, they're trying to get some picks back and Bridges is one of those guys. And he's going to play with three former Villanova teammates. He's going to play with Davincenzo, he's gonna play with Brunson. So they got the gang back together. But what the
Nets are getting is they're getting they're setting themselves up for future players. The key for the Pistons, and they have the number five pick, is they've got to get some guys who are still young enough that you'd like to see your team help build around, not just Kid Cunningham, not just to Jaden Ivy, if you believe anymore, Jalen Duran, all right, you've got to find some younger NBA players who have enough experience under their belt can make
differences and you want to see part of your organization for a while. That's a tough ask, I get it. But they're going to use the fifth overall pick. It just seems like it right now. Maybe they trade it. I don't know. I wouldn't have a problem that they traded it. No issue with that at all, But more and more teams who recognize, you know what, we don't necessarily have this. We need to build for the future. I don't think the Pistons are necessarily building for the future because
they've got a lot of these young guys, all right. Obviously you know they're not ready to win right now. So maybe it is the future. But I'm talking about the youth aspect of it. Adding a nineteen year old to this core group. How is that going to help you win right now?
If you don't have the veterans who have played in this league and knows what it takes to win, knows how to bounce back from a loss, and knows how to keep your body and your mind fresh through a long season, knows how to handle a losing streak, knows that when you go to LA, as many temptations as there may be, you better make sure you're keeping your body in shape and ready to go for a long road trip out west. Those are the guys you need. Can you do it? Can
he get those players? We'll soon find out. Now, who are they going to take with the number five pick? There seems to be a consensus. So I was watching the NBA channel last night and they did a mock draft. First of all, is surprised that Reed Shepherd win as high as he did. He's the freshman guard out of Kentucky. But they love his work, ethic, works defensively, really smooth shooter. They got him going
three. The consensus for Detroit has been Mattes Bizellos from the G League Elite ignite three point shooter stretches the floor didn't have a great three point shooting percentage in the league last year. As a matter of fact, it was awful. But teams like his length, his skill set, he's fluid, he can play some defense for you. Last night they were talking about his mental fortitude, his confidence because he's six' nine, he's got to add a
little muscle. Who knows if he's a difference maker. Honestly, would you rather have a guy like that or would you rather have the seven foot two center out of Yukon Donovan Klingen, who's really mobile, really good defender inside, a little rim protection there, really good passer too. By the way, if they did that, would it mean that the Pistons have to move on from Jalen Durhan or Isaiah Stewart. Is he a guy who's going to contribute to your team right away? Or do you go with a guard like
Cody Williams out of Colorado? Do you go with a shooter like Dalton Connect? I mean that, dude, I'm sorry. He led a really good league. He was the eight SEC Player of the Year ran, He's the first team All American. He averaged twenty two points a game. He shot close to four He's got thirty nine point seven percent from deep. He's twenty three, so he's a little bit older, but this team lacks shooting. If you think his skill set translates, why not? What about Ron Holland,
big versatile guy out of the G League. So those are all things we'll be able to talk about with Rod Beard at what will Stefan Castle fall from Yukon? People love him, He's just nineteen, only spend one year in Yukon, but he's versatile and aggressive and talented. So there's some names that you can talk about. Rod Beard will join us at eight thirty five to do just that. Looking forward to the conversation and really looking forward to
the conversation with Keith Gave when we come back. One of the best who has ever been in covering one team. If you want to trust certain writers with the information that you absorbed, you got to be careful. Well with Keith Gave. You never had to worry because Keith Gave followed the Red Wings and wrote about him for the Detroit Freefress for fifteen years. He spent
time at WDFN hosting a radio show giving you his knowledge. He's also written a book, The Russian Five, that was made into a fantastic movie. And as I mentioned earlier, he spent six years six years as a Russian linguist from the National Security Agency and that really allowed him to get a little
bit closer to a lot of the Russian players. One of those Russian players, Pavel dot Suk, who Keith Gave knows exceptionally well, will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame soon and Keith Gave joins us here on exis and Bros. Keith, it's great to visit with you man, Hope you and your family are doing well. Why do you think Pavel dot Suk belongs in the Hall of Fame? Oh my goodness, this was no brainer,
wasn't it. First ballot Hall of Famer. I think all you had to do is watch him play one night and see how much better he was than everybody else who played in the league for a long long time. Some of the moves that kid made were just absolutely remarkable and a very well deserved honor for a guy who spent a lot of really good years and Detroit really saw the best of times in the worst of times in Detroit won a couple of
Stanley cups. Began his career early, early in his career with that dynasty in Detroit, with a couple of Russians still left over from the Russian Five, all the way toward the end of his career when things were falling apart badly, the wheels were coming off, and he got out of Dodge a little early. He left. Let's remember that he left with a couple of years left on his contract or one year left on his contract. That really hurt the Wings. Keith I would argue he was part of that too.
You mentioned the two thousand and two Stanley Cup champions under Scotti Bowman. I would argue it's one of, if not the greatest hockey team ever assembled. How far off am I on that? Oh? No, no, I think you're I think you're absolutely right. Look at all the guys are in the Hall of Fame, and you know there's a couple of guys on that team are in the Hall of Fame yet who should be? And one of them is Chris Osgood I believe. But I think that was the best collection
of talent ever assembled. And you know you could do it then, you know, all Mike Elich had to do was open up his check book and sign a guy like Brett Hall, sign a guy like Luke Robotie, and on and on and on to go with you know, Chris Chelly os and Steve Beiser and Sergei Fedrob and my god, what a team wasn't it. It was unbelievable. Ten Hall of Famers from that team now, And you're right. I think Chris Osgod, he does belong in there. He doesn't
get nearly enough credit. I think people talk about the team he had in front of him, but for some reason that same argument doesn't you know, coincide with a guy like Grant Fear for example. But I think he's I think he's fantastic. Keith gave joining us here on Ex's and broching falm on Twitter at Keith gave with dot Suke. I think there's a lot of people, and he almost played in the shadows of a lot of guys. He
accepted his role. He was so fundamentally sound, he was so electrifying, and I thought he spoke better English than he than he really came across with because he was kind of off to the side a little bit and wanted to make sure he got his own privacy as a person. How much did you enjoy being around him and talking to him? Well, I enjoyed it immensely. And you're right, he wasn't It wasn't easy to get close to.
I was able to get to know him a little bit better, spend some time with him, off off eyes, away from the rink, and so on. When you know his His agent, Dan Milstein, was the executive producer of the Russian five film. He put up the money to make for us to make that film and know when Pava was getting ready to uh uh to bail on the Red Wings to go back to uh Russia to play his
final years. Uh. Dan asked me to uh meet with Babo and you know, have dinner and uh basically help assemble or help write a story for somebody uh to uh to explain why Pavo was, you know, wanted to leave and go back and play hockey in Russia. Uh in front of his family and so on. It was they knew it was a sensitive issue. Uh. I met with them, We talked for you know, a long time, uh, and they they asked me to hold off. They weren't quite ready yet to announce it. And then when they were, they went
out and got Mitch Album to write that story. So so I uh, but I got to know Paba a little bit more personally, and he was he was pretty uh uh you know, UH, he wasn't easy to get to know. I don't care if you're Russian or American. He kept to himself, and you're right about the fact that he could speak a lot better English than he led on. He didn't like to answer a lot of questions and when you know, when the question came along that uh that he didn't
like it. Was in one of those don't speak English kind of things, you know. Vladbrick Constantino was like that a little bit too. Yeah, he was a six round draft pick. How did the Red Wings? Yeah, how did the Red Wings find you know, the players like Zetterberg and and Lidstrom and dot Suk in later parts of the draft and be so successful? What was what did they do that no other team was doing well? The guy, the guy who gets all the credit for that was their chief
scout over there still is Hacken Anderson. Uh he he Zenberg was playing for a smaller club over there. And uh Hacken Anderson actually went to he went to a game to scout another guy, a defenseman that that he liked, and he wound up falling in love with a little guy on the other team. And uh he found a way to see him one more time. Uh. And then there was a there was a third time that there were there's a big tournament in Moscow that he he had hoped to see Zetterberg one more
time. And there was also a scout with the Calgary Flames, you know who were who was going to go see that game as well. Uh and and and scout out Uh Pablo dots and everybody else, and that there there was the weather problems, the flight was canceled. They never made it to the game. So uh it. It's been uh said that Hawk and Anderson is the only NHL scout who saw Pablo Dosic before he drafted. The Wings kind of snuck him in in the sixth round, one hundred and seventy first
overall. Can you believe that for a Hall of Fame player? I know, and just so people know, litz from was a third round pick. I believe Zedberg was a seventh round choice, seventh seventh round, two hundred and tenth overall, and the seventh round the following year after Pablo Dotsuk. You know what, that's just brilliant scouting. And you know Thomas Holmstrom was a late round draft pick. Really, Hawkin Anderson hit some Grand Slam home
runs late and late in the draft, which was really important. If you remember Matt In the year that Zedberg was drafted, they didn't have a first round pick. They trade a lot of first round picks away for some of those Hall of Fame players. If you remember, they traded two first round picks to Chicago for Chris Chellio's So they needed to hit some home runs later in the draft, and they did. Yeah, they sure did, And we're hitting a home run right now. Talking with Keith gave you can fall
m on x at. Keith gave the story of you. I know you tell it all the time and it probably gets a little tired for you, but the story of you being able to work for the Red Wings to a certain extent and get guys like feder Off and Constantinoff over here is worth retelling. Can you give our audience, who might be younger and not always understand this, and maybe if they haven't read or watched the Russian Five, which they should, if you could give them just a quick synopsis of how that
came about and what you did well. The Wings drafted both Sergei and Vladdie in the nineteen eighty nine draft, that tremendous draft, greatest of all time. They got Sergei in the fourth round after after drafting Nick Lisserman the third,
and then Vladdy in the eleventh round. But you know, about three weeks or so after the draft, I got invited to lunch by Jim Lights, then the executive vice president of the team, and Mike and Mary Nilich's former son in law now asked me the lunch and essentially asked me if I could do them a favor and go to Helsinki, Finland, where the Russians were having a training camp, and maybe try and get access to UH to
Sergei and Vladdie and pass along messages to them. I write the messages in Russian and sneak it to them and let basically let these players know that the Wings wanted them to defect and come over to play hockey for the Detroit Red Wings. And at first I said, no, there's no way I can do that. I worked for the Detroit Free Press. And then he mentioned a lot of money that they were willing to pay me. You know, started at six figures, Matt, and I know where that I know where
that starts. So that's life changing money for a schmuck like me making the money I was making to the Free Press at the time. But so I told him I couldn't you know, I wasn't able to do it. I covered the you know, hockey for the Detroit Red Wings for the Detroit Free Press, and I don't want to put my career in jeopardy. Which I was doing. And I thought about it for three or four days, and I called Lights back. I said, there might be a way that I
can do this. I'd really like to give it a shot. I said, I'm not going to take a dime from you. I don't want anything. I'll pay my own way over there. I cash in some air miles and pay my way, and I'll try and get the messages to both those players. And on one condition, he said, what said? I said, when these guys come over here, I want to be your first phone call, so I can have the story first for my readers at the Detroit Free Press. And he said, deal, And so I went over there.
I went to Helsinki, and I was dodging a KGB guy for a little while trying to get access to these two guys. I did. I passed along messages to both of them, and it was a little bit dicey, a little scary in moments. But eleven months later, in July of nineteen ninety, I got a phone call from Jim Lights. I was having dinner and I said, Keith, Yeah, this is Jim Lights. Yeah, I mean mister Ilich's airplane coming back from the Goodwill games in Portland,
Oregon. Guess who's sitting next to me? And I said, who's that? He said, Sergei Federov. So I shoved my plate away. I was having dinner. I grabbed my notebook, I took some notes. I got my laptop out and I started writing. I called the desk at the Free Press, actually not the sports editor, the city editor the Free Press. We're pushing deadline right in the evening and he said, what are you calling for? Hockey doesn't start for another three months. And I said,
what do you go got going on page one tomorrow? He said why, what do you care? And I said, because whatever you got, I'm going to blow out of the water. He said what, And I said, there's a Russian defector named Sergi Federov on his way to Detroit to play hockey for the Detroit Red Wings. He just defected from the Goodwill Games in Portland, Oregon. And there's a long pause, and all of a sudden, he said, you got thirty five minutes and he hung up the phone.
So I had thirty five minutes to write that story that wound up on page one above the fold. The next day that Sergi federal was on his way to Detroit. I hope you have that article framed in your house. I do not. I don't. I was I was never you know, I was never in love with my own work to the point that I say, boxes and boxes, I don't have it. And you're right, I
should go to the Free press arch get that. But how did you how did you gain the trust of feder Off and constantinof through writing messages that had to be challenging. Well, it was, Uh, it was not so much a matter of earning trust or anything like that at first. I mean, all I need to do was get I snuck a letter that I had
written on the airplane coming over to Helsinki to each of those guys. I put it in one of those media guys, you know, those those a little five by nine, but you know, the old media guys have protected in there. And uh, basically, as soon as I was able to get it to them, I saw this KGB guy staring at us, staring at down, watching every move just about and as soon as I got that into their hands, I basically said in Russia and I said, okay,
thank you very much. I'll give you a call and try and interview you down the road, but you know, good luck and I got the hell out of there. H so, and I don't know what happened after that. You know, I just called lights when I got back to the hotel and I said, Jim, I was able to get the messages to these guys. I'm uh and I'm out now. I don't want to hear about it. I don't want to talk about it. I don't anybody know about it until these guys start coming over, and then I want to write about
it and so. And then when Sergei and Vlady did come over, they remembered me. And you know, it wasn't immediate trust at all, because the Russians don't trust anybody for for a long long time. It takes it forever to earn their trust. But when you do, you've got real good friends. And I was able to do that with those guys, with and with Sovogaty saw Andiger Larianov, Slavakoso and so on. They were a great, great, great group of men to get to know. I'll tell you
that, Yeah, they sure were. But you deserve it. It's well done. Keith gave joining us here on Exes and Bros. About Pavelo dot Soup being into the Hall of Fame, the other player or the other person, I should say, he's not going in as a player, even though he did play a couple of years as as executive. Colin Campbell is going to be part of that class, that seven member class with guys like Shay Webber and Jeremy Ronick as well. He was really impactful in the Red Wings
success. Why do you think he deserves to be in there more of time served in the NHL throughout his career. You know, he came to Detroit as a hard nosed defenseman, and when his career came to an end, they elevated him to an assistant coach under Nick Polano. When Nick was elevated, has essentially fired as coach and they brought in Harry Neal and then Brad
Pardon. Colin Campbell stayed on his assistant coach and he was and then he was coached through the Jacques de Maiers years as well, and spent a lot of time trying to really unsee to both Jacques de Mars and Jim Devlano. Colan was was trying to get their jobs while he was in Detroit he left left Detroit, went to New York as he spent time as a head coach there and then wound up as working for Gary Bettman as the senior vice president
of the National Hockey League for a while there. You remember he was the league disciplinarian. Yeah, that's right. But you know, Colan. Colan has had a really a really good career, nice career, and frankly, I've done him a long long time and we're really well deserved too, Hey, Keith, One last thing, The sixty members of the Red Wings are now in the Hall of Fame. It screams, it reeks of greatness from
that franchise. But it's been a while now with Steve Eisman at the helm, and this might be one of those years where coming up where people are like, Okay, we never talks about the aser plan. Let's see it come to fruition and the postseason. What's this team missing? Oh? Well, miss is still quite a lot, but goaltending most of all. I think I was really kind of disappointed that they weren't able to outdid Ottawa for
Linis Almark from Boston. They needed a goaltender. Their defense. They've worked hard on their defense, for years now and that's sort of come together. But they really need a They need a legit number two center. There are a lot of people in the league who think that Dylan Larket is not really a number one center, but he's there by default that he's probably a number two and maybe on a great team, on a great team Stanley Cup team,
he's a number three center. Look at Steve Eiserman was probably the number three center on those Stanley Cup teams in the late nineties. But they need help down the middle as well. Still work in progress, you know. They they missed the playoffs this year by zero points. Well I would I would have loved to have seen a playoff game between them and Washington, you know, for that last playoff spot, but that didn't happen. They're close
if they can make it interesting. A lot of people think this is the year they should finally get back in the playoffs. We'll see. I'm a little bit I have mixed up opinions about that. It's going to be tough because because the other teams are coming. Yeah, you wish De Troit was coming a little bit. I wish you were still writing about the Red Wings.
