Exus and Bros. Ben is our producer. You can find us via the Meyer Hotline by joining the conversation eight sixty six eight three, eight forty eight forty three. Sports Radio to twenty one thousand is how you text the program as well. We'll get to more texts. Love the phone call from Chris and Sheboygan. I get where he's coming from. Where we're talking about the Jared Goff contract and Chris is like, you can't pay him more than Patrick

Mahomes. Patrick Mahomes is the standard. Is Is that fair to assume, not just among quarterbacks, but among players? Is that fair? Okay? I hope so, because he's the real deal. He's one of the best of all time. I know it's early in his career, but he's one of the best of all time. Right, Okay? When Patrick Mahomes signed his contract, Patrick Mahomes broke the record. He signed a contract worth four hundred fifty million dollars, a ten year deal worth four hundred fifty million dollars

with one hundred and forty two million guaranteed. That set the standard. It's not as simple as just saying because he's the best, that means no one else can be paid higher than he is. If that's the case, then the highest paid player in basketball would be Nicola Gilkic. Right, he just won another MVP. Is that? Do you understand where I'm coming from? But he's not. Do you think Kevin Durant now. Career wise, he is. But do you think Kevin Durant right now is the best player in

the NBA? No, neither do I. But he gets paid higher than Nikola Jokic. Do you let me ask you this, Do you think Alexandrovtchkin is the best player in the NHL? Me either, But he was the highest paid player a year ago, more so than Austin Matthews, more so than Connor McDavid, more so than Nikita kuchar Off. It's just not the way it works. I understand where you're coming from. I understand why you think it should be happening. Why you believe that no one should get more

than Patrick Mahomes. Yeah, but it's about timing. I suppose the only place that truly matters, or it's most appropriate, is baseball. Joey Otani is the best player in baseball. He gets paid like it. No one's going to surpass seventy million dollars a year, right, No way. I think the next highest paid player per year is Max Schuzer at forty three million. But do you believe that Max Schuzer deserves to be paid more than let's just say, Aaron Judge. I don't Aaron Judge is an everyday player.

But that's how it works. Let me take it another step further. Anthony Rendone in baseball makes more per year than Mike Trout and Corey Seeger and Nolan Arnatto and Francisco Lindor in Carlo's career in Gencarlos Stanton and Jose L. Tuove. I can go on and on and on. Do you think that's right? Hell, no, it's not right. But it's when he signed the contract. You can't hold it against Jared Goff or the Lions for the landscape

changing. Since Patrick Mahomes signed his ten year, four hundred and fifty million dollars deal, which still, by the way, is the richest. He's just not making the most per year. Phone number on the Meyer hotline eighty six six eight three eight forty eight forty three. Chris and sheboygan in a perfect world, in a logistical world, in what would be a logical world,

you're one hundred percent right. But things change because the landscape change, because the salary cap goes up, because teams are put in different situations, because players have different seasons or better season. Chris, I don't think any possible way, Ricky Fowler should make more than Jack Nicholas ever did playing golf. Jack Nicholas is the greatest golfer of all time. Ricky fowlers won how

many tournaments? But Ricky Fowler makes more than in a year playing golf and Jack Nicholas did in his career playing the sport, or pretty damn close to it. So don't mean that to me. That to me right, there is a perfect example of how how things change. And it's just as much as we believe it should be the case that the best deserve to get paid the best. It's not a corporate office, it isn't. I mean, that's just unfortunately, that's just the way it is. So many different things

are factored into it. Now our phone number on the Meyer hotline eight sixty six eight three eight forty eight forty three. See, I was saying, I know these are these are tough examples, but I use the Ricky Foller example because I think it's a fair one. It's all about timing. Ricky Fowler last year made close to ten million dollars folks ten million, nine point eight nine point eight according to sports Kida, Jack Nicholas in his career between

nineteen sixty two and two thousand and five, made five point seven. There is a guy who's won seventy three tournaments and eighteen majors in his career. Okay, he's, like I said, arguably the greatest golfer of all time. How about Ricky Fowler? And I don't mean to pick on one guy, because Ricky Fowler's a nice enough guy and everything else like that, But do you think he's a better Hell no, he'll never be never, But he's gonna make more because that's just the way it is in today's golf.

There's more availability. Guys won ten tournaments in his entire career, that's it. He's never been higher ranked than four. And the ten tournaments, by the way, only six around the PGA Tour. I ever want a major, But he in one season almost doubles with the greatest player of all time made in his career. It's because of timing. There's more money available. Right if Jack Nicholas played today, you'd make as much as Tiger Woods would.

I understand Chris where you're coming from. It's just not how it works, and it's not the lion's fault and It's sure as hell, isn't Jared Goswall. I do appreciate the phone call though, and we always appreciate the tech Tech Sports Radio to twenty one thousand. Our text line is sports rated twenty one

thousand. Right now nineteen after the hour, Ben, I know we got some texts. Why don't we get to them? Okay? Yeah, the first one is back from Niles on golf or GoF it says, I just think GOFF has the best O line, really good weapons compared to most, and a great coaching staff. I think twelve other qbs could do the same. Good situation got him paid, should have given him one ninety six for four and one hundred and forty guaranteed. Well, those are specific numbers.

That's great. I'm with you that you come to the table with an idea of how much you want. I love that. So he's actually thought about this, whether or not Golf would have taken it. So let's let's say you do. Let's say you come to the table with those numbers, and I love that he's done his research. How much is that per season? He said, four years, four years, one ninety six, four years,

one ninety six. Okay, so you're looking at it forty nine million rather than fifty three forty nine million, just below Jalen Hurts per year and one forty guaranteed. Not that I don't think it's fair, because I wouldn't disagree with it from your perspective. But let's say Saint Jared Goff's camp says, no, what do you do? I'm not saying he has the lions over a barrel. I'm just asking what do you do you play this year?

With catchphrase lane duck quarterback right because he's not signed. And let's say you have as successful a season as you did a year ago. Then the price goes up. Let's say he doesn't do as well. Then you're in a situation you have to look forward. As a general manager, you must look forward. You can't just stay in the moment. What do you do about your quarterback situation? You turned to Hendon Hooker. You're not going to

get a free agent quarterback the guy the guy. There aren't guys out there. They're just not You're not turning things over to the next Russell Wilson. So you have to have something where both parties are going to agree the sounds of your deal better than I like the sounds of this current deal. Who wouldn't if you're more money to sign whoever it may be, who's ever coming up next? Okay, I just think you have to be prepared that as

much as we would like it, everybody wants a deal. Who wouldn't want a deal? The problem is you got a guy on the other side whose agent is negotiating for him, saying, you know what, this is the going rate for my guy. This will get surpassed. There's no doubt it'll get surpassed by somebody. It's not as much as Joe Burrow. I'm surprised that Joe Burrow number isn't surpassed by now. But somebody's going to get it.

Who that is, I'm not sure will they have as much credentials as Burrow or the other guys who've already mentioned in the program early in the six o'clock hour. No, but think about it. I like Kirk Cousins. He's a good dude. Look at Kirk Cousins numbers. He's one in three in the postseason. Never let a team do a super Bowl. He's making forty five million. That tells you something about the going rate for quarterbacks. Let's go to the Meyer hotline. It's eight six, eight three, eight

forty eight forty three. Who's up next? Bet? Yeah, we got Robert and Pontiac. Hey Robert, how are you today? Fine? Thank you? Mad and how are you? I'm listening here on WTRX thirteen thirty. Oh that's great. Yeah, wait to give me a shout out. I appreciate that very much. Yeah. Yeah, this caller is on Oakland. You grad so I'm still you. You have a feeling of euphoria from

the basketball season, You should. I didn't call for that reason alone, but I wanted just to chime in on the Jared Golf deal, which you've been talking about quite a bit, and I'm all in on it. I think it's a good deal. And I can remember when the team I think was one in seven under him and they were losing, and I kind of thought he was on an audition kind of almost like maybe like a broadcast audition if you move to a new market. And he passed the audition with flying

colors, as we can look forward and see. And I think that's admirable on his part. And I think he has the qualities to be an athlete, which we can kind of fall in love with in Detroit. We kind of love athletes to try hard and have a good character. And I think, what do you like, what do you like about him, and what do you like about the deal? Well, what I like about him he doesn't have any monkey business. He's short with his words, and he's precise,

and he's not doing any nightlife or any kind of shenanigans. And the deal I think is comparable as you mentioned the Kirk Cousins deal, and I think he's the better player than Kirk Cousins, and I think that's just spose. The NFL kind of has this, you know, how the you mentioned it, how salaries kind of are platformed. So Kirk Cousins at the benchmark, and I think golf's right in there with that benchmark slightly better. Interesting.

So you've got no problem with the length of the contract, the guaranteed money, or the annual salary that he's about to make. Well, you know, I'm a fan, Matt, so you know, of course, they get their money. They deserve their money. Their careers are short for the most part, so I'm all for it. They can always restructure, right if something down the line they need to sign bigger, more players. They can restructure deals nowadays quite easily, it seems like. So I think

that's a good point. You give them more money and they restructure. Pat Patrick Mahomes restructured his deal. Matthew Stafford did that a couple of times in Detroit as well. He restructured his deal. Yep, yeah, yeah, good good stuff. Thanks Robert. Appreciate the phone call. Always enjoy the conversation. I'm glad you're listening right there. On WTR Sports Extra thirteen thirty am, coming out of Flint. Let's get to some more techs the text

line is sports rated to twenty one thousand. What else we got, ben, Yeah, it says golf had it made in LA two. He is the product of great staffs. Well, okay, here's my issue with this. I believe it was trash Man Niles who brought it up in his second text. You know that he's surrounded by really good players or suddenly you're a product of a system. Can you tell me what quarterback isn't surrounded by really good players, What winning quarterback isn't surrounded by really good players? And how

many are not system guys? My favorite quarterback probably of all time. Well, it used to be Frank talkin to him when I was a kid, and then Joe Montana. People said the same thing about Joe Montana. He's a product of a system. It's the West Coast offense. It's Bill Walsh, it's George Seaffert and so on and so forth. Oh and by the way, he's got great players around him, Jerry Rice, John Taylor, Roger Craig, Tom Rathman. Not to mention the offensive line, Jesse Soipolo.

Right, wait a minute, he's making them better, they're making him better. That's what team sports is about team sports is being surrounded by really good players in order for you to win a championship. You're trying to tell me Patrick Mahomes hasn't had really good players on his Super Bowl Championship teams. Find me a guy who's won a title in the NFL or who's made it

to a probosom without having some good players around him. Quick time out them back with more on the other side on exis and bro stay with us. Huge cheer for my good friends from Flying Ace Whiskey. Now it's an American

I know we have more texts, so why don't we get to those texts? Ben

fire Away. Yeah, it says if GoF is over now overpaid, so is Joe Burrow, who missed games with an injury, and Lamar Jackson, who is who has less playoff wins, although he does have more rushing yards than golf. But that's not what you pay QBS for. Right on, That's similar to what we've said, you could use that argument in just about any any sport. To be honest with you, I mean you could sit there and say, all right, how in the world does a guy like

Bradley Beal make close to what Lebron James makes? And I use the baseball example to to me, it's simply ridiculous than Anthony wren Done, who has been constantly injured for the Los Angeles Angels. It's the perfect reason why you got to be so careful when you are grabbing free agents. All right, I mean, nobody would have guessed that he would have been this ineffective. But a guy who hasn't played more than fifty eight games in a single season

since signing the deal with the Angels heartbreaking. You feel bad for them that this guy is making this year almost thirty nine million dollars and he's played nineteen games, and yet he makes more than so many great players, big name players. Who'd you rather have Anthony rendonor or Mookie Betts. It's not even a question. You don't even have to follow baseball. You can just be

a you know, a fringe baseball fan and recognize that one. But he makes more, I guess what I'm saying is it's not always fair, dude, It's just not Let's go to another text, Ben go ahead says, to the next uh yeah, to the next level of winning a Super Bowl.

Golf has to make the big scramble when a big important moment arises the way Perty did late in the championship game and Mahomes always makes, or the team has to up sorry no go ahead finish, or the team has to continue keeping golf in quick dump off throws and hopefully that gets it done. That gets it done. It's not who he is. It's just it's it's not who he is. Man. I just what you're expecting there is not going to happen. I'm sorry, sorry, I don't want to disappoint you.

He's not. I mean, Lamar Jackson outrushed a ton of running backs. He was like twenty second in the National Football League in rushing yards. It's just not who he's going to be. Justin fields was like that. You don't want that, do you know. I think what the Texter is suggesting is it's not that you have to rush for a lot of yards, it's you have to rush for key yards. And I think Jared Goff did that on a number of occasions a year ago. Does he do it when

he has to? I can't recall specifics, but I'm going to say, yes, you can play him if you're a defense to where you don't mind him getting outside the pocket because you're not afraid of him rushing for a first down. Let's say he's not going to scare you. Now, there are other quarterbacks. You could say the same thing about Will Levice, Matthew Stafford, a number of others. Let's go to the full lines. The Meyer hotline is open for you. Eight six six, eight three, eight forty

eight forty three. Then who's up next? We got Dave in Hudsonville. Hi, Dave, good morning to you. How's every morning morning, chef? How he's doing? Man? Very well? Thank you? You know.

I think your point is well made too on GoF in the sense that it would be nice if Gough was more of an athletic quarterback, in the sense that other teams don't have to put a spy on it, they don't have to commit a defender to him, like the Lions have to do with a number of running quarterbacks when they play them in order just to have that other defensive piece that goes on with Justin Fields or any of the quarterbacks that

can run. But that's that You're right, that's not Goff's game. It's just another thing that our offensive coordinator and Goff have to plan for when it comes to dump offs or check offs or other things that go on. But I did want to say on your conversation on contracts, you know, your point is really well made on this is just how it is when it comes

to contracts. I'll go back to Miggy, you know, one of the challenges that I think, and I love Miguel Cabrera, I mean, we were blessed to be able to watch him play his career, the prime of his career, you know, in Detroit and so forth. But those contracts are meritocracy in the sense they pay over the extended life, and Miguel was hanging on the last couple of years to collect his paycheck. He wasn't the

player he was. If they could ever figure out a way to have those de escalate based on age, you know, and maybe skill sets, and it wouldn't be always the case. You know, a guy like Lebron or other people who's still performing to those ages can earn bonuses, but I think that's a challenge when it comes to how GM set up contracts, but it's how the nature of the game works. But the other thing I would say too with Goff, I think you have to pay GoF in the range of

the fourth or fifth best quarterback to the tenth best quarterback. I think that's where he slots in. And I think you can also make a deal with him because he went through LA being shunned and kind of said, go ahead, we don't need you anymore. I think he loves it in Detroit. I think he feels appreciated, and I think he would give and understand. If I want to play four more years in a winning situation, I'll take a little bit less, don't you. I think that's very well said.

I would say if I were an athlete and I'm twenty nine, fair to say that's the prime of your career still, I think so, Yeah, If I'm an athlete and I'm coming off the type of season that he's come off of and I'm still in my prime, I'm not giving deals. I'm going to make as much money as I possibly can. Because I realized that my window might be one more year, but probably not even in my window of playing at a high light level. Might be another five or six at

the most. Look, I hate to use this comparison, but I'm going to anyway, because I think Patrick Mahomes is the best and one of the best I've ever seen. But Patrick Mahomes when he's thirty eight is going to make sixty million dollars. That's a lot of money for a thirty eight year old quarterback who relies heavily on his mobility. Right Kansas City used what they

thought was the prudent method of keeping him locked up. Next year. Next year, Patrick Mahomes begins a run where he will make sixty six million dollars, and then it'll be sixty eight, and then it'll be sixty four before it goes down a little bit and then escalates in the final two years of his deal. So when we say he should be paid this and right now, if you look at it, he's a million two million dollars more per year. This is on a yearly basis more than the number four, number

five guy. So you're in line with what you're talking about. Okay, you said between you know four and number ten or for five and number ten. Well, if you look at number four, it's Lamar Jackson, He's at fifty two million, Gof's at fifty three. If you look at number five, it's Tyler Murray. Yeah, and don't you think for GoF, I think Goth and for a lot of these guys, but especially Goth, their ability to feel valued and their ability to feel loved by the place they

play. Because he's been rejected by a place he plays is almost just as important. It's not as important as the money, but it's really important to those guys, especially someone like him, to feel like I'm in a place that loves me. They see my value and they want me to be here. When he gets his name chanted, that might be some of the best incentive for him to sign a deal that gives the hometown discount than anything in Detroit. Yeah, if you look at it like it's a discount, I

agree with you. I don't think he was necessarily unwanted in Los Angeles. I guess it's how do you determine what somebody he was upgraded? Yeah, that's fair enough. Yeah, and thanks for the phone, go really good. I mean, David, I do appreciate the conversation. Dave brings up so many good points every time he calls. He could host his show.

I do believe. Look, La thought they had to give up something to get the guy they wanted in Matthew Stafford, and it paid off for them because they won a super Bowl. And Matthew Stafford was really good when healthy a year ago he was. He was really good. How many more years he has left, I don't know, but he's still a high end quarterback. I don't think he was discarded from Los Angeles, my word, not Dave's. I don't think he was discarded or unwanted per se. And he

led a team to a super Bowl. If you're going to give well, look at all the weapons that he had, including the defensive side to the ball with Aaron Donald his own. Yeah, okay, he did, But so did Matthew Stafford when they won the Super Bowl. I hate to tell you, but Tom Brady had a lot of talent on his team when they won six rings. He had talent in Tampa. Doesn't mean that he wasn't

the most talented. I'm just telling you, as a football team, you're not winning a championship if you don't have really good players, and it's funny. We'll use the argument for Brady and Mahomes even though they have two of the greatest tight ends to ever play, and they have really good guys on defense. I mean, Chris Jones a hell of a player for Kansas City folks. Just because Patrick Mahomes isn't throwing them a football doesn't mean that he's

not a really good player. But you know, with Pittsburgh, when Pittsburgh won their championships with Terry Bradshaw, look at how many great players they had. Nobody's holding that against Terry Bradshaw, four and oho super bowls. Why would you. It takes a really good team to win it all. That's why they call it a team sport. This isn't Novak Djokovic in a finals okay against Roger Federer. These are team sports that require a cohesive unit in

more than one way. So yes, I get why people feel like Jared Goff needs a certain system. I think if there's a lot of quarterbacks in the history of the sport who have needed a certain system to the phone line, the Meyer hotline eight six eight three eight forty eight forty three, then who's next? Jake and Grand Rapids. Jake, thanks for listening to WMAX ninety six point one FM The game. How you doing, Bill? How about yourself? Good? Thanks buddy, Oh yeah, I wanted to try

man. And I feel like fan base is collectively when a new contract comes out for mainly a quarterback, everybody's either up in arms or they you know, think it's a good deal, whatever which wayever they go. But you know, two or three years down the line, four or five other quarterbacks get paid up team million dollars more. And for me, when I saw the number come down, it was only one hundred and seventy million guaranteed, I thought that was a win. I thought he would, you know,

be closer to the two hundred million. He'd be looking in that area, just because you know, people can argue he's a system quarterback. But at the same time, you know, he has Gibbs and Monty and he still was the second overall passing yards in the NFL last year, and you know, he take one of those guys away and he probably beats two out for overall passing yards. I just think everybody kind of just gets caught up in

the moment with you know, oh, that's so much money. Well, in two years that number is not going to be anywhere near top ten money anymore. It's going to be twelve to fourteenth. That's just the way the you know, NFL quarterback contracts go. So yeah, next mirror inn eight for a while and not not really put too much emphasis on, oh, we're paying Jared Goff this much money. Well, it's not going to be that much in twenty twenty six per se. Yeah, Jake, it's an

excellent point. I don't know if it'll be twelve or fourteen. I don't think he'll drop that far. But I think you're you're dead on. When Patrick Mahomes signed his extension ten years, four hundred and fifty million dollars, it was twenty twenty four years later, and that was the highest paid So he was making roughly, you know, forty five million dollars a year if you break it down like that, right, So when you look at it

four years later, where does he rank. There's a lot of guys who are ahead of him, because ahead of him, Watson is ahead of him. Those are each of the last two years. Murray's the last two years, Hurts is the last two years, Jackson is last year, Herbert Owes over the last two years, golf is this year. So those things all

forced Patrick Mahomes down to what is it, eight or nine? So I think you're dead on there when things change like that, And thanks to the phone call, Jake, we appreciate you listening when things change like that and you get that massive deal. The structure of the NFL. The change is about to happen because of so many different factors, including the salary cap going up because certain players may leave a team and open up more money, the

timing of a quarterback contract. All those things are a major factor. Meyer hotline is eight six six eight three eight forty eight forty three. We've had some really good calls on this so far. We've also had some really good tech spend. We got another one. Yeah, we have one that just came in and says, the reason he had such a good season is because of the running game. They had to prepare for that. Our on line is the best. That's why we are so good. Don't disagree with that

at all. Is it the sole reason? No, but it's sure as hell helps. And by the way, that's okay. It's really important, really important. Baltimore had a really good season, didn't They had the most wins regular season wins beat Detroit. They were the number one seed in the AFC. Lamar Jackson was part of this, but they were the number one rushing team in the league. Sam Francisco had a really good season. They were the number one seed in the NFC TI Detroit for number of wins,

a third best rushing team in the league. That's all right, Miami, Buffalo, Philadelphia all among the top ten rushing teams in the league. I don't hold that against a quarterback or a team in general. It's a strength. It's important. You must have balance, you know all this. You've got to have balance in football. You can't be just a running team. You can't be just a passing team. It's become more of a passing league,
