I saw somebody tweet out the other day and do you agree with this Rolling Stones rankings of greatest guitar as Ever, Alex Lifson was not in there for Rush and this is a Rush song in case you didn't know, so I thought, exactly, how is he not in there? Or George Lynch for crying out loud? These guys are great guitarists. George Lynch is phenomenal if he played in dock and then the Lynch Mobinstone. Welcome back, ex'es and bros. Glad you're with us on this Tuesday morning. Myer hotline eight sixty
six eight three eight forty eight forty three. Here's another way you almost know. The Tigers are venturing into irrelevancy, which is really too bad. More people are starting to watch for the opponent than they are their team. That's one and number two. The passion or disappointment, frustration, being upset is no longer there. You've got two months left of strictly Tigers baseball, now that the Stanley Cup Finals is over, now that the NBA Finals is over.
You're not calling me to talk about the European Championships in soccer. You're not gonna call me about Wimbledon. I doubt you're gonna call me about maybe the Rocket Mortgage Classic. I hope so if it means that much to you. But golf, some majors are winding down, right, You've got two months of baseball. It's gonna be baseball talk. And again, you've listened to the show long enough. I don't like being the guy who says,
you know, let's just complain about it. Let's just sit here, open the microphone and bitch left and right about why the Tigers aren't any good again this year. I hate doing that. But I mean, that's the reason we talk about the Tigers is because it's something that seems to matter to you, and because that's what's going on in our world of sports, you and me. That's what's happening. You're not talking about Team USA cricket, even
though that ended, and I doubt you're talking about the Olympics. Okay, I just if you are, the phone line's open for you. You can text US Sports Radio to twenty one thousand. I just don't think that's what's on your mind. I think what's on your mind is how's this going to turn around? And I don't think you mean for this year. I think you mean in general. Where do you see the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel, Folks, this is not the Detroit Pistons. The Pistons
are young, right, second youngest team in the NBA. So you understand the growing pains there. Oh, it's hard. Seventeen wins last year, fourteen wins this year. That is that is brutal to go through. But the Tigers are different. The Tigers are a lot different. It's not like they're super young. Think about it. Is Andy Banias young and I'm I mean like within their first few years. No Matt Vierling, no Mark Canna, no Overchella, no Carson Kelly, no Jack Flaherty. No, I
mean we go on and on and on. There are some young guys Cole Keith who started to turn things around, which is great, not defensively but offensively. Riley Green still to a certain extent, right Carry Carpenter went healthy. Jake Rogers. No, they're not a young team. Certain places around the diamond are inexperienced, but they're not a young team. Ask yourself this, do you really believe that Jake Let's use Jake Rodgers as an example.
All right, even though he didn't play last night, it was Carson Kelly, and I think he had a couple of hits. But Jake Rogers, is he young? Yes or no? Ask yourself that he's twenty nine. I don't know if you know that he's twenty nine years old. Now he's only had seven hundred at bats. So in that sense, you may say, well, he's young. I look at it like he's in experience, but he's not young. Twenty nine. You're supposed to be in your prime?
Is that fair? What is your prime? Your prime is somewhere depending. I mean not all major leaguers. I wouldn't say twenty four, but I would say twenty five or so. Okay, by then you should have a couple of years under your belt. But let's say twenty five, twenty six to thirty, that's your prime. It doesn't mean he can't play past it, because there's plenty of really good players, plenty of really good players who are playing in their thirties and are outstanding. Like Bryce Harper, he's
thirty one. Is he still in his prime? He's a superstar. So I suppose you could say he's still in his prime. But that dude was MVP at age twenty two. Now that again, this is an unfair kind of a high bar. He was also MVP at age twenty eight. Those are prime years for him. So if I said, Jake Rogers, you'd love the prime years to be twenty five to thirty, I think that's fair talking about a seven year window twenty five, twenty six, twenty seven,
twenty eight, twenty nine, thirty six year window. Sorry, it's not there. He's twenty nine, he's bet in two o five, he's got a name base percentage of two sixty, he's got a slug of three forty. Come on, seriously, what are we doing here? Everyone talks about, Oh, I've come to conclusion about this young player, Parker Meadows or Spencer Torkelsen. Right, this is what we get. You know, Parker Meadows, Sorry shep don't want him, blah blah blah blah blah. Okay,
Parker Meadows is twenty four. Parker Meadows in his career, has two hundred at bats in the major league level. You're gonna judge him on two hundred at bats. I'm not. I'm not giving up on him. Doesn't mean that I think he should be starting every game, and he should be up here right now. No, I'm just telling you I would not watch
that ship sail yet. I don't know how people can come to such a conclusion so quickly when a he's twenty four b he only has you know, two hundred major League at bats, and one hundred and twenty five of him came last year. Now, he didn't deserve to stay up here because he was batting under one hundred. But that doesn't mean he doesn't deserve to come back up here. When ready? Have you ask yourself this? Have you seen enough of a kiel Bado. He's twenty five, but he's got a
thousand or close to one thousand major League at bats. I've told you this before. People who are smarter than me about baseball have said, you probably need somewhere in the neighborhood of fifteen hundred. When we Ginly loans on with our show a couple of weeks ago, I asked him that and he said, fifteen hundred sounds about right. Remember that, Okay, Well, Akil Badou is getting close to that. He might get that this year, probably
not. He won't get five hundred bets but he'll probably get something close to that. Then maybe you can make the judgment. Maybe you could turn that around and say, well, if you believe in that chep, there's no way you believe Jake Rogers is who he is. You don't believe in that because it's not fifteen hundred at bats, it's only seven hundred. He's twenty nine, dangerously close. He's four years older than a guy like keekil ba Do. And I've seen enough of aekil Bado, quite honestly, I have.
I've had I've seen the swing and miss, I've seen the lack of adjustment. I am done. This team is not young. This team is not good. There's a big difference. You can excuse it if they're young, but they've got too much experience on this team to be this bad. It's flawed. It's as simple as that. The CDs Sports every week comes out with a power rankings for Baseball. Why, I don't know. I mean they've got to fill time or space I should say on their website. I mean they've got all these different sports that people are writing about, so you've got to give them something. And it gives us
something to talk about, quite honestly, so I actually appreciate it. But you know, teams are going to have some bad days, some bad series, maybe a bad week. You know, New York was flying high and then they they ran into some rough times. The Dodgers have run into some rough times. So it's abound to happen. The really good teams bounce back and become a lot more consistent, as consistent as you can in baseball.
It's so damn difficult over such a long stretch. So for a team, for example, like the Yankees to be, you know, fifty two and twenty eight, to have a winning percentage of sixty five percent, that's super impressive. Baltimore a winning percentage of sixty three percent, more home wins than anybody else in the division, Really impressive for Cleveland. I don't know if people realize this. If I said to you, who has the most home wins in the American League? What would your answer be? Now, maybe
you think I just gave it away when I said Cleveland. It's not Cleveland. It's actually Seattle. But Cleveland is right there. Cleveland's got twenty six home wins, they're twenty four and seventeen on the road, and their run differential is right their rivals, the Yankees. They're a plus one oh five
in the run differential. The Yankees are a plus one oh nine. They're the most impressive team this year, I think, and I suppose a lot of that has to do with the fact that I didn't expect much from them. Boy was I wrong. And I think a lot of people were wrong, and I suppose it could change, but it's been really eye opening, especially a team that think about it. They've got Tanner Biby, Logan Allen, Tristan McKenzie, and Carlos Carrasco as their starters. And who's the other
one? Ben Lively? Right? Okay, yeah Lively? Because I think Lively's got seven wins? I think he's does he lead their team? Logan Allen might lead their team in wins? But that's how many people? Honestly, how many? How many of those guys are All Stars? Forget the voting of the All Stars? How many if you were a major league player and you had the vote. Tanner Bibe's six and two, Logan Allen is eight and three, Ben Lively seven and three? Any of them going to
the We scream about how great Terrek Schouble is, and he is? What about Tanner Bybee? What about Logan Allen? No, because Logan Allen's got an ERA of over five, but he gets run support, doesn't he? Unlike many Tigers pitchers Jose Ramirez, It's been a decent bounce back year for Andre Semenez. Right, Josh Naylor's been big for them twenty bombs. They got forty home runs between Ramirez and Freeman or Ramirez and Naylor. Forty homers
between those two guys. Twenty homers for Ramirez, twenty homers for Naylor. Life is pretty good in Cleveland. Right. Who leads the Tigers in home runs? Any idea? What comes to mind? Riley Green? Yeah, Riley Green leads him in home runs with fifteen. Nobody else has double digits. Think about that. Naylor and Ramirez have twenty homers each. Riley Green's got fifteen. Next closest is Matt Vierling with nine. Carry Carpenter who's missed
what twenty games? Twenty two games, twenty seven games due to injury? Carry Carpenter has eight. I told you this before the season began. I said this team lacks middle of the order power. It continues to be an issue. It was never addressed. They didn't address it. They thought playing with versatile players, guys who can give us flexibility, would be good enough. They were wrong, overplayed their hand. I do not care. I'm gonna say this almost every day. You can turn down the radio, you
can change the station if you want. You can shake your head, you can roll your eyes, you can call in or text in and say I'm tired of hearing it. I don't care. I'm going to continue to say it. You need every day players to win. You also need versatile players as part of your roster to win, but not as many as Detroit has. You're never gonna convince me otherwise. Show me the last world champion who's
gotten the crown with all role players rules probably unfair versatile players. Or are they playing with guys who every day for the most part, one hundred and fifty five games of the one to sixty two, that manager is going at third base, This is my guy at shortstop, This is my guy at second base, this is my guy. You're going to rotate an outfielder or two, you'll rotate a catcher because of the workload, and maybe you'll give
a guy in the infield the day off once in a while. But the really good teams, the world champion chip teams are using every day players, and the teams to try and gloss over that and try to use a different formula are just doing it out of desperation because they don't have every day players. And that's part of the problem with the Tigers. Have you looked at the minor league system. Can you tell me the next really good shortstop that
the Tigers will have? You know why you can't? You can't because they don't have one. Yeah, they don't have one. That's the problem. When when you sit there and you go, okay, I really think the Tigers are going to be good this time or at this stage whatever, this year, I ask you. I oftentimes ask people, can you can you give me a reason why? Just asking for a reason why, it's fair, right, I think it's it's fair to to request that, Okay, and they feel like, well, I mean, we've got some good young
hitters coming up. Okay, I'll buy that. How about the uh, how about the players in general? I mean, how about the how about the everyday players? You got them? You got them coming up? No? Why not? Oh? Because they're not there. Because there are certain positions, there are certain key positions you gotta have, and the Tigers don't have them in their system. That's the unfortunate part. I wish they did, I really do, But they don't have them. They're trying to create
them. And that doesn't mean you can't acquire them. By the way, you can go out there and get a shortstop and pay a lot of money for it. You can go out there and get one. That's great, and I encourage you to do that. The problem is you'll have to do that because you don't have one. I've heard people say, well, Kevin McGonagall, I mean he's the kid out of high school who last year was a first round pick thirty seventh overall. I believe Max Clark third overall,
and then mcgonagal I thought he was more of a second baseman. He was a shortstop in high school. All the best players are playing shortstop in high school. We're up against it. Quick time out. So I love that track, it doesn't always love me. And the guys who will go out there and play, I mean Ricky following company, and they got a good field this year. They tear it up. I mean
they're throwing darts left and right. It's like the Travelers last weekend. I mean, what a cot. What a contrast, huh, the contrast from the US Open where the scoring was really difficult. The winner finishes at six hundred par and then the next week a lot of those same guys are playing the Travelers and the winning score is twenty two under. I do have a question for you, and then we're going to get to some texts and you can text us at sports Radar twenty one thousand. You can call the Meyer
hotline eight eight three, eight forty eight forty three. I'm trying to make it a conscious effort not to talk Tigers all the time. I welcome your comments. I love the interaction with you. I do, but I think sometimes it's it's borderline low hanging fruit, and it's it's one big punching bag.
And I've always been a guy, and I've been criticized for this, and that's fine, but I've been criticized for being more of understanding, not an apologist, but understanding of what players and managers and coaches have to go through. I've been very fortunate in my career to be around them for a lot game day practices, film rooms, really fortunate to be able to kind of tap into their expertise and try to understand what it takes to be successful
and win and be consistent. And I know it's not always easy. I am tired, and I'm sure you are too. I am tired of another baseball season going by in a sport that I love and a franchise that I love historically. Don't love the people run in right now, but historically the franchise that I love run by people who look I can't expect everybody to be from Detroit, but I don't think that. I don't think they appreciate what you and I appreciate about the team or the franchise. I've felt that way
for a long time, quite honestly. I mean, this is this is who we grew up rooting for, This is who we love like with our hearts. Love them, But I'm tired of waiting for them to be really good, because they should be. I'm tired of looking at a payroll of one hundred and six million dollars and it's in the lower half of the major leagues and it's wrong. I'm tired of them making wrong draft picks, tired of them not being able to develop good everyday players. I'm tired of hearing
about let's win today's game. And I know you have to feel that way, you know, if you're the if you're the manager, if you're a jhnch, you have to stay that course. But it does get really old because you're not winning today's game, and because you're doing things that prevent you from winning today's game. So I mean, there are people who are buddy of mine called me last night and He's like, hey, what's going on
with the hitting? Coaches? Like, look, I get it, how about the players, man, I know you can't change all the players, but for God's sakes, can you collect more than seven hits? Did you see the run? I mean you know they're scoring. They score double digits, then they score one and two and one and zero and one and zero, and then they score double digits, and then they score one and two. I mean, it's it's ridiculous. They are not a very good,
fundamentally sound team. I don't think you and I can't accept the losing if they're fundamentally sound, but at least there's something on which you can build. You don't see that right now, do you? I know, neither do I mentally or physically. And that's why I started the program. What did I say? I said, these are the games, or these are the moments the triple play, These are the moments that reinforce your belief when you're
hanging out Friday Saturday night with your buddies, whatever it may be. I don't know if it's a yukre game, I don't know, if it's a bar night, I don't know if it's people come over to your house for a barbecue. I don't know if you're going out for dinner and then coming back to your house for drinks whatever, when you're talking to them and you're going you know, I just don't see it with this team. I don't think they're fundamentally sound. I don't think they're as engaged as they need to
be. You can go on and on and on about stuff, but you know what, last night's game is a perfect example of all the things you thought. If you said they're not engaged, they're not fundamentally sound. Boom. There's the McKinstry example. If you say they haven't been very good at draft picks. Boom. There's the Casey Meies example. If you say they lack power, Boom. Watch Philadelphia hit the ball, watch their approach compared
to Detroit's. Those are the things you're complaining about. Those are the things that frustrate you, and for good reason. You're right. Doesn't make it easy to bounce back. But there's something about this team that isn't right. It's the brave heartline. It wasn't right in the head, they're not right. Let me get to a text you can text us at sports radio to twenty one thousand. Ben What do we got, Yeah, says any News. If aj Hinch gave McKinstry third in the lineup today for the base running
air last night, maybe he will reward him with lead off. Well that is that's somebody who is not very fond of aj Hinch, would be my guess. I know that's kind of a little bit of a smart ass. Look, McKinstry, what did he bet eighth last night? I think the eight and nine hitters are the only ones who had multi hit games. Mckinstrey had two hits. Kelly had two hits. I'm not making excuses for him. You got to play somebody at shortstop, all right. McKinstry is probably
going to get that more oftentimes than not. By the way, he tried had another air last night. So when you talk about fundamentally sound, and it was mc history who had the air, So it's a mental error, and it's a you know, you're not First of all, he's not batting third against Ranger Suarez. It's Suarez against School tonight. And this is one of those ones because tomorrow is gonna be a TVD for both. Jack Flaherty was originally supposed to start, but Hinch is gonna give himn extra day off.
You're gonna look at this and you're gonna go you know what I mean. First of all, mckinstry' is not batting there, not against Suarez, all right, who might be well Tyler Glass. Now those two guys to the front runners, probably for the National League Cy Young. That talk has cooled off a little bit for for Terrek Scoobel, who's had a couple of bumps in the road. We'll see how he does against Philly, who is one of the better teams in terms of wins and runs created. I guess
lefties in all of baseball. I think Philly's like fourth or fifth in that category. Detroit is one of the worst, one of the worst against lefties in that regard. So let's see how that plays out. I think that's a that's a smart Alec shot at a J. Hinch, but maybe it's fair. Oh you're gonna reward him? Answer me this, And I'm not saying you don't have any right to be skeptical, because you do one hundred percent. If a guy makes that mistake, he makes an error, and
he makes the mental error, what do you do with him. If you see that consistently, you know, damn one of what you're gonna do, you're gonna he's out right, But what about if he does it just in a situation like that, you need him? Like it or not, you need him. You probably don't like it, all right, So you don't like it. You don't like the Chippewa who's gonna play short stuff for you? You know they talk about versatility with this team all the time. This
is what we get, right. How many guys can play short stuff McKinstry and that's it cold Keith. You're not playing cold Keith is short. You're not playing Gee Orchelle at short. Okay, you're not playing Mark Cannet short. It's McKinstry or Chridler bias when he's healthy, which is a different story. So what do you do? You're pissed off, and you should be. I'm pissed off. I don't like the fielding errors. I don't like the mental errors. I think it's ridiculous. What are you gonna do.
They're not rewarding him. You think it's a reward because he's in the lineup. No has to be in the lineup. He has to be, because you don't have anybody else. Once you got three errors at short in like twenty four starts, it's not a good ratio. Man got to be better than that. Now Philly has got to take advantage of it. They're winning that game no matter what. They're kicking a crap out of you. Okay, you had two extra base hits when they have seven hits overall. I
believe Philly's got fifteen hits on the night. You get a bomb double, two doubles by Harper, a Turner double, homer by bomb, homer by Harper, almost as many extra base hits for Philly six. Then Detroit had hits seven, And the apologists will say, well, look, I mean Philly is one of the better teams in baseball. Yeah, so what you're the ones telling us and preaching to us, Hey, anything can happen in
baseball, pitching, in defense. In baseball, you don't have the pitching, didn't have the defense, haven't had the defense really all year, save for the game against Chicago. On the very first play, very first batter of the day, Tommy fam ground ball to third, or Sella makes a hell of a play, throws him out, from foul territory. It's a hell of a play, A diving catch by Riley Green here or there,
a home run, robbing grab of Matt Vierling. Not many defensive standout plays, and we both know that they're not fast based runners and their lack of power is evident. It really makes you question how you're gonna win. If your owner is tightening the purse strings. It hard to deny that. You want to argue that. Give me the Give me the example that says he's willing to spend besides the Bayez contract. Give me the example. You can't I us to have a lower payroll this year than last, So not willing
to spend, so tightening the purse strings? How you gonna win? Drafting and developing? You don't have a short stop. You have a bunch of second basemen who aren't very good defensively. Young's not very good defensively, Keith isn't very good defensively. What are you gonna do? You got nobody at third base right You got a hell of a defensive center fielder in your system, but you can't hint right Field's a huge question mark. First basis a
question mark. I don't want to paint a bleak picture. It's something you probably already know. But that's the state of your team. That's the state of your franchise. Max Clark is not coming up anytime soon, all right, mcgonagall's not coming up anytime soon. If you think either are the answer. That's why I was the fuddled about the passing on why at Langford? I thought, right, the green and center Langford and left question mark and
right. I suppose he's done pretty well for Texas. He's not gonna be Rookie of the Year, but he's done pretty well for Texas. He's a pretty fast riser in that system. Meanwhile, I I had mentioned CBS does this weekly rankings. Phillies are number one. Where do you think the Tigers rank? It's just one website's opinion. What do you think they rank? They ranked twenty fifth. Here's what they write. Brace yourself serves some hilarious,
maddening inconsistency. Here are the number of runs the Tigers have scored per game in their last nine games. This is what I was referring to a moment ago. Zero thirteen one one one zero two one eleven one two double digits. How many ones one, two, three, four five with last Night and Twoice they were shut out. That's tough to make up. That's horrific stuff. That's what we're staring at. The only team's worse and it's just one website's rankings. But I bet you if I asked you for your
rankings, you'd be pretty damn close to this. Only the Angels, A's, Marlin's Rockies and White Sox they have is worse brutal. When we come back, Jason Langwell, the executive producer of the Rocket Mortgage Classic that is
taking place this week, really excited for that. Got a really good looking field led by Ricky Fowler who won it a year ago, really good looking field, on the great anticipation of this year's event, how it's different, and how you were able to secure such a good field, because I think
it's important. They've got big names coming this year and perhaps, just perhaps this is starting to turn the corner a little bit for this annual event that is great for Detroit and really becoming a lot more embraced by the Gulf world. It's good stuff. Jason Langmoll will join us when we come back to talk about the Rocket Mortgage Classic. In downtown Detroit that tease up on Thursday on exis and bro stay with us. Welcome to Meyer.
