Get some facts and come back and Seebee. Get some facts and come back and Seebee. Don't fill out salaries or other things. Get some facts and come back and Seebee. You can't handle the true I told our players you need a bit more like a dog. We don't need a bunch of cats in here looking in the mirror. But I look good. I got my extra bands on, I got my other shoes. Be a doll. We don't need no mouns. We don't need no cats. We need more dolls. Why you're not a detain Oh you're not. At the time, we

weren't good. There's no sense of asking me things about the game. I'm telling you we laid an egg. So I'm not gonna break it down for you. He sucks. He sucked. He laid an egg. That's all I have to say. Guys, I'm sorry. I'm not gonna break it down for you. Nothing went well for us. It's on us. We have to figure it out everyway. Eight, All right, third hour Here on Axes and Bros. On a Tuesday. Welcome. I'm Matt Shepard. Trent Vally is our producer. We are on throughout the Great State of Michigan

on Exes and Bros. Monday through Friday, six until nine. The Meyer hotline eighty six six eight three eight forty eight forty three and the text line is sports rated to twenty one thousand. Love the stuff that we've talked about

already here this morning. In case you missed a Tigers win in a shutout one nothing over Cleveland yesterday, Kider Montero was really good six and a third of just three hit, one walk, four strikeout ball to try now two and two against Cleveland this year twenty or making fourteen and twelve within the division. Ken Keegan Bradley named US Ryder Cup captain at age thirty eight, the

youngest since Arnold Palmer was a player captain back in nineteen sixty three. Here's our poll question for you, and we've got it on various forms of social media. You can follow us on Twitter xb mornings and you can go to our Facebook page x'es and Bros. The pole question is what's the best golf event to watch any of the four majors, the Ryder Cup or the President's Cup? Now yesterday you can vote us off in Asia like by the way,

yesterday, what our pole question was was the most underrated line? Was it Jamiir Gibbs, Frank Ragnow, Jared Goff, Eric Anzeloni or other? What are the final results they're trent of our poll question from Monday. Almost half of you who voted forty five percent say Frank Ragnow, and I guess we can kind of leave it at that. Nineteen percent said Jared Goff, twenty three say Alex Angeloni, and thirteen percent of you say other. I

think that's pretty fair. What do you think forty five percent for Frank Ragnow? Yeah, you and I said this the other day. Think we think he's kind of the underrated player. He's the guy that you and I feel probably doesn't get enough recognition and deserves more. So. I think that's a pretty good barometer right there. Anyway, glad that you were able to vote, vote as often as you want, any time you want, and we'll

give the results of our poll question around this time tomorrow. Speaking of football and Frank Ragnow and perhaps guys who are maybe a little underrated and deserve a little bit more credit, I was reading in the Sporting News yesterday the younger stars or the players who deserve more credit for being a clutch player, Jalen Hurts of the Eagles was named one of the most clutch quarterbacks in the NFL. This guy's been around just a few years, but has already garnered that

type of ability. CJ. Stroud, Patrick Mahomes also were on a list that included the best most clutch players in the NFL, which I found pretty interesting. Not saying it's wrong. I just found it interesting. What determines

clutch? Is it about comebacks? Is it about salting victories away? When you talk about clutch performers clutch, Let's use quarterbacks in this case because in the article they write, Hurts has shown the ability to step up to the moment on multiple occasions for the Eagles, most notably his Super Bowl performance against the Chiefs, a comeback effort that was ultimately upended by Mahomes. Heading into this year, Hurts and the Eagles will look to return to that high point

and finish the job well. Again. It goes back to what I've said before, and what I've said is just because you get there one year and people think, Wow, I'm really hungry for next year, doesn't mean you're going to get there. This is all reference to the top ten clutch quarterbacks. According to the website, who do you think is the number one clutch quarterback? Well, it's Patrick Mahomes. Of course, they list CJ. Stroud at number two, and this is what they write. Nobody was better

in the clutch than Stroud. Last year, the Texans converted on six of eight game tying or go ahead drive chances late with Stroud under center his numbers in those situations a phenomenal seventy seven percent completion rate. Hurtz was third six total touchdowns, zero turnovers on potential game tying or go ahead drives in the fourth quarter, number four with Josh Allen, which I found interesting because after I read what they said about Hertz, I thought Allen's the guy viewed by

most as a turnover machine. The website rights Allans top ten in every criteria mentioned off the top, including fifth and clutch drive conversion rate. In both twenty twenty three and for his career, he led three game winning drives as the Bills finished last season on a five game win streak. Number five is your Jared Goff, they write, Jared Goff has more clutch moments in twenty twenty three than you probably remember. He ranked third in game tying go ahead

drive conversion rate in the fourth quarter. Let me read that again, third in game tying go ahead drive conversion rate in the fourth quarter and overtime. Last year, he led a game winning drive on opening night in Kansas City, outlast to Justin Herbert and the Chargers in a track meet, and he led a twelve point comeback against the Bears in the final five minutes, and

had a game winning drive in the playoffs against the Buccaneers. You know, Chef, when you brought this up, I thought of that track meet you mentioned against LA when I think it was fourth and two at the end, Lions are trying to ice it with a first down to win the game, and he throws a perfect pass over the middle, and I forget if it was Brock writer Sam Laporta, but that's instantly where my head went when you said clutch, Jared Goff, Here's where my head goes. And I would

prefer to focus on the positive. I mean, they win the division, they get twelve wins, they reached the NFC Championship game. He is a major part of it. Didn't get enough credit, I think during the season, except from Detroit players who kept saying Jared Goff and then fans obviously latched onto that Detroit blew Is seventeen point. It was a seventeen point halftime lead right against San Francisco. Yeah, in the NFC Championship game. Yep.

Do you remember Jared Goffer that or do you remember him for all the positive things that he did. I'm a glass half fall guy, but I don't blame people if they want to look at the collapse. Yeah, because we always want more, right, That's fair. That's what I mean. That's what fandom is. I mean, you're always you're always wanting more. And for Lions fans who never tasted that once they finally got a taste of that last season, I can understand why you'd maybe get a little greedy, especially

this year. I choose to do what you do. I choose to be positive. I'm I give him a massive amount of credit. He was better than I thought he would be, and I think he's better than what Lions fans thought he would be. And by the way, he's not the only one who led the team on the game winning drive against Tampa. Because his offensive line had to do work. The wide receivers had to do work everybody did right, and he's sure as hell isn't the primary reason or the only

reason why they blew a seventeen point halftime lead. But he's ranked number five in clutch. Dak Prescott six, Joe Burrows seven, Daniel Jones of the Giants aides, Lamar Jackson nine, and Justin Herbert ten. Who in their right mind would have thought that Daniel Jones would have been ranked ahead of the reigning MVP H Not me? I guess I also look at clutch in fourth quarter comebacks. So, for example, who's the all time leader in fourth

quarter comebacks? I'm Brady forty six? Second, is Peyton Manning forty three? That there isn't he? Then Ben Roethlisberger three, Matt Ryan fo, Drew Brees five, and Matthew Stafford six, one behind Drew Brees. That's clutch, and yet he was never viewed that way in Detroit Quick time Out than back with more after this on Exes and Bros. Deal with us. Bill Simonson here from my good friend Josh Garvey. I don't know if that's the final thing. I used to debate people all the time when it comes to the NFL and quarterbacks, and I would bring up, look at how many comeback wins this guy may have and people would say, well, that means his team trailed in the first place. Well, of course, I mean, how many teams are leading wire to wire it just doesn't happen. Well, how many Super Bowl comebacks have we seen? Yeah? Right, and plenty. And it's not always the quarterback either.

I mean certain guys make certain big plays. Neil O'Donnell through two picks, Joe Burrow is considered and would you consider him a top five quarterback in the NFL? Yeah, I would agree with that. He has as many comeback wins in his career so far as Quincy Carter did, as Gary Danielson did, as Ty Detmer did, as Pat Hayden did five. I'm not going to read too much into that. I know this. He's above five hundred in his career twenty nine, twenty two and one. I know he's

highly productive. Look at his touchdown passes, look at his completion percentage, look at the yards he's thrown for when as you said, healthy last year just ten games, but the previous two years he started every game, and he's a difference maker. He was the Player of the Year in twenty twenty one, he was fourth in the MVP in twenty twenty two, and a pro bowler. What's interesting is the you know, as Player of the Year in twenty twenty one, he wasn't a pro bowler. But anyway, he's

a guy I would like to have under center. I have no problem with that. But the injuries, and there's been plenty for him, the injuries for him have almost taken center stage. It's almost as if people remember him more for the injury plague seasons than they have for his highly decorated and productive seasons. He was on a podcast recently and this is what he had to say about twenty twenty three. Do you think people have forgotten about Joe Burrow.

I believe that. Yeah, that's what happens when you get hurt. Though you don't play football, people forget about you. Yeah, which I kind of I like the spot you're in right now because I feel like I love the spot on Yeah. Everyone's like, oh, well, you know, you know Josh La mar and Patrick CJ. Stroud's like, you're forgetting one guy. Yeah. I agree. Yeah, but again that's part of the game. You don't if you're not out there and people aren't watching it,

then there's nothing to talk about. Yeah, So I'm gonna get people to talk about something to talk about this year. See. I love the moxie, I love the confidence, and I love the fact that he is ready to go out and improve something to people. That's what I want in a leader. Now, he was labeled Joe Cool. I don't know if you're too young to remember this, but the original Joe Cool, well maybe it was Joe Namath, but I viewed the original Joe Cool as Joe Montana.

It's just a I think before Tom Brady, Joe Montana is a great quarterback voltame. Some people could still make that argument. Those are more people in San Francisco. It's hard to do that, but it's up for debate. I'm sure Patrick Mahomes is making a strong case for in many people's eyes right now. The bottom line is Joe Burrow is clutch. We just went

over the clutch performances. Conversion rates, game time, go ahead drive chances forty percent across the board, regular season career, playoff career twenty twenty twenty three, top eleven among current starters in all three major categories. Like that, and it's not perfect, you know. We know that they failed to score on their last five drives against the Rams in the Super Bowl and failed against the Chiefs in twenty twenty two in the AFC Championship Game. But he's

a guy you want under center, right Absolutely. The question is can a quarterback play with that type of chip on his shoulder? So when I think of that, when I heard that, when I first heard that from Joe Burrow, he's out to prove a point. Why do I always why do I think of this and associate proving a point with physicality more than anything else. In other words, if a guy's going to make a point, it's going to be more of a running back, it's going to be a defensive

player, quarterbacking. You can have the chip on your shoulder all you want. Tom Brady always talked about playing with a chip on his shoulder. Drew Brees talked about playing with a chip on his shoulder. You can have that all you want. You still have to be precise, You still have to make the right reads. You still have to make sure you're throwing to the right guy and that it's on target. You have to make sure you're doing

so many other things. Then playing with the physicality that it would require for somebody who plays a different position and has that proverbial chip on their shoulder. Yeah, Like, how many second string quarterbacks come in young bucks, they get their shot and they have the chip on their shoulder, right, And I mean there's some examples of it happen, happening and working out, but most cases, you know, those guys have a chip on their shoulder and

they still don't play well. Right. I mean, look, if it's about that, and I take Joe Burrow for his word, I think that's exactly what it is for him, and I give him a ton of credit. Think of the number of quarterbacks going into this season who should have the proverbial chip on their shoulder. There should be a ton Yeah, Dak Prescott playing for a contract and people in Dallas feel like he can't get it done. Josh Allen, who can't get to that big game. Same with market

because they can't seem to get by Kansas City. Right, Brock Purdy, you talk about anybody who should be playing with a chip on his shoulder. He's mister irrelevant. Everybody thinks San Francisco wins despite him. Baker Mayfield not wanted in numerous other spots in his career, Cleveland, Carolina, whatever. How about Kirk Cousins. Atlanta goes out and pays them and then they draft a quarterback in the top ten? Excellent example, Perfect example. You said

Lamar Jackson. Yeah, highly paid, highly decorated, two time league MVP, but there are whispers, no doubt in Baltimore on whether or not he can truly use his style of game to get his team to a super I'm not going to bring up guys like Gardner Minshew or Gino Smith and stuff like that. There's no reason for that. But don't tell me that Bryce Young isn't playing with a chip on his shoulder, or that Russell Wilson slash Justin

Fields won't be taking the field with a chip on their shoulders. You brought up the perfect example. There's no doubt Kirk Cousins is going to be playing with a chip on his shoulder. He probably has since he was first drafted by Washington. While Robert Griffin third was getting all the love, Kirk Cousins

was trying to make a name for himself. And the last player might be and a guy who most people believe can't would be a guy like Zach Wilson, perhaps getting his final chance even though he's still a young player in Denver. A happy belated birthday to one Jack Lambert out

of Kent State. Remember he's a Mac guy and one of the greatest linebackers of his generation. Is he one of the greatest linebackers of all time? I would say yes, and he was probably outside of Dick Butkiss trying to think here. Outside of I would say Jack Lambert's probably the most intimidating linebacker you've ever seen. Doesn't mean he's the best, Like I think, Lawrence

Taylor is arguably the greatest football player I've ever seen. People have brought up Jerry Rice in the past, Joe Montana, Tom Brady, Lawrence Taylor was an absolute wrecking machine. That's always my answer when people ask me who I wish I could have seen. You know, I'm only twenty four years old. I didn't grow up watching that era. But Lawrence Taylor is always my answer for that unbelievable And I'm sure, knowing the type of sports geek that

you are, you've watched highlights of him. I'm not sure they always do him justice. He was just amazing. Go back and watch Jack Lambert a little bit. Lambert. You know, he looked like a hockey player because he was missing his two front teeth. He was constantly gyro raiding, you know, kind of anticipating the snap. Quarterback had to look at him every single time they played that four to three defense. He was an absolute badass and he wanted to punish you. He wanted to hurt whoever he tackled.

There was no let up for him. He was the second coming of Dick Butkus. Look at Dick Butkus when he played with the Bears. Look at Jack Lambert when he played with the Steelers. There's a guy by the name of Mike Curtis who played for the Baltimore Colts way back in the day. He was a tough SOB two didn't get the pub don't think they were like that of a Butkus or a Lambert, but I wanted to I know that

was out on social media. He was such a I don't know if he was as good as Jack Ham quite honestly, and Jack Camp played, but he was just super intimidating, super mean and super tough. There was a great quote from Lynn Swan, who was the first round pick by the Steelers. I forget which draft. It was seventy three or seventy four. I think it was seventy four. Lambert was drafted in the second round, I believe, of that same draft. Okay, so it was Lynn Swan from

USC and it was Jack Lambert from Kent State. And you know, not many people not Look, let's face it, not many people, especially back then, knew of Kent State football. I mean it's not like it was a it was a huge deal. So Lambert was drafted in the second It was the seventy four draft. Okay, yeah, seventy four draft, and

Linn Swans was standing there. I think it was at a practice. He told the story and he said Jack Lambert said hey, Swan, and so lind Swan was kind of excited, and I actually thought, you know what, Jack's gonna want to talk to me. Cool. So lind Sa Swan was drafted twenty first overall and Lambert all he said to him was like, I should have been first, you should have been second. No, there's I should have been the first round pick and you should have been the second

round pick. Either way. The Pittsburgh Steelers that year got a Hall of famer in the first round and they got a Hall of famer in the second round. That's not bad, not at all. That's good. That's called good scouting, don't you think. Yeah, good drafting development too. Yeah, something we were we were talking about yesterday. That's how you win, man, That's how you win titles. It's that some people may call it

luck. That's how when you go about your business. Oh and by the way, just so you know, in the fourth or out of that same draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers got another Hall of famer. You know who it was, John Stalwarth Not bad. They drafted two Hall of Fame wide receivers in the same draft, and John Stalworth, i believe is now in their front office. You'll take it right. Of course, Detroit took Dexter Bussy before John Stalworth and and Dexter Bussy was fine. I mean he had a

productive year or productive career. I should say it wasn't as long, and it sure wasn't as productive, but he was fine. All right. Off that I could talk about old football players forever. We had just mentioned them,

We'll move on. But we had mentioned about Joe Burrow and how he's playing with the chip on his shoulder because he was injured last year and he feels like he being overlooked while people are talking about c. J. Stroud and continue to praise Patrick Mahomes and and other quarter of and Lamar Jackson wins the MVP and other quarterbacks, Joe Burrow feels like he's going to be, you know, almost forgotten. He's gonna he's gonna show people this year.

He also during the podcast that he was on, he also brought up a solution to what is eventually going to be. I mean this is there's no doubt, right, I mean, there's no doubt in your mind that the NFL is going to an eighteen game schedule, right. It seems inevitable. Yes, it's inevitable. We know they want to do it. It's been reported for years. Exactly He's got a he's got a plan for it, he's got an idea of how it should best be implemented. And when you

look back, when you I should say, when you look forward. When people tweet about this, their response is an overwhelming thumbs up from the fan base. Trent, why don't you read what his idea is to implement an eighteen game schedule for the NFL. So, first of all, Joe Burrow thinks if there's eighteen games, there needs to be two bye weeks, which I think we would all pretty much agree with. One of those bye weeks. One of those by weeks should come around week thirteen for the entire league.

Okay, so you have the other one sprinkled throughout Week thirteen, fourteen twelve. Somewhere in the middle there the entire league is off, you put the Pro Bowl games the festivities occurring on that week, similar to how the NBA does their All Star weekend and the MLB with their All Star weekend coming

up. Not only would this boost ratings for the struggling Pro Bowl, but by adding a second bye week and an extra game, the Super Bowl would then fall on the day before President's Day, giving most people the day off after the biggest game of the year. I think it's genius. I think it's logic. Here's my question that I didn't get answered. Is there a

Pro Bowl game? Because he's said festivities. Yeah, I think he's alluding to they'd stick with this Pro Bowl games thing they've been doing for the last two years, with the catch contest and the dodgeball right, which to me is an absolute farce. Oh, it's terrible. I think it's awful. That's not even the debate. I don't even think he believes it's a good Pro Bowl festivity with dodgeball and all that other crap. No, if guys and I look, I think it's a better alternative than what they have now.

And I don't even know if there's a perfect solution to this. Here's my question, though, to you and to him and anybody else who supports this, what makes us think that a player who is voted to the Pro Bowl, and it's not like it's an honor like it used to be, what makes us think they would want to use their second bye week to participate in these festivities. If the bye week is so valuable to you for your body and your mind to heal, why do you want to go someplace and

participate in dodgeball and the other Pro Bowl festivities. I'm with you there. I think that's the biggest plot hole here, because I think the only reason that some of these players do end up going is because it's at the end of the season and it's just a chance to unwind and have some fun. How do you fix I don't even know if it's fixable, but how do you fix the Pro Bowl? We all know it's the only all star game, for lack of a better phrase, it's the only all star game that

takes place after the regular season ends. But we also know that football is arguably the most demanding. Look, all sports are demanding. Baseball is super demanding from a physical but a mental standpoint as much as anything else. Basketball and hockey same thing. Football beats you up. Ask any player, especially later in the season. They're not healthy again until probably Thursday. Now here's how a football schedule works. You play Sunday Monday, depending on the coach.

Some coaches give you the day off, you know, if you're going really well. I forget which team it was. I was watching the documentary on America's Game. The coach was giving them the Monday off. They called it hat day because they gave them the day off as long as you kept winning. Yeah, a lot of them do the victory Monday thing. Right, you win on Sunday, you get Monday off, right incentive. Tuesday

is an automatic day off, that's in the NFLPA agreement. So Wednesday, you come back, you're watching film, you do the walkthroughs, you begin your prep. You should be prepping on your own, but you begin your team prep for the next week's opponent. Thursdays of physical Day, Fridays of physical Day. Saturday is primarily a walkthrough, okay, or they may go without pads. It's not necessarily hitting them the like. So if that's the

case, you know you're getting three three strong days of practice. So it shows you how physical and how demanding it can really be. And and think about that, by the end of the end of the year, how much, how many hits you've taken, how much you've had to flush in and out of your brain about your next opponent, all those things. So I get why it's at the end of the season. I'm just not sure. I don't know if you can fix it. I don't know if you can

fix the Pro Bowl. I think you're gonna get guys to play in it, and that's fine. They've gone to the flag football format. I suppose that's fine too. I've always been a big proponent of what they used to do with the Superstar. Now you're too young to remember this, but they used to have a Battle of the Network stars. They used to have a Battle of the Stars. They would have sprinting events. Herschel Walker against whatever, Darryl Green, Okay, and see how fast guys can get, how

strong they may be in different competitions. You can have different competitions for these guys that don't necessarily require a ton of torque or a ton of wear and tear on the body. I don't like what they've done with it. I just don't know what the alternative may be to what they're trying to get people interested in. When it comes to football players, what are you most intrigued

about with football players that maybe you don't know? Do you look forward to a quarterback's precision for me, yes, a kicker's strength of leg, yes, how quick a guy may come off the edge. It's almost like another combine. If you had something like that, I think that might interest people a little bit more. We are amazed, For example, at who was it? Remember Larry Allen, he had passed a couple of weeks back, and the video out there was him bench pressing five hundred pounds. Do you

remember that? Yes, Okay, do something like that. Who's the strongest man in football, or at least who's been voted to the Pro Bowl? Bring guys on, who can squat the most, who can bench the most, who's got the most accurate throwing, who's got the strongest leg, who's the fastest wide receiver? So, chef, correct me if I'm wrong here. You don't really have a problem with it being festivities. You just want

the festivities tweaked so they're actually interesting. That's correct, not dodgeball. Correct. I don't think dodgeball. I mean I think it's kind of a joke. Well, because let's I mean, this is probably goes without saying. But I think we all agree they're never going to play a football game ever. Again, No, no, they're not around it. No I can't either. I think that's the right call. But right, so, what

are the things that you really want to see? Look, I've said this at nauseum about Baseball with the All Star I think the I think the Home Run derby's a farce. I think it's an absolute joke. I think it's

one big, made up event and it takes too long. It's a television event, is what it is. And what you could do to showcase your sport and it's athletes better is in addition to the All Star Home Run Derby, which is fine if they chopped it down a little bit, the number of swings and the number of outs you get, it's just it's I think it goes on way too long. Maybe I'm maybe I'm old fogeyish here and I think it's ridiculous. Maybe you agree with me or not, but I

just think it's way too much. Well, they also can't decaid on a format they like, but that's a whole different issue. Yeah, what what you could do is you could show most accurate arm from right field or the strongest arm from right field. I mean, who wouldn't have wanted to see each he row not just be at the All Star facilties, but also showcase

what a great gun he has from right field? Or what about like target practice for the catchers, you know, try to throw a guy out at second exactly, or who's the fastest first to third, who's the best This isn't thrilling for a lot of people. But can you bunt to a certain target and you get you know, certain points for doing that? Back control? There are so many different things you could do that I don't think they even explore because they're so wrapped up in the home run derby. We think

everybody is all about power. You would never get pitchers to who throws the hardest, who throws the best curveball, who throws the best slider and things like that. You could make that a possibility. You could approach that with pitchers, but they feel like, you know, we throw enough already, you know what I mean. But you could do certain events that would showcase

different skill sets in the sport that would make it more interesting. I think you can do the same thing in football because I think we're enamored with all that stuff. How big a certain guy is and how strong he is, who's the fastest offensive lineman? Look, you may think, ugh, come on, give me a break. Those guys are faster than you and me a hell of a lot faster. We just can't get over it. We don't see it because they're caught in a certain space and you're not watching that

space more oftentimes than not. You know what else is an interesting piece of this chef is I the players seem to like it. They seem to enjoy themselves. They're messing around, they're taking pictures. But the problem that Joe Burrow's alluding to here is no one watches. So obviously the NFL isn't going to be a fan of that because they're all about what TV revenue exactly. So you got to toll that line. You got to keep the players invested

and keep them having fun, but you also got to get eyeballs. So how do you get people to watch? We think it's all about If we believe that, it's all about the power in other sports hardest shot in hockey, three pointer in NBA, home run derby, and baseball, why wouldn't the NFL capitalize on that and do something like a bench press and a leg press or a squad something that will make you and I go, oh my god, we are enamored with power. Why do you think golf has that

shot tracker? It shows us where it goes, but how far it goes too. We can't get over how far a guy can drive the golf ball, right. It's amazing to us because we just can't do that. We don't play with anybody who does that. Well, guess what, we don't play with anybody who can bench like that either. So I think those are some of the things that football could do. But I do like Joe Burrow's suggestion you get the two bye week. The problem the NFL would have with

that suggestion is everybody gets week thirteen off everybody. You still have to have football in the public eye. His suggestion of that's when the Pro Bowl takes place would exactly do that. It still gives you a chance to talk about the sport. Maybe Joe Burrow should be commissioner. Our thanks to Trent Bally for producing our program today, and thanks to you for listening.
