Where are we at in society today? Come after me. I'm a man, I'm forty. Go ahead, make my dad. Every single week, I put my freaking heart and soul into this. I don't go out there and laugh. It's not funny. Nothing's funny to me. I don't want to go out there and get embarrassed on Monday night football fund of everybody. I think this at the beginning of a beautiful friendship. So I ain't nothing changed from yesterday. Still the same person I was yesterday, and I got

the same thing for you that I had yesterday. You know why I'm here. You play to win the game. You don't play to just play it. That's a great thing about sports. You play to win, and I don't care if you don't have any wins. You go play to win. When you start telling me it doesn't matter if you retire get out for the matters, well you tell me honestly, You tell me how much winning matters to you. Right now? It doesn't feel like it. It really doesn't.

And when you look at the comments from people overall, Look, social media is one thing where we can use as a barometer. But oftentimes the beauty of social media even though I think most people are on it to be angry. But the beauty of it is you get a pulse from the fan

base in whatever sport, at whatever market. If your team's not doing well, you're not going to hear many positive things, and you wouldn't expect to, right, but holy cow, the negativity surrounding the Detroit Tigers is incredible. I'm not saying it's not justified. It is, but it's been incredible. They're going to open up. This is where you get in a real feel for it. All right, how many people are going to follow live

this team? Is? They head West? They open up a season long ten game road trip with a three games slate in LA against the Angels. Jack Flaherty's gonna throw against Davis Daniel, who I have no idea guy with two first names. Detroit loses the series to Philly six to two. Real question, best team in baseball comes to your market. You win one out of three, you're not competitive in the other two. I mean, they beat the hell out of you. In Game one. They hit the blood

out of the ball last night or yesterday with twelve hits. They had seven relievers living you to four hits. That included Matt Vierling's leadoff home run, his career tying high tenth. He's been good for him, But honestly, what did you expect? See? I say this all the time, although I get burned by it too. This is about expectations. I expected nothing less than this or nothing more than this. Really frustrating. You see a team come in and they are so good, so balanced. I love the

way they play. Just a little sample Bryson Stott with a base hit that he turns into a double, where others may have easily said, you know what, I'm just gonna hunker down here at first base. That dude out of the gate busted to second base. Who do you got on this team that does that. I'm not saying everybody should be Bryce and Stott. He's a good player, not a great player, but he's a good player. He doesn't have to be a great player when he's surrounded by guys like Harper

and Schwarber and Turner and Castillanos and marsh Not that they're great players. Harper shure as hell is, but the steadiness of them all right. He trace now lost four of their last five series, So pay attention to this. They are nine and fourteen in June. That's twenty three games, right, Okay, twelve of those games they've scored two runs or less. More than half of the games they have played in the month of June, the offense has been limited to two runs or less. This, I'm sure for you

is getting old, and for me it is really old. But it's factual. This is what I have to bring to you because sometimes, and I can't blame you, sometimes you can't stomach watching it and you shouldn't, which really hurts to say, because I like watching baseball, man. I enjoyed watching Tigers baseball on the field to play. And I did notice something yesterday.

And I'm always hesitanting this because I've been in that chair and I know it's difficult, but during a broadcast, you got to be really careful about talking about fans because it's emotional. Man. This is an emotional highway from me at home to them on the field. As a broadcaster, you are that emotional link and you try to give as much insight as you possibly can because you're around the team every day, and you are with the team every day, and you get a chance to talk with the team every day.

And yesterday there was a little hint in a narrative that had the fan base being a little unreasonable and impatient. Now I'm not sure what unreasonable means for me. It's Matt, why in the world did you think this team was going to win the division? It had as much to do with the team's other teams in the division as it did with Detroit, and I have been surprised and wrong, flat out wrong about the teams ahead of the Tigers. I have been just as wrong, if not worse, about the hometown team.

And that's on me, okay, but it's not all on me. It's on them too. The expectations were real, and the expectations are not out of line. This team is not put together very well, nor was last year's team, or the team before or the team before that. And you can't seem to find somebody who either a puts together a roster that is adept to this ballpark, or b understands the needs of this team and fails to go do that. You don't have to go get home run hitters.

This is why I say in the middle of the order, this team has lacked power. Power doesn't always mean home runs. It helps. It's needed, but it's not essential for everyone you bring in. But you don't have anybody that's nuts, absolutely nuts. Philly's got it. They're the standard right now. Maybe you could say the Yankees, but they lost again yesterday. Mets beat the crap out of them, even though Aaron Judge hit his thirtieth homer of the year. How is it unreasonable for you and I to expect

this team to be more competitive than six games under five hundred? How is it unreasonable for you and I to expect this team to be within closer than fifteen games of first place in this division. We'll get your thoughts on that as we move forward here. I know we want to talk NBA Draft. I get it, and rightfully so we will, and we will do that coming up on Exes and Bros. As we continue on a Thursday morning. After this, Bill Simonson, here from my good friend Josh Garvey. Now

you this, Who's more at fault me or the team? This just came to me during the break, and I should ask Trent and Bennis, our producers, if I expect something of you, in this case the Tigers, if I expected something of you and you don't deliver, and let's face it, they haven't. They haven't delivered anything besides the five and old start. Honestly, Okay, Trek Scoubele fair enough, maybe just maybe Jack Flaherty and he pitches tonight. Here's what I would ask you. Is it my fault

for having such high expectations? Or is it your fault for not complete what was expected? And maybe I'm looking at this wrong. Maybe this isn't on the Tigers. Maybe this is on me and you. How dare we expect more out of them? The other question I have is about the word rebuild. Some people shudder at that, like, oh God, please, don't

don't say that. When does a rebuild begin? Because when you look at this team and you see how long it's been since it's made a playoff run and I mean to run, I mean like a push toward the playoffs. Okay, that's what I mean. I'm not asking you to make the playoffs. I want you to push for one. Last year was not a push for a playoff spot. They finished nine games back. Twenty twenty two, sure as hell wasn't a run for a playoff spot. They finished twenty six

games out of first place in the division. The year before that, they finished eighteen games out in the division. Forget twenty twenty because it's meaningless. Twenty nineteen was one of the worst seasons Tigers baseball has ever experienced. They

were forty seven and one hundred and fourteen. They finished a whopping and I mean a whopping fifty three and a half games back of the one hundred and one win Minnesota Twins in twenty nineteen, twenty seven games out in twenty eighteen, dead last again in twenty seventeen, where they finished thirty eight games out twenty sixteen, perhaps perhaps and yet still finished eight games away. You tell me when I should stop. Oh, I guess I should stop when it

was twenty fourteen, right because they won the division. Because a year later they finished twenty and a half games out, they were last in the division. They went from the penthouse to the outhouse. So it's been since twenty fourteen ten years. You tell me when the rebuild begins and ends. I just went through the god awful numbers. We're not talking any competitive baseball in what it was widely considered the worst division in baseball. I suppose you can

make an argument that it's not. You want to give me the division that's worse, feel free? Is it the NL West that has the Dodgers and back in the day not too long ago, San Francisco who was pretty damn good, or Arizona that went to the World Series a year ago, or San Diego has got some superstars on it. More than one, more than two, more than three, could be the NL Central. Milwaukee's been pretty steady, so hit Saint Louis. It's no other There's no other divisions that

you can make the argument for, maybe maybe the National League Central. Either way, what difference does it make it It isn't about other divisions. It's not about other teams. It's about this team and this division. Do you tell me when the rebuild begins ten years and people are trying to tell me that you've got to give more time because it's a rebuild. Oh, I

see there's somebody new in oh Okay. Why is it that when somebody new comes to town, but the philosophy remains the same from ownership, it's a pass. I guess My point is with what this team is right now, does it look much different than two years ago? Be honest? Does it look much different? I mean, you always tell me he's coaching with other coaches players. So in other words, when Juwan Howard took over the University of Michigan his first year, he takes over with John b Lin's players.

Okay, So when Tiger's management comes in last year actually somewhat competitive despite finishing nine games back second in the division. They were with al of Vila's players, right, I mean comes to reason, Okay, does when do you have the chance to implement your own players? You did last year, you do this year. You take a new job, whatever job you have right now, you move on to a competitor of the company you have. Are you doing things the same way as they did? They hired you to do

what to do it your way? That's what makes you appealing. They want you in there to implement your ideas, your expertise, your way of doing things. That's what the Tigers did with their front office. Bring these guys in, let's have them do it their way. How long do you need? I don't know. I'm not saying I have the answer. I'm just asking you how long do you need? If it was that broken and as sure as hell seemed to be broken, if it was that broken, what

needs to be fixed. I'm not saying you snap your fingers and boom it's done. But in sports you have the opportunity to go out and get free agents. I'm not asking this organization to fast track its young players. It just drafted. That's suicidal, makes no sense. Max Clark isn't ready. JACEH. Young isn't ready. Apparently, Dylan Zingler apparently isn't ready. I'm not asking you to just bring these guys up for the quote unquote sake of bringing them up. I'm asking you, why is it you keep a status

quo that isn't working. I'm asking you why you expect a fan base that has waited ten years and I just gave you the numbers in which they didn't finish above five hundred and how far back they finished each year. I'm asking you besides that, you're asking this fan base to be patient because it's a rebuild. How many times does it have to listen to that type of rhetoric. It's ridiculous, and I know there's nothing that can be done about it

right now. Season's over. Can't sit here and bitch and left and right. It's not going to do any good. It cleanses your soul a little bit, cleanses your feelings a little bit. But my gosh, don't be mad at a fan base that's been waiting ten years. They've been more than patient. Phone number on the Meyer hotline is eighty sixty six eight three eight forty eight forty three. The Great John Wooden once talked about great teammates and what they bring to a team, how they care about each other, how they communicate with each other, how they celebrate with the other, how they take responsibility forget about their rages. They are reliable, They are dependable. That kind of describes Rod Beard of the Detroit News. You can follow him on Twitter at debt News Rod Beard. He

joins us now here on ex'es and Bros. As he crams for another draft night Pistons Basketball. They have the fifth and fifty third overall pick, and he will be at the Epistons practice facility getting ready for that, and he joins us, how are you, my friend, Chep, how are you? You're way too kind, way too no, no, Well, deserved to do it, such a wonderful job covering this team, and we really appreciate it, and I appreciate your time at number five. What should they

be looking for? They should be looking for an impactful player who can come in and I would say start. And if you can't find a player who's going to start, then you've got to look to trade the pick and either acquire some more assets to get a future pick and get somewhere lower in the draft, or you've got to package it somehow and get a v veteran who can help you a little bit more immediately. If you look at the average

age of this roster, it's insane. And I don't think drafting another nineteen twenty twenty one year old is going to help you in the immediate term. You've got to have very specific sights on what you want. If you want a good shooter, it's don't connect. If you want another big you've got to look that way, or a small forward. There are a couple of players there, and I haven't done all of the deep dives into everything that

met that Bezillas has. But you've got to look for something very specific and if it's not there, just trade out of the pig. I agree one hundred percent. I guess it depends on what you could get from a trade like that. But people talk about this draft being weak, or I shouldn't say that, it's not as strong as a draft as maybe it has been in the past. Unfortunately, there are certain names associated with the Pistons in

this situation. Donovan Klingen is one of them from Yukon. Why would they need another big man when they have a guy like Jalen Duran, who I like a lot. He's actually one of my favorite Pistons they have Isaiah Stewart. Is there room for another big man or should they be looking for a different position, even though today positions are so interchangeable. Yeah, I think it's very fluid in that sense. And here's the argument I can make for

cleaning. If you feel like Jalen Duran is closer and he's a better trade chip, then you keep playing in in trade Duran if you really just don't feel like Duran is a defensive presence that you want and you have to feel like clingon can be that you are setting the clock back if you do that. But it just depends on who you can get. Is the number five pick worse a veteran? Probably not. Is Jalen Duran getting you closer to

getting the veteran that you want, I would argue it is. So you don't have a lot of pieces that other teams want, but Jalen Duran may be one that you can package and get something serviceable in return. That's a great explanation. What's more important the draft or free agency for Detroit in the offseason. Free agency absolutely free agency, because you have the money to go out and make an impact and get to thirty million dollar players of forty and

twenty whatever you want to do with that. But you need veterans on this team. You can't have Isaiah Stewart as your longer, longest tenured player and really ride that you need a player in the NBA who can guide you, who has some playoff experience, and who can get you through those battles. Isaiah Stewart is a is a good player, but he's not your leader. He's not the one that's going to get you through the tough times. Kate Cunningham a good player, but he hasn't played enough to be the loan your

leading scorer, your best player, your leader, everything else. That's asking a lot of Kate Cunningham. I agree with everything you just said. The only thing I would argue is that I don't like they've had boy on Bogdanovich and it didn't really matter. I think you've got to have a player who is not necessarily older, but has experience, but is still in the prime

of his career. Now that's easier said than done. I understand that absolutely, But you've got to bring a guy in who can guide this team through some rough waters. The coaches can't always be that voice. I don't know who that is. People want names associated with that description. Do you have anybody in mind, realistically who the Pistons could go out and acquire as a

free agent that would make an impact. It's not a great free agent class or in a trade you'd like to see wearing Piston, red, white and blue. I would love to see Zach Levine, and it is a huge risk because of his contract, because of his injury history. But I feel like if you're going to make a move and free agency, you've got to go get an all star caliber, not even all star caliber, you need an all start. If you're going to jumpstart this this rebuild, you've got

to an all Stars. So you need a DeMar derozen a Zach Lavine, a Jeremy Grant type player to go out and bring them back. And it is that's your leading score, that's your a number one guy, and Caid can be paid. And this is the analogy I use. That kid Cunningham at Oklahoma State is one year there. Why didn't they do well in the tournament? He didn't have a complete team around him. He excels when he

has other A one elite level players around him. The Stems don't have that, and it's going to be a few years before they do unless they do something significant in free agency or the draft to try to do something. I just don't see that that draft pick is there, even if you're talking about Alexander sar or Risache. I don't see an impact will turn this thing around. Klingon could be that, but it's a duplicative piece that you're going to

have. Is there a small forward that makes a difference. Maybe if it's don't connect, who's going to come in and be a solid wing for you with some three point shooting. I don't know about Reed Shepherd and his three point shooting, but that's an area where we know that they need some help immediately. Rod Beard joining us here on Exes and Bros. Followhim on X at Debt News. Rod Beard, we're talking about what the Pistons do here

tonight. You wrote yesterday about Dennis Lindsay adding to the front office as the senior vice president of basketball Operations. What's the important piece of information that he brings to this organization? And those are the things that kind of fly under the radar, But what will his responsibilities be. He's like a GM, He's going to have some more strategic sort of things too, but I think he's going to handle a little bit more of the data to day stuff as

a GM would. And Trajan langdon is it will be that traditional team president role, and we haven't seen this since the stan Van Gundy era where we've had a team president and a general manager at the same time. But again, in Lindsay's case, he's an SEP of basketball ops. That's going to give him a little bit more leeway to do some things on his own. But the significance is he comes from a winning culture. Having worked with Dallas

this year. He was with Utah during their building years when they got down Ivan Mitchell could have been a Piston got down to Mitchell and they got Ruby Gobert. So they built that thing from that era where they weren't doing so well. So the experience in doing that, we've seen what Trajan Langdon has done in New Orleans to help to build that. I think you bring in guys who understand what the assignment is and they're able to execute on that.

I think Lindsay's going to do it, Michael Blackstone's going to do it. In Trajan Langdon have the background in the resume to be able to bring that. What do you like about Langdon? I like his honesty from the very beginning. He said he doesn't know a lot of stuff. He said, he acknowledged there's a long way to go in this and that this roster needs a lot more. He didn't come in trying to blow into any kind of smoker or tell you something that was not true. He said it's going to

take a long time. They've got a lot in front of them, and this team is very young, and they're going to have some work to do in free agency in the draft. I like that honesty from the very beginning. It's not a our salesman. He's going to tell you exactly what he sees. This is a hard question to answer, but how does he make this a place that is a viable destination free agents? I think you've got to You've got to make these young pieces viable pieces to build around. Jade

and Ivy doesn't strike you as a guy that you're gonna build around. Really, the only one you could say that is about Kate and to a lesser degree, Jalen Duran. You've got to bring in some other veteran pieces that say, hey, I want to come here, and it's it's just like the Tigers rebuild with Plug Rodriguez was the first piece of that. You need some names and you need some respect that people will look at the roster and say, hey, this is the place that I think I can come in

and help out and be that other piece that they need. But you've just got to start at one, and Kate is that one. They're gonna have to pay him the max in order to keep him around, but you've got to surround him with some other things too. Yeah, and rightfully so. But look, I mean, people bring up it's a good example. People bring up the Pug Rodriguez. The team didn't turn around really until Jim Leland took over, okay, because Pluge Rodriguez was not a good teammate when Alan

Trammell was there as the skipper. So that leads me to this Charles Lee named head coach in Charlotte. Who does Trajan Langen pick as the next head coach for the Pistons? Do you think today? I'm gonna say James Barrego because he has that same turnaround experience that he's done with Charlotte and he turned them into a plus five hundred team that made the playoffs, and he's used

to working with younger players. This isn't a good cycle where you have a lot of good names, But maybe that's the issue with the Pistons is that they've tried to go with the hot coach of the year type guy in a

Wayne Casey during that time in Amani Williams. Maybe you need a coach who's going to grow with the players and doesn't have that name plate where there's a level of respect, but then there's also a level of I know what I'm doing and you can't and the unwillingness to change with the times and the change with the roster that you have. In the end, Also that Moni Williams was let go after a year and why do you think it didn't work?

I think it didn't work mainly because he wasn't completely in and he said in his introductory press conference that it was about I mean, the money is a number. He didn't want to coach, and you just throw enough money. Everybody has a number. You throw him that number, and you know what, I can't turn that down, even if I just got to do it for the other coaches in the league, because it sets the market for coaching

salaries. Also, there was some pressure, probably from the coaching organization to make sure that you did that, but I don't think his heart was in it completely and I think the roster just wasn't conducive to doing something. If you had done Manty and you had had gotten a significant free agent, you may have had something to work with. He just didn't have a good enough roster to go out there and win this year. So great answer, but

two frustrations with that answer. One is he knew what he was getting when he signed with the roster and couldn't use sense. I mean, as smart as Tom Gores and his staff are in making the money that they've made, how do you not sense that this guy's coming here for the wrong reasons. It's not desire, it's financial. How do you not know that? Because I think in that world, money makes everybody happy. Money motivates everybody,

is the thought. And when when it doesn't, when you're still, hey, I'm here and I'm collecting the check, but I just don't have it, And you could you could kind of see that in games that he wasn't fiery, He wasn't the things that a coach should do, just taking a tech for your player just because he didn't have that fire and the players,

I would say, the player since that too. That's really disappointing. It really is and now he's he's going to get you know what, sixty four sixty five million dollars for not coaching Rod Beard joining us here on XUS and bros at Debt News. Rod Beard is how you follow him on X. So it's a big night for most teams in the NBA with this draft, and we mentioned how may not be as strong. How do you fix the issue if at all, that guys are coming out before they're ready because you're

seeing more and more international players being near the top. And that's fine, I mean rightfully, so let's go to Victor Weben Yamen did. But there's a lot of collegians who are coming out that many people thought, eh, he still needs more maturing. Reed Shepherd is a good example. He's going to be a top five pick. Is that an issue right now or do you think something can be fixed in that regard? No, I think that's

the system we've created now with even the G League. Even if you get drafted to a team and you go to the G League, you have some developmental time, but you're on a drafted contract. The money, it's too much money and there's too much opportunity to be able to develop. Do I want to be on a college campus now and making NIO money, or do I want to be on a even a second round pick that might be guaranteed a million or two million dollars. I'll take the chance and being with a

team and having NBA development over my college shape, right. I want to pick your brain on this. The other day, JJ Reddick was introduced as the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. He came on and somebody asked him what he was trying to show people basically, and he said, I don't give a blank. What do you think about a guy who in his introductory press conference uses profanity. Not that I'm a softy by any stretch. You know that because we're friends, we've known each other for a long time.

But I just wonder about the place and time him using that. I know you're familiar with it. What was your take on JJ Reddick's introductory press conference as the lakers new bench boss. Well, I think it just gets attention, and it's in the LA market. If he's going for the Bucks or the Timberwolves, I don't think that that gets nearly as much attention. But it's the Lakers and he's a TV guy. So he know him. You can put that clip on and it's gonna Hey, that's my coach.

That's he doesn't care about anything. And the attention, well, he's been caring about the attention for he GE's been for years. So you care about it or you don't. It got you, involted you to this position, and now you don't care about it. It seemed a bit disingenuous in the beginning, but I can see why he was trying to do it. Joe Mozoula is just the opposite, and his team won a championship. When people asked him certain questions he was he was pretty straightforward man. I absolutely love

some of his answers, and he's obviously deep in his faith. Do you how do you view that in the NBA as a guy who's willing to talk about faith and Christianity compared to others who want to shy away from it. It's refreshing to see because there is a population that really digs into that. You see in every football game after the game, their players can gather around in a circle and they pray about things. A chapel. In NFL or NBA games before the game, they have chapel and they talk and they pray

and they express their faith. It just doesn't really get projected as much as it should be. Yeah, they do it for baseball too. Before I let you go, one more thing. Five pick comes up commissioners, they're ready to introduce. Do you think it's a trade? Do you think it's a player? And if it's a player, who do you think the Pistons are taking tonight? I think it's a trade. But if it's a player in Donovan Klingon is available, I think you go ahead and do that.

The other one I will say is Dalton Connect. Those are the two targets. I would have. Wow, that's interesting, And I hope you're right because I really like Dalton Connect, not just because he fits a need for this team, but I think he's going to be a really solid player. I don't think there's anybody they're going to get who's going to be a multi year All Star. But the Baziula's kid is constantly referred to and linked to Detroit. What if they went that route, what would we be getting?

Get some guy with some upside that he can be a three and D type guy, but uh and and some decent shooting, but it's gonna it's a project that's going to take some time. I think connect and be effective a little bit sooner. And even in Clington's case, if he figures it all out on the NBA level, because big men in the NBA takes some time to develop. Also, if he can figure it out quickly, I think he can be good. It's good stuff, Rod, appreciate it, man,

you do a great job as always. Enjoy the draft tonight and hope to talk to you soon. Thanks for your insight, all right, thanks, you appreciate it. You bet all right, Rod Beard that you try news joining us to talk a little pistons as U and I think we've broached a lot of different topics able to get not just the draft, uh, but also the you know what tragent Langdon brings, what he's building with the front office, free agency, and how important it is for to try to

go out and get a guy or two. Uh, they've got the money. And I thought that was an interesting answer when you're talking about Zach Levine. Really like Kyle Kuzma, a guy who I think is gettable, But Zach Levine I like a lot and I think a lot of people who follow the NBA would like a lot too. Here's my question about Zach Levine. What kind of and this is the reason I let into Rod with John Wooden's

words about being a great teammate, what kind of teammate is he? Now you may pooh pooh that, but that's I think it's really really important because some of these young players are so impressionable that the Pistons have. So if you're gonna bring in a veteran, which is fine, I'm all for you know that, but it's got to be the right character guy too. I think that's important. Let's hoe Ron Hollin's a character guy because he's the draft

pick. So Rod Beard was close among some of the players that he was mentioning. They were taken right around that area, Donov and Klingen, for example, taking two players after Ron Holland. When we come back, we'll talk about first of all, it's our poll question, but we'll also talk about the draft from last night and anything else that might be on your mind.
