Each of the top three and thirteen of the top twenty five and the world golf rankings are here just outside Grand Rapids at the Meyer Classic, the tenth annual at b Livefield Country Club. It is an awesome event. It is round one today. It's also Round one of the US Open, by the way, at Pinehurst. Here. This is a track that well, it's incredibly
inviting. You'd love to play it, and it's it's supposed to be a great weekend. It might be a little bit of rain later on this afternoon, but this is an event that is worth three million dollars. It's a par of seventy two, six five and fifty six yards of challenging but fair golf. Now I would tell you this. You heard Julie Inkster with Bill Simonson on The Huge Show yesterday afternoon when they were asking about what it takes
to win here they go low. Here the average or you know, the winner of this event has been twenty one under par or better in five of the last six years. So you're going to see the world's best take dead aim and know they're going to have to shoot low. Like some courses you just survive, you know what I mean? That might be the case of Pinehurst. I don't know for the US Open, where you're just gonna have
to go, oh man, pars a good score today here. One of the many reasons players love this place is because they also they understand that they got a chance to use every club in their bag and they can go right at the pins. This is exactly what golfers love to do. They love to be able to rack up big scores and you're going to see that here today. It's phenomenal. And you know what, here's the other thing. This is another thing you can love about this event. It's not expensive.
You want to take the family to a really good sporting event where you see good people who love their sport and do what's right, you know, especially for kids. Ten bucks, that's it. Ten bucks. So how do you beat that? You can't. One hundred and forty four of the best in the world will be pared down after thy six to sixty five. Phenomenal stuff. All right, let's get the football. Okay. There are certain players who have to step forward, who have to elevate their game. I
hate one of those cliches is you got to step up. We hear that all the time, right, I get it. I've used it too. I just try not to use it too much. Elevate your game, take it to another level in order for your team to be successful. Cody Benjamin, who writes for cbssports dot Com, came out with an article on the under the radar player who could be a star for each NFC team. Who
is the under the radar player for you? For the Detroit Lions, here's who he says will be the under the radar player to be a star for Detroit. Now. The easy name to bring up is Terry on Arnold. He was first round pick for the line has a little surprised that he quote unquote slid to Detroit in the first round, but the lines will be better for it because he's a hell of a player. Enus Rekestraw is who he writes will be the under the radar player to become a star. Now,
star is you know? To me, a star would be a Pro Bowl player and I don't. I'm not sure. I haven't seen Nu Rakestraw play yet, at least not at the professional level. To say he's going to be a star might be a How about how about this, He's going to be a key contributor and a better player than where he was drafted. Okay, so that might be a better way of describing it. For this article, he writes, Rakestraw's tenacious physicality could make him an equally seamless fit for
a Dan Campbell contender, especially depending on Carlton Davis's availability at cornerback. Who would be the guy you would because I have a different name for you, Okay. For me, it's Josh Pascal. It doesn't have to be a rookie by the way. Okay, we've already gone through that before on Exis and Bros. For me, it's Josh Pascal. Here's a guy who played twelve games last year, started four, but did not have a great year. Had one sack, had twenty five tackles, had five tackles for loss.
It was okay. As a third round pick out of Kentucky, I thought he was going to provide more overall and what he's done. Injuries have gotten in the way. When Josh Pascal is healthy, I'm not saying he can beat the Aiden Hutchinson on the opposite side of the lone. He is a versatile guy, and I know I've been complaining at times about the Tiger. There is word or use of versatility. You know, I mean enough is enough when it comes to you know, a bunch of interchangeable parts.
I'd like everyday players. I would like two guys. I would like two bookends at the NFL level too, for the Lions or whatever your favorite team may be. Two bookends that are going to get after you. That would be ideal on every play. Although with defensive linemen you have to rotate him,
so I get all that. Josh Pascal is probably not that guy for Aiden Hutchinson opposite Aiden Hutchinson, but he is a guy who I think can be a difference maker for the Lions because of his ability to play inside and
outside and when healthy, I think he can be an absolute beast. He won't get double teamed, but if he showcases the skill that he had at Kentucky and the reason the Lions took him in the third round, then the Lions part of their issue, which was getting to the quarterback outside of Aiden Hutchinson, part of that issue I think will be solved. He is one of those guys that the expectation was there to be that kind of player but
has not materialized. And at sixty three, two hundred and seventy pounds. He's fast enough to be a defensive end and on certain plays not a lot, because it's it's a lot to absorb a three hundred and ten pound guard coming at you from a defensive tackle standpoint. But he can play a rep or two inside and I think that's important too. So for me it would be Josh Pasco. Who would it be for you? Another interesting one minute football note has certain players who are going to rise at the quarterbacks position or improve their game and who is expected to take a step back. This is very subjective, so I tread lightly when it comes to this topic. But where do you think Jared Goff is? Do you think he will be on the rise or do you think he will be taking a step back

doubt about it. Ben, I know we got some texts and folks, if you want to get involved, you can text us on sports Radio to twenty one thousand, or you can join us on the Meyer Hotline eight sixty six eight three eight forty eight forty three. Ben fire away. Yeah, it says I would love to see Derek Barnes take that next level after a big interception versus Tampa Bay and the playoffs layoffs A good one. When is the last time this franchise has had a stud linebacker backer? Okay, good
question. Well, they've had plenty. We know that. I'm not going to go back to Joe Schmid, Chris Pielman. Obviously Stephen Boyd was a stud linebacker. Yeah, I would I would rather see Jack Campbell step forward, being that he was a high draft pick. But Derek Ryns is a really good answer. I don't think there's a wrong answer, do you No. I mean, I'm with you. Linebacker's vital Alex Angeloni. I mean, he's you know, he's a decent player. I think you know the
depth, especially at that position. But what Barnes does and what he can do is give you things that you want from versatile linebackers. I would like to see him get to the quarterback a little bit more, but that's just me, whether it be from the outside or inside. And I've said this probably agnaws him, but I'm going to continue to say it because I think it's really important. I think Detroit's got to do a better job of getting
pressure through the middle. You want to pressure quarterbacks in their face. That's where they're most uncomfortable. Derek Barnes and other linebackers can do the same. But I love that answer to our question. Really good mind, so people know. I mean the question is basically, hey, listen, who do you want to see elevate their game that's going to help this team? And or who could be a possible surprise borderline star inness rakestraw is what was written
in this article. I would like Josh Pascal Derek Barnes as an answer is a really good one too. Another text via Sports Radio to twenty one thousand Ben fire Away, Yeah, yeah, I guess teams have figured out Reese's pitching. He's not been fooling batters, like yeah, I'm not going to go so far as to say that they're figuring him out, but yeah, look, last three starts not like his first three starts. I get there's a certain concern. The pitch mix is there, The pitch ability absolutely is
there. I love his arsenal quote unquote. The question is whether or not he's getting swing and missus as he missing bats. The hard contact rate as of late is a little concerning. But it just goes to show you, and I've said this before, there are I suppose every team is like this, but certain teams. The margin for error is a lot greater for certain teams than it is for the Tigers. A lot of things. I guess what I'm saying is a lot of things have to go right for this team
to be successful. And when you're not perfect, Okay, nothing's perfect, but when you have to play that mistake free you know, two more errors yesterday cost him. They had a couple of errors the other day. So you got two errors, you got a pitcher who couldn't find it, and you've got a lackluster offense with men in scoring position. You had twelve hits, but only two came with runners in scoring position. And I can go back to the power all I want, although Riley Green continues to impress.
Another home run yesterday, Matt Veerling with a home run, and he got off to a really good start. But when you have that margin for error, then I'm not saying you got to play perfect baseball, but you gotta be careful, a lot more careful than other teams hard to overcome a lot of that stuff. And that's what's happening. That's what's happening with the Tigers right now. As Mark Canna said, you know, we're not playing very
good baseball. That's pretty obvious. But what's more concerning is the fact that they're not playing very good baseball in any facet. The offense is still struggling, the defense is lackluster, even from guys who you expect to throwing error from Kelly is one thing. Cole Keith I told you this. I think he's going to be a good hitter. I'm not totally worried about him. I think there's too many people who jump the gun with young players and it's
not necessarily fair. He's a guy who forget about the contract. I know how people feel about the contract. You know, it's funny if the Tigers don't sign some of their young players, people get upset. Why don't you do what Atlanta does. Do what they did with Austin Riley, Do what they did with Ozzie Albi's do what they did with Ronald Acunya Jr. Yeah, I get it a little different situation for Atlanta. So they do it with Cole Keith, and like, what are you doing it for a guy
who hasn't played one game in the major leagues. They truly believe in this kid. I believe he's going to be a good hitter. And I don't use my set of eyes to come to that conclusion. I believe what a lot of the scouts have said within that organization and what guys who've seen a lot of baseball, like Jim Leland has said. Jim Leland truly believes in guys like Cole Keith and Spencer Torklesen and Torkelsen said some interesting things yesterday that
I want to get into at seven thirty five. But I think it's we know that he's not a great defense. It's a player. So how do you overcome poor defense. Well, you've got to make the You don't have to make the spectacular play, but you have to make the routine play. And he knows he's up there to hit. He's got to HiT's as simple as that. So make the routine play and hit. And I'm not asking you to hit home runs right now. I think the home run power will
come for col Keith. What I want is for you to have good swings, hard contact and get on base. And I don't think that's too much to ask for. The learning curve is there for him. We know that it's it's a steep learning curve going from Double A to Triple A to the major leagues at that young age. Remember this guy, this kid was drafted out of high school. So it's not that I'm giving him a free pass, but I understand what it's going to take for him to get to where
he needs to go and what the Tigers have to do. In the meantime, the Tigers need to be surrounding him with play who can do all the things that he's struggling with right now. Eventually he'll find it. He will, I'm confident in that. But you've got to have other guys who can do what he can't right now. And I don't think they have that, and I don't think they've had it for a while. And that's the problem. So we can look at, Oh, they're not playing good baseball,
and they're not. But what they're not doing is anything. Well, if you're going to have success at the major League baseball level, then you better do something exceptionally well, right, you can make up for some of the other stuff. Now, we use the example of the great teams probably too often. I'll be guilty of that. I bring up Baltimore, I bring up Philadelphia, I bring up the Yankees, I bring up the Dodgers. It's probably not always fair. What does Kansas City do well, let's bring
it back to where Detroit spends and who's in Detroit's division. What does Kansas City do real well? They feel the ball, they steal base, they have an identity. What's the Tiger's identity. If I asked you what their identity is, what would you say? They're in lies part of the issue. You can't give it to me because I don't think they have one. Seven thirty five, we will talk about what Spencer Torklins had to say down
in Toledo. It goes back to something similar to what I mentioned regarding the LPGA and the Meyer Classic that we're at right now and Julie Inkster's comments to Bill Simonson and the huge show yesterday. It has to do with the mental side of sports and the mental side of baseball. We'll get to that when we come back on Ex'es and Bros. Live from the Meyer Classic and Grand Rapids here on the Michigan Sports Network. There's a new player in town.
TI. I'm hearing North Blans all Pro wide Receiver and I'm talking about Eagle Casino in Sports, the real money mobile casino. It's so easy to play. So started in round one here at the Blackfield Country Club for the tent Aanniel Meyer Classic. They are just getting underway. A lot of golfers still on the range, a lot of golfers still on the putting surface. I knew that it was supposed to have a chance at some rain later today, but it is kind of I mean, these clouds moved in quickly and there is some threatening weather in the area for sure. Let's hope it holds off, and let's hope it gives these players an opportunity to get out there and
smacking around this beautiful course. It really is. It is a gorgeous golf course, and they're going to go low today or all weekend. I should say, as I mentioned earlier, five or less six years, it's taken at least twenty one under par to win this event. So we talked to a couple of golfers on Exus and Bros. Yesterday And asked them what they like about it, and they said, you know, you can go for it. Watching a lot of these players kind of chip from off the putting
surface close to the whole. First of the First of all, their their hands amaze me, the touch that they have. I you know, I've got hands like alignment for crying out loud around the around the green. These folks they are just they just curl it up there. It's just a it's a beautiful thing to watch. If you got the opportunity and you're in this area, this is a great event. It really is, and it's for a great cause. Simply give where they give back to the food pantries in
Michigan and the Midwest. A phone number on the Meyer Classic on the Meyer Hotline eight sixty six eight three, eight forty eight forty three, and you can text the program sports Radio to twenty one thousand. As we broadcast live from here, our friend Bill Simonson for the huge show. We'll be out here later on today as well. All Right, I want to get to this quarterbacks. You know, we all know how important the position is,
right and we probably we'll probably make too much of it. We give them way too much credit when they win, I'm generalizing now, and probably way too much blame when they lose. Now we've heard that before, but it really is true. The thing about quarterbacking is we don't always know, Like when we see a quarterback miss on something, throw an interception, unless it's blatant, it's hard for us to truly understand slash recognize whose fault it was.
I mean, we rely on the TV analyst or the radio analyst to try and help us a little bit. But while we're watching, if we're in attendance or we're just watching on TV, when we see it happen, we think, oh no, come on, man, you can't make that pack. It might not be his fault. It might be the receiver's fault. You just don't know. But we do know that is. I think it's fair to say it's the most important position in sports. That and Goaltending.
With that said, and knowing that Jared Goff received that huge contract, the largest alliance history, I wondered where he would rank. When I read an article on quarterback poised to improve or regress in twenty twenty four, and before I read this article, and before you start to try and gauge which quarterbacks, because I'm sure if you're driving around, if you're listening right now, you're thinking to yourself, Okay, who would I say is going to
regress or who would I say is going to improve? And where do I think Jared Goff may be. I'm sure those are all the things running through your mind, just like it did for me when I first saw these headlines. I do believe because of certain players and they're built up credibility for greatness. We're not going to, for example, Patrick Mahomes, you're not going
to suggest that he's going to regress. He was just the reason they won another championship, especially knowing full well that they don't necessarily have the offensive weapons that he's had in the past. Right, we think he did more with less this year because they only had eleven wins. We think they did more with less because he no longer had a weapon like Tyreek Hill for example. And I think Patrick Mahomes is the best in the business. But we do
have to understand that Patrick Patrick Mahomes made plenty of mistakes this year. That included plenty of interceptions. And that's why I bring up the interceptions that we don't know always know it's the quarterback's fault. Look, twenty seven touchdowns.
Hats off to you man, Not that that led the league by any stretch, but he had fewer touchdown passes than, for example, Josh Allen or to a tongue of ala, if that's what it's about for you, you know, maybe you're looking at different things, maybe different statistics matter more to you. But he had fourteen picks, which is, you know, fourth most in the league. I'm not saying he's Sam Howell, but it's not
like he didn't struggle at times. But you're not going to because of his reputation and because of his accomplishments, You sure as how are not going to suggest that Patrick Mahomes is going to take a step backward. Right, Okay, So who are the guys you think might elevate their game and who are the guys who might regress a little bit. Here's what they suggest in this
in this article. Most likely to improve, they said, Patrick Mahomes, which is kind of funny because MVP a couple of years ago right led the league in touchdown passes. A couple of years ago, forty one led the league in yards as well. They thought he regressed a little bit, barely over four thousand yards. Again, there are so many factors involving quarterbacks that it's almost unfair to sit there and say that he regressed. He won a world championship. He did it by going on the road, and he did
it against the best defense in football. Should be something said for that. Huh, they think he will progress improve. Okay, another guy they think is going to improve Jordan Love. Now this makes sense because after all, we didn't really have much of a barometer on Jordan Love. We saw him take over a Green Bay team that well, quite honestly doesn't have much at all, didn't think that they would win much at all. And look at what he did. He went out there and he threw thirty two touchdown passes
and he made Green Bay fans almost forget Aaron Rodgers. The thirty two tds second most in the NFL only Dak Prescott through more. And considering he doesn't have a ton of weapons around him. I used weapons with air quotes. I mean, does he have a number one? He actually was. He actually came out and said that it's okay not to have a number one.
It's less pressure. You could start spreading the football around a little bit more, which I found pretty interesting because he said this right as you and I were talking about some of the best wide receivero wide receiver combinations in the sport. Remember we had that conversation yesterday. They expect him to improve. CJ. Stroud was the runaway rookie of the year and for good reason. Phenomenal player, phenomenal season. I should say twenty three tds only five picks,
led the league in that category. Touchdown to interception ratio, led the league in yards per game at two hundred and seventy four yards per game. The only other two quarterbacks to do those put up those types of numbers in rank where they did in a regular season where Joe Montana who won the MVP in nineteen eighty nine, and Tom Brady who won the MVP in two thousand and seven. That tells you the kind of company that CJ. Strod was keeping
from a year ago. So they expect him, which I think is pretty lofty. They expect him to improve on those numbers. Now he does get Stefan Diggs, he has more weapons. Maybe that's what they're figuring. This is going to help them. Jalen Hurts, they expect to improve as well. Bryce Young, they expect to improve. You can't I'm not gonna say you can't get much worse, but you talk about a struggle for Bryce Young
again, look at what he has around him. Understand that the others they expect to improve to a tongue of aloa, Lamar Jackson, MVP Will Levice. Okay, here are the quarterbacks they believe are most likely to regress take that step backwards, and I think you can figure out some of them. One is Brock Purdy. There's just not many people who believe in him for some reason or another. Is it because he's mister irrelevant? I think it.
I find this interesting in sports, and maybe I'm overreacting here. Feel free to tell me that I am. When a guy is mister irrelevant and has success the first year, we sit there and go, oh man, what a great story. I love the story of Brock Purty. I love the perseverance. I love that he came from Iowa State and overcame the odds. Then when he does it a little bit more people are looking to tear
him down. Eh, how good can he really be? He was mister irrelevant, he came from Iowa State, he overcame some odds, But really does he belong in the same conversation as Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen and Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert and guys like that. We immediately start to question why we gave him as much credence in the first place. Have you ever found that it seems like it? In other words, we're just not sold on him for some reason or another. Here's a guy who set
the NFL single season record for passing yards per attempt. Remember how everybody last year said he's a dunk guy. You know, he would just dunk off to guys underneath, throwing underneath routes. He set a record last year for yards per attempt among quarterbacks with at least three hundred and fifty attempts. That's how wrong their narrative was around brock Purty. So many people didn't want to give him credit because they didn't feel like he could or would throw downfield.
They felt like all he did was check down. They couldn't be more wrong. He also led the league in passer rating. But the word is from national writers now that is not sustainable in twenty twenty four. Why sure, he's got Christian McCaffrey, he's got Deebo Samuel, he's got George Kill, he got Brandon Ayuk. That's all great stuff, it really is. That's what good teams. Dare I say great teams have to have. Don't look at Kansas City from a year ago and think that's the norm. It's not.
The norm is having more than one good player. See in basketball, when you have three four good players and you win a championship, people say that's what you need. Look at Dallas right now, Doncic and Irving are carrying them. People are wondering, where's the other guy. You need a third guy. Boston has that and then some so they give him a ton of credit. Right Absolutely, Why in football do we take away from certain
quarterbacks because they have weapons around them. Another guy they expect to regress is Jared Goff. Again, people just don't believe, even though he took a team to a super Bowl, even though he just won the division first time for the Lions, even though he made it to the NFC Championship game and they had a big lead and they arguably were the better team than San Francisco, people just don't want to believe. Here's what they write about Jared Goff.
He threw four for four thousand yards and over twenty five touchdowns thirty for the second season in a row, so he's done it in back to back years, but there's still no belief something Matthew Stafford did five times in twelve seasons with the Lions, but never in consecutive seasons. Like golf, the Lions rewarded him with a five year, two hundred and twelve million dollar extension, making him the second highest paid player in the entire NFL on an average
year basis at fifty three million. Don't know what that has to do with whether or not you believe he will progress or digress, but it's factual. Detroit's entire offensive corps remains intact in twenty twenty four, but the Lions failed to add significant wide receiver talent opposite Aman Ross Saint Brown in the offseason.
Second team All Pro tight end Sam Laporta makes for a strong second option, and they do have Jamison Williams entering year three, but the failure to find a reliable number three in a tough NFC North that includes a rising young Green Bay Packer squad and a revitalized Chicago Bears group could lead to a golf regression. So because the other teams are a little bit better. You're gonna hold that against him. That seems odd to me, like you don't want to
believe in him. You're just not seeing it. Okay. I don't know what a guy has to do to prove it to you. The horn just sounded here at Field Country Club, which means they're asking golfers to come off the course, which means the weather is going to spoil at least the start of round one. That's unfortunate. I knew he was supposed to rain a little bit later on, but I didn't think you would hear that horn so
early here on a Thursday morning for round one. So the thunders are coming and the dark clouds are hanging over us as well, so a lot of golfers heading back into the clubhouse. I will keep you updated here from the Blackfield Country Club for round one or the tenth annual Meyer Classic. Interesting about what's taking place here anyway, Regarding the Jared Goff news, I think it's I think it's Look, maybe you don't believe it because he's not so fluid.
Maybe you don't think he's got that great versatility that some of the more athletic quarterbacks have. In other words, he's not as pretty when he drops back to pass. His arm action isn't Dan Marino. He's not Bernie Kosar either, and Bernie Kosar is pretty successful with the Cleveland Browns, wasn't he. I think Jared Goff's a good quarterback. I think he's a very good
quarterback. I got no problem with him under center for the Lions. The problem I have is that he seems to and I suppose this could be you can make this case for anybody who hasn't won a Super Bowl, but he seems to have to prove himself before the season every single year. It's not that you know, he's proven himself during the season. Every quarterback has to
do that, every athlete has to do that. But for him to have to prove himself before the season, after putting up the season that he did a year ago, is a little disappointing and surprising that people just are not buying end the lines have bought in, Otherwise they wouldn't have rewarded them with the contract that they did. Let's hope they're right and that this website is wrong. Phone number on the Meyer Hotline eight sixty six eight three eight forty
