Just text Sports Radio to twenty one thousand. I'm ma Att Sheppard. The Toronto Blue Jays are one of the biggest, I think the biggest disappointment in baseball. So far, they are twenty and twenty five. They are a minus forty six in run differential. They score the second fewest

runs, they allow the seventh most challenging combination. Their general manager is Ross Atkins. He said, I believe in this talent. There is time left, but there's a massive sense of urgency and we need to get it turned around soon. It's the quarter pole. Once you get to the halfway mark, there's not much you can do if the whole remains the same or see, you are always prepared for any angle or any pivot that you have to make. That's the general manager of the Toronto Blue Jays, who sit last

in the American League East and eleven and a half games out. Here's the difference. You may want to hear something like that from Scott Harris. You're not going to. Here's the difference. Toronto expected to compete. Harris told you before the season that they're not necessarily there yet. The difference is Toronto

has their core group. They have the guys they expect to be able to win with Vladimir Guerrero Junior, Bob Baschett, George Springer, Dalton varshow younger guys now, maybe not Springer as much, but the others Guerrero Junior, Bishett var Show, a guy like Cavin Bigio. Those guys are expected to

be the core of that team moving forward. And right now you throw in the different pitchers Kevin Gosman, Chris Bassett, Jose Barrios, husekkuce alec Manoah has not been good for the last two years after being an All Star a few years ago. So there's the difference. The other difference is this as a team, they spend two hundred and twenty six million dollars. They are

ninth ninth in all of baseball in payroll. There's your difference. The Tigers are about one oh four, one four, one six in that range. Think of that. That's a Toronto team that spends more than twice as much as the Tigers, and yet they have three fewer wins. Now, it's a different schedule, so let's not get too crazy. I don't know where you sit on this in terms of spending money. The belief is you've got to spend money to win. Cleveland spends ninety three million folks their payroll and

they're doing just fine. They're rolling right now. Good for them. Somehow, some way they are able to do it. They find a way to get it done. Think of this, the Chicago White Socks, worst team in the division. Without a doubt, you could argue the worst team in baseball. Fifty million bucks separates Chicago and Cleveland. Think of what you could do with a fifty million dollars in a one year span. You know,

I'm not talking about the length of a contract. I'm talking about this year White Sox spending about one forty nine one fifty if I can round up to the ninety three for Cleveland, more than fifty million. Think of this. The New York Mets, they spend a boatload of money. They're under five hundred. They're paying seventy million dollars to people who aren't playing for them. Oakland plays sixty million to pay the guys who do play for them. Six

Dodgers. The Dodgers play in a really competitive division, right and San Diego is supposed to be good. San Francisco's got a high payroll. Arizona reached the World Series a year ago, so going in you thought it was a pretty competitive division. They spend three times more than four other teams in all of baseball. They are paying six players with guaranteed right contracts. Six of their players with their guaranteed contracts made one point eight two billion dollars. The

Baltimore Orioles sold for one point seven billion. That'll tell you something, doesn't it. I mentioned the San Diego Padres. There are at five hundred. I said in the last segment, you want to ticked off fan base, shouldn't it be San Diego? Absolutely? They slashed their payroll eighty six million and still spend one hundred and sixty two million dollars. Did I tell you

that Tigers spent about one four to one oh six. This is before all the taxes and stuff like that, so it might be bumped up just a little bit, but not much. It's still well under the lower half. Phone number on the Meyer hot line eight sixty six eight three eight forty eight forty three. It's interesting because of this. In football, Lions fans across the state, across the country, what did they do? They blamed the Fords. I heard it for decades. Get rid of ownership. They don't

spend the money, which is not necessarily true. Under Rus Thomas. They didn't spend money. They were so cheap. They squeaked under Russ Thomas. But once he left Chuck Schmidt they spent money. They didn't spend it the right way. How come nobody says that about baseball? Why were the Fords the ire of so many people's passion? But in baseball when the Tigers have such a low payroll, Remember they used to have one of the highest under Mike Ilich. They used to have one of the highest. But for some

reason, nobody says a thing about this low payroll. Why is that? I don't hear that conversation when we hear about the Tigers. What do we hear Torkelsen, Hinch, Harris in that order? Haven't heard one person this year that I can recall. Ben Stop me if I'm wrong, who has complained about the spending. You knew all about it with Alliance, But for some reason, even though the Tigers haven't won anything, you never hear about

it. Meyer Hotline eight sixty six eight three eight forty eight forty three The text line Sports Radio to twenty one thousand. We're back with more on exes and bros. He's with you Monday through Friday from three until six. Ben is our producer. He's itching to take your phone call at the Myer hotline eight sixty six eight three eight forty eight forty three. I know we got some techs Ben, let's get to him. Yeah, we got one. It says Dan Snyder and Mike Illich in the past are proof throwing money at teams doesn't buy championships. The two thousand and two Red Wings team was one exception. Well, I mean before that, the Wings spent plenty of money. What

do you think? Here's what I want to know from people is getting there good enough. I mean to prove that money works. So Dan Snyder's a really good example. Cleveland Brown spent a lot of money Miles Garrett at times when they had Miles Garrett and Baker Mayfield and they had Odell Beckham, I mean they had a high payroll. Dallas Cowboys Jerry Jones Is won in the past right with Jimmy Johnson, won a couple of Super Bowls. They spend a lot of money every year they don't win. What about the Dodgers.

Traditionally Dodgers, Matts, Red Sox all spend a slew of money. The Dodgers historically top five in payroll, one hundred wins each of the last three seasons. Lost in the NLDS, got swept, lost in the NLDS in four games, lost in the NLCS. They won a COVID shortened World Series in twenty twenty. Now they have been to the World Series in eighteen and seventeen I believe lost them both. Making the playoffs every single year since twenty

thirteen is really impressive. Having one championship considering the cost of their payroll, is it all that impressive? I'd love to be having my team in the playoffs every single year. That should be the expectation, especially in the AL Central, that should be the expectation. But they've got one championship during that stretch, and it was a sixty game season, folks. Is that enough for you? That's what I wonder. Do you have to get there?

Do you have to make the playoffs? You have to get to the World Series? You have to win it? What is it that satisfies you? And I'm sure a lot of people right now are kind of nod in their head saying, look, I'd just be happy to make the playoffs again. That would last for what a year or two? Then eventually you're gonna go come on, man, I mean you gotta win. I want them to win. I'll get satisfied when they won a World Series. I'll get satisfied

when any team in this Detroit market wins a championship. Then I'll be happy. Now with teams that win fourteen games in the NBA missed the playoffs for an eight straight year. In the NHL, can't win arguably the weakest division in baseball, and until this year, struggled to make the postseason into the NFL. It's a Midwest mindset. It's what I love most about this area, but it's also one of the things that turns my stomach. Sometimes.

You don't want to be the jackasses from way out east. You don't want to be the people out west who don't seem to care. You want to be the people who are nice where you raise a family in the Midwest. And that's all fine and dandy, but you know what, you're not winning championships, you're not playing for championships, and in most cases you're not even playing in the postseason. That's frustrating. That's ridiculous, and it's got a

change, and it changes with our mindset in general. So that's what I'm wondering we're going to complain about. Well, that text Mike Eilich and Dan Snyder, they spent money and didn't win. You're right, I mean, Mike Keilich would argue, you know what they do win. They won divisions, and they won American League championships, and they reached the World Series, but they didn't win it all. So if they're in lies of the frustration, he lost money at times with the Tigers. Did you enjoy that period

of time in Tigers baseball or this period in time of Tigers baseball. It's interesting that that's the name that's brought up Houston. Look at how often they have been to the World Series. Look at how good Houston, the Houston Astros have been, I would say recently, one of the model American League franchises. Right, They've been to the playoffs every year since twenty seventeen and since you know, they missed it I think in twenty sixteen, but they

made it in twenty fifteen. They've got World Series titles, two of them, twenty twenty two, twenty seventeen, they have two championships. Then they've played in two other World Series, lost in twenty twenty one and lost in twenty nineteen. Last year, twenty twenty three, Jim Crane talked about money. They didn't reach the tax threshold, the luxury tax. People in Houston

were really upset. This is a team that last year lost in the ALCS in seven games, won the World Series prior to went to the World Series the year before that. They had a stretch of going to the World Series in three out of a four year span, and fans were pissed off at

their owner for not surpassing the luxury tax that's in Houston. Meanwhile, here in Detroit haven't sniffed the postseason since twenty fourteen, haven't been above five hundred but once during that stretch twenty sixteen when they were eighty six and seventy five. That's what you got right now. I don't hear anybody talking about the ownership. I hear people bitching about Javier Bias and Spencer Torkolsen and aj Hinch and Scott Harris or hitting coaches. What the hell are they doing hitting?

Let's spend it some money on some guys. You're making it, am I wrong? There? You're making a lot of money. You got people going down there for attendance last year one point seven mil. Year before one point six mil. What people have told me, you kind of need about two million to break even. They had two million in twenty seventeen, and they were sixty four and ninety eight. Their attendance was two point three million fans in this area, two point three million fans. They went sixty four and

ninety eight. Meyer Hotlines open for you, eight sixty six eight three, eight forty eight forty three. That's eight sixty six eight three eight forty eight forty three, or you can text US Sports Radio to twenty one thousand when we come back. The Jared Goff situation last week, some people liked it, understood it, agreed with it, others did not. At the time, I warned you it's the quote unquote going rate, and you will see

things escalate from here. Soon. He will be what Patrick Mahomes was in the sense where Patrick Mahomes signed this big contract but then was pushed down with others making more. You're going to see that happening with Jared Goff. The next guy might be right around the corner. And if you think you're upset, think about how this fan base should feel. We'll get to that when

and Bros. Throughout the great state of Michigan. Glad you're with us. Last week we told you about the Jared golf extension, and for good reason, we felt like it was inevitable that you were going to have something like this. It's just his I mean, that's the way. That is the way the NFL, that's the way sports works. You get paid oftentimes for what you have already accomplished. I don't always like that. There are some teams. What they'll do is they'll project ahead, what do we think this

player is going to be. The Atlanta Braves are a great example of that. The Atlanta bit Braves locked up their young core Ossi Albi's, Ronald'cunye Junior, Austin Riley. They locked these guys up, Spencer Stryder because of what they're about to do for them. There's too many teams that pay after the fact, Hey, this is what you've done for me, and then

they kind of get burned by it after that. In football, in the NFL, especially at the quarterback position, You're gonna get paid for or for the most part, for what you've done already, hoping that it continues. Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts. There are five quarterbacks who make fifty million dollars per season. Burrow's the highest paid at fifty five mil per year. Fifty two starts, he makes fifty five million dollars

a year. I think he's a great quarterback. Love him. Doesn't stay healthy enough for me. It's disappointing, but the talent, without a doubt, is there. Justin Herbert makes fifty two and a half million dollars career record under five hundred. I think he's a top five quarterback. Hell of a talent. I'd take him any single day. Lamar Jackson, two time MVP, makes fifty two million dollars as well. Look at his numbers.

Hasn't won a Super Bowl, but he's a two time MVP. He's fifty eight to nineteen all time in his career, and the touchdown to interception ratio are definitely there. Jalen Hurts, he makes fifty one million dollars. He's led a team to a Super Bowl. He's thirty four and seventeen as a starter. He's the future of the Philadelphia Eagles. And Jared Goff who signed last week. You are going to see more quarterbacks join that group and do

it soon. One of those guys who I think is good, he has not been as good as I thought he would be when he came out of college, and that is Trevor Lawrence. Now, Trevor Lawrence is really the only guy from the twenty twenty one draft from a quarterback standpoint, who's done anything. What he's done has been minimal, but he's the only one who's done anything. Zach Wilson, already traded by the New York Jets last year of his contract, will not be picked up. We know that Trey Lance

nowhere to be found, traded from San Francisco to Dalla. I mean, how do you find that one? Right? I mean, that's a name that so many Lions fans, if you recall back in twenty twenty one, wanted desperately. That'd been a great guy to take. Kyle Pitts has been productive in Atlanta. Jamar Chase one of the best receivers in football, Jaylen Waddle, Penne Sewell was drafted by the Lions. He's the real deal. We all know that. One of the best tackles in football. And then

there are others. Devonte Smith a little bit later on, Justin Fields has already been traded. Micah Parsons arguably the best player in the draft. We could go on and on and on all right, especially in football when you get first second round picks, but I'm just giving you an idea. Trevor Lawrence was the first overall pick there. He's played in fifty games. He's thrown fifty eight scores thirty nine interceptions in his career. He's twenty and thirty.

Not all his fault, Nope, not at all, but that number stays with quarterbacks struggled mightily. His rookie year, led the league in interceptions with seventeen, only won three games. The following season led his team to the postseason. He was actually in the MVP conversation, finished seventh in that regard, and then last year a five hundred record. End of the rookie year is coming up, or end of the rookie contract, i should say,

is coming up. So what do you do well? The belief is, and I get this, the belief is that he's going to sign a contract extension soon. They're in talks right now about a contract extension that is expected to pay him drum roll, fifty million dollars a year that according to ESPN, He's not the only one. Dak Prescott is going to be in that conversation too. He's entering the final year of his deal with Dallas.

Ask yourself, those guys worth fifty million, because you asked yourself that, and you asked me about Jared Goff, So I'm asking you, what do you think? Jared Goff not all with the Lions. We know that sixty six and fifty. He's got to tie in there. Sixty six and fifty, Dak Prescott seventy three and forty one in Dallas. Are they winning?

Not to Dallas's liking, they're not. They expect a hell of a lot more than what Dak Prescott has delivered, right, absolutely, Guys, first team All Pro in twenty twenty three, depending on which vote you look at Pro Football Writers, he was associated Press, he was second team either way. Hell of a job, right, Okay, So that's what I wonder because I told you this was going to happen. It's become a bit of a bar and then others are going to exceed that or come close to it.

That would make you shake your head. People in Dallas, no doubt, are like, are you kidding me? We're going to do this? And Dak Prescott has got a couple of postseason wins in Dallas's two and five in his career in the playoffs. That's not good enough, not when the standard was Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman. Not good enough at all. But you see how things. That's the going rate. That's what they're going to have to do. Lawrence and the Jaggs discussing a new deal. Dallas about

to make a decision on Dak Prescott. Why is that? I'll tell you why it is, and we say this at nauseum. It's because there aren't that many great quarterbacks in the world. There just aren't. You watched to a tongue of a law that contract is going to be coming up sometime soon. How much is brock Perty going to make eventually? Or a Jordan love c J. Stroud's agent is thrilled right now. Those are all the guys who are eyeing and taking note of what happened with Jared Goff and how it's

going to affect Trevor Lawrence and Dak Prescott. Because those other guys they just mentioned they're up soon. It's not happening for Sam Howell and Derek Carr and Geno Smith and guys like that Bryce Young, No, that's that's not happening unless something drastically changes. But for those other guys, And here's the here's the other reason. You don't know what's coming. You don't know what quarterbacks

are coming out of college that will be worth a damn. And the reason you don't know is because you've seen so many You and I have seen so many teams take their shot with certain quarterbacks. I brought up Zach Wilson.

I brought up justin fields. You look at this year's draft, you can't be so naive to think that all these quarterbacks, as happy as they may have been in Detroit or wherever it is they celebrated, and as big a hug as they gave Roger Goodell phony all that stuff, you can't think that Caleb Williams, Jaden Daniels, Drake May, JJ McCarthy Michael Pennox are all going to be top notch qbs. The numbers just don't support it. It's

hard to find the guy. And as I've said before, if you don't have the guy as a general manager, you keep spending every waking moment trying to find the guy. Look at the quarterbacks. I don't know what your measurement is. I don't know if it's yards, I don't know if it's touchdowns. I don't know if it's quarterback rating. Maybe it's wins. Where where would your cutoff line be? How many quarterbacks played a year ago? Fifty? I believe maybe more, maybe more than that, because Tim Boyle

got some snaps. CJ. Bethard got some snaps. The Bears played Brett Rippin for a little bit, Jeff driscoll played for crying out loud, So more than fifty. I mean. AJ mccerrn's playing in the UFL right now, and he played in a couple of games. I'm not talking about guys who threw passes. I'm talking about guys who actually were quarterbacks, like Nathan Peterman was a quarterback last year. So more than fifty cues played last year.

That might surprise people. But let's just say somewhere in that neighborhood fifty to fifty five, how many of them are worth having? And don't give me Bailey Zappi and stuff like that. I'm talking about guys who are worth having that you would want under center every single Sunday. Play that little game with friends of yours. Maybe don't look at a list, volleyball back and forth with one another, and say, give me a quarterback you would want.

Don't double up on the answers. It's a little exercise. Okay, guy you would want, And then where does it stop. I mean, have some criteria, have something that you truly believe in. Say to yourself, Okay, I'm not gonna mention a name just for the sake of mentioning the name. I mean, I want this guy under center. You won't last very long. You might last one commercial break. One commercial is in like sixty seconds. I mean, if you know your football back and forth

real quick, folks, you're done after about ten maybe maybe twelve. And we make it sound like let's just go get a guy. Every team says that most teams are going, you know what, We're lucky if we got our guy that's why the Lions feel for fortunate. You could call him a situational quarterback, a systematic quarterback. All you want, the Lions feel like they have a guy they don't have to worry about under center. Not many teams can say that. I'll play that game with Ben when we come back,

all right, We'll go back and forth. We'll tell him and show you just how limited it really is. It won't take long, I promise you. He'll say a name. I'll say a name. We'll go back and forth, maybe six times, and then it'll stop because deep down inside there are certain guys. No way do I want them.
