You can't handle the true now told our players you need a bit more like a dog. We don't need a bunch of cats in here. Looking in the mirror, I look good. I got my extra bands on, I got my other shoes. Be a doll. We don't need no meals. We don't need no cats. We need more dogs.

They're not a detain Oh you're not. That day we weren't good. There's no sense of asking me things about the game. I'm telling you. We laid an egg. So I'm not gonna break it down for you. He sucks. He sucked. He laid an egg. That's all I have to say. Guys, I'm sorry. I'm not going to break it down for you. Nothing went well for us. It's on us. We have to figure it out. Em We went hydn final hour of the program. Welcome to ex'es and bros. We're with you Monday through Friday six until nine.

We are on throughout the state of Michigan and Flint and Cadillac. We're on and Grand Rapids and in Gray Linny and Gaylord in Midland, Sagan on Bay City, We're on in Pataski and Charlavoy are up in Traverse City as well. Ben is our producer. I'm Matt Shephard. The Meyer hotline is eight six six eight three eight forty eight forty three. The text line is sports Radio to twenty one thousand to get involved. Astros win at nine to

three yesterday they beat the Tigers two out of three over the weekend. Detroit now twenty up and twenty down. Matt Manning gets the call tonight in Game one of the series against Miami, who has eleven wins on the year. If you don't win this series, then people should be pissed off, without question. And they are already pissed off because the Pistons losing the lottery again. Yes they lost. I know they're picking fifth, it's still a loss.

When you had the best chance to get the number one overall pick and you dropped to five, you should be upset and feel like you have lost something. Atlanta at three percent gets the number one overall pick. It's not a deep draft. It's not according to most scouts, doesn't mean they're right because you've seen second round picks make huge differences like Jalen Brunson Nikola Jokicic, for example. Late first round picks like Pascal siakam og Onanobi make differences but

viewed by most scouts as an unimpressive draft. There's no franchise changing player in this draft, but Detroit's going to pick fifth for the second time in as many years. Pacers beat the Knicks one twenty one to eighty nine. That series is tied at two a piece. Denver knocks off the Timberwolves one fifth teen one oh seven. Jokich had thirty five, seven and seven. That series has tied it to Denver. By the Way, has now gone nine

to four in its last thirteen road playoff games. Anthony Edwards had forty four in a losing effort. Panthers were on the road and beat the Bruins three to two. They're up three to one in the series, and Vancouver edged Edmonton four to three. The Canucks lead two games to one in their series. Connor McDavid had his ten game playoff point streak snapped. Roy McElroy wins a record fourth straight Wells Fargo Championship. He cards a seventeen hunder par for

the tournament. Then I know we got some texts. Yeah, people have been kind enough to take time out of their day to text us and give us their thoughts. We want to make sure we get to it fire away. Yeah. This goes back to the Joe Dumars and John Hammond conversation. It says, did Chris Spielman and Steve Eisman view it great to come back to two terrible situations? I doubt it. They had it great too.

No, that's that's totally different, totally different. So Steve Eisman had already established himself in Tampa and the Detroit Red Wings situation, understanding it was going to be a rebuild. Okay, Steve Eisen was still relevant in the league. He was viewed as one of the best general managers in the league. That's not what Joe Dumars is viewed as or John HAMMTT. Chris Spielman viewed it as a challenge the owner reached out to him. He viewed it as

a challenge for a team. That is, and by the way, he had never done that job. Going from TV into it is different than going from a cushy job with the league to a team that has been less than stable and less idealit less of an ideal situation. So I don't think those are similar examples at all, I give. I think Chris Pielman's a huge

reason why this Lion's team has turned the corner. I think they have drafted more players of his character, of what he likes, what he respects, who he would have wanted to play like and with than a lot of people have given him credit for. We talk a lot about Brad Holmes, and for good reason, but I think Chris Pielman's a big part of it too. Look I appreciate your thought, I do, and I respect the opinion. I just disagree with it. I don't think going back to people who

were successful with this organization twenty years ago is the answer. Chris Bielman's not the general manager, by the way, and the Steve Eisenman situation, Like I said, Steve Eisman was still relevant in his league. Joe Dumars is not. John Hammond's not the general manager. Do you want him as a president of basketball operations? If that's your argument for John Hammond, I get it, But bringing them back as the general manager or in both. I

just Joe Dumars. That ship is sailed. I think there's just no reason for it. And by the way, you were probably pretty pissed off a lot of the decisions he made, especially down the stretch before he was let go, and then he went to Sacramento and didn't do anything either. By the way, another text, go ahead, Ben, Oh that was the last one. Oh, I'm sorry, No, it was another one. All right, give a TEXTA program Sports Radio twenty one thousand. I'm as

guilty as anybody else, by the way, I am. I'm guilty. I stick to my guns on certain things. Hey, listen, so is the one Texter. They believe they're right, and that's all there is to it. And it's hard to see past it. I just don't buy it. The recent NFL Draft recent NFL Draft, there was an impactful trade made by one specific team. According to a national writer at The Sporting News, Mike Moratus said, the Lions went into the off season knowing they had the

sixth worst pass defense in the league a year ago. What did they do to fix it? Yes, Tirian Arnold was a big move in this. Rakestraw was a big move, but the first domino to fall what might have been arguably the biggest trade in the offseason, and that is Detroit getting Carlton Davis from Tampa. Cameron Sutton his legal issues gone, Lion's already bad with him. Now you've got Davis, Now you've got Arnold, now you've got Rekestraw, and now on paper anyway, you have a much much better secondary.

Here's what he writes. It was only two years ago that Davis commanded an extension from the Bucks. It's true that he failed to reach double digits and passes defended last season nine for the first time since twenty eighteen, and the Pro FOOTBALLCUS gave him the worst defensive grade of his career, but he

also missed significant time with an injury. He's only twenty seven. It would not be surprising if the self described lockdown corner helped terry On Arnold and Rakestraw Junior to boost a Lions defense that ranked twenty seventh in twenty twenty three. Another strong move viewed by just about every national writer of how good Brad Holmes is and his front office at what they do eight six six eight three eight forty eight forty three that's the Meyer hotline. We're back with more exes and

bros. Right after this in the Daan with Danzickerson, Hey, Tiger's fans in her baseball season means new season on Michigan's favorite island destination Mackinaw Island, Baseball Spring and Mackinaw Island things that return every year, reminding us what a great state we live in. Shake off the winter blas, take in a game, and plan your trip to America's top summer destination, mackinawe Island dot org. Forty game mark can be surprisingly telling when it comes to team offense

and team pitching. Where teams rank at the quarterbold is often about where they finish, and run differential helps us identify the surprise teams. The central divisions full of surprises and to me, the biggest of all of Kansas City, the world's head a twenty four and sixteen record, forty games in and most impressively, the third best run differential in the American League. Guardians and Twins are both top six and run differential, Tigers in the middle of the pack.

Best news for Tigers fans is how good the Tiger's pitching has been to get to where they want to be from here on out, It's all about the offense. We're teeing off our tenth year at the Meyer LPGA Classic for simply gives. Get ready for the best are yet to help neighbors in need

Get your tickets now admire LPGA Classics dot com. I gotta tell you, I'm sure over the weekend, if you had the opportunity to watch any Tigers baseball, one of the first things you noticed was the City Connect

uniforms. I'm a little surprised that baseball in general thinks fans overall are an agreement that the City Connect jerseys or uniforms are good. Ben when you saw them on the field of play, did you look at them with the Tigers and say, man, that screams Tigers baseball to me? I like those? Did you like them? I personally liked them. It didn't like you said. It doesn't scream Detroit Tigers. But I thought they looked good.

I thought they looked like softball uniforms. Okay. I didn't think there was one endearing quality about it, not one. Where's the tradition of Tigers baseball in their city? Connect uniforms? Did you find it because it looked like a sticker their helmet? I didn't find it at all. The reason I bring it up, too, is because Cleveland unveiled theirs a more softball uniform look. There's these people think they come out with these statements like Cleveland's.

Cleveland comes out and said, we wanted to take this as an opportunity to really show what makes Cleveland special sort of, not just from a visual standpoint, but also from a thematically. You're just throwing a bunch of words. It's it's a it's a verbage salad. Why don't you just be real and tell us this is a chance for people to buy different merchandise with a different look. That's what it is. It has nothing to do with the field

of play. It has nothing to do with tradition. Where is the tradition in the San Diego Padres city Connect unis the Houston Astros with Space City. If it's a nickname, that's one thing that has no connection to the Houston Astros. Just because it's Space City and you launch rockets and send missions there. They really think we're stupid when it comes to this stuff, and it's offensive. It's nuts. I know, we got a text Man fire away.

Yeah, this is back to the Dumars and Eisermann conversation. It says Dumars wouldn't find it a challenge more than Spielman plays. Joe One drafted one as a GM loved Bill Davidson, who, by the way, has been smeared and his prize jewel knocked down. Bill Bill Davidson has nothing to do with it. He's not the owner any longer. I don't know. I don't need a revisionist history over something that I covered for decades. I know Bill Davidson owned the team. I know Joe Dumars was the general manager and

the president of basketball operations. It's time to move on. It's funny that the same people who bitch and moan about retreads in coaching want retreads on the field and in the front office. It's amazing. Joe Dumars was not very good at his job near the end and when he left. Answer me this, If Joe Dumars was in such great demand, why doesn't anybody else tap into that? Why doesn't anybody else want that? It's ridiculous. Stop going

back to the same people time and time again. Think a little bit, open things up, open your mind a little bit, and say, you know what, let's get this next guy, like from a general manager standpoint, had you heard of Brad Holmes and what he did with the Rams? Honestly, you get a guy in there like that knows what he's doing, has a vision. You want to go backwards. I'd like to go forward. That's what I'd like to do. It's just it's I don't know.

I don't know why people feel the need to fall back into something comfortable for themselves. We don't want to be uncomfortable, do we? No, we don't. So what do we want to do? We want to go back to the person who we're familiar with because it's a name, it's a legend. Great, it was a legend. Can we can we just let's let's move on. He's not the guy you want to rebuild. You want to do it under a guy who was run out of here because he didn't have

it any longer and still doesn't. And that's okay, But you're falling back on it just because it's he's like a he's like an old comfortable blanket because he was a legend. Here go after somebody who's going to bring a a a different view for this franchise that has some type of track record with somebody else and can give us that. We just don't want to accept it. Why why can't we get there? We just don't know the names? We just don't do you know who John Horst is. He's the Bucks general manager.

Would you have liked it? Look at what he's done in building Milwaukee? How about that? Would you want something like that? Well, the Bucks blocked him. I get it. But would that be a good fit? Yes, look at what he's done recently with something. There are other names out there like that. It's a key time in this franchise's history. I love Chris Bielman. He's not making those decisions. He's in on it. He's not the president, he's not the GM. He's helping them make

the decision. That is different than a guy who's going to actually make the decision. The phone number on the Meyer hotline eight sixty six eight three eight forty eight forty three, and you can text US Sports radio to twenty one thousand. It's a good, heated debate. It's sometimes it's better off to look. I respect that the texts. Sometimes I'd rather have that as a phone call because that person is pretty passionate about their side of the argument.

That's okay, that's all good. I just I'm not into it. I don't think I'm going to convince you. Doesn't sound like anyway, and you're not going to convince me either. Speaking of convincing, there is still a player who national writers feel is disrespected, which kills me because they're the ones who have been disrespecting them all along. That we'll get to when we come

back. And the question it begs, the question about when we get convinced as a fan base on a player or a team, when does it happen? We're glad you're with us. I hope you can join us anyway you like, whenever you can. Opinions are always respected. I always appreciate

the conversation. Meyer Hotline eight sixty six eight three eight forty eight forty three. You can text the program Sports Radio to twenty one thousand. Ben. I know we got a text too, Yeah, fire away. We got one that says aj Hinch and Dan Campbell were retreads. Well, Dan Campbell wasn't a retread. Dan Campbell was an interim head coach at Miami. It wasn't a retread. I don't look at it. I don't look at that like anyway. So ajhah forced out, Yeah, forced out because of you

know, the violation. The cheating scandal would have still been managing, would have still been managing had it not been for that. So you want to call it a retread, that's fine. I'm not sure what that has to do with that. There are plenty of retreads, a ton of them, Andy and Andy Reid is a retread, and he's won three Super Bowls in Kansas City. I'm not sure where the text is going with that. Dan Campbell is an interim coach in Miami, taking over there with the Miami Dolphins

in two thousand. He took over for Joe Philbin. What year was that, twenty fifteen, I believe, and went five to seven. I don't view that as a retread. Maybe we have different views on that. So in Detroit, he's hired as the head coach. In Miami, he was not hired as the head coach there. He was given that once the head coach was fired. He was a tight ends coach with the Miami Dolphins for an extended period of time, and I believe was still the head of the

tight ends coach when he was named interim. He was the assistant head coach and tight ends coach in New Orleans. I don't think that makes him a retread. Ah Hinch sure won a World Series Houston. You'd have to consider a retread. So some of the greatest coaches of all time are retreads. Guys. You know, Bill Belichick's a retreat because he was a head coach before. Scottie Bowman retread Miami or I should say Montreal Saint Louis. Yeah,

I've got nothing against retreads, Absolutely nothing against them. I don't think every coach hired if they're fired, and they're bound to be. Some of the best coaches of all time have been fired. Guys have won championships and been fired, Like Babcock won a Stanley Cup, was fired. Dyne Casey was Coach of the Year, was fired. Joe Tory, viewed as one of the best baseball men of all time, was fired. Jim Leland was fired. These things happen. Do I think, Do I think they deserve

another chance at another job? You're damn right, depending on the situation. That has very little to do with what we were discussing. If those techs are about what we were talking about with Joe Dumars and John Hammond Meyer, hotlines open for you eight six six eight three, eight forty eight forty three. Let's go there, now, Ben, who we got, Yeah, we got Freddy on the line Freddie, good morning, hope you had your wife had a lovely Mother's day? What's going on? Yeah, it was.

She wasn't Ohio when I was at work. It was good Bobbi. Okay, Well so she's away from you, so she probably did have a very good one on the way around. Hey anyway, mar mar marv Levy. Marv Levy was a retread. So obviously the texter is me. I put my name out of text. I don't know why Ben doesn't say my name, but it's not a big deal. So you know, the point of I might have to stop setting texts because if it's not right correctly the whole context, it comes out differently on it. But I just don't have

the time to call anymore with these kids in the morning. But I try. But then the point of my the point of my text was, first of all, when you know, if I have an opinion, there's I don't care about win or now. It's not about winning or losing. It's just about expressing an opinion. The point of the text was Tom Gores wants to save his name in this town because it because with the pisss Apathya set in, I go back to the moment when Sheila Fordhamp put her hands in

her face Thanksgiving versus Houston, Texas. Apathy has set in Matt Patricia, Bob Quinn. It was at the lowest point of all points, and no one in this town. No one in this town thought the Lions would ever come back. No one did. And then they hired a coach before you hired a GM and no one thought that the Lions would come back. So the Pissons right now, no one thinks the Pistons are going to come back.

So what what what? Sheila did one of her best, the best moves she made, which I agree with you, no one talks about. She went to Chris Fielm and said listen, and maybe Chris went to her who knows, and said, listen, this is bad. Well, we got to do something here. I need your help. And Tom Gorge is Tom Gorge has hired three or four guys and nothing has worked. Nothing.

And I think about a guy that came here that that it was unpopular at the time that the owner took Joe Dumars over Isaiah Thomas because Isaiah Thomas was, you know, the jewel of the franchise. But Bill Davidson new to go with Joe Dumars. He turned the franchise around. So what is Tom dude? You asked you? You said about a guy? Do you know a guy named John Horst in Milwaukee? Of course I see that all the time. I read it all the time. Do we trust Tom Gors to

make another move? That's that's kind of really my whole point about this. When when Steve eismer came here, yes he was respected GM, but he he left a fantastic situation that he built to come here. Why did he come here? Because the Red Wings are his hard there, there is passion, he's a he's a king in this town. And I just thought maybe it's something to consider. Because we know Joe Dumars is winning. You know what Karen Davison did to him, there's a whole different ballgame. That's that's

kind of the whole point of the test. Doesn't make me right, doesn't make me wrong, But the odds are good again on my side, Tom Gore is going out there to pick another guy. It's not good chef. That's my That's really my problem with with Tom Gors. Yeah, I totally

get that, and I do appreciate it thanks to the phone call. I just think if you're looking at a guy who has done it recently and doing it right now, Sam Presty, for example, who's done it at OKAC, I think moving them from a general manager to a president or whatever it may be, that to me would be more impactful, more important, I think than bringing back Joe Dumars. And look, you're one hundred percent right,

I mean you don't. When a man has made as many poor decisions as Tom Gors has made for his coaches and or leaders of his organization, then I think a lot of people are going to question it moving forward. I'm just I mean, at some point, some point, we've got to let go. And I think comparing one guy Steve Eisaman, who had built Tampa, like you said, was coming home, but was doing that while still in the business, I think is different than your examples. Joe Dumars

is not a general manager. He is not a president of basketball ops. He's in the NBA front office handing out fines. I think he's done. Doesn't mean I didn't appreciate it. I just think he's done, and I think it's time to pick somebody else who that is Sean Marks. I don't

know, Okay, I'm not claiming to know. I've got some names, I've got some ideas that I've given you instead of falling back into a habit of going, let's have I'll guy come back and do it, let's reunite and have something special again, when it wasn't special at the end of his tenure. First of all, I think I do give you credit for staying positive. I do. I mean, you're you're trying to be as optimistic as possible. Joe Dumars is a guy who has, you know, kind

of owned his mistakes. Okay, there's too many times. That's why I brought up what I did. I brought up his successes, you know, the number of Eastern Conference finals in a row and so on and so forth. I think that's important to do that. I've said that before. This is a guy who but there are plenty of negatives when it comes to Joe Dumars too, that we are conveniently forgetting. There are plenty of big mistakes that caught up to him. One is obvious, Okay, Chauncey Billips Alan

Iverson, do I need to remind you of that? What about the fact that he lets Rick Carlisle go, where's the track record there? With all due respect, honestly, I mean, what's the Joe Dumar? I wish I could have kept him on long? What's the track record there? Is it? Michael Curry? Is it? Flip Saunders? Is it? John Lawyer? Tell me the decisions that he made in his tenure. And I've already given him credit for a lot of things, but in his tenure that makes you go, God, dang man. Got to have him back,

have to have him back. I'll tell you what it is. It's the emotion. It's the emotion that he is ours and that he wanted to be here. Oh boy, finally we've got somebody who who really wanted to be here. I want that feeling again. I want to feel wanted. No the darko, militant, just low hanging fruit man. That's easy. That's what everybody says. They still want a championship despite that. Okay, I'm not claiming that he was the right pick. I'm not claiming that Joe Dumar

should be given a free pass and all that other stuff. He's a Hall of Fame executive. But there were plenty of mistakes man late in his tenure, he made mistakes Ben Gordon, Charlie Villanueva trading for Allen iverson the carousel of coaches. Honestly, I mean he even admitted that his inability to transition out of the Richard Hamilton, Ben Wallace, Chauncey B Phillips era was bad. He treated Antonio mcdce for who check Sam? Right? Did you forget

that? It brings up a really interesting point. I mean, when do you close the window on your core group? When do you decide, Okay, that's it. I've got to move on Toronto mapleiefs are trying to deal with that right now. When do we move on from the combination of John Tavares and Austin Matthews and Mitch Marner and the talent that they have, okay, and they've got a lot of it. When do we break it up to find something different. Joe Dumars had to do the same thing. It

didn't work for him. It was not good. But you want to go back to it because he wore a Piston uniform. He won a championship too as a player and want a championship as an executive. In two thousand and four and it's twenty twenty four. But I'm gonna hold on not me. We can respectfully disagree, don't want it, no thanks, I'm going to move forward. The Meyer hotlines eight sixty six eight three, eight forty eight forty three Tech Sports Radio to twenty one thousand. At some point you got

to close the damn door. Look for somebody else. Let somebody else come here, take root and this be their place, like Brad Holmes, for example. You hope that will be the case for Scott Harris. Don't know. That's still wide open on that I had mentioned just prior to the break. We're not gonna be able to dive into this all that much. But

the disrespect that word is probably overused a lot. But there was a recent article on a website about ranking the quarterbacks in the NFL and brock Purty was up there among the top quarterbacks in the league, and apparently there was a lot of pushback on that. Forget the fact that his team reached the super Bowl. Forget the fact that his completion rate was outstanding and touchdown to interception rate was outstanding. Forget that he's twenty four cap friendly, very accurate playing

on one of the best teams in football. Mister irrelevant, last player taken in the draft. People can't get beyond it. It's a cool story, but wouldn't want him Why because he's mister irrelevant because everybody failed to It's okay to have Tom Brady, for example, go late in the draft. Joe Montana be a third round pick anyway. One of the storylines in training camp will be how much respect a guy like Brock Purty of the forty nine ers gets. Didn't really get a chance to get into that. Maybe we can

carry it over tomorrow. I want to thank Ben for producing our program this morning. Thanks to you for your text and your phone calls. It's always great stuff.
