Second hour of the program. Welcome back. Every week you see these Major League Baseball rankings, and I'm sure there are parts of you that go here, we go it. Usually it comes out on Tuesday, So we'll get to that tomorrow, no doubt. Maybe it comes out a little bit later on today. But and you know, again, these things are so damn subjective. But you and I both know if you and I sat down, we could pretty much guess who we consider to be the top five teams in
baseball, whether they're playing well or not. We get a pretty good idea this late in a season. It's not like you could do this in week three. You just don't know yet. But last week this is what caught my eye from the Athletic, where they ranked the Tigers twenty fifth. Again things have changed slightly, not much, but slightly, and they were predicting trade deadlines and they had for the Tigers trade deadline prediction one more big sale.
I didn't know whether to take this Trent as a negative or a positive, And let me read it to you, says it's a crying shame when a starter has a cy Young Award caliber season for a team with no realistic shot at the postseason. As with Trek School and the Tigers, they will be selling again this summer, and they and their fans hope this is the last one before the franchise becomes a contender once again. That's the thing that gave me slight hope this is the last time we have to go through this.
I would caution that writer, or anybody who believes in this writing that just because you trade something doesn't mean you're always getting something well in return. Tigers fans know that, we should We should know that by now all too well. They continue and say Jack Flaherty will surely be on the move as
a coveted rental starter. So they're not suggesting scooble, they're suggesting flarity, which you and I think makes a lot of sense, right, Okay, yes, Then they write veterans Mark Canna, Carson Kelly, Andrew Chaffin and Shelby Miller could go to Canna's on that one year deal, No big deal. Carson Kelly's got another year left at his contract. Chaffin and Miller on one year deals, or actually I think I think Chaffin's on a two year
deal. Anyway, it says the Tigers aren't likely to trade anyone under long term contracts. Well, no kidding, that's because they're crappy contracts. Javier Bias is essentially untradeable. The likeliest outcome is Detroit eating his contract at some point. I always kind of smirk. I suppose there are suckers out there, you know, somebody's taking somebody's bad contract. There's plenty of bad contracts in all of sports that have been acquired by other teams, you know what
I mean. I mean it's hard to fathom certain contracts that other teams would actually take on just to get another player right all time, bad contracts. You can look him up and you can find a ton of them. But I don't think anyone's taking Javier Bias. I just don't. I don't think anyone's taking Anthony Wrendon, for example. But think about it. I mean, somebody took John Carlos Stanton's contract. And I'm not saying he's a bad player. He's had a lot of injuries, that's for sure. But somebody
took his contract. The Yankees did. Miami gave it to him, and then somebody took it as in New York. Would you consider Trevor Story's contract six years, one hundred and forty million dollars for Boston, and he hasn't done anything. He's been health unhealthy, that's the problem. But ninety four games in twenty twenty two, surgery on a UCLA ucl rather in January of twenty twenty three, didn't make a return to August and then continues to be
a problem. There's Chris Bryant's got a bad contract. I think you get my point. Somebody's willing to take some bad contracts, so maybe, just maybe you could have to pay some of it. In other words, eat some of it, and somebody might take it. But I doubt it. I just don't see that happening. But my fascination with the article was more about Canna, Kelly, Chaffin, and Miller. It does show you that no team feels still strong enough about their bullpen until they cover just about every
possible scenario. So I could see Chaffin and Miller going somewhere for sure. Kelly's a pretty reliable defensive catcher. Doesn't give you much offensively, but he could help a team as a backup catcher. And I suppose Canna as a quote end quote professional hitter. We haven't seen that yet, per se. Not that I have anything against Mark Canna, because I really actually liked him
in Oakland. I thought he was pretty damn good. There really pay off for the Mets that much, and so far you would have to say that in Detroit and a guy who's batten two twenty five with very little power, it hasn't paid off for the Tigers either. I think the key is the first two you mentioned, because that being relievers, because I think that is one of those areas we see it every year. We saw it last year when the Tigers sold Lorenzen. It's that's what a team hoping to make a
push or maybe they're in a pennant race. You can always use another arm in the bullpen. Absolutely, and I agree one hundred percent with you. But let me ask you this. Do you remember what the Tigers got for Michael Lorenzen? I do not, not off the top of my head. And therein lies part of the issue. Sure, okay, and this is not by the way, that's not a knock on you, But nobody knows who how you Lee is because that's what they got. They got a young
I don't know how good he is. But they got a young infielder, versatile infielder, by the way, for Michael Lorenzo. How you Lee was correct? Me if I'm wrong here, Trent Philadelphia's number five prospect in their system YEP. Twenty years old. He enters the Tigers organization as the number six prospect last season when they acquired him. Okay, so is he the guy? Is he a guy I should say? Who you think this team will be able to build around? I don't know. It's to me that
it's a little bit too far to look ahead. I guess my point though, is this is what we'll use examples of past trades, guys who have moved on. We forget what we received in return. I'm not saying it. They shouldn't have created Michael Lorenzen, Absolutely they should have. I don't know what they could have gotten for him. We don't know the offers. And Lee is off to a it's no longer a start. He's playing well in Eerie. He's been a double A all year long, and he's hitting
almost three hundred. He's not going to be a guy who hits for power. He never has. What position is he playing well? He's playing some different positions. He's played some second sixty two games there, he's played some third and where is seven games there? Where have you noticed where it seems like a lot of Detroit's young prospects play second base. Yeah, and with Colt Keith kind of coming on strong here with a heater in early July,
which is a welcome sign, you know. I mean everyone's happy to see that, for sure. Yeah, but that's offensively right. When I think of Cole Keith, I think of exactly what you said earlier in the six o'clock hour draft and develop well, they drafted him, they're developing him. I've said this from the very beginning when people were, oh my god, you know he's not very good, I said, he's going to hit. Guys like that who have hit at every level, don't just stop. He's
good enough. The question is whether or not he's going to be good enough defensively. That's where I want to see the development. He was a high schooler man, so he's been pretty damn good. I never lost confidence in him in that regard. There was a pretty cool bobblehead giveaway over the weekend at one major League ballpark. What could the Tigers do? That's a equivalent. We'll talk about that when we come back on Acis and Bros. After

But yes, I'm somewhat well versed for a twenty four year old. Yeah. Good, they've got the reruns. I think it's Look, it's one of, if not all time, my favorite show, so much so that my sons and I and I raised them on Seinfeld. We have a you know, a thread that we go back and forth.
Well, we'll just text to that thread certain lines from Seinfeld. Well, didn't know about this until during that thread. One of my sons sent the fact that they were had a George Costanza Yankee giveaway Bobblehead night, and it's of George holding a bat because of the episode where he said to the Yankees, you know, he was the assistant to the assistant to the drawling secretary of the New York Yankees, and he tries to help Tartable with his
swing. Bernie Williams and Derek Jeter, Hey, we did win the World Series last year, and George has taken batting practice, says yeah, in six games and then he hits one over the fence. Right. The funny thing about that is that you know they and they had Larry David as George Steinbrenner and acting like a complete idiot. There are so many great scenes and
great lines about the Yankees through that entire season or seasons of Seinfeld. The funny thing about that is that Jerry Seinfeld is a massive Mets fan, so Keith Hernandez has an appearance in a couple of episodes, and Jerry's constantly seen wearing a New York Mets hat. But George Costanza is hired by the Yankees. The other funny thing about that is that I might be traveling with the team. Assistant to the traveling secretary usually doesn't travel with the team. But
well that's that's neither here nor there. They did on July fifth, they gave away George Costanza bobbleheads and it was a massive success, like huge, and Jason Alexander, who played George Costanza in the series, tweeted out, I'm so glad bobblehead George was a fan fave. No, I don't get anything for it except joy the thirty five years after putting on those glasses, people are still enjoying our work. The show was a gift from you to
us. Thanks for keeping it alive. Serenity Now. Serendity Now is another line in which he and his father, Frank Constanza used in a number of different episodes. Anyway, so if you don't follow it, it's tough to really get a true appreciation for it. But it really is cool. Jason Alexander, the actor, also has thrown out the first pitch at games in the past, the Chicago Cubs being one of them. So it got me thinking a little bit when my son sent me this. There's plenty of references,
plenty of references for the Detroit Tigers in Hollywood. What could you provide that is similar to that for the Tigers fans that they would appreciate? What could you do? Meyer? Hotline is open for you. It's eight six eight eight three, eight forty eight forty three. What comes to mind? Now? I don't want to steal everybody's you know, proverbial thunder, but there are times where you know, I I think of a couple of different things, and again this is this is based This is based on Hollywood.
Okay, so what are you going to what are you going to select? What Hollywood actor or actors would you believe associate with the Detroit Tigers. So I'll give you a first example here, Tom Selleck. Tom Selleck has taken batting practice with the Tigers back in the eighties. And he also he was
remember he was mister Baseball. There was a movie called Mister Baseball. Let's see thirty one years it's thirty two now, I believe, so thirty two years ago he was Magnum Pi. Yeah, I know they've got a remake now that is just horrible. But Jeff, we got Texter agrees with you. By the way, they texted magnum Pi. There you go, PI, there you go. Yeah. So what he did was he played a
role in Mister Baseball. Now, he played it as a Yankee. I believe he wasn't a Tiger, but he was born in Detroit and he is a guy who idolized out. He used to wear a Tiger's cap during Magnum Pi. I don't know if the new Magnum Pi does that or not. I mean, I haven't seen the show, but they're still doing the tiger's hat. They are doing it. Okay, thank you, that's good. That's really good. But he was out there in Lakeland a number of times.
He had taken batting practice back in nineteen or early nineteen nineties, nineteen ninety one or so, and he had Alan Trammel and Lou Whittaker in one of his episodes. So I thought that was pretty cool. So that comes to mind for me, and a Texter agrees with me. Kevin Costner comes to mind. Why Well, because when Kevin Costner played for the Love of the Game, he was wearing a Detroit Tiger's uniform. Now, I don't know if he's a Tigers fan, not like Tom Selleck, but he did
you know, he did wear the Tiger's uniform. What about now this is not the Tigers, but it's a Detroit team. What about Ferris Bueller's day off, the Gordy Howe jersey in Ferris Bueler's day off where they live in Chicago, yet they're wearing a Red Wings jersey. Cameron, they take his dad's Ferrari or Maserati out, whatever it is. I think it's a Ferrari unbelievable car. Right, He's wearing Gordy Howe jersey. That's a possibility at
a Red Wings game, not at a Tiger's game. Anyway. Those are just some of the things that I was thinking about when I saw this George Costanza bobblehead. When we come back, I want to dive into the greatest basketball team ever assembled. I'm not going to get into. If you've listened to the show long enough, you probably think, Oh, here comes Chip's rant on why Isaiah Thomas wasn't part of the dream Team. I could go there. I could do that annually if I wanted to. I'm not going
to. There is a ridiculous comparison taking place in sports today where apparently we have gotten caught up in a moment of wanting to shill for today's NBA players. I'll explain when we come back on x'es and bros. Across the Great State of Michigan after this. The text line Sports Radio to twenty one thousand. I think during our era, each individual's era, we have a tendency to believe it is the best. And that's okay because we've seen great players in every era in every
sport. It's okay that way back in the day, you thought Gordie Howe was the greatest hockey player of all time, and then generation after generation maybe it changes a little bit, and then you might feel like it's Geela Floor, maybe it's Mike Bossi, or maybe it's Wayne Gretzky, or maybe it's Mario Lemieux and now you think it's Connor McDavid whatever. Okay, same thing
in baseball way back in the day. It's DiMaggio, it's Maze, it's Mantle, it's Will and then it's Bred and it's Aylling and it's a Malodor, and it's Rose and it's Griffy Junior, and then it's it was Winfield before that, and George Brett, for example, and now it's about Otani and it's Trout and got all right, that's cool. You can make all kinds of arguments. I love that young people feel like the best player they've ever seen is maybe playing right now. And there are certain players I absolutely
love, right. I love watching Bryce Harper. I don't know how you can't stop whatever you're doing and watch show Hey Otani. But sometimes, I mean, if you're a national writer, if you somebody who has followed a specific sport for an extended period of time, you have to be careful with your words, what you write, in what you say. And when I read The Athletic the other day about Olympics and the coverage of the men's basketball
team, I was blown away by what was written. Somebody wrote, this is regarding the men's basketball team headed to France for the Olympics, this is arguably the most talented men's basketball team ever assembled. That's what he said about this year's team. I went, I had to read that again. I went, do you know who's on? Maybe you don't know. Let me read you who is on the men's basketball team? Okay, and you tell
me if you think this is the greatest ever assembled. It's It's not a knock on these players because they're all NBA players, But don't give me that they're all Hall of famers. Steve Kerr thinks they are, but we don't know that yet. We don't know Bam out of Bio. I think he's a really good player. I'd love to have him on my team. I don't know if he's a Hall of Famer. You think Devin Booker is a Hall of Famer? Steph Curry is, Anthony Davis, probably is, Kevin
durant is. We don't know about Anthony Edwards. As much as I love watching him play and I absolutely love his athleticism. Joel Embiid is he a Hall of Famer? Tyres Halliburton, Drew Holliday, Lebron James, Absolutely Kawhi, Leonard, Jason Tatum. That's your twenty twenty four USA men's national team out of bio Booker Curry, Davis Durant, Edwards, Halliburton, Holliday, James, Leonard Tatum, Embiide Again really impressive. I'd take any of them,
but the greatest ever assembled. Does this writer need to be reminded of the original Dream Team, the nineteen ninety two original Dream Team. Do you
remember who was on that team? David Robinson Hall of Famer, Patrick Ewing Hall of Famer, Larry Bird Hall of Famer, Scottie Pippen Hall of Famer, Overrated Michael Jordan Hall of Famer, Clyde Drexler Hall of Famer, Karl Malone Hall of Famer, John Stockton Hall of Famer, Chris Mullen Hall of Famer, Charles Barkley Hall of Famer, Magic Johnson Hall of Famer, and
Christian Latner who was a college player at the time. All that team did was go out in the Tournament of Americas and beat Cuba by twenty two, or beat him by seventy nine, rather beat Canada by forty four, beat Panama by sixty, Argentina by forty one, Puerto Rico by thirty eight, in Venezuela by forty seven. Then they went to the Olympics and they beat
the snot out of every single team they played. Angola embarrassing right, simply embarrassing, beat him by sixty eight points, Croatia beat him by thirty three, pounded Germany even sixty eight, did the same to Brazil, Spain, Puerto Rico, Lithuania, and in the gold medal game against Croatia beat them
by thirty two. Left no doubt whatsoever. Steve Kerr, who's the head coach of this year's I don't know if you want to call it a dream team, but it's the Olympic team, says there are twelve future Hall of Famer. What I don't understand that. I think the reason for hysteria here. And I'm not defending this, chef, because I completely agree with you. I mean, ninety two you just read off the roster. It's eleven
for twelve in the Hall. Yeah, I think the reason for hysteria here is because for a couple of years we got away from the best players playing in it. And I mean, obviously there's still some really solid players playing in it. But you look at the twenty twelve team, the twenty sixteen team, the twenty twenty eventually twenty twenty one team, and it's like, this is the first time that we're going to get to see KD, Steph, Lebron Kawhi, all those guys play together, not just one or two.
So for people of my generation who have grown up and those are our guys, I mean, we're finally going to get to see all those guys on the court at the same time. And it's not the All Star Game
where no one's playing for real, No, and I understand it. I'm not saying it's not a great team, it's right, but to say it's the best team i'vever assembled, that hyperbole just because you have eleven current All Stars and by the way, that's that's eleven of the twelve, so not that everybody even even as an All Star there and two current NBA champions Tatum and Drew Holliday, and obviously Lebron James has won a championship, and others.
I just I think it's borderline irresponsible for someone to actually suggest it might be the greatest team ever assembled when we just there's so much left to be decided. The guys who played again. I don't want to sound like the old guy in this conversation, but when you have that team of nineteen niney you knew they were Hall of famers. There was no doubt that Jordan and Johnson and Bird and Ewing, that all those guys were Hall of famers.
I want you to tell me, outside of Curry, Durant, James and Davis, who is guaranteed to be a Hall of Famer from this team. I think Kawhi Leonard will certainly make it without a doubt. Two time champion, won a few Defensive Player the Year awards, been a perennial All Star now for a decade. He'll make it. Okay, So there's five anybody else that I'm missing? Did you say, Steph? I did? Okay?
I think. Well, here's the thing. I think a lot of this and what Steve Kerr is getting at, even if he didn't articulate it very well, he's projecting clearly right, because I mean, Anthony Edwards just had his best season of his career and there's a lot of excitement surrounding him, and he's just fun to watch and stuff. But Jason Tatum just won his first championship. He might win more. You know, A lot of this I think is projection, which doesn't make it right, but I think
that's the key here. With a lot of those guys in ninety two, to your point, Chef, you weren't projecting anything. Larry Bird was at the tail end of his career, Magic had already solidified himself. Michael and Scotty even at that point, were two time champions. I totally understand it. I get it. I mean it just we need to keep in mind here. I mean, you know how I feel about Anthony Edwards. We've talked about he's a dynamic, energetic, high level superstar type player and I
mean that. And he's a brother fresh air for a lot of people. You know. Sure, but he's only been in the league four years. He's a two time All Star, right, So you're telling me Steve Kerr, who's two eyes and experience, should be well respected because of what he's experienced and what he's witnessed both as a player and a coach. Absolutely, you're telling me you already think he's a Hall of Famer. I like Jason Tatum, I really do. I think he's a really good basketball player.
And I said all year long, I think he's underrated right six in the MVP this year, fourth, a year ago, the year before, hasn't won an MVP. I mean, really, you you want it. You think he's a Hall of Famer already. This is what's happened I think in sports in general, not just basketball, not just with this team, and not with any one particular athlete. Okay, what's happened is we've taken the Hall of Fames in sports and no longer kept them for the greatest of great
players, but we've made them the Hall of Fames of very goods. And I think a perfect example of that is I love this guy. I love this player, Johncey Billups. Five time All Star, one time champion. Is he a Hall of Famer? Maybe that's where you really have That's a big piece of this puzzle, chepis who they're letting in nowadays, specifically in basketball. I still think football and baseball holds some water changes. It absolutely changes almost the criteria as we go. Let me just say this, and
during the postseason, I was a big fan of this guy. If Jalen Duran turned out to be Bam out of Bio, I'm all for it. Let me just say this, if Steve krusayin you've got twelve All Stars or twelve Hall of Famers, Bam out of Bayo is a three time All Star and his career average is fifteen points and under nine rebounds a game. Now, he's been on the All Defensive Team five times. That's great, but he hasn't won anything. I mean, come on, he's a really good
player, and again, I'd take him on my team. You're trying to tell me you think this dude is a Hall of Famer right now, you think this dude as part of a twelve man unit would be considered a team that is among the greatest ever or better than the nineteen ninety two. To tell me who's tell me whose place he takes. That's all I'm asking. Stop with the rhetoric. It's okay to just write or say, this is
a really talented team made up of all these All stars. They're going to represent the United States with honor, and they're going to do it in dominating fashion. You don't have to go so far as to say that it is arguably the greatest team ever assembled, because then you're just I think you're making an idiot out of yourself. You're getting caught up in a moment. So try to contextualize this. So just a tiny bit the perspective first and foremost,
you have to have a perspective. Yeah, I don't know how old Joe Varden is who wrote this article. You've got to have some type of perspective before you actually punch that in and press save and send to your editor. It's ridiculous. It is simply ridiculous. I'm not saying there's nobody on this team that wouldn't have made the nineteen ninety two team. That's not what I'm suggesting. Lebron James would make any team out there. But outside of
Lebron James, there's not one player on mas Steph Curry. Steph Curry, tell me who you're taking off. Stop with the rhetoric of this is the greatest team ever assembled. Have some understanding of history for just a moment. We get so caught up in these moments where it's, Oh, I am witnessing the greatest of all time. So I can just tell everybody when I'm older that I witness the greatest of all time. When you haven't, what
were you going to say? Well, I just think a more fair discussion might be, this is probably the best team since that ninety two team. Is that fails it? I mean, that would be a discussion. Is my point? Them being the greatest team ever as settled is not in the discussion. It's not even to your point, not one iota, but best team in the last thirty years. I think that's more fair to at least
talk about, rather than an insult to the Dream Team. Essentially. Yeah, and I know it wasn't meant to be an insult to the Dream Team, and I don't think they would take it that way, nor should they take it that way. I think it's more of somebody getting caught up in a current nostalgia who might be covering them and feeling like, yes, indeed,
this is as good as it gets. Steve Krue, the head coach, might Chuck Daily, the head coach back in nineteen ninety two, just and maybe perhaps it was a pretty good staff by the way, PJ. Carlissimo, Mike Krzyzewski, Lenny Wilkins. So you have Chuck Daily Hall of Famer, Wilkins Hall of Famer, Skryzhevski Hall of Famer. There's only two people associated with that entire team that are not Hall of Famers. At least.
I don't believe PJ. Carlissimo is Hall of Famer. I don't know why he would be, okay, because although it's not NBA, it's not an NBA Hall of Fame, as you know, it's a Pro Basketball Hall of Fame. And he accomplished a great deal as a collegiate coach, and he was pretty good in Portland, right. But to your point, too, Chef, I mean, even Christian Lahner, who's not a Hall of Famer. He's one of the most iconic college athletes ever. And that's what
he was at the time he was in college for Duke exactly. I would argue. I would argue Christian Latner four years, four finals, two championships, I would argue, he's the best college basketball player I've seen. Now from a pro standpoint, he was good, wasn't great, made an All Star team, made the All Rookie team, and played a long time, thirteen year career. That's pretty solid. Anyone would take that. That's really solid. Yeah, really solid guy who you know. He averaged fourteen points
and about seven rebounds per game. Good player, not great, good player, all right, I had to talk about that. We're gonna when we come back, we'll dive into some football. Pretty encouraging article out there for the Lions. It's a big picture NFL article, but it's pretty encouraging about the line. We'll discuss when we come back on Exes and Bros. Right
