Where are we at in society today? Come after me. I'm a man, I'm forty. Go ahead, make my day every single week. I put my freaking heart and soul into this. I don't go out there and laugh. It's not funny. Nothing's funny to me. I don't want to go out there and get embarrassed on Monday night football For everybody, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship. So I ain't nothing changed from yesterday. Still the same person I was yesterday, and I got the same
thing for you that I had yesterday. You know why I'm here. You play to win the game. You don't play to just play it. That's a great thing about sports. You play to win. I don't care if you don't have any wins. Do you go play to win? When you start telling me it doesn't matter, favorite time, get out for the matter. Hey, hope you had a good fourth of July. Hope you and your family had a chance to spend some time together. Wherever it was. You may have been. As long as a safe one and as long as
everyone was together. That's a good deal, at least in my book. Anyway. Welcome to another week of exes. And Bros. Welcome on a Monday across the great state of Michigan. My name is Matt Shepherd and Trent Beally is our producer. Today, Meyer Hotline is open for you eight six six eight three eight forty eight forty three. As well. You know, you got to give credit where credit is due. So many times, especially over the last month, when it has been a challenge to talk Tigers baseball, we have spoken honestly about it. We have been unimpressed with what they've been able to do or what they were headed toward. Well, give them credit for finishing off a weekend series sweep of the Reds in Cincinnati. And I said before this series, I said, look, Cincinnati's coming off a series sweep of the Yankees. I know the
Yankees have been struggling, but let's see how Detroit responds. And you know what they did. Derek Scougel strikes out of career best thirteen in seven score of sinnings, scatters three hits, gives up a walk, that's it. First three games sweep since late May against Kansas City, first three game winning streak since early June. Zach McKinstry two for four of the homer three RBIs Cole Keith had a couple of hips. Gee Vershella collected three hits Detroit in
every game in the series. Now, I am not going to try and tell you that home runs are the difference, but they're really important. I have said this since the beginning of the baseball season. I have said, you've got to have guys in the middle of the lineup with some thump. Do you know what Detroit's record is when they homer. They are thirty four and eighteen. That's an important statistic. Now, you can break down numbers
in baseball in a lot of different directions. I understand that, but homering having that threat, the ability to do that on a regular basis, yes, any guy can get into one. I get it. Okay, these guys are ultimateor league level with the ability to homer. Right, It's not Ozzie Smith in the lineup in one through nine. I'm just telling you that has been an important statistic for Detroit over the last few years. Now,
at forty two up, forty eight down. What kind of tone are they going to set for a four game series against Cleveland starting tonight at home? Cleveland is whether you believe it or not yet, I don't know what it takes to convince us, and I'll throw myself in there. There's still a wandering eye for me. And when I look at scores and when I look at standings, am I truly believing what I'm seeing? Cleveland is fifty six and thirty two on the year, We have twenty six roadkills so far.
Impressive. The fifty six wins second most in the American League. Only Baltimore has more, and only Baltimore in Philadelphia have more wins overall. You think the Dodgers are solid, so do I. They've got fifty five wins. You like what Milwaukee's been doing, so do I. They've got fifty three wins. Eric has hit a home run yesterday for them, So that's that's your deal right there. There's your breakdown of the American League and the Major
leagues overall. So second most in the American League, tied for second most in the Majors. On top of that, good news, more good news. Trek Schoubel and Riley Green are All Stars. I'm not suggesting that that one moment makes a massive difference in the opinion of Tigers fans, but there are many Tigers fans out there who have either texted this show sports Radio to twenty one thousand, called this show on the Meyer Hotline, or tweeted at
us and said, forget Riley Green. You've been disappointed with Riley Green. And that's pretty interesting since now he becomes the first All Star outfielder for the Tigers since Justin Upton in twenty seventeen, first time that the Tigers have put two in the All Star Game since that same year Fulmer and Upton, although Cabrera, Well, Cabrera and Gregorysoto went in twenty twenty two together, but Cabrera was sent from the commissioner for his career achievement. Remember it was him
and it was pool Holes. Cabrera from the American League, pool Holes from the National League. But I'm pretty happy for Riley Green and I'm happy for the Tigers. Now. It just doesn't it doesn't solve all the issues. It doesn't even come close to solving the issues. But I love the fact that the Tigers have a twenty three year old hoping we hope is a rising star. I'm not going to go so far as to say it's a superstar. That's the free press route is a rising superstar. No, no,
okay, Otani's a superstar, Harper's a superstar, Freeman's a superstar. Riley Green is not a rising superstar. He's a rising star, all right. There is a difference. But I think when you're looking at the ninety fourth Annual Midsummer Classic and you've got two Tigers, especially from a team that is that far below five hundred, a team that is fifteen game back in the division, a team that is looking up in the wild card right now, if you looked at it seven and a half games out, to have two
guys and two young guys, two establishing young stars. Pretty happy about it, and the organization should be proud. You and I can debate all we want on whether or not Riley Green deserves to be there. We know Schooble does. There's no doubt about that. Green hitting what to sixty seventeen bombs, twelve and a half percent walk rate, and by the way, a plus seven defensive runs saved in left field. I don't know what he is in centerfield, but in left field, would you take that? You should
take it. It's good stuff. It really is happy for him. Davis Thompson cards a seven hundred sixty four Sunday. He finishes with a record setting twenty eight underscar score to win the John Deer Classic, first PGA Tour win for him. He becomes a twenty fourth first time winner there. So the Georgia Bulldog arres an automatic invite to the British Open. Do you call it the British Open or do you call it the Open? Or is it either? I call it the British Open. Well neither works, though I know
what you're talking about. If you just say the Open, of course, yeah that's what it seems like. That is now the way to refer to it. But the other way, like you and I do, British Open is acceptable, all right? Stay with for just getting started here on a and Monday morning. There is a big retirement from sports that took place over the weekend. I wonder where it ranks or where it registers, if at all, on your sports schedule. We'll get to that when we return on

Trent, do you watch wrestling or have you ever watched wrestling? Never been my cup of tea nor mine. Maybe that's why we get along, but we do know this John Cena, You know whoever you know? John Cena is of course okay, he's retiring next year, twenty twenty five, will be his last. Now he's got an acting career to fall back on. He does an awful lot of endorsements, I believe. But this is a guy who, for what it's worth, is a sixteen time WWE champion.
He announced over the weekend at a World Wrestling Entertainment venue in Toronto that next year will be his last. I don't know the history of John Sana. I don't really know the history of the WWE. There are some people I know, even in sports, in our business, who follow it religiously. They draw a ton of people. How I don't know. My question is what is the draw? What is it that is so appealing about professional wrestling? Because I've tried to figure this out for decades and I get that.
You know, there's different things that make the world go round. I don't expect everyone to love hockey. I don't expect everyone to gravitate toward football, embrace baseball, or jump up and down with basketball enjoyment. I just wonder what it is about wrestling. There are certain sports for me anyway. There are certain sports where I've started to appreciate a little bit more, tennis being one of them. There are certain sports I never played but absolutely love.
Lacrosse is one of them, and I would encourage anyone to give it a chance watch it. I've said it about lacrosse for a long time. It has everything you could possibly want for American sports fans. We love speed, it's got it. We love physicality it's there. We love scoring. There's plenty of it, much more than you find in soccer. So I've always found it rather interesting that more people don't embrace the sport of lacrosse.
But whatever, you know, no judgment tennis. When I watch a lot of the women's and men's tennis events, I'm like, wow, I mean they're athleticism, how they're conditioning blows me away. You know, you're looking at guys. You got to win. At least in the majors, you got to win the best three out of five. You got guys lasting.
I mean, it's four hour matches. And I get that. You've seen you know, football and baseball and well not basketball in the old days, overtime hockey games going three hours, but you're getting rests every once in a while. Tennis very little rest, changeovers. But you've got to be in great shape to be able to play that sport. So I've grown to appreciate that. I've always enjoyed golf of two. So basically, you know,
we're looking at the major sports and so on and so forth. The wrestling one, I'm not talking about the Dan Gable IOWA led team to national championships wrestling. I'm talking about in the ring with chairs being broken over, people's backs being thrown through, the stuff like that. Those are the things that I scratch my head at a little bit. Boxing unbelievable. UFC, not
that I follow UFC. There are a lot of different sports that command our time, our attention, and when I say time, I mean you know you and I following it. So time, attention and entertainment dollar right. People have to make up their mind when I go to Toronto, Am I going to go watch this WWE event? When they come to Ford Field? Am I going to go and watch? I don't know how much tickets are. I'm trying to figure out what the attraction is. Knowing that I'm not
gonna call it fake. That's that we used to do that. We used to offend them and say this was all fake. It really doesn't happen. This guy's not punching the other guy. We know that it's scripted for the most part, right, But I got to thinking one day when Tim Donahey got in trouble with the NBA and gambling, how do we know other sports? I mean, we did find that out right, How do we know others aren't scripted quite as much we think. I look at WWE like this.
I look at it as if it's a reality TV show like we think or people think that something happens in a reality TV show. Oh, they're just they're picking up they're living their everyday lives and they're filming it. No, it's scripted. They've got writers and they're making sure certain things are done. They've got producers that are prying at the stars, the so called stars and everything, and their whole goal, CHEP, is to keep people's eyeballs
glued to the TV. And that's what WWE leans heavily on to its credit storylines exactly right, the characters, you know, yeah, the rivalries between these characters. Are you an Undertaker guy? Are you a John Cena guy? Right? So you got the good guys, you get the bad guys, right, people, and people are flocking to these stadiums, these arenas, and they're buying shirts, and they're buying all kinds of memorabilia. Right,
they're kind of hats, you name it. And then certain moves have been made famous in other sports, the John Cena where he takes his hand and he wipes it in front of his face a couple of times. All that kind of stuff. I've never I've tried to figure out the appeal to it. But yet, on the other hand, how is it much different than watching a television show that you can't get behind? You know what I mean? There are times where Trent, You've gone to a movie and you're
like, that movie sucked. Oh yeah, right, and somebody else has said, I love that movie. It's one of my favorite movies. I say that to my kids all the time. There are certain movies my wife and I have walked out of and my kids are like, are you kidding? How in the world did you walk out of that movie? Couldn't do it, couldn't finish, couldn't finish the office right that that movie, couldn't
finish Fargo, and people like, are you are you kidding? To each his own, I suppose, but yeah, I mean, that's that's how it worked for me. That's what I look at with WWE. How in the world do you go? Do you spend that much money? And do you finish watching it? It's a reality TV show and they've lost one of their stars starting in twenty twenty five. Speaking of stars, there's no doubt that Derek Schoubel is a Tiger star. Anytime he pitches, especially when he
pitches, well, you know what comes up? You know what the discussion is on social media. We'll talk of that when we return after this On Xies and Bros. How good terrek'schooble has been this year?
Right, The twenty seven year old is ten and three with a two point three seventy RA and a whip which is walks hits per innings pitched of under one really impressive one hundred and thirty two strikeouts. I mean, this is this is dominating stuff right now, what we're witnessing. I'm not saying it's the best I've ever seen. It's not the best in a Tiger's uniform, but it gives you a reason to watch. In a season in which the
Tigers have struggled mightily and not been playing to standard. Your standard nor mine, he has given you a reason to watch. And I think something that's also slightly underrated when it comes to Tarrek Scuble is durability. I don't think we've we've heard enough of that. I mean, he's taken the ball every single day, and there's something to be said for that too, right,
I mean you and I believe that availability is a really important. Part of availability is just really important for any team to go out there and be able to compete. It's you got to have your key guys available. And Trek Skouoble knock on Wood has been out there. So he leads all of baseball slightly above Chris Sale. Not enough has been talked about it with the year
Chris Sales having. But and he's healthy. You know, when you're healthy and available, look at how much more valuable you are to your team. So he leads all of starting pitchers in whip. He's among them best in strikeouts, it's top five there. Think of the ratio for a minute. Trek Schouble has one hundred and thirty two strikeouts. You know how many walks
he's got, Trent, guess how many walks he's allowed. It's gonna be something earth shattering for one hundred and ten inn So one hundred and ten innings, okay, twenty walks, unbelievable, that's amazing to me. We get caught up in strikeouts and I just gave him to you, and we get caught up in e a and whip and things of that nature, and it's all fair. But he has allowed just twenty walks in one hundred ten innings. And I mentioned durability, availability, all that other stuff. Right,
There are others who've thrown more innings. But remember he gets yangs pretty quick. Like Seth Lugo is a Hall An All Star for Kansas City. First time. He's got one hundred and twenty two innings. That leads all of baseball. Schoobl's gone that far behind. So anytime we watch or we see him about to start, it's it's worth our attention. It's absolutely worth the price of admission and a willingness to stop what you're doing and watch him pitch.
Already ten wins, by the way or a career high for him. The two point three seventy ra a career high for him. He's got eighteen starts now, he had more than twenty twenty one, but last year he only had fifteen, So he's got more than all his starts a year ago. He's going on this pace his career high in innings pitch. He's never thrown more than one hundred and forty nine. I'll give him one hundred and fifty's one hundred and forty nine and a third never thrown more than one hundred
and fifty innings. He's going to pass that. He's going to set career highs in every single category. And here's what comes up, because not many people believe the Tigers are going anywhere, here's what comes up. The trading. It is constant, seemingly after every start Trek Schooble makes, and usually it ends in a really impressive outing, one that makes you and I thankful that he's in a Tigers uniform, one that you and I probably collectively go,
how in the world did that dude last nine rounds? How is he taken in the ninth round in the twenty eighteen Major League Baseball Draft? That point, shep. I don't know if other followers of the Tigers, such as myself, have thought of it this way, but I've always kind of had Casey Mize, Trek Scouoble, and Matt Manning in the same I mean,
that's when they kind of came up together. Those are the three guys you were looking at, and for him to be especially durable when you stack him up next to those two guys, Yeah, added, what the success he's had and he was the lowest drafted of all three guys, right correct, yep, Mis was one one. Manning was first round I think ninth
overall. Schooble ninth round out of Seattle University. Originally he was an Arizona draft pick twenty ninth round in twenty seventeen, but stayed in school and rightfully so, it's just amazing to me. It's a great story about being undersold and over delivering and he'll be he'll have more money, they'll know what to do with couple of years. And rightfully so, if he keeps this up at the going rate, this is you know, look at what people are
making, at what he does. He has a dominating performance waiting to happen. But this is what happens every single time this guy goes out there on the bump. The immediate thought is if this team's not going to win, if this team's not going to compete for a postseason birth because you've been burned by things and these types of circumstances in the past. Michael Fulmer, justin Verlander, people feel the need to get the rebuild to the next level.
They want to strike when the iron's hot, right, right, How do you do that? You do that with valuable pieces, getting multiple valuable pieces back. I'm not saying you should trade him. I'm just telling you that's how it's usually done. So immediately people start talking about how they are in awe of what Trek Schooble has done again and give us their two cents whether
we want it or not, about trading Trek's scouble. Somebody recently, during this whole conversation, said, if you can get best pitching prospect, good defensive catcher, and somebody else who's going to contribute to this team, why wouldn't you do it? In so many words, Okay, if you can get some high prospects for this guy, why wouldn't you do it? So my immediate thought is this, when Justin Verlander was traded to the Houston Astros.
You remember it, I'm sure as well as I do. Back in twenty seventeen, was that's the trade deadline, and you felt like if you were going to get rid of him, he had another year left on his deal. If you were going to get rid of him, you had to get something back in return, I mean high or high prospects. Detroit goes with Houston as a trade partner. Do you know what you won't? We all know what they got right, Franklin Perez, Daz Cameron, and Jake
Rogers. Do you know where they ranked on Houston's prospect list? Do we remember that it was only eight years ago, but we have a tendency to forget. Franklin Perez was their number three prospect, Daz Cameron was their number nine, and Jake Rogers was their number eleven. You got three of Houston's top eleven prospects three, nine, and eleven at the time. This is what was written about Franklin Perez. Okay, Franklin Perez was nineteen years old
when the Tigers acquired him for Justin Verlander. Cbssports or MLB dot Com actually wrote, Perez is one of the fastest rising pitching prospects in all of baseball. He has a three zero eight ERA with seventy eight strikeouts and eighty six innings split between Single A and Double A. Just a teenager, he is already demonstrated a feel for four offerings. His most consistent pitch right now is a fastball, which is clocked between ninety two and ninety four and peaks at
ninety six. He could add velocity once he physically matures his downer curveball projects as a future plus pitch fading changeup shows similar upside, and his slider is developing nicely. He has the upside of a number three starter and is on pace to reach Houston before he turns twenty two, so they figured he was
going to be a major leaguer within three years. Now, Daz Cameron, they liked two because he was hitting two seventy one with fourteen bombs and thirty two stolen bases at Single A. What they said about Rogers, a defensive catcher hitting two sixty three at two different single A levels, make no mistake the Tigers. This is their words. Now, the Tigers added three high
end prospects in this trade. Their words. This is why you don't trade for prospects, or if you do, you have to mix in established major leaguers. But you also have to have good player development, and the Tigers as an organization don't have a great track record there. So I'm with you that the idea of trading for prospects isn't as sexy because you don't there's no guarantee that your development system is going to be able to take them anywhere.
Agreed. The only thing I would say to that, and it's not it's not that I disagree with you, because I do agree with you, Franklin Perez. I mean, who projects the injuries? Right? That's that's a tough thing to try and predict. Listen to this. Daz Cameron left Detroit in two thousand and twenty two, Right, the Tigers had had enough. Okay, we gave it a shot. How much of a shot was it? Seventy three games? But the minor leagues weren't. You know, his
performance at the minor league level wasn't wowing you there either. So what does he do Baltimore and now Oakland? So if it's do let's put it this way. Do you believe Baltimore has a pretty good track record of player development better than Detroit? Well, I mean look at their young players. Yeah, I mean I think that's an Excuse me, that's a definitive. Yes.
I don't know how you can say, at least right now, maybe not not ten years ago, but at least right now, you would say Baltimore's player development is pretty damn good, no doubt, especially because they're a smaller market. So I mean they're forced to have to develop players. Yeah, yeah, absolutely, like Adlei Rushman drafted and developed, Gunner Henderson drafted and developed, Jorge Matteo developed, Mountcastle, Westburg, Kawser, Hayes,
Juristad Mullins, Santander, all these guys drafted and or developed. That's a long list. So I think my point's a fair one. They are known, at least over the last few years, as an organization that drafts and developed, or when they get a certain player, develops them. So Daz Cameron leaves Detroit, goes to Baltimore, he plays one hundred and ten games and their Triple A affiliate in Norfolk. He has a decent season sixteen bombs hit, two sixty eight. Okay, there's nothing wrong with that, right.
I mean, for a guy at a Triple A level with twenty three stolen twenty three stolen bags, would you take that? Absolutely you would. They didn't find it enough in him to feel like he was worth holding on to. Doesn't that tell you something? They are They're they're noticing something, so they're decisions. I'm gonna trust a lot of their decisions. Overall, I think it's been pretty good. I mean, they found a guy in Jorge Mateo, who was from San Diego. They didn't draft him, but
they developed them because in San Diego he wasn't doing a whole lot. He is in barely two hundred. He goes to Baltimore, he takes off to eighty twenty twenty two, leads the league in stolen bases, becomes more reliable defensively. Their track record is worth boasting. So Daz Cameron, you would
think an organization that recognizes guys from other organizations that struggle. Mateo is a good example, all right, Or an organization that recognizes young players they viewed to be worthy of either of drafting or bringing in on a minor league dealer or whatever, and then developing them a little bit. Numerous examples of that. You've got all that right there in front of it. For Baltimore, well, they didn't feel like it. For Daz Cameron, so Perez,
you get some issues with his injuries, tough to project. Daz Cameron, who is the number nine prospect coming out of the Houston organization, not good enough. And then you've got Jake Rogers, the lone man standing from the Verlander trade. What are your thoughts? Your thoughts are what on a regular basis from a guy like Jake Rogers? Nice enough, dude, Okay, this is not about being nice. This is about being productive. This is
about being a steady, every day major leaguer. That's what I'm asking you. And there's not a lot of dual threat catchers in baseball. I understand that it's tough to come by. I would love the next Will Smith, absolutely love it. You don't have it. He's Jake Rodgers, isn't it. There aren't many of them out there. William Contreras, Alee Rushman, Salvador Perez, who is thirty four, but many people think he's a lot older than that. Logan Ohapi's a pretty good, pretty damn good player.
Jonah Heim, where are they? Jake Rodgers isn't registering there. He's not even close to those guys. Okay, you know it, and I know it. That's what you got for. That's why the prospects is a really difficult thing for me anyway to swallow. You're getting sold by a general manager telling you we got the best prospect. You know what I want? I want major leaguers. I want guys who can I can insert into my lineup
and who can play. When I have something as valuable as a guy like schoobl Or back then as a Verlander, I think it's worthy of getting something for him that is already proven. What's the old saying You've got to give up something to get something? Will you make that other team give up something because you're giving them a hell of a lot.
